Re: Dents and Scratches

Thunder, not wanting to even look at this gosh darn blacksmith
anymore, simply stood up and trotted over to one of the forge's
lit furnaces, plopping down in front of it and crossing his
hooves over his chest in a pout.
"Don't keep towels around, huh?" Mana said, deciding he'd just
let Thunder roast for a while, "what if you need to clean
something for a customer? Like, say, for example, a set of boots
that are lent to you for the sake of having gems swapped out."
"Stop worrying about your shoes, Mana," Thunder would not be
forgotten, him only pretending that Ironfire wasn't around
anymore and that this was an oddly toasty cabin full of pointy
things, "maybe some soot and dirt will do you some good. You
keep blinding children when you walk around in the daylight
after that suit of yours is freshly shined, like, everyday"
"Keeping your armour shiny," the unicorn replied sternly, "is
half. Of. The. Job. Speaking of which, would you mind if I added
a fresh polishing of my boots to your list of work, Ironfire?"

"I have a few rags lying around for polishing armour and tools,"
Ironfire explained, "they're certainly not big enough to dry off
a stallion," he paused for a moment as the two exchanged words,
"and sure, I'll polish them for you too. Likely would have done
anyway,"

"Ah, well, makes sense I suppose. Guess I've just gotten used to
the castle smiths level of maintenance quality. They mean well,
but they only concern themselves with making sure the arms and
armor are serviceable. Not a second spent actually worrying
about how shiny they are unless its something for the honor
guards."
Thunder, making kissing noises in response to the conversation
between the two ponies out of a desire to just be obnoxious,
stood up for a moment to try and dry himself off faster, and
hopefully get something of Ironfire's wet, by shaking his body
like a dog. Unfortunately for the guard, he was already dry
enough to prevent such splashing, him instead doing little more
than make his own still slightly dizzy head worse.
"Are you two done yet?" Thunder asked, using a hoof to steady
himself as he leant against a workbench, his level level of dry
having been reached and his belly speaking up again, "I didn't
stop being hungry... and now I want pizza."
"Were not getting pizza." Mana shot that idea down quickly, him
and the other guard then giving harsh glares at each other as
though they were about to battle to the death. Clearly having
the advantage of not having bashed his head against a wall like
Thunder had, the pegasus just hummed unhappily before near
stomping in the direction of the front door, the time to leave
having come according to him.
"Thank you for your help, Ironfire," Mana decided to linger so
as to be polite and ask one more question, paying no mind to the
pony he knew he'd probably find outside slumped against the side
of the building after losing his balance, "is there any specific
time you would want us to come by to pick up our things, or
would you rather we just check in every couple days?" He asked
just as Thunder stepped outside.

"There's nothing wrong with the castle smiths," Ironfire
interjected, "it's just, when there's only so many of them and
an entire guard unit to cater to, certain things have to be
sacrificed. Like form over function. That's why smiths like me
get regular customers from the guards when guards like you want
a personal touch, or to look the best," he cast a look towards
Thunder, "or like him who walk around in what can't be far off a
death trap," shaking his head, he waved as they began to leave,
"feel free to return in a couple of days. As I said, I'll try to
get this done as soon as possible. If it's not done by then, it
won't be far off and I'll be able to give you a much more
accurate time,"

"Unless, as I said, you're in the honor guard. They'll spend the
extra time to polish up their armor since all those guys really
do is stand around to make the castle look good." Mana could
hear the faint sound of something thudding lightly against the
outside of the shops wall, the unicorn having a pretty
completely accurate idea as to what was the cause. "Alright,
we'll see you in a couple days then. Thanks again." The guard
said, now turning and headng off to follow his partner and leave
Ironfire to his work.

"Until next time," Ironfire nodded, watching the unicorn guard
leave to join his friend outside. Turning to the armour he was
left with, Ironfire let out a sigh, "how do they get away with
it getting this bad," he questioned nopony in particular, "I'll
get this looking so good the glare will blind him," he smirked,
setting about the monumental task before him.
