Dents and Scratches
By: Thunderclap Date: December 23, 2013, 8:07 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
"Whyyyyyyyyyyy?" A pegasus whined in a questioning manner, him
being almost literally dragged along as he reluctantly followed
a unicorn down a busy street of Canterlot. Both wore the
signature armor of the royal guard, the silver set being worn by
the unicorn of the two shining in the sunlight as it showd of
its careful polish and radiated the presence a guard should
always have among the ponies of the kingdom, several small
jewels of varying types adding to the blue coated and purple
maned stallions look, the most noticeable of them being a larger
purple gem set into his helmet just beneath his horn. He walked
with discipline, back straight and shoulders broad, as he led
the way ahead of his partner.
The pegasus following in gold though...well... In comparison, he
may as well have looked like a pony who'd found his
grandfather's old suit of armor and put it on as a very
authentic Nightmare Night costume. Dented, scuffed, scratched,
nicked, the metal plates were banged up beyond what was normally
acceptable within the ranks of the kingdoms finest. The pony
wearing it was in good enough physical shape to fit the
description of a guard, though his gray coat and yellow mane,
hanging loosely over his head like a civilian without the helmet
he was supposed to wear being there to keep it in place, weren't
nearly as cleanly cut and groomed as the unicorn's.
"Because," the more proffessional looking of the two replied,
not bothering to turn around as he kept his pace so as to reach
their destination as quickly as possible, "you look like a tin
can that was thrown down the side of a rocky hill. You need to
make yourself look presentable, Thunder, I'm getting tired of
seeing the princess nearly roll her eyes whenever you show up
with that armor."
"Pfft, she doesn't roll her eyes and you know it." Thunder threw
back, beginning to hover with his wings out of boredom.
"Besides, having roughed up armor makes it clear to the bad guys
that we can handle ourselves."
"Or that you get roughed up a lot." The unicorn pointed out as
they started coming up to a building.
"Ugh.. fine, yeah, maybe that too, but what's the point of
getting this suit shiny when its probably just going to be
chewed up by a hydra or something in, like, a week?"
"Keeping your armor shiny is half the job." Was all he got after
that one, the unicorn then walking through the front door of the
forge he'd been looking for, Thunder lingering outside in a last
ditch attempt to make the other guard somehow forget where he
was and why. This of course failed, as with a step backwards he
was given a stern look from the unicorn, both of them then
enteringthe forge together, one with silence and the other with
a sigh.

The forge almost seemed alive. Stepping inside was almost like
passing through a wall of heat, created by the lit forge and hot
metals. Even with the windows and door open, it seemed almost
impossible to vent the hot air out fast enough. All throughout
was the sound of metal ringing on metal as the blacksmith was
working, shaping the metal for various purposes, most of which
only he and the customer would know. Looking up from his work,
as he tended to do from time to time, he spotted the new
arrivals and nodded towards them in greeting. Getting a few last
adjustments to the metal, he proceeded to dunk it in a quenching
barrel, bathing his immediate area in steam. Stepping away from
his anvil and forge, his attached the hammer to his belt and
lifted his goggles in his magic.
"Ah, good day to you sirs," he looks between the two
guardsponies that had entered, his eyes lingered on the pegasus
substantially longer than the unicorn, "I think I can wager a
guess as to the nature of your visit, but~ I've been wrong
before. So, to what do I owe the pleasure?"

"Afternoon." the unicorn returned the greeting with a nod, the
Pegasus grumbling lightly behind him as he followed with a head
held low in annoyance and attention catching onto anything of
interest within the forge. Noticing that the blacksmith running
the place probably already figured out why they were simply by
using his eyes, the unicorn continued, "Whatever guess you have
is most likely accurate. You see, my friend here has been
slacking off on the maintanence of his armor and has lately been
feeling awful bad about it-"
"Doooon't you put words in my mouth, Mana..." Thunder told
interrupted with a low tone, as if the simple mention of him
feeling bad over the lack of care for his armor was somehow a
jab at his very stallionhood.
"Deeply, painfully, unimaginably bad," the unicorn named Mana
ignored him, further explaining the pairs reason for visiting,
"so he decided he wanted to come down here to the business
district and find a respectable smith willing to fix his armor
right back up and make it shine like it does in his dreams-"
"I will harm you..."
"-may even want it looking good enough to impress the boys back
at the castle and get him put on a recruitment banner, just so
every new young hopeful signing up can marvel at how wonderfully
shiny they will look once they get their own set-"
"I have an extra request, good sir," Thunder said, now talking
directly to Iron with a friendly smile, as Mana continued to try
and drive him to the brink, "may I borrow that hammer you've got
there?"
"-maybe even a new helmet made to go with it-"
"Just for a second?"
"-oh, and let us not forget about the work that should be done
on his horseshoes, he hasn't been able to atop talking about
those for days..."
"Please?"

"As entertaining as your little exchange is, and I'm sure it
would be a sight to see, I try to make it a habit to not lend my
hammer to customers. Makes for poor repeat custom," he explained
as though it was the most normal thing ever, "though I have to
admit, I'd done a fair amount of touch ups and repairs for other
guards, that is quite possibly one of the worst maintained suits
I've seen," he chuckled, "if that's all, it's easy enough,
though from your little disagreement there, I'm assuming the
hard part is getting him to admit it and relinquish the armour,"
he surmised, looking at Thunder.

"Ugh!" Thunder replied to Iron, tone laden with disgust that
mirrored his expression after hearing his comment over the armor
he wore. "I'll have you know that each and every one of these
marks on my curaiss and boots are something to be proud of!
Badges of honor! There's a story for every scratch, a tale to
every dent, a novel's worth of memories for every dull scuff!"
"I would say more along the lines of a pamphlet's worth, but
okay." Mana threw in, being ignored as the Pegasus continued.
"I need not your forge nor these repairs that you all have
convinced yourselves are so important. I've survived just fine
without them up to now, and I see no reason for that to change
any time soon. So I say to you," a hoof was raised, it being
held in a fashion that seemed to encourage the blacksmith to
converse with it in Thunder's stead, "good day, sir!" Hoof still
hovering as he turned to leaveout the entrance of the forge, it
only rejoined him when it was required to assist his walking.
He didn't get far however, as Mana simply rolled his eyes and
used his magic to summon a large shield over the door, "Oh stop
acting like a mare who just had her spring mane style
criticized. You look like a fool wearing that, and most of the
'stories' those marks have attached to them aren't exactly ones
to be proud of, Thunder. Like that one on your shoulder you've
been going on about these last few days. Nopony wants to hear
how you survived a dangerous tumble down the stairs in the
castle foyer after you tripped over yourself."
Ignoring this blasphemy, Thunder didn't miss a beat when the
shield appeared him approaching as if he'd been prepared for,
no, expecting it to show up. In a true showing of how much he
didn't want to be here over something as simple as armor
maintanence, the stallion walked right up to the magic
barrier... then began to headbutt it repeatedly in a steady
rhythm, trying to make it shatter with the power of his forehead
alone.
Mana only sighed before turning back to Ironfire. "Just let him
do that for a bit," he said, the thudding of skull against
shield quite audible, "he'll get tired eventually then take a
nap or want a snack or something. So, you work on guard armor
frequently, do you? Any regulars? I may know them. My name is
Mana Burn by the way, and the child behind me is Thunderclap." A
hoof was offered to the blacksmith to shake as he introduced
himself and the pony who was no doubt in for a headache later.

Resisting the urge to roll his eyes at the antics of
Thunderclap, Ironfire accepted the offered hoof, "Ironfire," he
smiled, "and I get the occasional guard through, but most tend
to want to be in and out, things to do and all that, though I
pick up a few pieces of information here and there," he smirked,
befire turning his attention to the guard that, for all intents
and purposes, was throwing a tantrum, "so tell me, does one of
these 'badges of honor' have to get you nearly killed before
you'll see the folly in keeping them?" he questioned, looking
over the dents and scratches, "it won't be long before the thing
falls apart around you, or cracks at the worst time, or get's a
more serious dent. Tell me, how would you breath when you have a
large piece of dented metal crushing your chest?"

Thud "I can't even remember the last time I actually needed
repairs," Thunder replied, still bashing his head against the
barrier, "what's the point if I get this suit fixed up just so
it'll look exactly the same by next week?" thud "Why don't you
two just polish Mana's armor if you're so interested in such
things?" thud, and this time something was starring to get
jarred, "cause I've never felt it could help with flying, it
just weighs you down and," thud, "I heard you can screw with
someone mind if you mess around with something as personal as,"
thud, "I don't know where all the blue paint came from, but
maybe its just a petty protest being made by," thunk!
Keeping his forehead against the barrier after that one, his
attempt to rear back for another go ended with him just falling
back on his rump, his eyes rolling around in his head as Mana
walked up beside him with a noticeable lack of urgency. "Feeling
good?" The unicorn asked, tone making it seem as though this
kind of thing was a normal everyday occurance.
"I feel... dizzy..." the pegasus replied, opting to remain
seated as his head swayed from his attempts to get good looks of
the stars he was seeing.
"Yeah, you look dizzy. You know what would make you feel a
little better? Giving your armor over to Ironfire here."
"... I'm wearing armor...?"
"No," Mana used his magic to remove the stallion cuirass and
boots, them floating next to him after Thunder only flopped
tiredly down onto his belly in response to their absence, still
half out of it as he was just trying to remember where he was,
"you're not. Anyway," turning his attention back to Ironfire as
he walked back over to the blacksmith, Mana levitated the prices
of armor over in front of him to allow the stallion a better
look, "as you have already seen, these things need a lot of
work. Probably need to be almost entirely reforged actually. I'd
ask for you to just make him a new set if I didn't know that
he'd cry about it for Celestia knows how long." A glance back at
the pegasus, him having apparantly rolled onto his back and
started to mumble things to himself. "You mind if he just kind
of sits in the corner for a while? I think he actually may have
knocked something loose in that thick skull of his."

Ironfire couldn't help but let out a chuckle at their latest
exchange, shaking his head at Thunder's antics. Accepting the
armour from Mana, he took the opportunity to give the pieces a
more thorough look over, making mental notes about what needed
doing.
"No arguments there, reforging really would be the easier and
most likely quicker option," he agreed, "but I can understand
sentimental value. I'll fix it up, replace some of the padding,
polish, usual stuff. A couple of minor adjustments, he won't
even know he's wearing it," he paused, looking towards the lying
stallion, "well, when he's in the right frame of mind, anyway,"
he rolled his eyes, turning his attention back to Mana Burn,
"he's more than welcome to take a moment to recover. I'm still a
little surprised he's still concious. And that stubborn,"

"Eh, he puts himself through worse than that almost daily," Mana
said, not at all surprised that his friend could withstand
repeated blows to the skull and maintain consciousness, "and you
have no idea how bad he can get. The fact that he followed me in
here at all was a sign that this was him actually being
cooperative for once. Anyway, do you need to take measurments
and such? Now would probably be a good time since he's
submissive and the least likely to bite or kick."

"Measurements would be a good idea," he nodded, his magic
grabbing a hold of a par of paper, charcoal and measuring tape,
"I'd question the biting and kicking, but honestly, with that
display, I wouldn't actually be surprised,"
Gently, Ironfire began to take various measurements of Thunder,
jotting them all down on the paper for future reference. As he
did so, he maintained as much distance as he could while still
being able to read the tape, should Thunder decide he's not
quite docile enough and try kicking or biting.
