"Steel tends to be the main material used, just due to how
plentiful it is and it's density makes it ideal for balancing
the weapon," he explained, "there's a few other metals that
would work, but steel is definitely the most reliable and
durable,"

"Alright then." Foxtrot replies, "You mentioned something about
folds in the metal. Does that mean that this weapon is layered?
Or does the folding refer to a process in its creation?"

"The simplest way of thinking of it is that the metal is folded
repeatedly to even out the carbon content and to increase it's
own toughness," Ironfire answered, "it's not a bad method to get
the most out of the material, but it can get highly impractical
with anything much larger than a blade,"

"Yea, that would seem more of a hassle for anything larger than
that." The unicorn replies with a nod. "So with all this
knowledge you have I'm sure you've made some interesting things.
What was the best thing you've ever forged so far?"

Ironfire paused at that question, seemingly lost in thought for
a moment, "Best, huh?" he hummed, "couldn't really say there's a
best," he answered slowly, steadily, "best would likely be more
in the eyes of the one receiving it," he continued, "however, I
can say what I'm most proud of forging, which I believe would
satisfy your question," he had a small, almost wistful smile,
"it was many years ago now, I was just a small colt then,
learning the craft. It was just a small thing, an iron broach,
but it was a gift for my mother, and the first thing I made by
myself without any supervision or aid," he let out a long
breath, "she still keeps it on top of her jewellery box,"

Foxtrot chuckles and nods at the blacksmith's answer. "Yea,
usually the best things are the simplest. I recall when I made
my mom proud. It was when I beat her in a duel by cheating. She
knew I cheated but she was alright with that. Said that life
isn't fair, so when you have to, use every advantage you got or
that you yourself can make." The unicorn shrugs, "Not the most
noble lesson I learned, but effective. Sure as hay saved my hide
several times. So you said smithing was in your family, are both
of your parents blacksmiths? Do they have forges open around
here like yours?"

"My father was a blacksmith, but my mother was a jeweller.
Obviously, I took up blacksmithing like my father, but my
mother's jeweller skills come in useful for fine design and
detail," he explained, "but not only are they both retired now,
they also don't live in Canterlot any more. This forge was
originally my fathers until they moved," he paused after his
explanation before looking towards Foxtrot, "what about your
parents?"

The bell above the door rings, as an armored white pegasus
pushes the door open and enters the forge. She's carrying
something on her back, wrapped in a cloth to keep everything
together. It was obvious from few pointy objects poking out from
under the cloth, that she was at least carrying weapons with
her. She placed the package on the counter, and waited, as the
blacksmith she came to meet seemed to have another customer at
the moment.

"My folks? Heh, both guards through and through. Pop introduced
me to the contracting occupation, mom introduced me to the
katana." He sighs, "Ah stars rest their souls." Before he
continues he notices the new arrival and steps to the side.
"Ironfire, I'm gonna browse the armors for a bit." The unicorn
nods to the new arrival before trotting to examine the wares.

"Both guards, huh? I might have seen them at some point, since I
get a few through here," his next thought was interrupted at the
sound of his door's bell, indicating another customer, "very
well," he nodded at Foxtrot's statement, allowing him to greet
the new arrival.
"And good day to you," he said in greeting, looking at the
wrapped up package on his counter, "so what brings you here?"
