"As you said, I've been doing this for years. Learnt all I know
from my parents," Ironfire explained, "as for enchantments, I'm
afraid that's outside of my league. I wouldn't mind learning,
but haven't had ready access to a teacher. Also haven't looked,
but I get lost in my work too easily," he shrugged, "guess I'm
just content with what I have,"

Foxtrot nods, "Yea, I guess you do what you love and you never
work a day in your life. Plus smithing itself is a solid
occupation since there's always going to be someone who needs
something made or fixed... or both I suppose. Speaking of
which..." the unicorn glances down to his blade, "This is a
hypothetical question... could it be possible to reforge a
weapon into something else? Like turning this katana into
something like... uh, a broadsword or saber or something of that
nature?"

"Always jobs to be done," as if to emphasize this point, he
gestured at his work book, "as for reforging, the blade is metal
at the end of the day. I can melt it down and reforge it into
anything. The only limitation if the amount of material to work
with, but that could be offset easily enough by just using some
of the metal I have in store. There a reason you decided to
ask?"

Foxtrot shrugs at Iron's inquiry, "Just wondering. I've heard
stories of legendary swords shattering and being reformed into
something stronger." He then chuckles, "Also real examples of
guard recruits getting too rough with their flimsy standard
issue weapons. Quartermaster always says they'll get it reforged
but I never saw it myself." His hoof falls onto his sword as he
shifts it on the counter a bit, "Thank Celestia I've never come
across that problem; even more so with how old this piece of tin
actually is."

"It's not unheard of for something to break and be made into
something stronger, but that's probably more to do with the
skill of the smith than the materials. Depending on how it
breaks, it's usually just easier to reforge the entire thing
than it is to repair it," Ironfire elaborated, "and sometimes it
can be cheaper to just replace it entirely, which is probably
the case with the standard issue stuff, with it being made in
large quantities for cheap usually. Prior experience has shown
me that katanas are actually pretty durable in comparison to the
standard sword, on the other hoof, they're many, many times more
difficult to repair should they actually break,"

Foxtrot nods as Ironfire explains the process, "Yea, that would
seem like the most logical of choices. I've fought those with
basic swords and theirs would break and they would be so
surprised about it. 'Oh wow your sword must be invincible!' They
would say and I'm like... 'No.' Then again half of those
fighters never took care of their weapons either so it was only
a matter of time before their steel snapped one way or another."
The unicorn puts a hoof to his chin, "Actually I might need to
get some maintenance supplies for my sword. I've been using some
cleaning solution and oil for some time but I'm running out of
both. Do you have any recommendations... and do you sell said
recommendations?"

"As I said, katanas aren't the most common of sword, but I
believe I should have some items available. Let's see," he
trailed off a bit as he stepped aside into his forge proper. It
took him a few minutes before he returned, carrying a box of
supplies with his magic before putting it on his counter top and
rooting around in it, "Hmm... Oiling cloth, oil, wiping cloth
and tissues for excess oil..." as he spoke, the various items
were neatly stacked side by side on the counter top in front of
the box, "that covers cleaning the blade, though if you've been
doing that yourself, you likely guessed. As for maintenance of
the blade and edge itself, you'll likely want something like
this," he finished, producing a box with various cuboid stones,
"water stones. Soak them in water for about 20 minutes prior to
use gently run both sides of the edge along the stone a hundred
times, using the finer grain stones as you progress," he pointed
from left to right along the stones, making sure it was clear,
"it's generally a good idea to think of it more like polishing
than grinding else you may damage the blade with too much
pressure,"

Foxtrot's eyebrows certainly rose when the blacksmith presented
the recommended equipment, more so at the stones. "Woah, I had
no idea they came in different sizes. I have the one in the
middle but haven't seen these others before. Then again that
would explain why my sword never got as sharp as I'd expected."
The unicorn pauses for a moment, "Ok so 100 strokes, 20 per
cube... Got it." He looks back to Ironfire, "So uh, how much do
you know about katana's in general? I mean I'm awesome with
techniques to use them, but just physical aspects I'm not so
well at."

"Would depend on what you were looking for, exactly," Ironfire
started, "unlike you, I'm not sure of any specific techniques,
but I know enough about them to forge them, repair them,
maintain them and clean them. I know their shape, curvature,
carbon quantity, number of folds in the metal, anything like
that," he rattled off the various details as they came to him,
"so again, if you're looking for anything in particular, feel
free to narrow it down,"

Foxtrot glanced down to his katana once more before looking back
up to the blacksmith, "Ok lets start with the basics. What are
katanas like these normally made out of? I've heard steel many
times; you mentioned something about carbon as well?"
