NN: What a Fright...fully Drab Costume!
By: PLOTYNSTYNE Date: October 25, 2014, 3:22 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Canterlot has never been much of a place to cause a ruckus, or
doesn't like to think of itself as such. It's a town with
considerable reputation for class and refinement, rather well
justified in it if its residents do say so themselves. Many of
Ponyville's quaint little customs don't translate well into the
posh environment that Canterlot lends itself to, seen as fit for
ruffians and rubes who can't appreciate the finer pleasures of
life.
Tonight...is a bit of an exception. Though its tone is somewhat
subdued compared with the happy-go-lucky Ponyville festivities,
Canterlot's own Nightmare Night could hardly be labeled as less
than the small town's. Though some turn up their noses at
actually participating in the fun, even the most wet blankets
can't deny that it's a wonderful night to show how "in" they are
with the latest Nightmare Night fashions or pioneer a few,
compete with their neighbors to have the most expensive and
elaborate decorations surrounding their domiciles or places of
business, or rake in the bits from those who did so appreciate
the spirit of the night.
Tonight, the main streets are lined with vendors, stalls, and
various stations where goodies can be bought or earned by
enterprising young or not-so-young colts and fillies. Large
public spaces and parks are filled with ponies wheeling,
dealing, or showing off their goodies and costumes. Themed
costume contests advertise their prizes, and even a few haunted
houses have been set up boasting things even scurrier than the
prospect of the hoity-toity Canterlot elite letting their
flawless outfits gather dust.
There is also plenty of entertainment for those who consider
themselves too highbrow to participate in those boorish
activities, though. What Canterlot citizen doesn't like a good
excuse to throw a dinner party? Several public ones are set up
in various venues across the city, and invitations were sent
weeks or even months in advance for some of the private ones.
Thus all ponies, regardless of their penchant for paying more
than they ought for a name attached to their couture, can find
some enjoyable activity in the night when the shadows come out
to play...

Normally a night off would be annoying, but a holiday,
especially his favorite one, was acceptable. It was really the
Night Guard's time to shine anyway with how the princess they
served was often the star, so Gladius didn't hold any grudges
with his superiors for "letting" him have a break. Would
probably be nice to check out the festival for once anyway
instead of spend the whole night counting, polishing and then
counting everything in the armory of the castle over and over.
He needed a costume though... would be lame if he went looking
normal while everypony else dressed up. But Gladius, due to time
and lack of materials to work with, had very limited options
available to him, what little he could scrounge together having
forced him to make due with a pretty basic "zombpony" kind of
look. Some make up here and there, tear up some old clothes that
he was going to throw out anyway since they were falling apart
as it was, fake blood and so on and he was done up... alright.
He wasn't going to win any contests o course, but he could at
least walk around feeling the spirit of the holiday.
He gave himself a once over in his mirror, feeling a bit proud
of how decent his makeup job had been considering his rush, then
nodded to signify it would do before heading outside. A haunted
house sounded fun right about now, maybe followed up with some
games or having a few of the treats being sold out in the
streets. last year, if he remembered, there was this one stall
set up by the park that had these delicious smelling pumpkin
spice cakes on a stick covered in a pretty sweet looking
frosting with was, of course, decorated to fit the spirit of the
night. He made a mental note to make darn sure he checked to see
if that stall was set up again for this year since,
unfortunately, last year he'd missed out.

Woodwind stops for a moment to take in his surroundings, pushing
up the brim of the big floppy pointed hat upon his head. He's
been wandering for a while now, more or less aimlessly, just
taking in the decorations and various costumes on display. His
own wasn't that impressive, simply an old, purple robe and
matching hat, along with a long stick to use as a staff. He
doesn't recognize where he's managed to end up, but he's not
particularly worried. Being a pegasus, he could easily just fly
up and find his way home, even with the robe somewhat hampering
his wings. He watches the other ponies pass on by for a few
minutes, none really paying him any mind as he stands off to the
side. After a couple more moments, he decides he'll get back to
wandering, and turns to head off down a nearby street.
Something, or rather, somepony catches his eye though, and he
stops again to look around for the orange coat of a pony he
thought he recognizes. He spots the orange coated zombie quick
enough, and smiles slightly. He thinks that's Gladius under the
makeup. The brown pegasus trots after the off-duty guard.
Thankfully, Gladius doesn't seem to be in particular hurry, and
Woodwind soon catches up to him. He waves once he's close enough
to be sure it's the right pony and catches his eye. He takes a
moment to pull out his notebook and write in it. "Hi. I like
your costume." He smiles as he shows the guard the notebook.
"Have you had a good night?"

Distracted by the thought of frosted cake on a stick, Gladius
didn't notice the other stallion right away, his head being in
sweet sugary clouds up until he noticed a wave in his peripheral
vision. He blinked and narrowed his eyes at the other pony, it
taking him a sec to realize who it was as the distance between
them shrank. Finally picking up on his identity, Gladius smiled.
"Hey, Woodwind. Nice wizard look," he complimented, taking in
Windy's choice of costume and assuming it to be what it came
across as. He let Windy take a second to write down his message,
then replied with, "Heh, you do? It's just a quick makeup job,
but I suppose it did come out pretty alright for how thrown
together it was. Guess binging on horror films and books for the
month made me pick up a few things, huh?"
Windy's next question was met with a shrug, "Eh, my nights
really only just started to be honest. Only came out not too
long ago. So far I haven't really done much, though I am trying
to find a decent looking haunted house somewhere to explore or
some other activity. Dunno where to start, is my problem. Have
you done much so far? Had any fun spooks or scarys?"

"Thanks." Woodwind writes at Gladius' compliment, and adjusts
his hat slightly. While he's satisfied with his costume, the
floppy brim of the hat does get in the way a little bit. He nods
at the larger pegasus with a smile when he suggests that
watching a bunch of horror movies and reading books taught him
how to do zombie makeup. "Definitely." He shifts a little bit
nervously when the guard mentions that he's looking for a good
haunted house. "I haven't been out very long either." She
writes, shaking his head. "[i]I do know of a haunted house my
sister wanted to go to though. I'm usually too scared to go to
them though." He looks away for a few moments, feeling strangely
sheepish about it. "I could take you there though. And maybe it
wouldn't be so bad if somepony else was with me."

"Recruiting a guard to guide you through a spooky house, eh?"
Gladius teased, poking Windy's shoulder with a chuckle, "Sounds
fun. I don't see why I can't spend some time protecting you from
all them ghouls and ghosties, so sure. Do you know where it is
or will we need to find your sister to figure it out? If it's a
popular one we can probably just ask around."

Woodwind gives a sheepish smile at the guard's teasing, though
it does get a silent chuckle out of him. He nods when Gladius
asks him if he knows where it is, and takes out his notebook. "I
think I should be able to find it from here." He writes, taking
a look around the area they're in. He had been there not too
long ago, but hadn't gone in with his sister and had chosen to
just wander on his own instead. Still, it had been long enough
that Starlight had likely been through it and gone off to find
something else to do. There was no telling where she could be
now. "I don't know where she'd be by now. I think it's this way
though." Woodwind puts his notebook away and points down one of
the streets before starting off in that direction, though he
doesn't keep far ahead of Gladius.

"Lead the way! I'll keep an eye out for any ghosts and ghouls
that might jump out at us on the way." Gladius promised, letting
Windy take point through the streets so as to follow him to the
haunted house he'd mentioned. It wasn't too much of a walk, the
pair weaving through crowds and between busy groups moving about
as they hunted down the attraction claiming to offer spooks, and
soon enough they came upon a moderately sizable building all
dressed up for the holiday. Spooky cobwebs in every corner,
illusion magic cast over the windows to cause ponies to catch
the briefest of glimpses of monsters of some sort zipping by or
popping up only to vanish back into the dark in the blink of an
eye, a big ol' painted moon cut out type deal with a silhouette
of Nightmare Moon's head over it to best attract attention, and
other eye catchers all adding to the festive atmosphere of the
holiday around them.
"That the one?" Gladius asked, nodding towards the building as a
group of friends were leaving and teasing each other. They
seemed to have had a good enough time, though from what Gladius
was picking up it could just have been because one member of
their clique was a pretty big wuss and was a total mark for
these kinds of jump houses.

Woodwind smiles at Gladius' joking assertion that he'd keep any
creepy crawlies away. There certainly were plenty of ponies
dressed as things that could count around, in varying degrees of
realism. It ends up being only a few minutes walk to the haunted
house, and he didn't even have to stop and think about the
direction at all. The big old house was certainly impressively
decorated, the windows even kinda creeping Woodwind out a bit
with their vague shapes peeking out. He nods at Gladius'
question, turning to watch the group that's just leaving. He has
no doubts he's going to end up being much like the one being
teased. He glances over at Gladius. Well... He might as well
give a try, it can't be that bad right? It's not like anything
in there is real after all. He looks back at the house and
starts heading for the entrance, though he grows more nervous
the closer they get. Still... He can't really turn back can he?

"Cool, then let's get in there," Gladius said as he boldly began
to trot in the house's direction, the sounds coming from inside
becoming increasingly audible the closer they drew. Wails,
screams, yelps and laughter added to the noise of the hoof
traffic passing through the city street as well as to the
attention grabbing showman stationed near the entrance and
grabbing as much attention as he was able. Dressed up like some
kind of witchdoctor, he called out to passersby and challenged
the courage of any that walked past without exploring the house
while also wishing luck and a "safe passing" to any that dared
enter, all of this making the guard chuckle a little as he
himself passed by the stallion whom wished him well. Seeing the
more noticeably timid stallion of the pair caused the pony t
adjust his tactic accordingly however, and instead of his usual
call the witchdoctor pony guy decided isntead to try and give
Windy a start by suddenly jumping in his direction with a shout,
whatever magic being used to fuel most of the house's spooks
kicking in at this time to add some scary green illusionary
flames to blast up behind him and add to his costume. To his
amusement, he'd managed to get a couple passing ponies to jump
as a bonus.
