       The First Step
By: Jazz Date: October 18, 2014, 5:25 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Jazz glances around at the apparently abandoned buildings
surrounding Tech Tock as she approaches the workshop. The white
mare, unaware of the rumors regarding the little inventor's
home, finds it strange that all of these seemingly perfectly
good houses are empty. Maybe she'll ask Haywire about it when
she gets there. She trots up to the door and pauses for a
moment, wondering if she should knock. Does this place count as
a shop? She doesn't see a sign anywhere... Well, it doesn't hurt
just to knock. As she reaches up to rap on the door, the little
box next to it suddenly bursts open with a *pop*, spraying
confetti and silly string everywhere while a sign that read
"Welcome to Tech Tock!!!" deployed from the top, alongside a
pair of lit sparklers. Jazz jumps slightly at the sudden noise,
then giggle when she sees the sign. Guess that answers that
question. Not seeing much point in knocking now, Jazz opens the
door and steps inside. "Hello?" She calls, looking around at the
heaps of machinery scattered throughout the entire room.

As much as she wanted to steer clear of the machines to avoid
any potential scares, Star knew she had to help Haywire. She had
to both help him achieve his dream and repay him for letting her
stay with him in his workshop. It was for this reason she was
hesitantly picking through the various piles around the
workshop, doing her best to sort through it and organize some of
the clutter around the place. As she did so, the welcoming
machine at the entrance of the workshop sounded off, causing
Star to perk her ears and look towards the front door, glad for
the distraction and for somepony new to talk to.
"Hi there!" Star called cheerily to the pony entering the shop
as she trotted over to meet her. "Welcome to Tech Tock, where
the only limit to creation is your imagination!" She paused for
a moment, mind wandering back to the other day when Clarity had
entered the shop, and Star had told Haywire that she wasn't sure
he could make a certain invention without magic... She'd need to
apologize to him for that, for not believing in that motto.
Mentally shaking herself back to the situation at hand, she
smiled brightly to Jazz and continued. "Thanks for paying us a
visit... How can we help you today, miss?"

       ---------------------------------------------------------
While there were still the occasional growls and grumbles
whenever she did something they considered annoying, since
Clarity's visit the machines of Tech Tock hadn't tried to pull
off any further pranks on Star. They hadn't apologized, of
course, and they often still attempted to raise tension every
once in a bit, but no full pranks had been pulled. Except for
the usual ones amongst each other. And Bubo had at some point
found himself buried inside of a cream pie, further adding to
the strange mystery that was how the machines managed to keep
using edible items as ammunition for their hijinks when Hay
himself couldn't afford much food for the shop.
Anywho, the new pony entering the shop caused a small murmur to
spread among the machines as Star greeted her. What they were up
to, who could tell, but for now at least they seemed to be
remaining relatively quiet. Whether or not this was a good
       thing, who knows.
Further back into the shop there was what looked like the a dome
styled... thingie... Kind of shaped like a turtle shell
actually, and from inside there came the occasional loud clangs,
bangs and sounds of things scrapping or clattering that Star had
most likely had to put up with for a little while now. On top of
the dome was a hatch, and soon after Star had spoken the shops
motto it swung open to release a large poof of smoke that
billowed upwards and left behind a plenty thick trail of smoke
that slowly began to thin out. A cuple seconds later, a pair of
sooty but green hooves were swung out to grasp the edge of the
opening and help Hay poke his head out to excitedly grin around
the wrench in his mouth as he looked to see who had come to
       visit.
"Hi, Yazz!" He called, flailing a hoof in an enthusiastic wave
hello as he mispronounced the mare's name, him then spitting out
the wrench he held in his teeth and letting it clatter back into
the small collection of tools on the floor nearby. He then...
well... he didn't necessarily "climb" out of his shell machine
thing so much as he did pull himself out and then let himself
roll down it, yet he still managed to land on his hooves at the
bottom and start trotting over towards Yazz with a spring in his
       step.
"Haven't seen you in a while. How have you been? Oh," he turned
to Star to do a quick introduction between the mares, "Star,
this is Yazz. She's Clarity's mom. I met her a little bit ago
when I helped out with a party for them. Yazz, this is Star, my
new assistant. What can we do for you?" They'd only met once
before, but with how Hay sounded when speaking one would think
that they were long tome friends. Then again, he sounded like
that with everypony, so pretty normal for him.
Bubo, arriving on the scene carrying a pretty heavy looking bag
of extra parts and tools out from a back corner of the room,
stressed his wings on over to the turtle shell device
whatchamajiggy before dropping his cargo onto the growing pile
of useful stuff and things growing up next to it, him noticing
the new arrival and taking flight in order to fly over and land
on his usual spot atop Haywire's head, him then titling his own
noggin in curiosity at the newcomer.
"And this is Bubo. Bubo, this is Yazz!" Bubo raised a wing as he
gave two cheery chirps to sound a small hello to the new mare.

Jazz gives Star a friendly smile as the other mare walks over to
greet her, and then a slight giggle at the shop's apparent
motto. Hopefully they live up to it, what she had in mind
probably isn't going to be easy. "Hi there." She greets,
stopping for a moment to gather her thoughts on what she wants.
"I was-" She starts to say, only to be interrupted by the hatch
on the turtle dome thingy popping open in a rush of smoke,
followed by Haywire poking his head out. She waves back at the
messy green stallion, chuckling at the mispronunciation of her
name. "Hi!" She calls out as the inventor tumbles down the side
of the machine. "I've been good, how are you doing?" She answers
as Haywire trots over. She holds out a hoof to Star when Hay
introduces her, a cheerful grin on her face. "Nice to meet you
Star. And it's actually Jazz." She doesn't really mind Haywire
getting her name wrong, it's kind of amusing actually, but she
figures she might as well be introduced properly. Her attention
is drawn back to the turtle machine at the sound of something
falling, and her eyebrows rise at the mechanical bird flying
it's way toward them. The white unicorn "oooooh."s quietly under
her breath as she watches Bubo come down to land on Hay's head.
If he could do something like that than surely he could make
what she wants, right? "Hi Bubo!" She says, a wide grin on her
face. She turns her attention back to Haywire and Star, her
smile fading somewhat. "Well." She starts, looking between the
two ponies. "Around the time the dance was Clarity told me about
when she visited, and mentioned Bubo." She says, gesturing to
the little robot. "Hearing about that kinda got me thinking...
About twenty years ago my wife lost most of her hind legs. And I
was wondering if... you'd be able to make something to help
       her."

"Looks like ponies are talking about you, Bubo," Hay playfully
pointed out to Bubo, the bird snuggling up on top of his head
and looking a touch shy at the thought as haywire listened to
Jazz explain why she was visiting, her earlier correction of his
mispronunciation of her name not being that big a surprise to
him. He had been mostly deaf when he met her after all.
"Oh, did you have anything in mind?" He asked when she was
finished before then allowing his mind to start running rampant
with most likely bad ideas for what they could do, "Do you want
me to try and make a special super chair? I could try to build
one that can go between land and sea on the fly. Oh! Oh! Fly! Is
she a pegasus already? If not, then maybe I can figure out how
to build wings for a pony! That would so so cool! It didn't work
out so great the last few times I tried, but who knows for this
time! Star!" He turned an excited grin to his assistant, eyes
positively gleaming behind his goggles, "I may need to study and
take some measurements of your wings for science! I-if you don't
mind, that is... hehe... I would go with what I know of bird
wings, but pony wings seem a lot different."

Upon hearing noise behind her, Star glanced back over her
shoulder to greet the source of the noise, knowing it to be
Haywire. She watched him approach before looking back to Jazz,
smiling and waving first in greeting when the mare was
introduced, followed by her blinking when she mentioned she was
Clarity's mother. Star wondered briefly if she was here to chew
the both of them out for what had happened the other day...
though she seemed like she wasn't irritated about anything...
"It's nice to meet you too, miss Jazz," Star responded politely
while she still had a moment and it was still fresh on her mind,
then listened as Jazz told them that her wife had lost her hind
legs and that she'd come looking for a replacement.
A look of sympathy crossed Star's face, knowing that it must
have been difficult for them, but she honored Jazz for sticking
by her wife's side through it all. It must've taken a lot of
love to get through that, not to mention last twenty years. She
then glanced over to Hay as he started talking about wings and
trying to get measurements of her wings for 'science'. She
giggled and responded with, "You can still certainly do that,"
as she nuzzled his shoulder before continuing, "But I don't
think that's what miss Jazz had in mind. It sounds like she's
looking for something to help her wife walk again. I could
certainly think you'd be able to make some kind of hydraulic, or
gear-operated system, or some mixture of the two... Just as long
as it didn't try to get a mind of its own." Those words were
left as a subtle warning, relating to the other machines behind
her in the shop, as she looked back to Jazz. "The best place for
us to start would be to ask if you had anything in mind."

Jazz grins at Haywire's suggestion of a super chair. It's not
what she has in mind, but the mental image of Thyme in a super
chair is amusing nonetheless. At his next question she shakes
her head. "No, she's a unicorn." She says, looking over at Star
when Hay turns to talk to her. While she doesn't pay much mind
to the sudden quaver in Haywire's voice, she does notice his
blush and giggle when the mare nuzzles him. Well, that was cute.
Jazz wonders if they're a couple. Though... if they are it's
unusual for him to respond like that. It made it look more like
he has a crush. She giggles softly. She knows it's not really
any of her business, but they would be so cute together...
Putting that aside for the moment, she nods at Star's guess that
amphibious super chairs and mechanical wings weren't what she'd
had in mind. "At the dance you mentioned you were working on
an..." She pauses to think for a moment. "Exoskeleton, I think
you called it? It got me thinking that that's kind of like a
mechanical limb. And then I heard about Bubo from Clarity. That
got me pretty excited because if you can make a whole bird,
surely you can do just a couple limbs right?" She gives the trio
a hopeful smile. "And that's what I had in mind, replacement
limbs. Do you think you can do that?"

Hay pauses to think, hoof tapping his chin as his tongue stuck
out of the side of his mouth a bit in concentration as he
thought back to the party where he'd met Jazz and tried to
recall the deafened conversation to the best of his ability.
       Exoskeleton... Exoskeleton... Ah!
"Oh! I remember now! It's my invention where it can help ponies
carry more weight," He explained more to Star than Jazz as this
was the first time it had ever been mentioned in front of the
pegasus, "it wraps around the body and transfers the weight of
whatever somepony has on their backs through the framing instead
of just the body and takes some of the load off. It can't work
as legs on their own though... But maybe I could take the design
and add in some nice gears and stuff like you said.
"I'll need to look at them again, however!" Hay explained, voice
growing excited at the idea of building something fancy and new
from something that had, like with most of his inventions, not
seen the light of day in some time "And that means we'll have to
find it! Star! Could you please check over in those piles by the
prototype portable sun generator? You know, the one by the
table? I think I last left my exoskeleton either over there,
underneath a bike-airship hybrid that has a sticky note stuck
onto it saying 'To be continued', or... It's in here!" At that
Haywire literally dove into a pile of scrap and discarded half
built inventions to his right, him somehow managing to treat the
collection of hard materials as if it were water like an overly
wealthy duck diving into a pool of gold coins.
       He didn't surface.
This was relatively normal around here.

Invention that could help ponies carry more weight... That
certainly sounded like it had some very practical uses. She
wondered briefly why he'd never finished a project like that,
but that train of thought dissipated when he mentioned having to
find it, followed by asking her to look in a certain spot.
"Yeah. I can do that," she started to say, only to pause when he
dove into a nearby pile of stuff. She stared for a moment, still
baffled as to how he could do that without hurting him self or
being completely stopped by the hard surface, before shaking her
head and doing her best to dismiss it before she gave herself a
       headache.
She walked over to the place Haywire had asked her to search,
the place in question needing to take her a couple minutes
longer than normal because she had to regain her bearings a
couple times to find the 'portable sun generator'. When she did
finally get over there, it didn't take too much searching before
she did indeed find what could be described as the exoskeleton.
When she reached for it however, it darted out from underneath
her hoof. She blinked in surprise and stared at it for a moment
in bewilderment, then moved over to it to try to pick it up.
Once she reached it again, the exoskeleton darted away from her
once more--this time though, she caught a glimpse of why: some
sort of... small, weird, peanut-shaped thing was dragging it
away from her for some reason. She pouted for a moment, then
tried to snatch it quickly after closing some of the distance,
only to be unsuccessful. "Hay, I found it over here--but
something doesn't want me to have it and keeps pulling it away
from me." She kept a close eye on it as she called out to him,
following it wherever it went if it decided to try and run and
       hide.

Jazz briefly glances over in the direction Haywire had indicated
at his mention of a "portable sun generator". While she has no
idea which of the devices over there it could be, it sounds
pretty interesting. Maybe she'll ask about it a bit later. She
looks back at Haywire in time to see him dive straight into a
pile of gadgets and managing to go right through it like he'd
jumped into a pool. The white unicorn giggles softly. Seems like
a useful talent to have in a place like this. As Star moves off
to begin her own search, Jazz remains where she is, unsure if
she should try to help out. Well... They probably know the place
well enough, so she turns to just looking around at the gizmos
and gadgets littering the workshop. She has no idea what most of
them could be for, though a couple she might be able to take a
guess at. There was some kind of giant dough mixer machine past
the pile Haywire had jumped into, though it has a few strange
odds and ends sticking off of it in places. A little to her
right was what looks like an ordinary potted plant, nestled
among the doodads piled on a table, and she was almost sure it
wasn't there when she'd arrived. Before she can investigate and
possibly reveal it as a well disguised sprinkler or perhaps a
floral invader from another dimension, Star speaks up about
having found the exoskeleton, and that something was trying to
keep it away from her. Jazz trots over toward the other mare,
trying to spot whatever it is. She can definitely see something
shifting around underneath and around the machines, though she
has difficulty making out what it is. "Is there anything I can
do to help?" She asks, keeping her eye on the moving object and
coming to a stop near Star.
