A Midnight Stroll
By: Lamplight Date: October 1, 2014, 10:27 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Lamplight steps out the door to her inn, taking a deep breath of
the night air and letting out a slow exhale. Today had been
hectic; she'd had more customers than usual. One group,
apparently new and town and halfway through a night of bar
hopping, had drunkenly decided Lamplight's little tavern wasn't
lively enough and tried to start a fight. Thankfully she'd
managed to deal with that without it escalating to far, but it
was still stressful. At least the day was over now, though, and
she could take a nice relaxing walk through town. She takes
another deep breath and sets off, going in to particular
direction and in no particular hurry. She wanders for a while,
not really trying to keep track of time other than taking the
occasional glance up at the moon. Eventually, she decides to
take a rest and finds a nearby bench, the mare laying down on it
and looks around to see if she recognizes where she's at. The
night isn't particularly bright, but she thinks she ended up
fairly close to the schoolhouse. The orange unicorn rolls over,
deciding to watch the sky for a little while before she heads on
back home.

Just her luck. It's the middle of the night, and the train is
late. Agilene stood idly in the station waiting for her ride to
arrive, yawning more than she would normally. She thought enough
was enough. Perhaps it would be better to find a motel and stay
for the night. Besides, it is getting cold, and Agilene thought
it would be a good idea to pack light. All she brought was a bag
hanging by her side with flash light inside, in case she wants
to do night flying. With the current situation, it seems night
flying would be a good option.
Agilene, despite her tired state, managed to propel herself
upwards and flap her wings. She landed on the roof of a near by
building and scanned the area in hopes of finding a motel near
by. She faced the direction of a particular schoolhouse. Before
continuing on, she turned on her flash light and held it in her
mouth, its light showing her way. From there, she began leaping
from building to building in the direction she faced.
In just under a minutes, Agilene reached an area with a few
benches, and a schoolhouse ahead. Surprisingly, even in her
tired state, she was still able to do all that jumping. Agilene
saw more buildings ahead, a few still lit up, so she launched
herself upwards. Unfortunately, things begin to turn for the
worse when she loses her balanced and tilts more to the left.
She gasped, and accidentally let go of her flash light. From
what the light illuminated as it fell forward, it was heading
towards somepony on a bench.
Agilene's instincts kicked in, and she dived for the flashlight,
hoping it won't land on the pony.

It was the middle of the night, and Nightingale sat on top of
her "throne" that was made of the playground's jungle gym, which
provided her one of the best views of the town before her--or at
least, one of the best views that she knew of and could reach. A
small blue and green aurora swirled about over the filly's head
as she scanned the town, her usual boredom having set in and
making her begin to create illusions to bide her time. As she
had done countless times before, she was on the lookout for any
suspicious ponies so the 'Black Widow'--obviously stolen from a
comic book--could keep the rest of Ponyville safe, or so she
believed. The filly's coat was changed to black, and her mane a
combination of copper and peach, nearly identically similar to
the superhero Nightingale had plagiarized.
Her constant vigilance finally paid off, and her "keen" eyes
locked onto somepony wandering down the road towards the
schoolhouse she was perched near. Narrowing her eyes a little
bit, Nightingale decided to investigate and hopped down from her
throne and moved over to the mare in what she thought was a
silent trot, despite it being nowhere near so in reality. Once
she finally got closer to the mare, she noticed all she was
doing as resting on the bench--though maybe, Nightingale
guessed, she was waiting for somepony else for some kind of
super secret evil meeting. Doing her best to hide, and decided
maybe she'd wait... At least until more movement caught her eye.
A pegasus, it seemed, jumping around from roof to roof. Maybe
this was her contact? She waited as the pegasus got closer and
closer... then apparently dropped her flashlight as she passed
over them.
Acting quickly, Nightingale dashed forward to envelop the
flashlight with her green magical aura, making it levitate
safely away from Lamplight. "Stop right there, criminal scum!"
Nightingale called out to Agilene, the fearless filly glaring
defiantly at the pegasus. "Attacking innocent civilians, I see!
You should be ashamed! Turn yourself in before I make you!"

Lamplight isn't sure how long she's been here by this point; the
stress of the day combined with the late hour suddenly hitting
her as she lays on the bench, and for a while she dozes on and
off. She knows she should head back to her inn, and her nice
comfy bed waiting there, but right now getting up feels like
just too much work. It is getting a bit chilly though, so she
can't stay out much longer. For a few minutes she distracts
herself with thoughts of a nice mug of hot chocolate and
snuggling under her blankets when she gets back home. She
doesn't notice the pegasus jumping from rooftop to rooftop, or
the same pony dropping her flashlight right above Lamplight and
diving in an attempt to catch it. Not until the green glow of
magic engulfs the falling item anyway. The orange mare is
startled out of her thoughts by the sudden glow uncomfortably
close to her head, and rolls off the bench and onto her hooves.
She looks around in confusion, gaze going between Nightingale
and Agilene. Attacking? She eyes the flashlight still held in
Nightingale's magic before looking back at Agilene, who
definitely doesn't look particularly hostile. "Er... What's
going on?" She asks, looking between the two other ponies.

So much for a peaceful night flight, Agilene thought. It went
from finding a motel to trying to not wake up a napping pony. If
she could grab this flashlight in time, she could simply fly off
like nothing has happened. She doesn't even want to think how
many times the light shined on the mare's face as she slept on
the bench.
As Agilene was about to catch the flashlight, it quickly became
enveloped in a green glow. Clearly, magic was at work. Along
with that came the voice of a young filly close by. A filly
adorably accusing her of being a criminal. Attacking civilians?
Turn herself in? Yeah, right.
She avoided the flashlight altogether. Agilene performed a front
flip that propelled herself forward, and away from the glowing
object. Before landing, she opened her wings to descend slowly,
making sure her hooves touch the ground without making a noise.
She turned back and looked up at the flashlight, wondering who
is carrying it. Perhaps that filly was a unicorn?

Fully expecting a response, Nightingale continued to glare up at
Agilene as if she truly believed the mare were some kind of
evil-doer. When the mare didn't respond, however, Nightingale's
cheeks puffed up a bit in frustration, despite the fact that
really only the area around her horn could be seen in the
darkness, thanks to the magic aura there. "So, resisting arrest,
huh? Good, I was hoping for a little action!" she said, only to
look over to Lamplight when she spoke up. "What's going on is
this pony just tried to give you a concussion! And if I hadn't
been here to save the day, you'd have gone home with a few
booboos. But no need to thank me, civilian! All in a day's work
for the Black Widow!
"Now, as for you, pegasus!" she called as she returned her
attention to the mare in question. "I'm gonna give you one last
chance to give up before I put you in a world of hurt! What do
you say?"

Lamplight looks between the two other ponies for a second or
two, a slight frown creasing her brow. She's not convinced
Agilene had actually been trying to hurt her. She would have
flown off instead of coming down and just standing there if she
had, right? The orange mare takes another glance at Nightingale,
though the darkness makes the little filly hard to make out.
"Are you sure she did it on purpose?" She asks, not sounding
convinced. "Wouldn't she have run away if she was trying to hurt
me?"

There it was. That childish voice again. Agilene turned to find
it, and noticed a young burgundy unicorn staring at her angrily.
From what the filly said about arresting her, Agilene figured
this must be some sort of game where she would be a cop, and she
is the criminal. She wanted to giggle, an feeling she never
really had for quite a while. But instead, she kept a straight
face and decided to play along. A little fun wouldn't hurt.
Though, she'll admit, her diving for the flashlight did seem
like an attack. The young filly did have a reason to go after
her.
She bent down to the filly's level, and replies in a mellow
voice, "Yes, officer, I will resist arrest." She took a few
steps back, "You will never catch me alive."

The unicorn on the bench asking if she was sure the pegasus had
done it on purpose earned an incredulous look from Nightingale.
"No, of course she wouldn't have run away!" she responded to the
pegasus, huffing slightly. "You know the saying, 'criminals
always return to the scene of the crime'. This is no
different--she just wanted to make sure she succeeded." Her gaze
then moved to the pegasus when she spoke, offering confirmation
that she'd resist. "Aha!" Nightingale exclaimed, looking over to
the pegasus as she took a couple steps forward to keep some of
the distance Agilene was trying to make. "See? Guilty! Get ready
for a stun missile, criminal!" she said to Agilene, followed
moments later by a magic missile firing from her horn to her
direction. The missile was, of course, entirely harmless, as it
would dissipate upon contacting anything.

Lamplight remains unconvinced by Nightingale's explanation, the
mare fairly sure that's just a myth. It would just be stupid to
go back wouldn't it? But now the pegasus was acting like she
actually had done it on purpose. At this point Lamplight is just
completely confused about what's going on. The filly yelling
about a stun missile and then firing a blast of magic out of her
horn doesn't help any, and all the innkeeper can do is stand
there and try to figure out what's going on.
