Re: 0, The Fool
By: Ruby Fortuna Date: September 16, 2014, 6:06 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Delighted that the illusion around her beloved python was
finally cut, Ruby smiled as she could once again admire the
reptile's unique scale colour, happy that it no longer looked
like a balloon animal. She let the snake remain coiled around
her leg, going back to shuffling the cards once more as she
closed the book she had opened, no longer having need of its
knowledge for now. As she shuffled her cards, she watched
quietly as the two young fillies bantered with each other for a
little bit, not batting an eye when Carri came to take the one
bit back. She wasn't sure what Brash would have needed with
Nightingale's services, especially involving the automaton that
Carri excitedly piped up to add. Kids these days, Ruby thought
to herself, first they are at each other's necks insulting and
making petty demands of each other, next they are trying to
'ally to one another's cause'.
It was probably some sort of game when all was said and done.
Ruby wasn't a kid anymore, and no longer in on what was the cool
thing to be doing, not that she knew what it was to begin with.
She ended up only half listening to the conversation, and was
brought back when Nightingale approached Ruby, producing a bit
for her and asking for a reading. Ruby smirked as she levitated
the bit for herself, tapping it on the edge of the table
discretely to make sure it was real before putting it in her bit
purse. "That's quite the foresight that you have, thinking of
things like that at your age," Ruby commented as she started to
rapidly shuffle the cards, "What is it that you figured you
wanted to be when you grew up?"
As Nightingale answered, Ruby placed down the three cards in
front of her; the first card showing a heart with three swords
stabbed through it; the second card showing a stallion sitting
upon a throne, holding a circular object with what looked like a
pentacle inscribed on it; and the third card showing a pegasus
in flight, the image bordered by a green wreath with the four
elements in each corner of the card. After the answer was given,
Ruby examined the cards, humming in satisfaction as she
discerned their meaning. It was apparently an easy one to read,
since she looked back at Nightingale and tapped the first card.
"In the past, we have the Three of Swords, a card of pure,
piercing sorrow of the mind, and this sorrow must be felt for
closure and relief to come. Since it is in the past though, I
have a feeling that you have already been through this, so you
may not have much to worry." Of the conversation that Ruby
heard, Nightingale mentioned something about the matrons at the
orphanage. If she was really staying there, then this card may
have been very accurate. Ruby didn't mention this conclusion she
drew though, and continued reading as she pointed to the second
card, "In the present, there is the King of Pentacles, or the
Miser. This card represents a very reputable individual, very
well respected in their craft and well-verse in the practical
knowledge needed to gain that respectability. In regards to your
question, it could symbolize a pony that inspires you, an idol,
or possibly a meeting with some such figure. They could possibly
help you towards your future..."
She tapped the final card, "... which is as favorable as can be.
In the future, you have The World. This card represents
fulfillment, accomplishment, success..." she trailed off and
looked at Nightingale with her head canted to the side, a slight
smile on her lips, "I think that is pretty self-explanatory,
hmm?" Ruby picked up the cards and placed them back in the deck,
"I have a feeling that you are going to go far, kid, and you
have a long way to go until you get there." When she was done
shuffling, she leaned back, nodding back toward Brash and asking
Nightingale with a slight hint of sarcasm, "So, are you going to
go play with your new friends now? You two seem to get along
swimmingly."

Nightingale didn't answer Ruby's question right away. She
already knew what she was going to be, but she hoped that her
reading would tell her her success in other walks of
life--friends, health, happiness... She remained hopeful as the
first card was explained, the pink mare saying something about
her having to feel sorrow for closure and relief. With that
bringing her mood down a little bit, she glared slightly at the
cards in front of her as her lips formed a thin line. She
really, really wanted the pony to stop talking about that one
and keep going.
She didn't have to wait much longer, thankfully, as the pony
soon moved on to the present. Something something about
reputation and stuff, though her intrigue piqued ten-fold when
Ruby mentioned it symbolizing a pony that inspired her.
"Trixie!!" Nightingale called out with a very large, childish
grin, her gaze locked onto the card, pleased that it had paid
homage to the best pony ever. Folding her hooves on top of the
table, she sat her chin on top of her hooves and turned her
attention to the next card, grin still plastered onto her face.
It represented accomplishment and success, apparently, which
Nightingale already knew was going to be her future.
After Ruby's question of if she was going to play with her new
friends, a slightly sour look crossed her expression as she
dropped down from the table. "What a waste of a reading! I
already knew I was gonna be the greatest illusionist ever when I
grew up; I wanted to know my success with other things. Beh,"
she said bitterly, doing an about-face and walking back over to
Brash and Carri. "Alright, so lead the way. On the way, let's
talk about bits. How much am I getting for doing what?"

Brash begins posing dramatically as Ruby talks about the second
card, until she hears about Trixie. "Pfft, whatever." She
mutters to herself, having not even heard of Trixie. Brash
perceived the reading in a different light, considering
Nightingale's past to be the time prior to their meeting, a very
sorrowful existence. However, now with Brash's help and the
future of the automaton nearly secure, Nightingale is bound for
success.
"You go on ahead." Brash says to Carri. "Get any chores done and
guard the house."
Carri breaks away from listening intently to the fortune and
gives a quick salute, "Got it!" She takes to the air and heads
home.
Waiting for Nightingale to walk beside her, Brash begins
explaining, "You're looking at fifty bits for an hour of gem
sorting, which will consist of me checking their reactions to
your illusions. Then you can look forward to an hourly job if
you can make an illusion of a full grown mare over a moving
metal body. Of course, that'll come later after I've fully
constructed the automaton."

Fifty bits for an hour of gem sorting? Whatever that consisted
of... That didn't sound too bad, she supposed. Was easy bits, at
least. And then an hourly job of persistently making an illusion
of a mare? Ehhhhh, that sounded a lot less appealing, and a lot
more boring. That's not what she wanted to spend all her time
doing... Wearing a slightly scrunched face, Nightingale thought
for a moment longer before speaking. "Well, we'll see if I feel
like doing that last one. Sounds really boring, though. I mean,
a mare moving over a metal body? That's hardly a challenge at
all. But the gem sorting thing sounds good. I'm curious about
that one. What's this automatomaton thingy anyway? What made ya
look into making it? Is that pegasus your big sister? And what's
your names? Oh wait, you're Brash, I think your sister said, but
I don't think her name's been said..."

Brash remains collected amongst the flurry of questions, Carri
asked even more questions upon meeting Brash. "Carri Air, is an
employee of mine, she helps moving heavy loads of metal and the
sort, she also excels at making rudimentary observations about
my project." Brash takes a long breath, "The automaton, my
father's life work which caused him to succumb to illness due to
his obsession. However, I aspire to complete it, using my
father's designs and research... As well as my own personal
skill of course."
"Anyway, gem sorting should be easy so long as my father's
collection has what I need."

So not Brash's sister but her employee. That usually meant
somepony working underneath another pony, right? That thought
made Nightingale look Brash over once more, a skeptical look on
her face. Didn't seem like 'boss' material. Even though she was
bossy. Nightingale had the feeling she'd wind up disregarding
some of the things she was told to do, though... She'd cross
that bridge when she came to it, she guessed. It was also
surprising to her to hear that Brash's dad had died, and that
she was continuing his work. Bigger pony's work usually meant
confusing, boring stuff. So she had no idea what she was getting
into, here. Might be that she turned away from whatever this
project was.
"I don't have any parents, either," Nightingale responded when
Brash finished. "I mean, I kinda already suggested that when I
said I live at the orphanage... But mom used to be a chimera
tamer, and dad was a pirate." Despite the ridiculousness of
those two claims, the way she said them and the straight face
she held perhaps hinted at snippets of the truth. Or maybe not.
It seemed at the current point in time there was no telling.
"They got lost at sea. Both of them. Anyway, let's hurry up. I
wanna get this... 'gem sorting' over with."

"Well so do I." Brash says as she picks up the pace.
Arriving at her now glamorous house, she grumbles and slams the
door open. "Just wait in here and I'll be back." She gestures to
the rather empty living room which only contains a plain white
couch.
Advancing to the corner of the house she opens up a hatch in the
floor and disappears down it. After a minute a large sack full
of transparent blue gems is propelled out of the hatch and Brash
follows behind it. She drags the heavy sack to the middle of the
living room and spills its contents to the floor. "Now just make
and maintain any simple illusion. If my father's notes are
correct I should be able to see through them with some of
these."

Upon finally arriving Brash's house, Nightingale's mouth curved
into a tiny "o" as she stared up at its splendor, completely
caught off guard by how awesome it was. It seemed now she would
definitely need to make use of this awesome house later on,
rather than the stuffy, boring old orphanage where the matrons
bossed everypony around all day. Yet, she was only surprised
once again when she entered and saw that it was a lot more
barebones on the inside than it was out. This baffled her. Why
was it so empty in here...? A look of bewilderment stayed on
Nightingale's face all the way to the couch that Brash led her
to, where she climbed on top of it and settled in. She had a
feeling this was going to be boring.
But... The thought of her illusions able to be seen through with
just one simple gem upset her. The entire meaning of her
existence was going to be made null and void just because of
some stupid gem. Grumping a little bit, Nightingale reluctantly
complied and created a simple red balloon floating in the middle
of the room to begin with. However, after some time passed and
her boredom grew, the balloon began spinning. At the same time,
rainbow-colored lights shot out of the balloon and coated the
wall, creating a dazzling display of spinning lights all around
the walls of the room they were in. Eventually, she got bored of
that too, and while maintaining both illusions, she asked a
question. "So what's up with your house, anyway? Why's it so
empty? I thought you were supposed to be rich?"

As the balloon appears Brash promptly begins looking through the
gems and sorting them into groups with no real expression on
whether she was getting proper results. As the light came from
the balloon Brash would occasionally put a gem into it, some
would glow brilliantly and others would simply block the light
from advancing, she further sorted the gems on these reactions.
"I don't spend my money on unnecessary items, I have food,
water, metal, and tools. There's no use in fancy pictures on the
walls or silver dining sets, the state of my abode is only as
such on the outside to protect what's on the inside. So long as
nopony thinks my house should be condemned then that's all I
care."
Brash paused and looked over to Nightingale before continuing
her sorting. "Of course, should any under my employ wish for me
to add some things, I have the bits to spare."

"Well, if you want it to not look abandoned," Nightingale
immediately responded after Brash mentioned having the bits to
spare for refurbishing the house. "You don't want it looking
like this. Seriously, it looks like nopony lives here right now,
even though it's all clean and fancy. Ponies don't live with
nothing--they live with, ya know, things. This place could
definitely do with a rug or two, and some things to take up
space on the walls... Maybe some vases and flowers too. You
could have a pretty cool place if you took a little pride in it.
Hey, so what about your mom? You didn't mention anything about
her, how come she's not here?"
