Re: 0, The Fool
By: Brash and Carri Date: September 11, 2014, 3:21 am

Brash looks to Carri as Ruby speaks about her.
Carri cowers, with her wings covered up she can't tell that the
illusion has faded. She shivers in place on the verge of tears,
unable to prepare for the coming cotton-ball apocalypse that she
believes awaits her.
The fool card seemed perfect, Brash finds no way Carri could
avoid doing something stupid. Thankfully, Brash gets an idea,
"Carri, you have a coltfriend?"
Carri looks up and shakes her head, holding back tears.
"Well then you're fine, just keep it that way." Brash states,
believing that whatever the death card entails won't happen if
Carri avoids anything to do with fertility.
"Bwah?" Confused, Carri lifts her wings out of the dirt to find
that they're cured. With a smile she says, "You're right!" Then
she gets a confused look, "That's an odd cure." Carri walks back
over to the table and picks up her saddlebags. Her eyes stray to
Brash and she does a double-take, "Brash, your ears!"
"I noticed." Brash says before hopping onto Carri's back. Having
lost interest in the horns since they did her no good. Looking
back to Ruby, "Thank you for your services."

With great anticipation, Nightingale watched Ruby like a cat
locked onto its prey, waiting for the moment when the mare
started to draw the cards. When that time came, Nightingale
closed her eyes tightly so she could better recall the image of
the cards to recreate them as purely as she could. Upon doing
so, she opened her eyes again to wait for the next card, then
repeated the process as necessary when needed. Once that was
done and all three cards had been changed, Nightingale's
anxiousness to hear what the cards meant continued to expand
until she could barely sit still any longer.
What the reading her prank brought about, though, sobered
Nightingale up to the point where she was now feeling guilty for
having changed the outcome. Being as curious as she was she'd,
of course, asked around to find out about the birds and the
bees--even if after finding out about it it made her go
'blech'--and as such, she knew exactly what it meant when Ruby
talked about 'fertility'. She meant babies. To think that her
prank might cause somepony to fear being a mother made her
second-guess herself, and decide that maybe she needed to stop
the charades and fill everypony in.
To her slight dismay, however, the earth pony and the pegasus
tried to leave just moments after the reading was over, causing
Nightingale to cut the illusion of the crate with a, "Hey,
wait!" towards Brash and Carri before starting to move towards
them. She was slow at first as she passed Ruby, her gaze rising
up to the mare and meeting Ruby's, before returning to Brash and
Carri as she passed the mare, her gait picking up to a trot.
"The reading wasn't accurate, I rigged it. So, um... she's not
gonna have baby problems, and I'm sorry for any worries I
might've caused. I also made the horns on your head," she said,
gesturing with her head to Brash before looking to Carri, "And
turned your wings into cotton balls. So... Yeah..."

Ruby took the bit that was offered to her for the reading,
sweeping it into an open bit purse as the two younger ponies
turned to walk away, the pegasus seeming to have dealt with her
little cotton-wing issue. At least that was one less trouble
that the pegasus was going to have. After seeing them turn to
go, Ruby went to collect the three cards to reshuffle back into
her deck. So strange how a simple deck of cards could turn ones
day into something else, and possibly affect their life. When
the deck reshuffling was done, Ruby set the cards back in their
box and turned to look back at the balloon animal snake that had
managed to replace her old python, gingerly picking it back up
to get a closer look at it. It was so off-putting, looking at
the shiny pink latex that moved around her leg as though it were
alive, flicking out its little party favor tongue to smell the
air. It still felt scaly though, and she could still feel the
snake's muscles keep their grip on her arm. What on earth was
this?
She then suddenly heard a young filly behind her calling out to
the two leaving ponies, much to Ruby's surprise. Where did she
come from? Wasn't there supposed to be a box right behind her?
Taking a quick glance behind her, Ruby could indeed see that the
box had disappeared, sending her into a renewed bout of
confusion and asking herself what in the world was going on. The
next thing that the new filly said was enough to make Ruby's
brow furrow in confusion. How could the reading be rigged? Only
Ruby had a chance to see the cards, and know what they were, and
they were in her possession the entire time, except when she
dropped them. That wasn't all that the young filly did either,
she had made the horns on the demon child's head, and the
cotton-wing issues for the pegasus. This all sounded incredibly
unlikely, but this kid seemed to know what she was talking
about, so there must have been some explanation.
"So you are saying..." Ruby began, holding the balloon-snake
out, "that you managed to create a false reading, somehow, and
give these ponies all their strange defects? Are you by any
chance also responsible for turning my snake into this... thing?
How?" She harrumphed to herself, wondering how she could have
missed such a thing, or be fooled by a filly, but worse still,
since her tarot card reading was not accurate, it meant that if
Brash and Carri asked for either their money back or for a
second reading, then she would have to comply, since
technically, Ruby did not fulfill her end of the bargain.
Hopefully it wouldn't come to any of that, and the two would
just walk away, but for now, she wanted to hear this new pony
explain herself.

Brash remains less than interested in the situation as the other
filly appears, whilst Carri gives a big gasp after she
confesses, "Wha- what kinda problems?" She hadn't followed the
conversation since her wings were tampered with.
Brash simply responds with, "Next time, make the horns more
threatening." And then considers the rigged fortune telling,
realizing she got nothing for her bit she continues, "Also, you
owe me three bits." She didn't even care to explain why she
tacked on extra.
Carri remains confused as the what her health situation might be
and awaits an explanation.

After Nightingale's apology, the pink mare behind her spoke up,
causing Nightingale to look back to her over her shoulder. The
mare was asking her questions about her illusions, apparently
doubting that she had, indeed, done all that she'd said she'd
done. "Well, duh," Nightingale scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Of
course I turned your snake into a balloon. And I did it by using
magic. Sheesh, what a stupid question." Shaking her head in
irritation, Nightingale then looked back to Brash when she
spoke. At first, she was taken aback that the apology had been
completely ignored, then insulted that she had dissed her
illusions. The best illusions in all of Equestria.
"Oh, whatever, you couldn't even see what the horns looked
like," Nightingale snapped back to the filly, an idea coming to
mind. "Besides, even if you could see them, your eyes are
probably so bad you'd mistake a dog for your mother! And I owe
you three bits? Since when? And who's gonna make me pay up? You?
Because I've seen squirrels more terrifying than you!" After
speaking, Nightingale turned her nose up in the air to mock how
Brash had done that a few times whiles waiting for her reading,
while at the same time, summoning another illusion. Alongside
the horns, the air above Brash's head began to shimmer, moments
before a jester's hat appeared over the filly's head, the ends
of the hat ending in what looked like miniature clown faces. As
with everything else that had appeared, however, the hat was
intangible and could not be touched.

Ruby didn't say anything as Nightingale snapped back at her,
confirming what Ruby was thinking was going on here. This filly
was an illusionist, and a very good one at that. She had to
admit, they were impressive illusions compared to the little
things that Ruby could pull off, but then again, hers were more
for storytelling purposes than for tricking people, so they
didn't need to be as intensive or detailed. As much as she
didn't want to admit to this obnoxious filly, Ruby could
probably stand to learn a thing or two from her, though the
question of if Ruby could stand any more of the attitude was
still something that would have to be found out. In the
meantime, Ruby had a balloon animal to deal with right now, and
as adorable and friendly it seemed to others at the moment, Ruby
actually liked looking at her python's abnormal colour mutation.
Besides, if she wanted something cute that everypony could enjoy
she would have got something like a... jumping spider, maybe?
She never really considered it too much.
There was a book in here somewhere in this pile, and while the
schoolyard drama between the two young fillies begun, Ruby
searched the titles of the books that she was carrying. Surely
one of the spell books contained an easy dispel spell to cast if
Nightingale never got around to removing the enchantment for
her. Every so often as she flipped the pages, she would listen
back in on the conversation. Where Brash got the two extra bits
to the price, and why she felt that it was in fact Nightingale
who owed the money was some strange thinking, but what followed
was pretty fun. Ruby had to smile at the insults that flew
forth; as much as she didn't like Nightingale's attitude, she
was saying things that Ruby just wouldn't have bothered to say,
and backing it up with yet another funny illusion that made Ruby
giggle.
Jester hats aren't normally so funny, but when they are applied
to somepony who was just a few minutes ago trying to be
terrifying, it was cruelly hilarious. "I think you are looking
for the wrong pony to give you your money back, kid," she said
to Brash, levitating the single bit out from the bitpurse. As
much as she loathe to part with the simple cash, children and
their drama tended to drive away the customers, so the sooner
she could get it out of the way, the better. Placing the single
bit in front of her, she looked back at her books and said,
"Love your new hat by the way, it really puts a smile on my
face."

Brash begins to growl as she's insulted and jumps on Carri's
head to gain height over the other filly. However, she catches
her own tongue before attempting to fire back insults. Fearing
that her impression upon a filly her own age is much more
important than that of her elders, she pauses.
Carri lowers her head due to the discomfort and Brash steps off
onto the ground. Afterwards she takes back the bit for Brash
whilst trying to piece the situation together in her mind.
Brash regains her composure and addresses Nightingale, "I meant
no offense and I'm willing to forgive the dreck you just spewed
should you align yourself to my cause." Brash couldn't deny the
filly was talented, she could only admire the part of the
jester's cap she could see, and the ability to manipulate light
actually had many applications that could assist her project.
"Brash is making an automaton." Carri excitedly chips in.

Offering Nightingale a sense of triumph, the grey pony in front
of her seemed to admit defeat as she dismissed Nightingale's
insults and instead tried to buddy up to her. If she 'aligned
herself with her cause'. With a vague look of disdain,
Nightingale lowered her head once more so she could look Brash
in the eye, a challenging look given to the other filly. At the
same time, she cut all the illusions she had going at that time,
the green aura around her horn finally fading out as she
gathered her thoughts. "See, I don't lose anything by walking
away now; I apologized for rigging the orange one's reading, so
I'm good now. But you get something if I 'join' you, probably to
help you make this... whatever an automoton is.
"So, what do I get if I give you my time and help you, a filly I
don't even know?"

"Bits." Brash states flatly. It actually troubles her that
Nightingale didn't consider that, but then again Brash was never
trying to look like she had bits to spare. "I'll have you know
that I come from a rich family and can pay you accordingly for
your services."
"Also you'll gain free passage through my abode, as well, once
my project is finished you can have it help you with your chores
during its testing phase." Brash thinks to offer more but stops
there in hopes that'd be enough. However, considering that the
help of a light manipulating unicorn is integral to the
completion of her project she stands ready to address any
problems Nightingale might have.

Keeping her look of disdain, Nightingale continued to watch as
she waited for Brash's response, only to blink and raise her
brows slightly when Brash said she came from a rich family that
could pay Nightingale. That sounded nice--and the thing that
came next only help to tempt her. Somewhere else other than the
orphanage to stay might be pretty nice, even if it meant there
not being a high chance of her being adopted... Still, at this
point, she was unsure if adoption was possible for her, not to
mention she had no idea how often she'd be able to go to this
abode Brash mentioned, or whether the matrons would freak out
over Nightingale disappearing.
"I don't think the matrons at the orphanage would be okay with
whatever your project is doing my chores for me... Nice as that
sounds. As for the other stuff... We'll see. I wanna know how
many bits I'll be getting, and I wanna see this house of yours.
And there's another condition: If I don't feel like doing
something, I'm not gonna do it. Anyway, I want a reading while
I'm here," she said, turning quickly and trotting back to Ruby,
producing a bit from... somewhere. "I wanna know how successful
I'll be when I grow older."
