Re: A Warning Like in the Stories

Dark Matter busies himself with inspecting the capes. His white
telekinetic aura flashes occasionally as he pushes aside some or
picks up a corner to see how it hangs. His practiced eye focuses
particularly on the stitching; he knows many capes are cut from
a single piece of cloth, and some don't even require stitching,
though they can also be pieced together from smaller strips that
may be left over from other projects. He definitely approves of
this, as it's less wasteful.
"Your stitchwork is incredible", he says, pushing aside a
conservative floral green piece that almost seems more like it
would be better suited for spring but would probably stand out
as a strong contrast to the changing hues of the coming season.
As he pushes it, the spell he has disguising the nature of his
cloak slowly shifts the trim from the darker green he'd had to
more of a subtle yellow. "I don't often find a seam so fine."
Eventually he comes to the black hooded cloak. His face takes on
a somewhat puzzled expression as he lifts it fully from the rack
to get a better look at it.

"Why thank you darling." She responds to the praise whilst
waiting for him to come to a decision, unfortunately he picks up
the black cloak.
"Oh dear." Rarity had forgotten where she'd put that cloak,
which she made when she thought her career was over. Rarity
quickly thinks of an excuse to get the gloomy article away from
her potential customer, "That, uh, should be on the winter
rack." She pulls it away with her magic and levitates it behind
the curtain.
"If you..." Rarity trails off as she notices the change in
Dark's cloak, "Excuse me if this seems silly but, did you change
into another cloak?"

Dark Matter shrugs as she pulls away the black garment. "It did
seem rather out of place there, I will admit."
He's taken aback when she asks about his cloak. He takes a
glance at it in an attempt to discern what she means, and his
eyes fill with surprise as he discovers his unintended
alteration.
Huh. I guess I was looking at that cape a tad too
closely.
"Um", he says, demonstrating once again his catlike
conversational reflexes, " I don't recall having done so. If I
did, it would likely be one of yours, and I suspect you would
recognize it.
"Anyway", he says in an attempt to change the subject, "while
your summer line is impressive, as you said, the season is
indeed coming to a close. Did you have anything else perhaps on
your autumn or winter racks I could peruse?"

Rarity eyes the cloak, certain it's not one of hers or even the
one he was wearing before, but decides to put the thought aside.
"As I said," She trots behind her curtain, "I do not get started
on cloaks until the season is underway," She wheels out a scarce
Autumn lineup, "Dresses tend to keep me quite busy." There's a
few expressive cloaks with mixes of brown, green, and orange
shades that might be a bit much, and a few of plain autumn
colors. "These are from last year, though I believe they keep up
with current trends well enough."

Dark Matter takes a minute inspecting this new lineup; he seems
to be more interested in the fancier of the plain ones. "That's
alright. I mostly prefer older styles, myself."
He heaves a light sigh. "You know, being here does make me
somewhat nostalgic. I haven't seen anything quite so... lavish
since moving here. It really reminds me of home." The corners of
his mouth curve upwards as he thinks of his sister. She could
hardly wait to get away from Canterlot; she really, truly
disliked anything that fancy.
There's a thought...
He furrows his brow. "Come to think of it, I did see one place
that also did seem similar. A grey filly accosted me on the
street, demanding that I help her find her house, which she
insisted was ripped out by the foundation and replaced. As it
turns out, somepony just came and fixed it up and redecorated
it." He chuckles. "Can you imagine that? Replacing an entire
house?" He continues peering at the cloaks on display, although
it seems halfhearted.

"Well, that does sound familiar." Rarity puts a hoof to her
chest and her eyes stray in recollection, "I helped an orange
filly fix up and redecorate her place just today. 'Twas a
terrible mess, the city was going to demolish it and she had
moved in just recently."
Rarity's eyes widen in realization, "Ah!" She puts her hoof down
and looks back to Dark, "That could very well have been the
friend she spoke of," She gives a small giggle, "Although, I
didn't think she literally wouldn't recognize the place."

Dark Matter's eyes widen in mock surprise. "Really? I suppose in
hindsight I did detect an air of elegance there that couldn't
have come from anypony else in town that I know of. As for the
grey filly..." He shakes his head in dismay. "She may be an
earth pony, but down-to-earth is not something I would use to
describe her. She seemed rather put out, even, that somepony
would do that. I think she even went so far as to swear
revenge."

Rarity took a moment to take that in, "I... what? While I did
put some of my personal touch into it, I think I left it rather
plain enough to not offend anypony's tastes." Baffled by the
thought that somepony might seek revenge for having their home
fixed up, Rarity finds herself at a loss. "I suppose I should
apologize."
Now worried that she's done something wrong, Rarity speaks with
concern, "You wouldn't happen to know where she is? I can't have
her not wanting to stay in her own house."

Dark Matter shakes his head. "I'm afraid not. The last time I
saw her was when I was leaving her house, and that was...
perhaps three hours ago? Four? She could have boarded a train
for Manehattan by now."
He sighs an inward sigh of relief. Rarity has been warned
successfully, and he doesn't appear to have embarrassed himself
by revealing how silly he was that he thought sending a vague,
anonymous note was a good idea.
Now, how to gracefully make his exit?
"Well", he says, giving the sparse rack of capes a quick riff
with his hoof, "I don't have any bits on me, and money is a
little tight these days to be honest, but after seeing your work
I believe I do know exactly where I will be buying my next
cloak." He inclines his head to her. "It was a pleasure meeting
you, Miss Rarity."
He turns to leave.

"Nice to meet you as well," Rarity levitates one of the more
colorful cloaks off the Autumn rack and folds it with her magic,
"And as thanks for coming to tell me about that." Having now put
together that the letter was from Dark, she sets the cloak on
his back.
She waves goodbye, "Do have a nice day."
