Like an Open Book
By: Breezy Adlark Date: July 4, 2014, 7:55 am
---------------------------------------------------------
"If we're going to be living in pony society," her mother had
told her in her usual stern voice. "Then you need to be able to
read their language." Breezy's first response had, of course,
been to ask why her mother couldn't be the one to teach her. Her
mother's response to that was that she barely had time to do
anything since she was working two jobs just to provide for
herself and Breezy. That then left Breezy wondering where to
turn to next. She barely knew anypony in Canterlot--certainly
nopony that she knew could teach her--and even then, she didn't
speak Equestrian well enough to be able to convince anyone to
teach her. The only suggestion her mother had given her was to
go to the library to look for somepony there before leaving
quickly to one of her jobs.
Leaving Breezy with only one goal in mind, she finished up what
little chores she had left to do around their home before
leaving to try and find this establishment of words and
intelligence. Being mostly still brand new to Canterlot and
unfamiliar with its streets and the location of its important
buildings--aside from the location of the castle, perhaps--it
left her with wandering for a while, until she worked up the
courage to ask a few ponies for directions. The first few shied
away from her because of what she was, then others just couldn't
understand her thanks to the improper way she spoke the
language, as well as her accent. The couple of ponies she was
able to glean information from--a second set of ponies needing
to have been asked because of her thinking she took a wrong turn
somewhere--eventually helped lead her to the building she needed
to be at: a vastly larger building than the others it sat
beside, with the easily decipherable symbol of a book
symbolizing that it was, indeed, the library.
Thankful, and somewhat relieved she had finally reached her
destination, Breezy meekly entered the library with her tail
pressed against her body and her head hung a little bit,
severely wary of any looks that might have been tossed her way
as result of being so incredibly out of place. Her first thought
upon entering was that perhaps she could talk to some of the
ponies who ran the library... but when she noticed that the
ponies behind the front desk were already busy with some other
ponies, she decided that she'd wait a little bit, and took the
opportunity to just wander a little bit.
To the surprise of the gryphon who'd never stepped claw inside a
library before, the whole place had a charm to it that she'd
never experienced before. It was, first and foremost, incredibly
quiet. There was a hushed calm about the atmosphere that made it
increasingly easy to relax in. Then, there was something about
the way it smelled that was incredibly appealing to her, for a
reason she couldn't seem to place. It was in this dazed stupor
as she glanced that she accidentally bumped into one of the
smaller shelves sitting in what was considered the 'children's'
area, causing a few of the books to fall before she was able to
catch her mistake and prevent the whole thing from crashing
down.
After glancing sheepishly around to see if her moment of
embarassment had been caught, and that she'd prevented anything
worse from happening, she glanced down to the floor to notice
some of the books that had fallen. Immediately, the bright
colors and easily distinguishable pictures on the pages caught
her attention and her intrigue, causing her to pull one of the
open books towards her as she sunk down to the ground on the
spot, her legs pulled close and her tail curled around her. As
she slowly flipped through the pages of the children's book in
front of her, she gradually began to distance herself from the
world around her as she lost herself in the medium she'd never
really experienced before.

"Are you done yet...?" A green pegasus asked, apparently not
even being noticed by the purple unicorn on the other side of
the table. "... How about now...? ... Now...? ... You could just
borrow that and read it at home... ... How about now...?" The
frustrated rant finally managed to get Arcane to lift his head
up and to look at his brother "I didn't ask you to come here
Sky..." He turned the page and returned his attention to the
book.
"I had to. You always lend so many books and somepony needs to
carry them home..." Sky Bound pulled one of the books Arcane had
pulled from the self earlier and opened it. He skimmed through
it and found a new topic for complaining "There isn't even any
pictures here... Only text... Boring walls of text... What is
this even about...?" Sky turned the book over to read it's
title. "The Artifacts of Crystal Empire, written by... Naah who
cares..."
"I do..." Arcane said without looking up. Once he got to the end
of the page, Arcane set a bookmark there and levitated the book
into Sky's saddleback. "There is pictures there too, but i'm
assuming you would like there to be a picture on every page,
that takes about two thirds of each page?"
"W-well... Not necessarily every page..."
Arcane noticed a griffon walking to the library. That reminded
him that he still needed to fetch a book about rumored griffon
cult that existed long ago. Keeping this in mind Arcane started
to stuff the rather big pile of books into Sky's saddlebags,
before hearing some books falling. Most likely novellas or
children's books, considering the noise they made that was
barely audible. Sky was still occupied with the book he began to
"study" earlier and missed this little incident.
Arcane looked at the direction where he spotted the griffon
before, and saw her holding on to a shelf, rescuing it from
slamming down on the floor. She seemingly got interested in the
fallen books, sat down on the floor and started to read one.
Even if they we're children's books, Arcane had respect towards
them and didn't want to see books being "mistreated". Though he
also new that griffons had somewhat different culture and way of
doing things, and this being the first time he saw a live
griffon reading, Arcane decided to go ask her if she was okay.
But not before grabbing few books from around Breezy with his
magic and floating them over to the table he occupied with his
brother. "Here, these have more pictures." Arcane jumped down
from his chair as Sky looked at the new books. "Pop-up book...
Learn to know all the farm animals... Really brother...?" But
Arcane had already left. Seeing him going to talk to a griffon
nearby, Sky shrugged and actually started to read the pop-up
book, seeing it much more interesting than some boring history
book.
"Are you alright?" Arcane asked once he reached the griffon.

The colors and the images on the pages were fascinating to
Breezy. She'd seen pictures before, of course, as well as
portraits... But rarely had she seen a story portrayed through
pictures. She was mostly able to understand what was going on by
seeing what was depicted, even if the words still looked like
gibberish to her. So lost in her world was she, though, that she
didn't notice that some of the other books that had fallen down
began to float away from her. She did hear him speak to her
however, and quickly turned her feathery head up to the
unfamiliar pony as her previously puffed out feathers flattened
back against her head. She smiled meekly at his question and
nodded slightly, one of her claws idly fidgeting with the corner
of a page. "Yes, I am alright. Sank you for concernink," she
responded in halting and broken Equestrian, as well as a strange
accent, signaling she was most likely new to the language. "I
vas not lookink to vhere I vas goink. I hev not been to library
before; is a very vonderful place. Full of mystery, and very
good smell. Vould be makink for good candle. Name is Breezy
Adlark; vhat is yours?"

Arcane raised his eyebrow once he heard the rather interesting
take on Equestrian language. Thankfully it was still easily
understandable, at least for him. Arcane gave Breezy a nod when
thanked and began to scan the books laying around the floor.
After a while he looked back at Breez and returned the smile.
"Library is indeed a wonderful place. I do tend to visit here
quite regularly." Arcane chuckled lightly at the smell comment.
"I don't know about those candles, but the smell is quite nice,
enjoyable. At least to some..." Arcane threw a quick look and
smirked when he saw what book Sky was reading, currently being
on a page about pigs and there was a pop-up image of three pigs
there. "Arcane Solace. Nice to meet you miss Breezy" Arcane said
when Breez introduced herself.
"What are you reading." Arcane said while positioning himself so
that the book wasn't upside down for him.

The meek smile on Breezy's face grew slightly and took on a
slightly more confident attribute when the pony in front of her
agreed with her comment on the library being a wonderful place,
the friendly words helping to ease her into a chat with him.
When he introduced himself soon after, Breezy canted her head to
him in greeting before looking down to the book in front of her
and sliding it a little bit to the side and toward him to give
him a better look at the book, as he so obviously was hoping
for. "I am not readink, friend," Breezy responded after he asked
what she was reading. "I, em... Cannot read. I am not very good
viz zhe Equestrian, yes? I am barely beink able to speak... em,
communicate. Zhis lankuage is very confuse sometimes. Zhe
pictures are nice, sough. Very colorful and easy to be
understandink. Never had anysink like vhen I vas hatchlink." She
paused then, long enough for her to turn her gaze over to Arc.
"So vhat is you are doink in library here, friend? Are you vork
here?"

Once Arcane got a good look at the book, he immediately
recognized it. "Where the Sidewalk Ends. By Shel Silvermane.
Really good book if you ask me." Arcane frowned when he heard
That Breezy couldn't read the book, only enjoy the pictures in
it. Arcane hoped he could somehow take the reading skills away
from Sky and give them to Breezy, who was clearly much more
interested in written literature than Sky. "That's... Shame... I
highly recommend you to learn how to read Equestrian language,
if you wish to get the full experience a library like this can
provide."
When asked if he was working at the library, Arcane shook his
head "Oh, no. I'm here gathering some books for a little
research project i'm currently doing. About archaeology." Though
working there wouldn't be that bad. If he would never become a
teacher, he would probably try to become a librarian instead.

"Vhere Zhe Sidevalk Ends..." Breezy parroted quietly when Arcane
dropped the title of the book. Well, at least now she had
something to call the assortment of drawings, rather than just
'the book'. Maybe if she ever learned to read Equestrian, she'd
come back and take another look at this book... When Arc
responded to her question about whether he worked there, she
gave him a mostly blank look as if she didn't quite understand
what he was talking about. Then, thanks to her meek, awkward
nature, his response was followed by an awkward silence,
possibly from a result of not knowing what to say to this pony
that had approached her.

Arcane smiled after seeing that Breezy didn't seem to quite
follow on what he said before. "I'm currently studying
archeology. Home school. I need to finish an essay, a long
written "report" for my teacher about crystal empire's
archeological importance to our culture. It's a tough topic, but
i find it very interesting."
Wanting to break the silence, Arcane tried to spark some small
talk between them "How long have you been here in Canterlot? If
you're going to stay here, i'd really advice you to learn read
equestrian language" Arcane said, offering another smile to
Breez as he began to float some of the books from the ground
back to their places in the shelves. "It would help you a lot."

Breezy seemed to watch Arcane in some small amount of awe when
he talked about being there in the library to study and write an
essay for archeology. The wide-eyed, intrigued look she had
hinted that maybe she'd never heard of or seen anything like
that. Or maybe that her young gryphon mind was simply
romanticizing the idea. When he then mentioned that she should
really learn Equestrian, she seemed to deflate a little bit,
gaze falling to the book again. "I vould not be mindink zhat,
friend. Zhat is... Actually vhy I hev comink to library, to see
if I could learn anyvhere. Zhe ponies who vork here vere busy
vhen I valked in, however. As for how lonk I hev been here...
Em, half a year? I am sinkink zhat is right." She shrugged then,
closing the book before crossing her talons over it as she
stared at Arc in intrigue. "Tell me more about zhis
'archeology'? I am... avare of basic idea, but vhat is you do?
Do you explore ruins? Have you been anyvhere excitink? Hev you
any stories?"

Kit had never been to Canterlot, Manehatten, sure, and now she
lived in Ponyville just to the south, but hearing Ryo talk about
it had sent the gryphon on a short vacation while they got
everything for the shop situated and ready to go. Wings fluffed
up lightly, she entered the library curiously, head bobbing
about slowly as she did.
Her head perked up as she heard the tones of a Gryphon with an
accent that was familiar to her, having spoke with it for so
long...and another Pony, There were lots and lots of ponies in
canterlot, though most of the seemed highborn and willing to
look down at a gryphon on a vacation. She began to hunt for the
two that were speaking, letting out small chirps of curiosity.
