It's time to leave
By: Ryo Date: May 30, 2014, 12:29 pm

Ryo walked towards the Canterlot cemetery with Mana. She floated
the flower garland she had bought next to her, careful not to
trash it against anything on the way. She had remained
relatively quiet during their walk there, only silently humming
every now and then. After a short walk the archway leading to
the cemetery came to view.
"This won't take long..." Ryo said. She entered the cemetery
first and picked a direction she started to walk to, clearly
knowing where she was going.

Mana followed behind, lagging a bit so as to give her a little
more space as he was unsure if she wanted to do this alone and
whether or not he'd be intruding by sticking to close to her
side on such a personal matter.
"Take as long as you... Well, as long as you can," Mana replied,
again being reminded of how this was probably going to be Ryo's
last stop before having to catch a train before it took off
without her, "I'm in no rush." A statement with more than one
meaning.

Ryo gave Mana a nod as reply. As she walked towards a specific
direction, Ryo stopped every now and then to wait for Mana, as
she didn't realize the reason for his intentional slower pace.
After few more minutes of walking Ryo turned right and after few
stones in that row she stopped between two gravestones.
The stone on her left read "Midnight Comet. A Loving Father And
Husband. A Pony With Brilliant Mind."
The stone on her right read "Aegis. A Loving Mother And Wife. A
Pony With Unbreakable Will." There was a halberd with cyan blade
and a shield with picture of blue flame on it, leaning to the
gravestone of Aegis.
Ryo placed the garland between those two stones and sat down,
remaining silent.

Mana watched as Ryo set down garland, him being just able to
make out the words etched into the gravestones from where he was
standing and looking off towards the rest of the graveyard with
a depressed but silent sigh, his eyes flicking between a few
specific spots more than once while his training prevented a
visible sting to twist his features. He wondered when last he'd
visited this plot of land himself, and his best guess failed to
make him feel good. Excuses could be easily made with his line
of work and such, but it was never enough to dismiss the guilt.
After a few more moments of silence, Mana stepped up closer to
Ryo and with a gentle and quiet voice said a single word that
was both an assumption and a question.
"Parents?"

Ryo's ear twitched slightly at Mana's direction when the guard
stepped closer. Ryo remained silent for a while after Mana's
question, but then said "Yeah..." accompanied by confirming nod.
"I-it's been almost ten years now..." Ryo sighed. She opened her
mouth to say something, but instead sighed again and closed it
after that. She usually visited the cemetery alone, and wasn't
used to speak with anypony while she was there.

Mana looked back to the gravestones after his question and
assumption was answered and confirmed, his eyes scanning the
inscription chiseled into each of the stones. Ten years ago...
Mana was at a bit of a loss here. He still had his parents so he
couldn't really relate to such a loss, especially at such a
young age as Ryo must have been when her parents died, and while
he had gone through loss before he wasn't sure he could really
equate such things. So, being unsure how to proceed, Mana
decided he'd try and take a chance. Stepping closer, Mana
stopped beside Ryo and sat down, prepared to move at a moments
notice should this prove to make the mare uncomfortable.
"... Would you like to tell me about them?" he asked, quite
ready to accept a negative answer again should this cross some
line he wasnt aware of, "I would listen if you did."

Ryo wasn't exactly sure what she should, or could tell Mana. She
concluded that a picture would be a good start. Ryo turned to
her right and opened her saddlebag, floating a slightly worn out
picture from there shortly after, and floated it for Mana to
see. In the picture there was three ponies, two adults and one
filly. The filly was easy enough to recognize who she was. On
her right stood white mare with grey and blue, kinda messy
looking mane and tail, while they looked clean, the mare had
clearly not paid any attention on styling them. The dark blue
stallion on the filly's left side in the other hand, had his red
mane well styled, and his red tail matched his mane's style.
"That's us on my eight birthday... My mom's on the right and my
father on the left..." For Ryo it felt kinda silly to point out
who was who, the picture only having the three of them in it,
but she felt like it was polite to "introduce" everyone. "... My
mom managed to get that day off from the royal guard... And my
father was on vacation, so we managed to... Go to visit a
travelling carnival for my birthday..."
Ryo offered the photo to Mana, in case the guard wanted to get
better look at it "Like i mentioned before... My mom was a Royal
Guard... She was constantly travelling because of it, but i
don't know too much about that... Everything was always
classified, or secret... My father was a medical researcher in
Canterlot's medical research center... I... Can't really say
anything about that either... I was too young to understand any
of the stuff he spoke of at home..." Ryo kept a pause there, as
if to see if Mana was still interested to hear more. She avoided
eye contact with the guard, the conversation about her parents
having brought tears to her eyes. Even though she tried to hide
it, Mana had most likely noticed the occasional sobs while she
was talking.

Mana accepted the photo and examined it as Ryo spoke, his eyes
moving between the smiling ponies as he listened to the mare.
Here was where he became even more nervous about the situation,
Mana being very confident when it came to how good of a listener
he was, but less so when it came to comforting others in such
personal matters. Don't get him wrong, he had had plenty of
experience dealing with emotional ponies in the past while on
the job, the cause of the ponies distress ranging a vast number
of reasons, but this was different as this wasn't him working
and just trying to calm down somepony he was trying to help.
He... really wasn't sure how to handle this, especially when he
noticed Ryo's tears, and it was making him worried that he might
make this worse for her...
"... Do you remember your eighth birthday at all?" he asked,
hoping to get the mare to focus on what he also hoped was a
happier memory, "What did the three of you do at this carnival?"
He glanced over at the name of her mother etched into her
gravestone, trying to see if her name rang any bells since she
had been a Royal Guard as well, but failed to recognize her
according to his knowledge.

"Y-yeah... I do." Ryo said, her mood brightening a bit. "We...
We got there in the morning, when there wasn't too much crowd
yet. Me and my mom tried out different rides there, my father
passed. He kept saying that his image might be ruined if he's
seen in one. That was *giggle* That was until mom dared him to
try the newest ride there with her. It was called "Deathly
Depths"... Or something similar..." Ryo turned to look at Mana,
her eyes still teared up, but she had a genuine smile on her
face.
"My father could barely walk after that... I had to wait
outside, because i was still too small to go to that ride..."
Occasional sobs interrupted her sentences, but it was still
clear and easy to understand her. "He had to take a "timeout"...
Which back then meant that somepony wanted to be alone, but i
knew that he went to throw up..." Ryo looked back at the
picture, before pointing to it with her hoof. "That stand was
cheating it's customers... When i tried to hit the target with a
dart, it always flew in completely strange directions... My mom
destroyed that stand when she said that she wanted to try after
i had failed for Celestia knows how many times... She hit every
single target, causing them to catch in blue fire afterwards...
I don't have the plushie we won from there anymore though..."
Ryo shifted the spot she was pointing to slightly "You can still
see some smoke there... This picture was taken shortly after
that... When my father returned from his "timeout"... We played
many games there and even went to a fortune teller..."
Ryo kept a small pause, before continuing "The fortune teller
told me that i would face a great tragedy in the future... My
mom and dad said that it's what all the fortune tellers say to
the ponies they read futures for... But i guess... That it was
kinda spot on for me..." She sighed, looking away from Mana
again. "After that we... Dad had reserved a table in some
beautiful restaurant and we ate there... There was a huge cake
there, even though there was only three of us, but i remember
the cake being distributed to other ponies eating there... After
that we went to a theater, to watch some play... But i passed
out long before the play was over and slept all the way over to
the next day... I remember that day well... *chuckle*..."

Keeping up a gentle smile, chuckling a few times here and there
during the more humorous moments of the story and trying not to
let himself tear up whenever he saw how watery Ryo's own eyes
were - his training coming in rather useful there - Mana
listened intently as Ryo explained the events that took place on
her eighth birthday.
"Heh. Rides, burning down a rigged carnie game, going out to a
nice dinner and topping it all off with cake, of course," Mana
summed up with an amused whistle while leaving out the fortune
teller part, "Normally my birthday's were real simple affairs
with some family coming to visit us at our house, but you guys
sound like you sure partied!
"... Then again maybe we just weren't party people," the guard
went on to admit, him figuring that his lifestyle - ripe with
books - would just be considered boring by most. At least when
he wasn't at work. "Anyway, its a shame you don't still have
that plushie."
Mana then lowered his head slightly to be more at the mare's
level and lightly brushed his shoulder against hers, "Are you
okay?" he asked, curious to see if the happier memory had indeed
helped her feel better despite the sobs.
