Re: A Good Day For Combat
By: Shadowed Mesa Date: May 24, 2014, 12:13 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Mesa was carefully going over the bowstring on her crossbow when
she happened to glance up, just in time to see a white unicorn
stallion giving her an amicable nod. Mesa stared back at him,
resisting the temptation to look behind her to see if he was
greeting somepony else. If I'm going to start getting less
nervous around so many ponies, I need to at least seem sociable,
she thought, then returned her bow to her side. She saw a grey
mare near the stallion throw her a decidedly cold look, but
Mesa's only reaction was to twitch her ear slightly. Though I
imagine a combat tournament isn't the best place to stay on
friendly terms with others. But no matter, meeting the
competition is at least a good way to pass the time.
Concealing her hesitation, she slowly made her way over to the
unicorn and two other nearby ponies. She came into earshot just
as Honey was finishing with her scornful review, but if the
brown pegasus heard it, she gave no sign. She gave all three
ponies a friendly smile as she reached them. Competition or not,
Mesa was determined to at least make an acquaintance or two
before the preliminary rounds began. "Hello," she greeted. "Are
you all competing as well?"

Kite gives a short laugh at the white unicorn's story, his own
eyes moving to the crowd for a moment, wondering if that
stallion was here. That sort rarely ever lived up to their own
hype, and it could be both amusing and satisfying to see them
brought down a peg. His attention turns back to Sero when the
unicorn begins talking again. He raises an eyebrow, surprised
there even are "back stage passes" to an event like this.
Studying the fighting up close seems like a plausible enough
explanation, though he has no idea how you'd go about arranging
for such a thing. A sentiment apparently shared by Honey Dew,
who asks how he'd gotten it. He glances over at Mesa, eyeing the
other pegasus as she walks over. He did have to agree that being
limited to only one weapon could be a problem. She is a pegasus
though, which meant he wouldn't get the change to divebomb with
the lance. She was sure to be quicker than him too, so even with
just the crossbow he wasn't going to dismiss her out of hoof. At
least she seems friendly enough, coming over just to say hello
and apparently ignoring the grey mare's assessment. "Hello." He
returns her greeting with a smile of his own, though it's not
quite as friendly. "She and I are." He gestures toward Honey.
"But he's just here to watch, apparently got some kind of back
stage pass."

"I wouldnt dismiss her quite so easily," Sero replied to the
mare's immediate assumption that the crossbow carrying pegasus
had little chance of advancment in the tournament, "after all,
one of the most successful competitors around here almost
exclusively uses a bow, and there are crowds of ponies out there
who are confident that he'll do just fine."
At her question as to how he managed to be allowed to be
'back-stage', Sero smiled. "Some friends of mine did me a favor.
Also, my sister volunteered to be a medic for the event, so it
wasn't that difficult to to get in." Was the answer given as the
unicorn then redirected his attention to the approaching
pegasus, him picking up after the heavily armored pony answered
her question with, "Yeah, I'm just sort of a spectator with 'the
best seats in the house'. The name is Sero by the way," he said,
introducing himself to the three ponies with a small nod of his
head, "Sero Heretici."

Striker felt much more relieved after meeting with the rest of
the special effects crew. They seemed like a competent group of
ponies, and were familiar with the fireworks and other equipment
being used, so Striker didn't expect too many problems. Still,
he felt the restless sense of nervousness that accompanies
waiting to do something for the first time. While all the other
members of the crew look relaxed, even bored, about another day
of their job, Striker was practically prancing in place to try
and distract himself. Realizing that he would drive himself
crazy just standing around waiting for the show, Striker decided
to find something else to do. He could probably chat with
somepony or watch a few of the preliminary matches before he was
actually needed. After making one last check that the storage
room was safely organized, he walked out to join the shifting
crowd gathered at the arena.
He spotted a group of four ponies, two unicorns and two pegasi,
in a waiting area for the combatants. Three had weapons with
them, but the fourth appeared to only have a book. "Hi, I'm
Striker," he introduced himself as he approached. "How are you
all liking the tourney so far?"

"Competing is one word for it," Honey said plainly when Mesa
approached them, asking about their status in the tournament.
Then, staying true to her typical nature of a mare of few words,
Honey glanced over to Sero when he introduced himself, and
responded with, "Samareai Honey Dew", before finally turning her
attention to Striker when he approached as well, sizing him up
for a moment. "Not much of a tournament so far, considering no
fights have happened," she finished before resigning herself to
doing little else besides fanning herself, the growing crowd
beginning to make her a little bit anxious.

Mesa raised one eyebrow curiously at Sero's mention of having
the best seats. She had to admit that being able to watch the
fights up close would be interesting, if a pony didn't want to
compete. She returned Sero's nod as he introduced himself, and
then glanced over as Honey Dew gave her name. "Nice to meet you,
Sero, Honey Dew. I'm Shadowed Mesa." Her ears swiveled as she
heard another pony approaching, and she looked over to see a
yellow unicorn with a fiery mane and tail coming over. Mesa
noticed that, like Sero, the pony didn't seem to be armed. Maybe
he has a "backstage pass", too?
She repeated her friendly smile as the unicorn came over and
introduced himself. She listened to Honey's answer before
chipping in. "Hi, Striker, nice to meet you." She shrugged, then
added, "As she said, not too much has happened so far, but I'm
sure it will be great." She tilted her head as another thought
occurred to her. "Are you one of the ponies organizing it?" This
seemed more likely than being another competitor, with Striker's
weaponless state.

"Kite." The armored pegasus says when introductions are
exchanged, and he nods in greeting to the new pony. "From what
I've heard of it before, it should be a good one though." Kite
says, adding on to what Honey had said. Unarmed as the yellow
pony was, he doubts he was a competitor, and his question sounds
like something one of the organizers would ask. Probably not
somepony with another back stage pass; Kite doubts there are
very many of those, especially given what had to happen for Sero
to get one.

"Striker, Sero," Sero acknowledged and introduced himself to the
newest of the new ponies to join this little group, "and so far
the matches for the tourney have been incredibly tame." He joked
seeing how there hadn't been any yet. The jump to assuming the
stallion was just an organizer for the event, while reasonable,
wasn't one Sero made right away seeing how for all he knew
Striker could be a martial arts master who'd come to show
everypony how its done without any weapons at all. Then again,
maybe Sero just hoped he was some kind of master of unarmed
combat, since he figured that would be pretty cool to see.

"Nice to meet you all. Organizing?" Striker said, scratching the
back of his neck with a hoof. "I suppose you could say I am now,
although I hadn't planned on it. Sorry, I'm rambling. I got
pulled into leading the special effects team just this morning,
so I'll be running some things behind the scenes. Controlled
explosions, mainly." Talking about being in charge made Striker
nervous again, to his irritation. Since when did he have stage
fright? He just needed to take his mind off it for a bit. "True
about the tourney, I suppose it's a silly thing to ask this
early. You said you were a Samareai?" he said, turning to face
Honey. Striker hadn't known that there were any living Samareai,
but he supposed that a famous tourney like this one would
probably attract them.

When Striker turned to her and asked about the way she'd
introduced herself earlier, Honey turned her gaze to him with
the same neutral look from earlier, only to then respond with a
slight nod as she continued to fan herself. "Yes, that is
correct; I am one of the only two Samareai left alive in this
age. I must confess that I am unsure where you were hoping for
me to take this conversation, however, so unless you were hoping
for something specific answered, I am afraid that will be all
from me for now."
