Re: Being Made of Gold Must Be Nice.

Hay looked over at the hoof resting on his shoulder and followed
the leg it was ending in up to the mare it belonged to, the
gesture managing to make him feel less worried about the chances
of being turned away but also causing him to once again use one
of his front hooves to rub at his other foreleg. He watched the
mare as she escaped the covers of the bed and felt a smile pop
back into its proper place on his face when she accepted his
idea of a hug and held her hooves out invitingly. His smile
turned into a happier grin, but when he stood up to better give
the hug he found himself hesitating, one of his front legs
making it off of the ground to join Star only to hang there in
momentary indecision.
This was odd for Haywire as, being as friendly as he was, he
greatly enjoyed both giving and receiving hugs because of how
happy they could make himself and the other pony, but the idea
of hugging Star was a bit... different... He couldn't exactly
put his hoof on why, but it left him with an odd feeling that
left him both very eager to hug her but at the same time have a
harder time in actually going through with it which gave him a
kind of silly sensation that he couldn't put into words. It was
definitely new though, whatever it was...
After a moment or two spent in further hesitation, Haywire
finally managed to go through with it, his other front hoof
reaching up along with his first to accept Star's invitation and
share the embrace. His silly feeling only got stronger during it
causing him to feel even more nervous about it all, but once
actually sharing the hug itself he found it easy to stay there
and his grin became wider and a bit more goofy as he enjoyed
every moment of it, his cheeks feeling warmer as they tinged a
slightly stronger shade of red with each second spent with his
hooves around her. When Star released the hug Hay was a little
reluctant to break it up, but he forced himself to release so as
to not make Star feel uncomfortable, the small green stallion
returning to his sitting position with a soft giggle as his grin
downgraded into a more nervous smile over the experience. He
again used one of his front hooves to rub at his other foreleg
as well as once more was finding it oddly difficult to look Star
in the eyes, only managing to meet hers with his own for brief
moments, but at her question it became even more tricky for the
mare to catch his gaze with her own.
"U-um..." he replied, most likely answering her question with
that alone, "I-I dunno... I-I'm not, o-or... w-w-well, I-I mean,
y-you, e-er... I-I, u-uhm..." his smile was weakening as he
began to look more confused and stuttered more frequently, Hay
beginning to feel a little frustrated over his inability to
properly answer, "... S-sorta..." was all he could go with at
the moment as he felt his ears again start to pin back in worry.

Star watched Hay quietly as she waited for his answer, then
quirked her mouth to the side slightly in thought when he
started stammering and stumbling over his words. So she did...
But why? She wanted to assume that he was just awkward around
mares--but Golden didn't seem to make him nervous at all moments
ago. Star set a hoof on his shoulder again when he finally said
'sorta' and his ears pinned back, hoping to help ease him a
little bit. "I'd hope you know you don't have to be... There's
not a lot that's going to offend me or make me mad, or what have
you. If I don't like something that's done, believe me when I
say I'll tell you. If.. That helps you at all. I hope it does,
because I'd hate for us not to be able to work together because
of this. May I ask why I make you nervous...?"

Star's hoof on his shoulder and her words helped in getting Hay
to stop stressing over if she was upset with him over what had
happened, her promise to be direct and honest in regards to any
issues she may have being appreciated as that meant he wouldn't
need to guess about such things, but his ears remained pinned
back as he again looked at the hoof and then back to her only
this time with his cheeks again reddening.
"U-uh... W-well..." he tried to answer her questioning, again
starting to fumble over his words as he stared back down at his
hooves where one was starting to draw little circles on the
floor, "... I-I dunno really... I don't know how to describe it.
I just... sometimes... W-well, a lot of the time, whenever we're
d-doing something in the workshop t-together o-or... U-uhm...
"I get this kind of... w-well... I just sort of... I start
feeling k-kind of... I don't know what it is. I-I just get
kinda... feel sorta funny... a little... I guess... In a way I
can't remember ever feeling before... I probably just sound
silly..." he finished, lowering his head slightly as he wished
he knew how to better explain what he didn't understand.

Still watching Haywire thoughtfully, she listened with perked
ears as he tried responding once more to her question. He was
having just as much trouble before trying to answer her, it
seemed, so her words from just a moment ago hadn't helped
whatsoever... All she really got from him as a response was that
he got this 'funny feeling' whenever he was around her in
general--or, she presumed, when she brushed up against him which
had alerted her to the problem in the first place. She gently
bit her lip as she thought for a moment, trying to figure out
how best to approach. "Have you ever felt this way around any
other mares, Haywire? And... Is there anything I can do to help
you?"

"No, I don't think so..." Hay answered to her first question,
managing to actually look at her again even if it was causing
his 'funny feeling' to get stronger, "I don't remember having
this happen with other ponies before, and I'm not sure what you
could do... Do you have any ideas whats going on? I just wish I
understood what it was. Wish I could describe it right. It's not
even a really bad feeling either... Its kind of like...
"Its kind of like when I'm working on a new invention," he tried
to explain it in a way where he may have an easier time with the
comparison he knew and loved so well, "something really
interesting and new that I get super excited and happy about,
but... I guess I get kinda nervous too? With my inventions,
though, its usually only when I'm getting ready to show it off
on a stage or something so I don't know how that fits with this
feeling... I'm just kind of feeling a little nervous most times
when I see you, but its all bundled up in that same
excitement..."
"I-is this a bad thing? Or...?" he asked, ears having stayed
pinned through out his dialogue, "sorry... Do you have any ideas
about what we could do? I'm totally lost here..."

A quiet hum escaped Star once Hay responded to her first
question, telling her he hadn't felt this way towards any other
mares... The notion she'd gotten as to why he was feeling like
that was starting to become more and more confirmed with every
word, and it worried her a little bit. Not because she was
inexperienced with things like relationships and crushes, but
because she was worried she'd hurt him, or put him off if she
ever had to turn him down. It was something she'd really have to
give some thought to, and hope that nothing happened between now
and when she had some time to do so.
"Please don't apologize, Haywire. There's nothing wrong, and
it's not a bad thing. It's just... I need a little bit of time
to contemplate this before I can give you a better answer. I'm
sorry if that just makes things a little more confusing, but
please don't think you're doing something you shouldn't be. What
you're feeling is... natural." Feeling a little guilty that she
couldn't word her thoughts any better, Star leaned forward again
and wrapped her hooves around Haywire in another embrace,
squeezing him tightly for another few moments before pulling
away so she could move them on to a different subject.
"While I have your attention... We should really discuss the
machines, and their pranks. I'm not going to suggest they not
ever do it at all, but... Well, let's put it this way: what if,
in my place, an elderly pony had been the one to have been
scared instead? There's a chance that the pony could've had a
heart attack, or worse. Or, what if a pony was putting one of
your inventions through a test run to look into buying it, and
the invention played a prank on the pony, causing them to change
their mind about buying it? You are running a business here
Haywire, and if I'm going to be helping you, I need the
machines' cooperation. Even if they don't like it... You need to
keep your dream of building an airship in sight."

Haywire did indeed feel even more confused at Star's words, but
she at least sounded like she may have a better understanding of
what was going on with him. Her hug managed to make him blush
slightly and smile again, Hay taking comfort in the embrace and
trusting Star to be able to help him figure out this strange
behavior of his, and he showed off his smile to the mare once
the hug was broken to show he would do his best to be patient
while she did her thinking.
When she moved on to the subject of his machines Hay felt his
smile weaken considerably, the inventor realizing he should have
figured the topic would be brought up but not really knowing how
to handle it or what to say. To Haywire the machines and their
pranks were just everyday life around his workshop, and while
they most likely had very well contributed to his lack of
customers that same lack of visitors meant his witnessing of
such jokes played by the machines being extreme or harmful were
very few and far between.
"I-I don't think they would try to actually hurt somepony..." he
answered weakly, "I mean... O-okay, maybe they can get kind of
carried away, but I don't think they would try to scare an
elderly pony. But... I dunno... I don't think one has ever
visited so I can't know for sure.
"They do tend to not work very well when I try to show them off
though," Hay recognized Star having a point there. There had
been countless times where his inventions would decide to just
not operate correctly if he took them outside the workshop and
when strangers were around...
"M-maybe they can cut back a little..." Hay conceded, feeling a
little bad about it as it felt like he'd be telling friends to
stop something they enjoyed and did often. Th thought of his own
airship made him feel... kind of worse but stronger? He couldn't
describe it well. He knew he wanted to have his own airship that
he had designed and built himself, but still this would be a
pretty big change around the workshop if it ever did stick and
Hay doubted he would be very good at keeping the machines in
line.
"I don't really know what to do though. I've never had to tell
anypony what to do all the time, and I don't know if I'd be any
good at it... What if I can't make them start cooperating with
you? Or what if they just ignore us and keep doing it anyway?"

Star did feel rather disappointed to have to have this talk with
Haywire. She knew the inventions meant everything to him, and
looking at it from a different perspective, she knew it was
rather presumptuous of her to just walk in one day and start
demanding everything change. But he was going nowhere as it was,
partially because no one wanted to visit the shop, thanks to the
uneasiness the machines and their pranks caused. She needed to
try and change that for the better if she and Haywire were to
ever get Tech Tock to be the successful business she knew it
could be.
"I don't know what we'd do if they ignore us, or just don't
cooperate... I really don't. I realize I'm the stranger here,
and I'm asking for something... difficult, but please try to
keep in mind that I'm trying to help you turn this place around,
Haywire. Trying to help you turn this place into the wonderful
shop that I know it could be--the wonderful shop that could have
everypony in Canterlot, maybe even Ponyville and some of the
other cities too, buzzing about you. We need to get them to see
that I'm not trying to be the bad guy here. But I don't know
these machines, and they don't know me." She paused for a moment
after that as if struggling to find more words to say before
giving up a couple seconds later with a quiet sigh. "I'm not
sure what else to say, Hay. I wish I had the solution we were
both looking for, but I'm afraid as it stands I can't do a
thing. All I can do is put this demonstration together, and hope
we can turn Tech Tock's reputation around by not making ponies
afraid to even set hoof on the same block."

Hay was silent as Star spoke, it being clear that it would take
more time for him to become comfortable with the idea of keeping
his inventions in line, but no objections being raised was a
sign that he was willing to give it a try. Hay could tell that
Star was speaking with the best future for the workshop in mind,
but Haywire was simply never one to tell anypony, living or
machine, "no" to something they wanted to do or have. Saying
"no" meant denying them of what they wanted, which meant
preventing them from being happy, which Hay never enjoyed the
feeling of even if it was full well in his right to say no over
whatever it was. Asking his inventions to not prank so often,
especially after seeing how hard it had hit Star, made sense to
him, but he still felt bad about it.
"... I guess..." He replied quietly, the mention of his lack of
visitors doing a good job of driving Star's point home but also
causing him to feel more melancholic, "I'm gonna have to think
about some stuff then... Maybe I can try talking to Bubo to let
him know about this in a bit and then see if he has any ideas.
I'm pretty sure he would agree with you pretty quickly though
since he and the rest of the inventions have gotten into a back
and forth sometimes over their fun and he tends to keep an eye
out for their pranks whenever somepony is over. I always kind of
thought it was like a game between them, though..." He let his
eyes flick towards the door of the bedroom then back to Star and
finally the cocoa he'd made.
"But, in the mean time, you're sure you don't need anything
else, right?" asked the small stallion, wanting to try bring the
mood up some as he wore a small smile and wished to be helpful
so as to make both Star and himself feel better, "Are you hungry
at all? Oh! Maybe I can try and see if I have any marshmallows
hidden away someplace for your cocoa? Course, I can just let you
rest too. Either way, just say the word and I'm off!" He took a
step back and away from the bed, eagerly awaiting Star's word
for whatever she would like him to do as he wanted to take a
break from all the stress they'd been dealing with since the
prank. What Hay wanted right now, for a little while at least,
was to wear and see a smile again, and he was ready to dash off
across the city to see Star's wonderful smile again if that's
what it took.

Star nodded silently at Haywire's acknowledgement of her words,
feeling a little heartbroken that she had to be the one to make
him look so miserable. She was glad he seemed to at least be
listening to her words, she just wished that there was some
other way they could go about this. But there wasn't, or at
least nothing else that she could think of, so for now she just
had to put her faith in him. Then, Haywire changed the subject,
asking her if there was anything else he could do for her. It
didn't take much for her to show the smile he wanted to see, as
after he said he was off if she said the word, she offered him a
gentle smile of things as she reached over to the cup of hot
chocolate that was now probably warm enough to sip on without
burning her mouth.
"I'm not hungry, Haywire... Golden paid for a meal for me before
I came here with her, and the chocolate is just fine without
marshmallows. And I won't send you away--if you want to rest a
little bit with me, you can feel free to. Besides, I've seen how
you just fall asleep wherever out there... I can't imagine
that's good for your body at all. You've got a perfectly
comfortable bed, so... I really think you should consider using
it more often. You'll probably wake up feeling more rested, and
without any aches from sleeping the wrong way..." She sighed
after that and shrugged as she resituated herself so she was
sitting upright in bed, resting against the headboard. "But it's
only my suggestion. I can't make you do it, unless I drag you to
bed after you've already fallen asleep. Which I might have to
resort to doing."
Shrugging slightly after that, she took a small sip of the
chocolate as she stretched both of her wings out, the large,
elegant appendages unfurling to their limit. Once a moment of
this had passed, she closed the wing on the side of the bed that
she had been talking to Haywire on while her other wing lay
draped across the bed beside her across the pillows. Enjoying
the silence, she just quietly continued sipping on the
chocolate, though if Haywire took her up on her offer of resting
with her, she'd gladly welcome him.
