Re: Being Made of Gold Must Be Nice.
By: Star Catcher Date: June 29, 2014, 6:43 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When Haywire started to "explain" how the Thought Theater
worked, Star blinked a couple times as her ears fluttered a
little bit, before she finally glanced over to him with a
slightly raised eyebrow. She probably should've known better by
now than to ask him about how things worked, but she still
couldn't help but be a little surprised and confused by his
roundabout way of describing things using silly terms. It almost
made it seem like he just threw random things together in hopes
       of making something work.
Shrugging that off, Star looked back to the invention when Hay
started to explain how to use it, stashing away that knowledge
for later use when she was to use the Theater. She was a little
confused as to how one was supposed to focus on both the image
to be set into the Theater as well as the silver inside of it at
the same time, at least without messing something up, but she
just chalked it up to being something that was a lot easier to
execute than it sounded. The fact that it didn't need to be
maintained all the time was a little surprising, but she
supposed if that's how it worked, then that's how it worked.
As for only one pony being able to use it at a time--thanks to
there only be one tray--she wondered briefly if that was
something he'd think about changing in a future design, if Star
could convince him to put enough time and effort into upgrading
what he already had so it could get TechTock some publicity. She
could definitely see something like this being something the
nobles around Canterlot dumped their money into. Especially if
multiple nobles could interact with one Theater at the same
time. She just hoped she could get Haywire to see it the same
       way.
When Haywire suggested that Golden take the first turn, Star
readily agreed with a warm smile and a nod before settling for
watching whatever it is Golden decided to create inside of the
Theater. The wait was a little bit awkward as, for a while,
nothing happened, as if the mare was having trouble figuring out
what it was she wanted to think about. About the time Star
opened her mouth to make a suggestion, something finally formed
inside the Theater--something that looked like a... foal--before
Golden seemed to jerk her hoof away. Quietly, Star turned a
questioning look between Golden and the Theater, almost as if
expecting some different explanation other than a 'cramp'... But
just had to resign herself to idle wondering when she realized
it was probably something that the mare didn't want to talk
       about, especially with complete strangers.
The scene inside the Theater that followed when Golden returned
her hoof to the tray wasn't quite what she was expecting. She'd
been expecting some kind of full scene or something like
that--but instead they got a tool. A single wrench. She couldn't
help but fend off a feeling of slight disappointment at the
underwhelming display, even if she did understand that Golden
might not have been able to think of something, or was just
uncomfortable overall. "A multi-tool, hmm?" Star asked after
Golden commented on the object. "Hehe, maybe that's something
you could look into making too," she teased as she brushed
against Haywire again, obviously addressing him.
"Let's see what I can do with this thing," she followed up,
gently spinning the Theater back to herself before setting her
hoof on the tray. She then closed her eyes and started to take
deep breaths in concentration, taking roughly a minute or so to
put together what she wanted to see in the Theater. After the
minute was up, she focused on the silver as she was instructed.
Inside the dome, a warm, cozy scene began to piece itself
together: it was some kind of living room, possibly dark if the
various candles and the lit fireplace were any indication. The
perspective seemed to be some kind of first-person view. What
looked to be hair was covering one half of the Theater's view,
and what wasn't covered showed that the pony was likely laying
down against another pony, judging by the hoof in view that
their head was resting on as they stared forward at the dancing
       fire.
When the scene had pieced itself together fully and had begun to
animate, Star opened her eyes again to see what it looked
like... earning a warm smile from her and an almost wistful
expression as she stared at it. "Lack of color aside, that's
pretty faithful to what I thought of... This is every bit as
amazing as I thought it would be--the nobles in this place would
       absolutely adore this thing, Haywire..."

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Hay's eyes continued to flick between the stuff around him.
Star, his Theater, Golden, back to Star. He felt kinda weird
being so close to the mare as for her to be able to brush up
against him as she did, and it left him a touch distracted as
Golden began to use the TT herself, this causing him to not be
fully aware of the forming shape in the dome. He was pulled from
this and had his full attention locked back onto his invention
when his guest pulled her hoof from it, the first thought
shooting through the green inventor's mind was the possibility
of the Theater having somehow hiccuped and possibly
malfunctioned - even though he'd checked it out when he had dug
it up from where it had been stored and everything had appeared
to be fine - the second thought then being that Golden may have
just not been used to the feeling the theater gave on somepony's
hoof when being operated. Her explanation of it just having been
a cramp earned a slight tilt of Hay's head, but was plenty
enough of an excuse for him to accept and was followed up with a
smile of anticipation for her second try, Hay then broadening
his smile at the tool he saw and giving a small clap of his
hooves in approval and joy over Golden's over his invention.
"Actually, I-" Hay had begun to respond to Star's suggestion
when the second she brushed against him sort of killed his
current sentence and caused him to again rub one of his legs
with a hoof a bit and shift his eyes, him finishing his spoken
thought with a rather unfitting, "hehe... yeah..." then watching
Star give the Theater a go.
Her scene was an odd one for Haywire, mostly due to its
perspective. Being in first person instead of more like a
separate viewer watching an event - as he often used the Theater
       - made the hair and hoof appear strange to him and it took him a
few moments to figure out what exactly he was seeing, his neck
bending this way and that as he moved his head around to view
the Theater from every angle. It eventually sort of clicked in
his brain just when he was about ready to perform a head stand
to look at it upside down, and he gave a small "oh" in
realization as he finally figured out that the thing at the top
was supposed to be hair instead of a malfunction of some kind
before he shrugged and gave a smile and clap of his hooves just
       as he had with Golden.
At Star's mentions of the nobles of Canterlot, Hay scratched the
back of his neck and shrugged. "If you say so," he said, not
sounding very convinced as Bubo fluttered down from his perch
and settled down next to the Theater, the perspective of Star's
scene also having appeared odd to him from where he'd been but
becoming much easier for him to understand once closer.
"Nopony seemed all that interested when I tried to tell people
about it back when I first made it, so I'm not so sure... I'm
glad you both like it though! And I hope this was enough to
'pique your interest' like Star hoped, Golden."

Golden was happy that both Star and Hay seemed to buy her rather
poor excuse for stopping and starting over with the TT. Golden
was about to correct to Star's comment about her "creation", to
say that it was supposed to be the tool she carried with her.
But before she could do that, Golden noticed Star giving Hay a
small brush and Hay's reaction to it, and instead only gave them
a small muffled laugh. She then moved her attention back to TT
as Star began to operate it. As the image began to form inside
it, Golden gave Star a small smile, having made her own
speculations about the scene in the orb. She also gave Star a
       small clap as Hay did.
Turning her attention to Hay as he spoke, Golden raised her
eyebrow when Hay said nopony was interested in the TT. "Sounds
like you tried to market your invention to wrong kind of ponies.
       I think it's pretty neat."
Golden approached the suit-chair looking thing and continued.
"It was. I can't really think of anything i need at the moment
though... But i will remember this place, in case i ever need
       anything."
"Got any other great inventions here? I might work with machines
myself, but most of these things are alien to me." Golden said
while curiously poking the metal suit.

Star hummed quietly in thought after Haywire explained that no
one seemed all that interested in it back when he first made it,
a multitude of reasons and solutions coming to mind as she
thought about it. When Golden spoke up in the meantime, she
turned her gaze briefly to the mare and listened to her request
to see more. Knowing Haywire would have been excited to display
more of his pride and joys, Star waited until Haywire
responded--whatever his response may have been--before speaking
herself. "Haywire, about the Theater, what if I handled setting
up a publicity event for it, if you agreed to work on it a bit
more? I promise I could get some attention on it, and that way
we'd both be doing our part to help make Tech Tock a better
shop. I really do think given the right showcasing, this could
open up a lot of doors for you. It would certainly help you on
your way to building an airship."

By: Haywire Date: July 17, 2014, 12:46 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
"Other inventions... hmm..." Hay tried to decide whether or not
he should pick up a nearby piece of scrap and just toss it
somewhere with his eyes closed with the hope that it would hit
something worth talking about since he didn't know where to
start when it came to being asked to produce something
interesting - lack of regular visitors and all that -, but the
nearest thing small enough for him to toss would have to be
either Bubo or the Thought Theater and neither the metal bird
nor the device would probably appreciate the idea.
"UmmmmmmmOh! Maybe you'd like this..." He wondered, turning and
trotting around the table and again behaving as if the metal
suit had no story behind it whatsoever, or at leas not as
interesting of one as what he was looking for now. Reaching
Golden's side of the table while ducking his head slightly with
partially pinned ears and smaller smile as he passed Star, Hay
grinned and motioned with his head to a spot behind her, another
pile of what may have or even still could be gadgets obscuring
the visual of something covered by a sheet, the only route one
could take to reach the indicated mystery being a sort of path
leading around the small mountain of stuff and things and
between other similar piles cluttering up the workshop.
"It's right over here!" said Hay with a wave of his hoof as he
lead the way through the pass that was the only way to reach the
new... it was pretty safe to assume it was a machine of some
kind. "I dunno about this one being impressive or great really,
but I think it's pretty fun! So that should count for something,
right?" the inventor explained as they neared the thing, a
slight chill coming off of the left most and shorter half of the
       whatever it was.
The mystery wasn't mysterious for much longer after they had
reached it though with Haywire gleefully grabbing the sheet
hiding it in his mouth and pulling it away to show what was
underneath. On the left was an odd looking metal egg shaped
thing, if an egg were to be laid on one flat side, that was cold
to the touch and acted as the source of the chill one could
feel. A rectangular control panel set with bulbs, buttons and
the works softly blinked a variety of colors as it sat patiently
waiting to do its part in carrying out its current purpose. Set
directly on the top of the egg was a tube fastened down and
tightly sealed that lead up into an elbow bend that then fed
into the right half of the machine. Taller than its partner and
more rectangle shaped, the right half of the machine was large
enough for the average pony to fit inside of the inward curve in
its front, this being what it was designed for in fact if the
pillow laid out and inviting ponies to take a seat was any
indication. Directly above the cushion was another tube, though
this one was more flexible and ended in what appeared to be a
suction cup. And, finally, to the right of the machine itself
was a small box with two stacks of bowls, one stack having had a
hole cup into their bottoms and the other being a bunch of bowls
with small cushions and straps added onto them. There was also a
       cup full of bendy straws.
"So with this one," Hay began as he moved over to the bowls and
picked up one of each of the bowls, a closer look showing that
the rims of each had also been changed so as to allow them to be
twisted onto each other like a cap on a bottle, "You take one of
each, stick them together like this, then put it on your head
like so," demonstrating, Haywire slipped the strap of the bowl
under his chin and rested the entire thing on his head like an
incredibly inefficient helmet, the cushion that had been added
making it comfortable enough, but not something one would want
to wear all the time obviously.
"After that, you sit down in here," sitting commenced once Hay
backed into the curve of the machine and plopped his rear down
onto the pillow, "press this little button here," a hoof met a
button on Hay's left, "Then press the bowl into the cup and let
the machine do the rest!" the little grin stallion finished
before lifting his head up and pressing the bowl on his head
into the flexible suction cup above him. Seconds later there was
the sound of a vacuum being blocked as the bowl was grabbed onto
by the suction of the aptly named cup it was snuggled up
against, Hay's head then shaking as the machine sprung to life
       and got to work.
The egg bleeped, the receptacle above Hay blooped, and Haywire
himself spoke with a shaky voice as his head continued to
vibrate while his invention did its thing, "You aren't lactose
intolerant are you?" he asked just before a loud buzz sounded
and Hay was released from the machine, his eyes rlling in their
sockets for a moment as he felt dizzy from the event.
Now free from the machine, one could, through the transparency
of the top bowl, see that the container on Hay's head was now
full and an educated guess could easily narrow down as to with
what. Stepping out of the machine, and giving a light shake of
his head to clear his dizziness up, Hay side stepped over to the
box and plucked a straw out from the cup before pushing it
through a small rubber spot on the top bowl, bending it down
towards his mouth and then holding his hooves out in a flourish
and saying, "Tada! Soft served, and it even has different
flavors! You can have some if you want!" he cheered then tried
to grab the straw with his lips, it being stubborn and avoiding
him and causing him to make a small scene as he apparently
forgot about how useful hooves could be and instead tried to
catch the straw using only his mouth and moving his head, the
latter achieving little more than having him eventually
accomplish a small spin in place during the struggle. Once
captured, Hay took a long draw on his soft and sweet frozen
       treat.
"Like I said, this probably isn't amazing or anything, but I
think its fun," he repeated with a satisfied sigh before turning
his attention back to Star and listening to what she had to say
about the Thought Theater, Hay trotting closer to the table so
as to hear her better, bowl still balanced and all.
"Well... I wouldn't mind working on it some more if you wanted
me too, but I'm still not sure how well it would go over. I
certainly wouldn't be of any help when it came to that kind of
thing. Are you sure you'd want to do that?" he asked, still
doubting the chances of his invention reaching anypony, "If so,
well... we could give it a shot? Either way, improving the
Theater has always been on my to-do list, and it would probably
be a bunch of fun, so I'm all for that part at least!" The
mention of an airship perked up Hay's ears and brought a small
smile to his face as he thought about it. He really did want to
build his own... Oh the kinds of stuff he would make for it!
"Okie dokie! If you're sure about this, then I'm game! But...
where do we start with that?"

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Golden began to follow Haywire once the inventor had decided
what he would show them. The metal suit was once again ignored,
and Golden thought that maybe it's simply pile of scrap metal
now, that's either being, or going to be dismantled, or maybe
thrown away. The machines around them had either gone silent, or
they we're "discussing" so quietly, that Golden couldn't hear
them. Their earlier behavior was still bugging her though.
Thankfully the pony who had made them was present. Who knows
       what might have happened otherwise.
Once they arrive to the machine Hay wanted to show them, Golden
sat down as the invention was revealed. The machines design was
strange, weird shapes everywhere and the fact that it seemed
like a pony was supposed to sit under the suction cup, Golden
had no idea what the machine would actually do. Haywire didn't
seem like a pony that would extract brains from other ponies...
As Hay began to explain how the machine works, at first he
managed to make Golden even more confused. That bowl seemed like
it was supposed to hold something in it, but why strap it on
your head...? ANd why- At this point Golden decided to just wait
and see what the machine would ultimately do, instead of
questioning everything on the go. She gave Hay nods, to indicate
that she was listening what the green stallion was telling them.
When Hay sat down inside the machine, and the suction cup
attached to the bowl, Golden ruled out the brain extractor
completely. She got slightly worried about head shaking part,
but Hay had built it, and hopefully knew what he was doing. At
the sudden, and quite random question, Golden first threw a
quick glance to Star, before turning back to Hay and saying
"No..." After the machine was done and Hay was free, the earlier
question made much more sense. The machine seemed to make ice
cream. The way the machine worked took a moment for Golden to
realize that it was probably designed more for earth ponies and
pegasi, having the helmet bowl, thingy to be strapped on top of
pony's head. "I could try some. Been a while since the last time
i ate ice cream." Golden said, wondering if the helmet would fit
her head, being a unicorn and all. The scene Hay made with the
straw made Golden grin. She almost wanted to cheer and give Hay
a clap when he finally managed to catch the pesky straw in his
mouth, But she decided not to.
As Hay and Star continued to discuss about the TT, Golden
thought that they might want to keep their possible business
plans to themselves and she made her way towards the ice cream
machine. She studied the control panel for a moment, before
turning to Hay and asking "How exactly does this work?" She had
already snapped the two pieces of the cup together and was
holding it next to her with her magic, as she waited for further
instructions on how to operate the machine.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Star smiled warmly at Haywire's agreement to continue work on
the Thought Theater, pleased that she'd finally found a way to
really start helping Haywire out. He needed a manager to guide
him towards business success, somepony to keep him focused and
on the right track. Somepony to make sure he wouldn't be taking
nothing but thanks for payment--especially if he wanted to build
that airship he supposedly dreamed about. When he asked if she'd
want to actually do that, she nodded once, giggling quietly
before listening to the rest of what he had to say. When his
final question came and he asked where they'd start, the smile
on her face widened slightly before she sat down, posture
straight, an air of professionalism about her--hinting that
maybe she'd done this kind of thing before. Mare of all trades,
       indeed.
"That's the easy part. When we're done here, I start looking for
popular, open venues willing to host a showing like this.
Museums, perhaps. Art galleries. Theaters. Perhaps even a faire
or festival happening around Canterlot in the near future. Our
best chance will likely be tagging along to some kind of event
already planning this kind of thing. For instance... Did you
ever participate in any science contests in school? Where on the
day of the contest, everypony set up their projects in a large,
open area? It will most likely be something close to that, but
perhaps each thing gets their own personal showing time on some
sort of stage. If I can't find anything like that, it would be
just as easy and productive to start trying to set something
like that up. Go to maybe a library, or a tavern, and post
something about us looking to make this happen and just go from
there--you make it and they will come, after all. Point is...
Just trust me, Hay. I promise I'm not going to let you down. I
live for making other ponies' dreams come true, after all," she
said, offering him a reassuring smile before she glanced over to
Golden at her question. This was followed by her looking back to
Hay, waiting for his response to her.

Hay looked to grow more and more excited over the idea of
showing off his invention as Star explained what she thought
they could do to get it some exposure. She made it sound so
simple and easy! Haywire, however, had his ears droop slightly
and appear less enthused when Star mentioned school science
contests, his eyes briefly wandering away from the mare and
falling onto one of his hooves that was tracing a small circle
       underneath him.
"Er... no. I, uh... No, I didn't..." he said in response, "but I
think I know what you're talking about." not elaborating further
as his attention was pulled towards Golden at the sound of her
question, him taking a small turn to the side to better face the
       mare as he answered.
"Oh, its super duper easy. All you gotta do is strap the bowl
onto your head like you saw me do earlier, though since you're a
unicorn you're going to have to strap it down a little bit
further back so you aren't pressing it against your horn. Then,
just sit down on the pillow, press the 'on' button as I showed
you and press the bowl into the suction cup, though again since
you're a unicorn you'll most likely have to lean your head
forward as you do it so you don't bump against anything, and
then just wait for my machine to finish its work. Oh! And you
can change the flavor by hitting one of the other buttons you'll
find near the on button. Each one should have the first letters
of the flavor's name and a small picture of what it is. For
example, mint chocolate chip is labeled as 'MCC' and has a small
picture of a green scoop with dark brown dots." giving a small
nod and blink of his eyes as he finished his explanation, Hay
then turned back to Star to reply.
"Okay!" he said, head temporarily becoming one that bobbles with
his nods as he showed he did indeed trust Star with this. "But,
I have to warn you, me and presentations have a... silly past.
Usually whenever I try to show things off, I either can't ever
think of a way to explain stuff in a way that anypony else can
understand and end up confusing everypony watching and then try
to make up for it by trying to explain my explanation but that
usually just makes it worse. And then my inventions would also
some times decide to just... not work. So... yeah, I have bad
       luck with stages and presentation..."

"Got it" Golden called back after receiving instructions from
Hay. She unstrapped the holster that held her wrench and took of
her goggles off and levitated them a bit further away from the
machine. She then took the cup she assembled earlier and
strapped it to her head. After scanning through the different
flavors, Golden pushed a button that read "Trio" and had a ball
that had equal amount of red, white and brown in it. She
carefully sat down inside the machine and after attaching the
bowl to the suction cup, she started the machine.
After the machine was done, Golden wobbled out, the shaking
having affected her balance quite a bit. Golden floated a straw
from the cup and placed it to the bowl. Unlike Hay, Golden used
her hoof to help catch the straw and was now enjoying her ice
cream. Golden walked back to the table where TT was sitting and
sat down. She still felt like she shouldn't "eavesdrop" on
Haywire's and Star's talk about their business plans.

Star patiently and quietly waited as Hay explained how to use
the machine to Golden, making a mental note for her to suggest
later that he change the bowl sitting on ponies' head while it's
made to something else, as that'd likely turn most ponies away
from it. Was bad enough getting a brain freeze while eating cold
things, didn't need something of similar reaction happening
       before it, too.
When he finished explaining and he looked back to her so he
could continue with the previous subject, she giggled at his
warning and gave his shoulder a gentle pat as she responded. "I
could always do the talking for you, Haywire; I always seem to
have a way of charming ponies for some reason, so I could talk
and you could demonstrate. We'd just have to hope your
inventions would cooperate. Although it didn't seem like the
Thought Theater had any kind of performance anxiety, so maybe
that won't be a problem. I certainly hope not; the shop would
benefit so much from sponsorship, so the more the merrier." She
turned to Golden after, offering her trademark relaxed smile to
the mare as she asked, "How's the ice cream, Golden? And how
long did you have until you have to go to work, again?"
