Being Made of Gold Must Be Nice.
By: Star Catcher Date: May 12, 2014, 8:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
A measly collection of bits was the only thing she had left.
Frowning lightly, Star Catcher lifted a tiny bag of bits in her
hoof, inspecting the sad sight yet again as she wondered what
she was going to do. There were enough bits left to let her eat
dinner, but only just for this last night. After this, she was
going to be going hungry for who knew how long until she managed
to scrounge up some more bits... If only the job she thought
she'd had when she moved over here hadn't fallen through...
Giving a quiet sigh, Star returned the bag to her saddlebags and
looked up to the cafe in front of her, her growling stomach
reminding her of why she'd come here in the first place. There
was no 'just go a day without eating' for her. Not with the fast
metabolism she had. She was bound to get woozy and lightheaded
quickly if she went long enough without eating. After today's
last meal, though, it wasn't something she was going to have to
worry about until maybe late afternoon of the next day, where
she was afraid she'd have to start begging around for scraps or
enough bits to earn her a meal. It was something she desperately
wanted to avoid, but at this point it was starting to look more
and more likely.
Shaking those thoughts from her mind, Star stepped forward
towards the cafe in question, a worried frown still on her face.
It had felt like so long since she'd gone without some kind of
worry hanging over her head. It was all so taxing that some days
she just wanted to lie down and sleep the day away... but she
knew she couldn't do that. Life wasn't that easy. Eventually
there would be a light at the end of the tunnel, but for now she
was still just stumbling around in the darkness. As Star slipped
into one of the many empty chairs, a quiet groan escaped her
when her stomach growled its need for attention, her gaze
lowering briefly while she waited for a server to offer her a
menu. So distracted by her worries was she, that she didn't even
notice that she'd chosen to sit at a table already occupied by
somepony else...

Golden Gear sat alone in one of many cafes found all around
Canterlot. Why she had chosen this one, she had no idea, but she
had begun to regret her decision to dine there. Their hayfries
tasted awful compared to few other places she had been to.
Golden received some harsh looks from the more formal customers
there. She had stopped there to eat straight from her current
job and was still wearing the oil stained workgear blessed to
her by the mining company she worked for. The circles under her
eyes implied that she had been working all night.
Golden yawned loudly and stuffed more hayfries to her mouth when
she noticed somepony completely unknown to her sat down at the
same table with her. She raised her eyebrow, as the new, judging
by her looks a noble pony, seemed to not notice her. She waited
for a little bit longer before breaking the silence. "If you're
after food, you need to wave the waiter to bring you a menu...
They won't bring it otherwise..." Golden yawned again and took a
sip from her drink.

Not quite expecting to hear somepony else talk to her in such
close vicinity, Star jumped slightly when Golden Gear spoke up,
her gaze quickly flicking up to meet the source of the noise,
her wings spread out mid-flare before she realized what had
happened and sheepishly folded her wings back against her body.
"Er... Thanks," Star said a little awkwardly, mind scrambling
for a moment in an attempt to figure out how to make the
situation a little better. "Sorry... If I disturbed you. I've
just had a lot on my mind recently--I didn't realize you were
sitting here. I'm Star Catcher," she said with a slight wave
before fidgeting her hooves against each other. "Um... I don't
suppose you'd mind if I bothered you for some company while I'm
here? I understand if not, but I feel like some nice
conversation might do me some good..."

Golden raised her eyebrow again at Star's sudden scare. "You're
welcome." She replied and returned her attention to her food.
"Golden Gear" Golden introduced herself a little bluntly. "And
don't worry... You *yawn* didn't" Golden left her food alone for
a while when Star asked if she could stay there for some
company. Golden gave Star another look, before taking a glance
around the cafe, not sure why Star stopped by her table, from
all the empty seats on other more or less filled ones, but she
shrugged it off and said "Feel free... I don't own the place."
From the way Star presented her question, Golden figured that
the mare had something on her heart she wanted to talk about.
"I'm not much of a conversationalist though." She said and
leaned to her hooves, indicating that she was listening.

Having waited for a confirmation from the mare on the other side
of the table, Star gave a small smile of thanks to Golden before
glancing around to find a waiter, only to wave him down as
Golden suggested. "I'm sure you're much better than you believe
yourself to be," Star said encouragingly as she returned her
attention to the mare across from her. "Unless you just happen
to wind up not interested in the conversation at all, then... I
suppose I'd just have to chalk that up to my appearing out of
nowhere," a shrug was given at that before she continued with,
"So how are you today, miss Gear?"
She then glanced up as the waiter came over to her with a menu,
and offered the stallion a smile as well as she took it from him
before looking back to Golden to show she was still listening.

A small smirk made it's way to the corner of Golden's mouth when
Star tried to encourage her. Golden simply chuckled, before
saying "can't you tell... Tired, powerless, feeble. You name
it... *yawn* I... *mumble* " Rest of her sentence was lost in
her mumbling. Golden cleared her throat before continuing "I've
had a long shift today... and yesterday" Golden momentarily
looked at the waiter, who brought Star a menu. "And the next
shift starts in couple of hours... But otherwise i'm great."
Golden said the last part with obviously sarcastic tone.
There was a moment of silence before Golden thought that she
should probably try to contribute something to their
conversation too. "Eh, How about you, Star?"

As Golden laid out how she felt to Star, the pegasus gave a
light frown of sympathy to the mare, which only evolved into a
look of slight distress when it was mentioned that her next
shift was in a couple of hours, on top of having two long shifts
in a row. Not entirely sure what to say, Star sat for a moment,
thinking, before Golden returned the question to Star. "I've...
Been better, myself. Just really stressed and worried about my
immediate future. That's terrible about being exhausted,
though... If you'd rather head off to get a little bit of a nap
before your shift then please, don't let me stop you! Your
well-being is much more important than my interest in a
conversation. What is it that you do that pushes you like this,
anyway?"

"Oh no, If i lay down and close my eyes now, i won't wake up for
the next twenty hours." Golden said, flailing her hoof in
refusal to Star's suggestion. "I'll be alright." She assured
Star. Golden raised her eyebrow again at Star's last question.
"What else would i do with my time? I'm working with machinery,
that's what i'm good at. I don't want to lose my job just
because there's another group of ponies who are trying to snatch
my place as the maintenance pony there... *yawn* That's the main
reason for my long shifts lately..."
Golden wanted to return to Star's answer to her earlier
question. "Why are you worried for tomorrow? Are you in trouble
or something?" Golden asked, leaning to her hooves again.

Despite Golden's reassurance that she'd be fine, Star still
looked a little hesitant for Golden to still be up and talking
to her... But she wasn't going to intrude too much in somewhere
she didn't belong. If Golden said she was fine, Star would just
have to take her for her word. Although, as Golden mentioned
that she worked with machinery, one of Star's brows shot up as
the gears in her head started turning. She stared thoughtfully
at Golden for a few moments until the mare asked why she was
worried, causing her to drop her gaze down to the table in front
of her.
"Figuratively speaking," she responded to Gear's question of if
she was in trouble, her hoof gently flicking the menu up over
and over. "This is gonna be my last meal before I run out of
bits to be able to spend. I haven't been able to find a job, and
I've already had to move out of the apartment I had when I moved
here. I just don't know how I'm going to eat," she then shook
her head slightly, a hint of reluctance on her face. "I didn't
come here to worry you with those details, though. I just wanted
to get something to eat," she finished, her stomach piping up
again moments after to back Star's words up. "If you're as good
at your job as you say you are, how come you're worried that
other ponies might take your place if you don't work enough?" As
she asked this, she began skimming through the menu, looking for
something that might be worth these last few bits of hers.

"Hah hah! Better get the best meal money can buy then." Golden
said with humorous tone, that had a hint of reassurance in it,
but Golden couldn't help but frown as Star told her about the
misfortune she had faced lately. "Sounds pretty bad... I usually
live where my work is, like at the small apartment reserved for
the mine workers at the moment. I haven't owned a house since...
*sigh* For a long time..."
Golden leaned back on her chair, when Star seemingly wanted to
change the subject, but she managed to earn a chuckle from
Golden when her stomach reminded her of it's emptiness.
Golden huffed at the newly presented question, "The problem is
that there's five of them and only one of me. They can have a
pony on the job twentyfour hours a day. I'll work approximately
eighteen hours, sleep few and get back to work. Good thing is
that those scrubs can't keep up with me, or match the quality of
my work. The bad thing is that i'm wearing out and don't know
how long i can keep this up. *sigh* I just have to hope that
they'll give up soon..."
Golden watched as Star looked through the menu, seemingly having
hard time on deciding what to spend her last bits on. Golden
leaned back towards the table "Hey, here's what we do. Pick
anything you'd like from that menu, anything." She tapped the
menu with her hoof "I'll pay the bill. And i won't take no for
an answer."
