       A Ponyville Lunar Festival
By: Ivory Star Date: April 30, 2014, 4:17 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Ivory Star sighed quietly, smiling softly to herself as she sat
and gazed lazily across the smooth horizon overlooking the
outskirts of Ponyville. With a silvery-blue hoof placed gingerly
above her golden eyes, the Noctral peered silently in thought at
the setting Sun, dipping lower and lower beneath the unbroken
skyline, like a vast weight sinking slowly into the Earth
itself. As its glorious light began to disappear from view, a
subtle blanket of ebony crept steadily, purposefully across the
sky. For a few, breathtaking moments, the two forces of light
and dark seemed to meld seamlessly together, painting the sky
brilliant, vivid hues of orange, red, and violet, growing dimmer
yet more profound as the Sun's rays receded from view. One by
one, tiny little stars, now unhindered by the Sun's overwhelming
light, peered timidly into view above their ebony canopy,
twinkling faintly amongst their growing number of brothers and
sisters. For a moment, everything was perfect... Serene...
Beautiful... A moment truly worth all the inspiration the world
had to offer, and more. And to know that no matter who you are,
or where you are on this world, all you had to do was look up at
the sky... And for that brief moment, you could be connected to
any infinite number of ponies also looking up at the sky. It
could be your neighbor... It could be somepony across town, in
another city, or even halfway across the world... A truly, truly
       magical moment.
The tranquil twilight came and went nearly as quick as it had
started, leaving Ivory in a state of wonder as she simply stared
at where the sun had once been, its last fringes of light
casting a luminous glow upon the rising, full moon. In just a
few more minutes, the incandescent moon would sit itself high in
the sky, casting its protective, silvery glow across the land.
It was time... The Noctral finally stood up, stretching her
leathery wings and yawned softly before taking a quick glance
over her shoulder as she adjusted her mane and tail. There was a
faint light in the distance from the camp she had set up for
tonight's performance earlier that day, and the unmistakable
sound of ponies playing and talking were quite clear to Ivory's
keen ears. There must be at least over a dozen, not including
the musicians, she thought to herself... Perhaps the
advertisements she had been posting around town earlier in the
week were finally catching curious eyes. The trouble with
putting on a late-night performance lied simply in the fact that
most ponies enjoyed their beauty rest and couldn't be bothered
to stay up and watch, which would be completely understandable.
The simple prospect of the matter, however, still tugged at
Ivory's frustration. Ponykind created a holiday to hail Princess
Celestia and the Sun, namely the Summer Sun Celebration, and
ponies would travel far and wide to attend such a grand
festival. Why couldn't there be a night to honor Princess Luna
and her Moon? Surely the Princess of the Night deserved some
       special recognition... Right?
Ivory shook her head with a bit of a gruff, now trotting over
the hilly meadows to make her way towards the camp. Regardless
of the number of guests in attendence, she was absolutely
positive that her impromptu festival would be a huge success and
could even attract more ponies for the next one. Perhaps even
Princess Luna herself would make an appearance! Just the mere
thought brought a warm smile to Ivory... But for now, a simple,
humble meadow and a few curious ponies would do...
As Ivory approached her destination, she was surprised to
discover that somepony, or perhaps a group of ponies had taken
the liberty to spruce up the camp while she was out. A few
personal mats and wooden stalls had been set up for various
baked goods with small lights strung up between their posts. A
definite improvement from just sitting on the ground around a
small campfire, but Ivory still couldn't help but wonder: why...
Before long, she had found out that the improvements were
suggested by a former shop owner who had attended her last
performance and wanted to see it grow into something more...
Free food, free drinks, games for the younger ponies, musicians
collaborating with one another as they strolled or flew around
the camp. With about twenty guests that she could see, this was
shaping up to be more of a proper festival than she had first
thought. For now, Ivory still had some time before her
performance, so she set her sights on meandering with the other
ponies, keeping an eye out for friends along the way.

Kindle stored her cart in the shed behind the house she was
renting after having organized the candles it held into boxes in
her room. The night was a pleasant temperature and the sky was
putting on a wonderful display of colors, so she decided to take
an evening stroll. Her black cat, Coal, padded behind her
silently through the Ponyville streets. Together, they wandered
up and down the streets until they reached the edge of town. By
that time, the sky had darkened to a velvety black, dotted with
shimmering stars. They seemed closer to Kindle out here in the
country than they had back in Canterlot. Without any large
buildings blocking her view of the stars, Kindle felt as if she
could reach out and touch one with her hoof.
As Kindle looked over the nighttime landscape, she caught sight
of a different kind of glow. Somepony had started a campfire
just a bit away. Kindle hadn't sat around an outdoor fire in
ages, and she loved to watch the flames flicker in the wind. The
evening was getting chillier now that the sun had gone down, so
she might as well see if she could share in the warmth. Besides,
it would be good to meet some more ponies from town. As Kindle
made her way over, still trailed by Coal, she realized the fire
was part of something larger than just a casual gathering. Given
the collection of carts and ponies, there seemed to be some kind
       of festival going on.

It was a while after the events of Pepper coming to town, so
Pepper decided after the events of the day to wind down by
investigatign what was going on. The scent of eppers of course,
meandering along with him, like a constant not bad smelling, but
spicy companion. He had taken time to groom himself earlier int
he day it seemed. Travel dust from the road was cleaned,
leaving his orange and black coat silky soft and even more
fluffy than usual and since he had had to learn his lesson about
gender considerations, wore his mane long and over his left eye,
his tail swishing eagerly as he saw many ponies gathering for
       this festival.
As he looked around, he saw a pony he had seen in the square
selling candles...He'd meandered away with marked before he
could say Hello, so he decided now was a good as time as any!
"Hello! I saw..your cart in the square, earlier today." He said
with a smile. "I didn't get a chance to say Hello, that was rude
of me, I'm a bit of a new vendor int he area as well.." He said
in a gush of over-eager puppy like enthusiasm to meet a new
       person. Ugh, Dammit Pepper.

As Kindle stood at the edge of the meadow, trying to figure out
what was being celebrated, an orange pony approached her. She
vaguely recognized the pony, and the spicy scent reminded her
that she had seen the same pony selling peppers in the market
square earlier that day. Coal, who had figured out that
strangers sometimes gave treats to adorable cats, immediately
       approached the newcomer.
"Hi, I'm Kindle," she replied to the pony's enthusiastic
greeting. "So, since you're new here too, I don't suppose you
know what this festival is for? I've been trying to figure it
out." Kindle had one more question that she was hesitant to ask,
for fear of offending the other pony, but selling candles to new
ponies all day had forced her to set aside some of her shyness.
"I don't mean to be rude, but are you a mare or a stallion?"
Kindle asked. The pony was taller than most mares, but Kindle
knew both tall mares and short stallions (her twin brother,
Striker, was only slightly taller than most mares), so height
wasn't a great way to determine gender. The pony's mane and coat
were a bit feminine, but given his (or her, if she was wrong)
overall build, Kindle would have guessed the pony was a
stallion. She just didn't want to risk more confusion and
possibly offending the friendly pony even more if she didn't ask
       straight away.

Is this really the place? Ivory had said maybe a dozen or so
ponies usually show up. And it's a small thing. She said
nothing about carts and stalls. Just musicians, a little bit of
food shared. Geez, his cookies would probably be a flop, based
on the presentation of some of the stall foods. He had to carry
them over in his bag, emptying out most of his art supplies to
make room for them and a small blanket to sit on.
Or at least that's how he compares them with the few pieces he
can actually see, squinting closely and drawing odd looks from
some of the other ponies around. Or he assumes they're looking
oddly at him. It's kind of hard to tell. He had eventually
managed to find an optometrist, but he'll have to pick the
lenses up in the morning. The repair, even magical, of
something as delicate as a lens takes a certain amount of
precision if they want to make it fit to its old design, and the
curve of them is rather important to the proper refracting of
the light. He understands it, of course. It doesn't make it
any easier to see while he's waiting for them to get fixed,
       though.
After a bit more time of wandering and asking, he does manage to
find out that yes, this is the right place and yes, if he kept
looking at ponies that closely there was probably going to be a
lawsuit. Oh well. No matter. He sets his blanket up a bit
away from the majority of the setup, not really comfortable
being around so many ponies when he couldn't even see. Heck, he
would have just stayed home if he hadn't already told Ivory he'd
be coming. Would this be any better, though? Yeah, sorry I
won't actually be able to see what's happening, just 'cause you
thought I might enjoy it and stuff, but I'm clumsy and they got
smashed while I was helping a Potato themed super hero track
down a thief. This will go over so well.
Eh. Maybe he could get a little bit more work done on a
commission while he's here. He only got rid of *most* of his
art supplies to make room for the cookies and blanket, not all
       of them.
He has his pencils out before he realizes his mistake. His poor
eyesight, combined with the relatively low light out here, makes
this a rather difficult proposition to get off the ground. 3
lines on the paper, and he can't see any of them. Well. What a
fine evening this is shaping up to be, he thinks. Can't see the
main event, a hard time even talking to anypony without giving
them glares of death...at least his cookies are good. He raises
one to his mouth and gives it a munch. Well. Pretty good,
anyway. He'd used a bit much sugar for his taste, but maybe
everypony else wouldn't mind so much.

Pepper peered at Kindle and let out a giggle. "Oh, Mare or
Stallion, it's a hard choice isn't it?" He said with a chuckle.
"On one hand I could be a pretty mare though not so pretty as
you, or perhaps I'm just a pretty for a stallion kind of
person." a bit of a shoulder roll. "Sadly I seem to be a very
pretty stallion, but let's not let that get in the way of
things. Though I rather like pretty mares like yourself." Weird
pony. "It's a pleasure to meet you Kindle." He said bowing his
head, then looking at the Cat, tilting his head to the side. "Oh
how adorable. I wonder if cat's like peppers.." He mused, as he
pulled out a mild banana pepper and offered it to the cat,
       watching it's reaction.
"As for the festival...your guess is as good as mine." He said
with a sigh. "It looks like it should be entertaining, and I'm
not overly eager to return to my secluded little farm
already..." He said with a sigh. "It's a bit lonely out there,
without family around." Tail swishing lazily, he stood nearer to
Kindle than most pony's might if they were not at least friends,
though this could be dismissed as him still splitting his
attention from the Cat and Kindle.

Kindle raised an eyebrow at Pepper's roundabout response, but
smiled and blushed slightly at his compliments. As the pony
offered Coal a pepper she thought about stopping her cat,
thinking that peppers might not be great for him to eat, but
before she could lift a hoof, Coal had snapped up the food just
like the other treats he had been offered throughout the day.
Half a second later, the cat arched his back and hissed, as if
suddenly confronted by a large dog. He dashed in a few circles
before seemingly regaining his composure and slowing to an
dignified walk. Coal sat next to Kindle's back hoof and began
washing himself as if nothing had happened.
"Sorry about Coal. I'm sure your peppers are fine, he's somewhat
of a picky eater. An a drama queen," she said, looking sternly
at the cat. Coal stared indifferently at her for a moment and
went back to washing himself. "Well, hopefully it will teach him
not to beg for food from everypony he meets."
Kindle understood Pepper's sense of loneliness, although she
didn't mind some time to herself. "I know what you mean about
family. Canterlot isn't too far away, though, my brother even
paid me a visit this morning. I suppose it's just part of being
a bit homesick, although I think I like Ponyville better than my
       old home already."

"Yeah..I'd move here myself if it wasn't for my farm having all
the peppers." He said with a laugh. "My parents passed
away...recently. During the troubles in canterlot with the
changelings." He said with a sidelong glance, his exuberant
outwardness fading for a bit but he shook his head. "That's all
in the past though!" He said with a smile. "So you make candles?
I'll definitely have to stop by the next time you are out and
about." He said with a nod as he looked at Coal and smiled.
"Sorry about that, and it's fine, I love pets, everyone's pet
seems to mirror their personalities a little bit though." He
teased. "I don't have one..but maybe I'll get one soon.
Hopefully one that can stand smelling peppers a lot." He said
with a shrug and swish of his tail. "Your brother eh? What's he
       like?"

Lamplight steps out of the door to her inn, just after sundown.
As she usually does on the night of the full moon, she's closing
early. She looks up at the sky, watching the full moon for a
moment before smiling and heading off into the streets of
Ponyville. The night is warm an the sky is clear, and there's a
slight breeze blowing through the town. A perfect night for a
show. She trots through the streets, much earlier than she
usually does, and quickly reaches the edge of town, and soon
after, the festival. There's quite a few more ponies than she'd
expected tonight, before it just being a small group that showed
up to watch, but tonight there were stalls set up, and over a
dozen ponies had gathered to see the show. She's recognizes the
regulars, of course, but most of the ponies here the orange mare
is unfamiliar with. She stops at one of the few stalls, grabbing
a bite to eat, and moving off to set down her own blanket off to
the side, near where a green pegasus has just finished with his
own. "Nice evening." She says. "Haven't seen you here before,
       guess you saw the posters?"

Oh. She hadn't entirely understood his comment about family,
then. Kindle shivered slightly when Pepper mentioned
changelings; that day had been terrifyingly chaotic, but at
least all of her family members had made it through intact. She
was glad when Pepper shifted the conversation back to lighter
topics. "It would be great if you stopped by to see my candles
sometime! Unfortunately, I don't have any pepper-scented ones,
although if you really wanted some I could probably work
something out. I should try some of your peppers too, hopefully
I'll like them more than Coal did." Coal was still acting
oblivious about the whole pepper-eating scenario. "As for my
brother, his name's Striker, and he's studying in Canterlot to
be a pyrotechnician: working with fireworks and the like. Even
though he's my twin, we're somewhat of opposites, I like to say
that I deal with soft fire and he deals with loud fire. We get
along well, though. What about you, any siblings?" Kindle
noticed other ponies forming groups, and some looked more
familiar with the place. "As you're talking, how about we go ask
them what this festival's for?" she suggested, pointing to an
orange mare and green pegasus sitting not too far from where
       they were standing.
