       Re: Down in the park
By: Dais Clash Date: April 22, 2014, 12:16 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
"It'll only be for a short while" explained Dais, his mane and
tail becoming more and more distinctly
cartoon-devil-horns-and-pointed-tail like "And besides, if all
that stuff you said before is what she's missing here, then East
Manehatten should be a paradise for her! If anything, I'd only
be concerned about whether she ever wants to come back. Though
of course once she realizes the importance of friendship she'll
come right back with a huge grin on her face. And in the
meantime, I will take time to learn to be a better friend by
finishing her project for her myself - as a surprise for when
she gets back. Once she sees it, she's sure to become my friend.
Then we'll put her in a nice orphanage, and she'll be adopted by
a happy family, and everypony will live happily ever after. See,
didn't I tell you I'd worked it all out? My plan is foolproof."
He was a little taken aback by Carri's request to be with Brash
however. "Carri, it's..." began Dais, but he trailed off,
thinking of the right way to put this.
"It's really for her own good, you understand. And mine, and...
well... for yours. Brash would have total perimeter security -
that means she'd be secure from you too. But I think you'd be
allowed to visit her sometimes. It's really only a place for
ponies that don't understand that friendship is, ummm...
important. At all. Most of them do far crazier things than Brash
does - and if your right, then Brash would only need to bring
herself to admit that she needs friends in her life, and she'd
probably be let out at once. Doctor Wave isn't exactly a pony
who would keep an inmate - oh, I mean, ummm, service user - for
any longer than they need to be there. Brash's words may have
hurt me deeply, but I'm going to do whatever it takes to make
Brash say we're friends. Please don't be upset, I'm sure she
won't have to stay there long at all."

If Brash were to know Dais even suggested this, at best she
would make him her number one enemy, at worst Brash would likely
attack Dais with the intent to kill.
"Oh, no, do not do her project for her! That's the single worst
thing anypony could do! She can't be separated from it! I tried
to help her move a piece of it in the right place and she bit
me!" Carri rubs a foreleg remembering the instance, "I mean she
did tell me not to touch anything and she said sorry afterward,
but I can't express how much that project means to her."

"So you're saying..." stammered Dais, new tears beginning to
form in his eyes again, and his face experiencing the same
beginnings of a depressive onset that Carri had witnessed
earlier "You're saying that... that my foolproof plan... won't
       work?"
Then suddenly his face brightened up again. "OR are you just
saying that because you want to argue with me about it?" he said
with newfound confidence "'Cause I am totally - totally up for
       an argument right now!"

Carri didn't understand why anypony would want to argue, but she
did understand that she didn't want to make her friend sad.
"Well if you really wanna argue... what's there to argue?" Carri
fears the result won't turn out well, especially since she's
sure she's made her point clear already.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
"Awesome!" said Dais happily before Carri could finish "Your
personal anecdote is nothing but unreliable evidence. Even if
true, just about anything could have caused her to flip out -
including a lack of appreciation for your help as a friend. That
project may mean a lot to her now, but once she learns to share
it with her friends, she'll never keep it to herself or flip out
again. I submit as evidence the fact that, taken individually,
each of the things you asked for helps Brash to complete her
project. She must therefore be willing to accept help, provided
that the help is indirect. Her issue with direct help is most
likely related to the very friendship problems I can already
help her solve! The fact that the project means a lot to her
only proves just how much she's going to like me as a result of
       this."
In his heart of hearts Dais knew he wasn't right, but he wasn't
going to let that get him down or stop him from winning the
argument. He was totally enjoying himself too much for that.
       "OK, your turn" he challenged.

Carri froze up a bit, feeling put on the spot. As well she
didn't want to argue, but it did seem to make Dais happy so she
formed her retort, "Well, I uh, think... You have less evidence
than I do as to who she is... you only spoke to her a moment and
I've known her for a couple days now. You might be older, but I
still think I have a bigger say in this sort of thing. Also,
she's been accepting my help with gathering supplies, and if she
wants to build her machine a specific way, then she's the only
       one for the job."
Carri lacks any confidence in her words doing anything.

Dais looked astonished. He paused for a long moment, mouth
hanging slightly open. "Wow" he said at last, almost in a
whisper "You are a good friend. Taking me on with no prior
experience in an argument takes serious guts. Nopony else in
Ponyville I've met so far has been willing to do that. I mean,
that was the most fun I've had in a long time. Way to cheer me
up! Not to mention you were actually half decent. Of course, if
we were to continue I'd totally thrash you... but really it's
not about me, or even about Brash. It's about you. Coming to
return my book was one thing, but doing something for me you
probably didn't even want to do? Only a true friend would do
that. And if a true friend of mine doesn't want me to do
something, there's no way in Equestria I'm going to let them
       down! I still think I'm right ... I mean, I know I'm right, of
course ... but I'll think of something else I can do for when
she gets back, for your sake. Like - giving her a special plaque
in the new homeless shelter or something? Or maybe she can cut
the ribbon with the mayor? Don't worry Carri, I'll think of
       something..."

Carri nearly buckles as the look of astonishment on Dais's face
makes her think that she's failed spectacularly. Then as Dais
explains she begins to look confused. "I dunno anypony who
wouldn't do all I did, I mean maybe Brash would've tried
something different but... Remember I can help with whatever you
think might help Brash, as long as we're not sending her away."
Carri nods, looking around she thinks it might be time to part
ways and makes sure she's clear for takeoff.

"Wait... what?" cried out Dais "I thought this was just about me
finishing the project! What I meant was - while she's away, I've
got to do something to prove myself friendship-worthy. I was
going to do her project but now I've got to think of something
else. But sending her away is really the right thing to do.
Please, Carri, I'm trusting you as a true friend here. Can't you
       trust me as well?"

"Oh, right..." Carri had let it slip her mind since she'd
thought she won all the arguments she had at once, "But I really
think you give her a chance, she's only been away from Canterlot
for a couple days now, and she has said that she's never even
gone outside before coming here. She also has a few things she
has to do for some other ponies, like rebuilding Applejack's
plow. I'll trust your choice when you've actually talked to her
for more than a minute, I'll say again there's no way you could
know what's best for her so quickly. Once you get past her rough
exterior you might find she's just her own pony and not so
       terribly bad."
