Dais managed a small giggle through his sad face. "Oh yeah" he
said as though recollecting "I did help you didn't I..."
Then he quickly turned it in to a sigh again. "And for what? I'm
still a useless pony. I don't care what the results are - Brash
was never my friend. I didn't change anything - and that's the
problem. I just can't stand it when somepony isn't my friend.
I'm sorry Carri, I really do want to be there for Brash if
you're right, but Brash has given up on me. I feel like my whole
life is ruined now that Brash isn't my friend. And regardless of
my intentions or how good I was, it's still my fault that it
happened."

"Wha'? No, listen! I'm sayin' Brash -is- your friend. I can
prove it too!" Carri tries to formulate a plan, but no thought
come to mind, "...but I don't know how!"
"Anyway, I'm sure Brash would be there for you if you ever need
it, she'd be there for anypony. That's why she's building a
robot guard to defend everypony." Carri nods momentarily before
shoving a hoof into her mouth and then releasing muffled
mutters, likely about how she wasn't supposed to say that. She
looks around frantically to make sure nopony else heard.

Dais didn't even flinch as Carri spoke. The more he listened,
the more he also found new ways to blame everything on himself.
With his head hung low, Dais got up from the park bench and
slowly strolled away from it. "Sorry Carri" he said to the
ground "I don't know if Brash is the friend you say she is, but
I do know that I'm not the friend you think I am. I should have
known better. Don't you worry about me Carri. I'm just a silly
old good-for-nothing."
He activated his horn without stopping, causing his book to fly
on to his back.
"I promise I'll make this right, somehow. Everything's my fault,
so it's my responsibility to fix it. I will make myself so
useful to Brash that she'll want to be my friend forever. I
can't give up on her. But first I need to find a reason not to
give up on myself. I didn't change anything back there - I need
to make it so that the next time Brash sees me, she jumps up and
says that she wants to be my friend. Hmmm - I wonder if I have
any of the old friendship potion left? Or maybe I could build my
own guard pony, saving Brash the effort of making one? I'll
think of something, I will..."

Carri extracts her hoof from her mouth and draws in some much
needed air. "I, uh..." She had exhausted all she had to try and
tell Dais that Brash didn't mean it and getting the desired
result wasn't going to happen, but she still had to make sure
her friend wouldn't be sad forever.
"I'm going to help!" She declares, "Whatever it is that you
think up to befriend Brash, you can count me in! And don't hold
back from asking me, as your friend I'll be happy to do
whatever." Carri stands at the ready, assuming he'll think up
something in a moment.

Dais sighed again as he continued walking back towards his
house. "I don't know" Dais admitted "You know Brash better than
me. Think a big party will cheer her up? A new video game? A
nice book? A rump roast? A pet squirrel? Free movie ticket? Key
to the city? A back massage? Some pretty flowers? New
horseshoes? A..."
Dais kept going through a long list of things he thought Brash
might like, but somehow he still felt none of them seemed right.

Carri listened to the list and starts by naming similar or more
specific things, "Well, rare books on magic, exotic enchanted
flowers, a pet hydra, a key to the city might work, also to her
door food deliveries, perimeter security, legal immunity, steady
funding, functioning smoke bombs, and that's all I can think of
at the moment." Carri smiles, not finding any of what she said
odd.

"Hmmm... perimeter security, legal immunity, steady funding and
food deliveries" said Dais thoughtfully "Then we need to work in
magic, flowers, a hydra and smoke bombs. Now how to do this..."
Dais tapped his chin three times thoughtfully. Then, suddenly he
burst up into a smile. It wasn't a happy smile though - more
like a wicked crooked smile.
"I know just what to do!" he continued neutrally "Carri, can you
take a letter for me?"
With a quick wave of his horn, there was a bright flash of
light, and a quill, ink and parchment appeared at Carri's side.
"If you're right then I think I know just what will get Brash to
befriend me. This is just too perfect... just copy down what I
say and take the letter to where I tell you, alright?"

"Oh!" Carri gleams with excitement as she takes the quill and
parchment, "I've taken a penmanship class once, I don't remember
my grade though." Carri sets the parchment on the ground, inks
the quill and sets it over the paper. "Ready when you are!" She
announces.

Dais cleared his throat and started pacing. He spoke with the
eloquence of a practiced orator, incredibly professionally and
clearly.
"My dearest Doctor Brain Wave," he began "I've been meaning to
write you for ages but haven't found the time. Life as a mayoral
assistant sure can be distracting! Other than that, life in
Ponyville is good. Anyway, I recently came across an orphan foal
who would like to live in conditions of total perimeter
security, legal immunity for her actions, steady funding for no
reason other than her individual condition, and regular
deliveries of food. She seems to have significant trouble
grasping the fundamentals of friendship, and those close to her
believe she may have undergone significant trauma in her past.
"Her name is Brash. One of her hobbies seems to be rare books on
magic, so ensure she has access to plenty of books about the
magic of friendship. She also enjoys exotic enchanted flowers,
so you might want to ask if the chef can mix in a few "friend's
delight" into her meals. I hear those are in full bloom around
Manehatten right now. She likes hydras, so give her a hydra to
care for if you can. For some reason she also likes smoke bombs.
Might be a good punishment if she acts in an unfriendly fashion.
I know how opposed you are to punishing your service users, but
this is a special request from Brash herself.
"I'll be happy to reimburse you with any extra expenses, though
I am sure you will recieve appropriate government funding for
Brash's care as well. Though you are a much better expert than I
am on these matters, we think Brash's condition is curable. With
appropriate psychiatric ticks and tools she should be ready to
call just about anypony her friend in no time. Do you have an
extra bed available she could stay in? I just know she'll really
appreciate your beautiful facilities, caring staff and
hospitable atmosphere. Kindest regards, Dais Clash. PS. Be sure
to give the foal delivering this message a big tip - she's a
smart young filly with a lot of potential."
He said the last part with a wink to Carri. "Now take this to
the Manehatten West Psych Ward. It's directly west of the
building with the huge horseshoe on it in Manehatten. Good
stallion, that Doctor Wave... always used to come by the library
to read all the latest medical discoveries, and always putting
his patients first. Not like some of those other physicians. And
besides, I've heard his methods are really effective. Isn't it
perfect? Brash can get exactly what she wants, and gets turned
into a friendly pony again in no time! And since I'll be the one
who helped her, I'll be Brash's number one friend! Oh, and you
of course."

Carri finishes writing the letter before even considering what
it was she'd been writing. "I think..." Carri trails off for a
few seconds, imagining attempting to remove Brash from her
current abode. "Will Brash have to move? 'Cause that seems
terribly risky." Carri rolls up the letter and stows it in her
jacket. "And I mean taking a toy from a cat levels of risky."
Carri states as if that's the worst she could come up with.
"And I'd be able to move in with her right? This place sounds
really exclusive." Carri asks in concern.
