Re: Candles, Anypony?

"Really! An autograph!" Kindle's eyes shone with excitement.
Striker would be so impressed! She almost started prancing up
and down, when she remembered that she was supposed to be acting
like a professional businesspony. "I mean, sure, if you want to,
that would be great!" Kindle checked the price of Vinyl's
candles on her list. "Your total for the candles is 7 bits," she
said, scribbling down the purchase on a receipt.
Coal decided that he had received enough petting for the moment
and padded towards Kindle, meowing again. "Oh, hush, Coal,"
Kindle said, rubbing his head affectionately. "I know you just
ate breakfast, and you're not getting any more food from me
until lunchtime." She turned her attention back to Vinyl. "In my
free time, I like to read, and take walks with Coal. We haven't
wandered too far yet - I keep worrying I'll take a wrong turn
and get lost in the Everfree forest or something! I knew all the
streets in my neighborhood in Canterlot, but all the winding
trails are harder for me to keep track of," Kindle explained.
"What about you?" she asked Vinyl, curious what the star did in
her spare time.

Vinyl just chuckled as Kindle's excited response to the offer of
an autograph, not really surprised by it but still amused by it.
She nodded slightly before going to fish out the bits required
for the candles, levitating all seven coins to the mare across
from her as she listened to her next words. "Heh, you know,
almost every new pony I meet here always says 'this place is so
hard to navigate'," Vinyl said after Kindle finished, stepping
aside to idly sniff at some of the other candles on display for
a moment. "This place is so small though. Makes it hard to
imagine anypony really managing to get lost here. It's pretty
hard to come across the Everfree by accident though--it's
actually a ways out of town. Not too far, but you're not just
gonna stumble across it. Soooo, that's not really somethin' you
gotta worry about. I can show you around a little bit sometime
if you really want," Vinyl said with a shrug before pausing a
moment and scrunching her nose.
"That's not what you meant when you asked 'what about you',"
Vinyl murmured, shaking her head at herself. "Let's see... What
do I do in my spare time? More like, what don't I do. Uhh, I
don't really read that much, I don't really do fashion--not
because I have anything against it, I just don't understand
it--I'm not into weapons and stuff, or plays and things like
that..." She paused for a moment, the wheels in her head turning
as she tried to think of something else before simply shrugging.
"Other than that, if I haven't named it, I'm probably into it,
am willing to try it, or just haven't thought about it. Anyway,
you have anything you want me to autograph? If you don't have
anything here, I can always sign something later."

Kindle accepted the bits, storing them in a pocket in her saddle
bag, and levitated the bag of Vinyl's candles to the other mare.
She had actually done it! Her first sale! Kindle nodded as Vinyl
explained that getting lost in the Everfree forest was unlikely.
She had suspected her worries were overcautious, but it was nice
to hear somepony who lived in Ponyville confirm it. "Yeah, that
would be great," she responded to Vinyl's offer to give her a
tour. She hoped the mare wasn't too busy to hang out weekends or
some other time.
Kindle smiled as Vinyl talked about her interests. She sounded
so adventurous, just like Striker. She wished her brother could
have met his hero in person, she was sure they would have hit
off right away. Kindle was happier with a more quiet and
familiar lifestyle, although that hadn't stopped her from moving
away from Canterlot to try her hoof at starting a candle-making
business. Besides, if Striker couldn't meet Vinyl, an autograph
was the next best thing. Kindle looked around for something the
mare could sign, and eventually pulled out a blank receipt
paper. She wished she had something a bit fancier, but she had
travelled light from Canterlot, and hadn't brought any posters
or photographs along. Besides the receipt paper, the main thing
she had were wax candles, which would be extremely difficult to
autograph. "Would this be okay to sign?" she asked Vinyl,
holding out the paper.

Vinyl busied herself with sniffing at more candles while Kindle
searched for something Vinyl could sign, once again doing the
scrunchy-nose bit when a certain candle she didn't enjoy
assaulted her nostrils. She continued this until Kindle offered
her a piece of paper, to which Vinyl gave a grin and a nod of
her head. "Perfectly fine, if that's what you want me to sign.
If anything, if you find something else later that'd be more
sentimental, I'm more than willing to sign that too. You, uh..
Got a quill or something I can use?" she asked after taking the
paper and glancing around to look for something to write with.
"Can't have been easy, up and moving out of Canterlot like that.
What'd your friends and family say when they found out you were
moving? And what about your brother? What's he like?"

"Oh, here, use this," Kindle said, levitating the quill she had
been using to record the sale to Vinyl. She thought about her
transition from Canterlot to Ponyville. Overall, it had been
pretty smooth, but thinking about the ponies she had moved away
from... "It wasn't too big of a deal with my friends," she told
Vinyl. "Most of them went to magic schools or flyers academies,
while I was working as a clerk for my father's business, so I
kept in touch by writing mostly. I just gave them my new address
when I moved to Ponyville. I sent out a batch of letters a few
days ago, but the grey mailmare I sent them with didn't look
like she had a great sense of direction, so I don't know if they
got there... For my parents, my father was really supportive -
he had run his own forge since he was about my age, so he was
all for me starting a business. My mother, for some reason, had
always hoped me and Striker would gain high status in the
Canterlot elite, but I think she's figured out by now that it
will never happen, so she wasn't too upset." Now came the tricky
one. How to describe Striker to Vinyl? Her brother would be
upset if she made him sound weird or lame to his favorite
celebrity. "For one thing, Striker's a million times better at
magic than me," Kindle started. "He's studying at a magic
university to be a pyrotechnician..." Kindle trailed off as she
caught sight of a familiar face in the crowd of the market
square. "Well, speak of the devil! What in all of Equestria are
you doing in Ponyville?" she called to her brother.

Striker stepped off the train at the stop at Ponyville, glancing
around for any familiar faces. He was sure Kindle was doing fine
with her business, but since he hadn't heard from her at all
since the move and happened to have a free day this week, so he
decided to pay her a visit. Besides, it wasn't too much trouble
to make the trip from Canterlot to Ponyville. He asked one of
the ponies waiting at the station for directions for the market
square. Hopefully, Kindle would have started selling her candles
by now, and if not, it was as good a place as any to start
looking for her.
Striker trotted into the busy market square, instantly finding
Kindle's yellow coat that matched his. She was talking to a
customer, and Striker thought about waiting for them to finish
their conversation - until he realized that the customer she was
speaking with was none other than DJ P0N-3! Striker quickly
walked over to the stand, smiling at Kindle's surprised
greeting.
"Just decided to stop by and see how things were going for you
in Ponyville, sis. Although I can see you've already made
friends with the best of the best," he said, turning to DJ
P0N-3. "Hi, my name's Striker. I'm Kindle's twin brother, and I
hope she hasn't told you too many embarrassing stories about me
yet."

Using the quill to begin writing her signature and a small
message for Kindle's brother, Vinyl listened idly as the mare
began talking about her social predicament. Sounded pretty good
that Kindle just uprooting herself didn't upset too
much--probably made things a lot easier and a lot less painless.
Vinyl gave a brief chuckle when Kindle mentioned the mailmare,
knowing all too well what Kindle meant by her words. By the time
Kindle finished talking about her parents, Vinyl levitated the
receipt back over to the mare before leaning on the cart to
listen to the rest of what she had to say. She was a little
surprised that someone who was apparently so good at magic and
was attending a university was actually a fan of her music...
But she supposed it did take all kinds.
She perked her ears up again when Kindle trailed off and stared
at her questioningly, only to then blink as she greeted the very
same pony they'd been talking about. Well, that really was a
strange coincidence. She looked over to the stallion as he
approached, giving him a friendly grin in greeting as she waved.
"Oh, she hasn't told me too much," Vinyl responded after Striker
greeted them both. "She was only just telling me about your
horrible bed wetting problem," she teased, grinning wickedly at
him for a moment before shaking her head and offering a hoof out
to him. "Nice to meetcha, Striker. I hear you're a pretty big
fan of my shows; I believe your sis's got something to show
you," she said, gently tossing her head to Kindle as she
mentioned the mare. "So, the both of you, and your dad are
involved with fire in some way, huh? That's pretty cool,
actually. Did some freak accident happen to make that a thing?"
she asked, obviously teasing. "And is your mother the 'black
sheep' of the family or something, or does she do something
fire-related, too?"

Why was Vinyl looking at her like that? Oh right, Kindle
realized. The autograph. She had been so surprised by Striker's
appearance that she had completely forgotten about it. "Hey,
Striker," she tried to catch his attention, but he was already
responding to Vinyl's question. She decided to wait - he could
see the signature any time, it wasn't every day you got to chat
with your hero.

Striker blushed at the mare's teasing, but smiled back. It was
all in good fun. When she mentioned his and Kindle's parents, he
laughed. It was something of a family joke that both him and his
sister had taken up fire-related occupations. "Our mother blames
our father for getting us involved in fire," Striker said. "We
spent a lot of time around the forge when we were young. Kindle
here would spend hours just staring into the flames. Mom doesn't
deal with fire at all - she's an interior design pony, done some
work on the palace at Canterlot. She claims me and Kindle
inherited our style sense from her, though - Kindle's candle
designs and my firework patterns. So, uh, what brings you to
Ponyville?" Striker had assumed that DJ P0N-3 lived in
Canterlot, although he realized he knew barely anything about
the mare's personal life. Maybe she lived in Ponyville, which
would make his question sound stupid. Oh well. At least he
wouldn't come off as stalkerish.

For a few moments, Vinyl awkwardly continued to hold her hoof
out to Striker, waiting for him to bump it as well before she
slowly lowered it back to the ground, figuring if he wasn't
going to do it by now, he probably wasn't going to do it at all.
She guessed maybe he was just one of those ponies who had an
aversion to physical contact or something, so she just resigned
herself to leaning against the cart once more, shrugging off the
mishap as she listened to Striker with perked ears. She smirked
a little bit as some of their family history was explained
before he moved on to ask about Vinyl instead, and what she was
doing in Ponyville. "Well, I kinda live here when I'm not out on
tour or doing a gig. Couldn't really stand living in Canterlot,
so I just came over here where the ponies are a lot more laid
back. You can only do so little up there before the ponies start
trying to get the guards after you for 'disrupting the peace',"
she said mockingly, her hooves mimicking quotations in the air.
"Always wanted to get my bass cannon after those foals, but I
knew that'd just make more problems than I wanted to deal with."
She shook her head with that before tossing her head to Kindle
again. "She's still got something for you, by the way."
