Candles, Anypony?
By: Kindle Wick Date: April 7, 2014, 5:44 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Kindle Wick pulled her cart to an empty space in the Ponyville
market square. Today was it: her first day open for business.
Since moving from Canterlot a week ago, she had spent her time
melting wax and sculpting it, braiding wicks, and casting
spells, and she had finally finished her first full batch of
candles. Kindle had candles carved into shapes of ponies and
animals, scented candles, long-lasting candles, candles that
burned in colors all across the rainbow. Now all she had to do
was sell some.
Kindle carefully levitated her best goods from the inside of
her cart to the display area on the top. When she finished
arranging them, she hung a sign: Kindle’s Hoofmade Candles. As
she stepped back to admire her work, Coal, her black cat, peeked
out of her saddlebag and meowed.
“I’ll get you breakfast in a minute, Coal,” Kindle said,
shifting a few candles around to balance their appearance.
Should the red candle go to the right or the left of the blue
candle? Definitely the right. When she was satisfied, she
trotted over to a pet food stand across the square.
“A bowl of cat food and a saucer of milk, please,” she told the
salespony. After paying for the food in bits, she brought it
back to her stand and set it under the cart. Coal immediately
jumped down and began munching away. Kindle stood by her candles
and waited nervously for her first customer to appear.

"Aw, c'mon, 'Tavi, I don't need a list," Vinyl called as she
walked towards the door to the house. "I mean, it's just milk,
eggs, ice, and ice cream. How hard's that gonna be to remember?"
she asked with a roll of her eyes beneath the glasses covering
her eyes. "Anyway, you just chill; I'll be back in a bit." And
with that, Vinyl stepped out of the house and began walking
towards the marketplace, the small earbuds embedded in her ears
now blasting some sick wubs--likely loud enough for anypony
nearby to be able to hear the song being played as well.
Eventually, she began singing along with the song, her steps
matching up with the beat as well as she sang, "Oh things
change; no use holding on, because nothing stays the same. Oh,
things change; time passes by so fast, to keep out of the rain!"
Her first stop to get eggs went as planned. She exchanged bits
for goods and tucked them securely into her saddlebags and moved
on. However, her second stop was distracted. She caught sight of
colorful colors and 'ooh'ed before changing course to step over
to colors in question--that of the candles at Kindle's cart. She
examined the candles for a few seconds--the blaring wubs no
doubt quite audible if anypony was paying any attention--before
she yanked the buds from her ears to grin past the candles and
to the mare selling them. "Guess you really can find anything in
this place. Name's Vinyl," she introduced, reaching a hoof
across the cart for a hoof bump. "Any of these scented? I know
somepony who'd really dig some of these."

Kindle stared for a moment at Vinyl's extended hoof. What was
she supposed to do? Hand the mare a candle? Belatedly, she
remembered watching her brother exchange hoof bumps with buddies
back in Canterlot. Kindle tapped Vinyl's hoof gently, trying to
smile as confidently as the mare with the music blaring out of
her earbuds. It was going to take her longer to adjust to life
in Ponyville than she had thought.
"Scented candles? Uh, yeah, I've got a bunch. My name's Kindle,
by the way. Although you probably know that. From the sign I
mean," Kindle babbled. She cringed internally. She was already
making a fool of herself. "What kind of scent were you looking
for? I've got a few fruit: apple, peach, and such, and some
flower-scented ones as well. Here, I can show you."
Kindle used a spark of magic to light the wick of a rose-scented
candle, which released a whiff of perfume into the air.
Immediately, she realized that her customer would probably want
a fresh candle, not one she had already lit. "Sorry, I don't
know what I was thinking," she apologized to Vinyl. Kindle tried
to put the candle out by magic, but her nervousness caused the
simple spell to go haywire. The candle flame lept up into the
air, nearly burning Kindle's mane, before the managed to
extinguish it.
"Sorry," Kindle mumbled again. Several ponies from across the
square were staring at her cart. She wanted to sink into the
ground and disappear.

Satisfied with the hoof bump, Vinyl returned her hoof to the
ground and scanned her eyes over the various wax items in front
of her, wanting to reach out and sniff a few of them, but not
quite wanting to upset the mare selling them. As much as a good
gift these would make, it'd defeat the purpose if she wound up
not being able to buy any of them. She gave a nod in response to
Kindle's own introduction, offering a, "Cool name!" before
perking her ears at the various scents listed. None of those
really sounded all that appealing--plus they'd have to be scents
Vinyl herself could put up with, since she'd likely be having to
deal with smelling them. At the suggestion that she show Vinyl,
the mare offered a neutral shrug and resigned herself to
watching and smelling, only to then recoil slightly in confusion
at the freak-out that happened after.
"Whoa, chiiiiiiill, Kindle. I'm not here to mess with you,"
Vinyl said with a laugh, grin still spread on her lips. "That
was a pretty sweet trick. Haven't seen too many unicorns mess
with fire and fire magic. Must be pretty useful around winter
time. Aaaaanyway, lavender and vanilla's a scent, right? I think
that'd be a good one. What else d'you think a pony with... uh,
'finer tastes' might like?"

Kindle took a deep breath. She could do this. "Yes, I've got
plenty of lavender vanilla candles with me today. As for other,
well, 'fancy' scents, I have jasmine, which is in style in
Canterlot right now. I personally have always preferred cherry
blossom. Apple cinnamon is a classic," she said. Kindle wondered
who this pony with 'finer tastes' might be. She didn't like to
make assumptions, but Vinyl didn't seem the type to dress up and
go to fancy concerts where the orchestra played at pianissimo
half the time. Kindle herself hadn't enjoyed the stuffiness of
the Canterlot elite much herself, which was why she had decided
to move to Ponyville in the first place.
"May I ask who you are buying for?" Kindle inquired, hoping she
wasn't intruding in the other pony's privacy. It would be good
to start learning the names of ponies in town, especially if she
could start attracting some regular customers.
Coal had finished his breakfast and was beginning to wander
around the edge of the cart. He slipped behind Vinyl and started
pawing the mare's bright blue tail. "Stop that, Coal," Kindle
scolded.

Vinyl let out an 'ooh' when Kindle mentioned there were plenty
of lavender vanilla candles in stock, followed by another few
'ooh's after some of the other scents mentioned. Definitely
sounded like some things she would've liked. Especially cherry
blossom. Heck, it sounded like something even Vinyl herself
might like. "Can I have a sniff of the cherry blossom and
jasmine ones?" she asked, only to look up to Kindle when she
asked who Vinyl was buying for. She gave a grin at that before
taking an experimental sniff of one of the candles already on
display and scrunching her nose. "I'm buyin' for my marefriend.
Ever heard of somepony named Octavia Melody? One of the best
cellists out there? Anyway, she's pretty fancy, so I figure she
might like something like this." Upon feeling something hit her
tail, she glanced backwards before laughing and waving a hoof in
placation at Kindle. "No big deal, Kindle. No harm done. Cute
cat; how long've you had him for?"

Kindle levitated a pink cherry blossom candle and a green
jasmine one to the front of the cart for Vinyl to inspect."I've
had Coal for a long time," Kindle replied. "Since he was a
kitten and I was a filly. He was more of an indoor cat back in
Canterlot, but he seems to like it outside in Ponyville." As if
on cue, Coal meowed and rolled over on his back, begging for a
belly rub.
Octavia Melody... Now, that name did ring a bell, even though
Kindle hardly knew anyone in Ponyville. "Has Octavia ever
performed concerts at Canterlot?" she asked. Her mother had
convinced her to attend dozens of classical concerts in the last
few years, and she couldn't remember them all. Kindle tapped her
hoof absentmindedly against the ground, trying to pinpoint when
she had heard the name Octavia before.

Vinyl's lopsided grin only widened as Coal flopped over onto his
back, apparently trying to convince her to rub him. Giving in to
the temptation, Vinyl set her hoof to the cat's stomach and
began rubbing. As she did so, her horn began glowing so she
could levitate one of the candles to her nose--namely the cherry
blossom candle. She took a deep whiff while Kindle asked about
Octavia and let out a pleased 'ooooh' before she looked past the
candle to the mare, an 'are you serious' look hidden behind her
glasses. "You kidding me? Octavia practically rocks the whole
'classical music' scene. Bit too stuffy if you ask me, but by
Celestia's teats can that girl play." She paused for a moment to
set the candle down on the cart and give it a tap as she said,
"definitely this one," before levitating the other one to her
nose as she returned her hoof to Coal's belly--or whatever part
of him he was begging to have rubbed at that moment.
"So to answer your question: she's played tons. I've also
performed quite a few times there, myself," she finished before
taking a whiff of the new candle. Vinyl sputtered for a second
or two before scrunching her nose as she set the candle back
down on the cart. "Wow, was not expecting that one. Stronger
than I was expecting. Still, that makes cherry blossom and
lavender and vanilla for sure." With that, she levitated a bag
of bits out from her saddle bags as she asked, "So how long've
you been here in Ponyville? I'd say I'm a little surprised I
haven't met you yet, but then again it seems like we're getting
new ponies here every week."

Kindle hid a smile at Vinyl's reaction to the jasmine candle.
The scent wasn't her favorite either; she had no idea why ponies
in Canterlot adored it so much. Probably somepony popular had
been seen using a jasmine candle, and once a fad started in
Canterlot, it spread like wildfire.
"I just arrived in Ponyville a week ago," Kindle replied. "And I
spent most of that week holed up in my room making candles, so
it wouldn't surprise me if no one recognized me yet. Today's my
first day selling candles - actually, you're my first customer."
Kindle levitated the two candles Vinyl had chosen into a bag and
tied it off with a bow. She was about to finish the sale when
something Vinyl had said suddenly struck her: she had performed
in Canterlot too? With that mane, and those glasses... "Oh my
Celestia! You're DJ P0N-3!" Kindle couldn't believe she hadn't
recognized the mare when she first saw her. She knew that 'DJ
P0N-3' was just a stage name, but she had never heard what the
mare's real name was... Apparently, it was Vinyl. "My brother,
Striker, absolutely loves your shows!" Kindle wondered if
Striker would believe her when she told him that her very first
customer in Ponyville had been DJ P0N-3.

"Oh, dang," Vinyl said under her breath after hearing Kindle
admit she'd been holed up for the past week away from other
ponies. Vinyl wasn't sure she could do something like that--she
craved being social, and it got to her when she spent too much
time cooped up in the house alone. It was bad enough when she
spent as much time as she did making her songs, but that was
just something that went along with the job--something she had
to deal with. She waited after that to hear how much she owed
the mare for the candles before perking her ears up in surprise
when Kindle exclaimed, followed by her grin returning to her
lips. "Hehe, the one and only," she said proudly before Kindle
mentioned her brother.
Vinyl hummed to herself for a moment, then grinned a little
wider as she tossed her mane to the side. "Hey, how about this:
as a 'welcome to Ponyville' gift, what would you say to me
giving you an autograph for your brother so you can be the best
sister around?" she asked, not quite realizing how egotistical
that sounded--or, perhaps, not quite caring. "I still don't know
how much I'm paying you for these candles, by the way. And you
make these yourself? First time I've met a candlemaker. What
else d'you do for fun... when you're not making candles?"
