A Chili Cart Cometh
By: PepperSpray Date: April 6, 2014, 12:32 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
The creaking of wheels is heard in the early afternoon, a tan
and orange pony is pulling the cart, the cart from a distance
seemed to be a riot of reds, greens, and yellows, a tantalizing
scent, or at least to the pony pulling it wafts out, It's spicy,
but not too much, the Pony apparently bringing mild peppers to
town. He was both excited and nervous it was his first day
really bringing his peppers in to town to sell. Before he had
wandered anonymously going here, or there by himself, wandering
around, but today was the first harvest and it was time to be a
business pony. Hooves clopped against the ground as he got
himself closer. "A little hard work, and hopefully everypony
will like our chilis." He said to himself as he neared the town
of Ponyville, the words well worn like an old mantra as his
orange mane fell along his neck. To be completely honest,
someone looking at the stallion, with his tail especially long,
his horsehair fluffy, and his mane kept long and well taken care
of, might assume the Stallion was just a very tall girl,
especially with the one earring kept in his ear, silver chased
with green.
As he approached the square and other stall vendors, he began to
set up his stall, tail swishing in an excited manner, and up
close one could see different charms woven into his tial of
different sorts and metals, that caught the sunlight and glinted
as he worked. The cart's innards lifted up into four tiers of
grouped Chilis, arranged in spiciness with Bell Peppers, and
Sweet Bell Peppers in a pair of bins a the bottom, a bundle fo
cute looking Cherry Peppers, all ll the way to the top with
habaneros, the spiciest chilis he feels comfortable bringing. A
small banner waved from the hang-over that provided shade to the
cart, it read in red lettering. 'A Spice to Die for' Plopping
down on his plot, Pepper looked around, a pleasant smile on his
face, though after a few moments, he frowns, and begins to wnder
aroudn the cart, his wander lust kicking up and he began to
wonder if he coudl just leave a tray with prices and a bit
collection box..

Another rather slow day so far for a certain milk chocolatey
colored stallion making his slow and, to be honest, slightly
frustrated and bored way down this Ponyville street, a small
dissatisfied frown plaguing his features as he stewed over how
upset he was with himself at the moment. Not a single new idea
all morning! Going through the trouble of waking up early and
spending the first hours of the day staring at his notebook in
one of his favorite brainstorming spots and not one spark of
inspiration that he could use to ignite the creative fire needed
to spur the next chapter of his book forward had been struck.
Well... the tinder that was his imagination was seemingly
nothing more than a mass of soggy twigs and leaves left out
during an overnight drizzle of rain these days anyway, so spark
or no Marked was losing more and more confidence in his ability
to think of an interesting direction to take his story. Writer's
block was continuing to plague the pony and didn't look to be
willing to loosen its grip on him anytime soon.
A front leg was reached up to Marked's head as a pause was taken
in his walk, the hoof of which scratching just beneath the rim
of his hat for the day, a simple black fedora, and tussing up
the edge of his darker brown mane. Wasn't quite as chilly as it
had been lately in his opinion, the hoodie he'd been sporting
recently being swapped out for a light jacket that was worn more
for the sake of just having a jacket then for actual warmth. The
pockets definitely helped with getting to his glasses faster
than digging through his saddle bags, and a pen with
accompanying, and annoyingly blank, notepad in the other serving
well enough as tools for recording any wandering ideas or
daydreams he may be blessed with during the day. Honestly, he
didn't understand why more ponies didn't wear jackets like this.
Sure could prove to be conve-
Marked's thoughts were interrupted when the deep breath he'd
been pulling in through his nose was cut a bit short, the scent
the air was carrying tickling at his muzzle and causing him to
flinch a bit in surprise. He'd always been somewhat sensitive
when it came to taste and smell, and whatever he was picking up,
while probably relatively mild for anypony else, was strong
enough to get his attention. Something spicy perhaps? The writer
wasn't much of a fan of such things, him often avoiding the more
exotic options on resteraunt menus and swaying more towards the
sweeter side of a ponies diet, but... Hmm... A quick glance
around partnered with a few long and willing inhales was enough
to pinpoint the source of the scent, a cart not too far away
from where he had come to a stop with the pony he could only
assume was the owner appearing to be getting bored as he
wandered around it.
Without even realizing it, Marked had wandered over to the
town's square, his mild displeasure with his own brain having
distracted him as his hooves just carried him through town he'd
guess. Maybe this was a good thing though? Hmm... He never tried
spicy foods before, and from what he could tell from where he
was the colors and smell in the air hinted towards the cart
bearing some kind of spice or peppers... And Marked did
occasionally entertain the idea of how the best way to rekindle
creativity was to try new things, so...
"I'm probably going to regret this..." Marked mumbled to himself
as he picked his hooves back up into a light trot, the stallion
closing the distance between himself and the cart while putting
on a friendly smile and indeed confirming his earlier suspicions
of what was for sale once he'd reached the bright display.
Seeing the red letters of the banner, Marked let out a small
chuckle before speaking up to grab the owner's attention. "Happy
afternoon..." Uh... Miss? At a glance Marked wasn't quite sure.
This pony could easily stand out from a crowd, that was certain,
but the their gender was... slightly tricky to ascertain from
mere physical appearance... "This question might sound a bit
silly, but can you tell me what kinds of peppers you have here
exactly? And whether or not their intensity would make it wise
to leave and pick up a gallon of milk for protection before
coming any closer to them?""

Pepper perked as someone's curiosity was peeked by his profuse
amount of peppers. Hearing the stallion approached, Pepper
would turn his head towards the other. The way his coat shined,
and the way he didn't seem to blink as someone called him miss
didn't help Marked's confusion. Even when standing, Pepper's
tailw as long enough to hid the er, important bits as he was
asked by the other about something he quite enjoyed! His voice
was soft, and his mannerisms polite, like one that knew /about/
other ponies...but didn't interact by them, though it didn't
seem by habit for Pepper, just by circumstance. "Ah! Hello,
Welcome to my...er, Cart. A Spice to Die for! I'm Pepper."
Habitually he left the 'spray' part out. His parents had been
funny.
"Well, I didn't bring out any oof the heavy hitters but I did
notice the cart across from the fountain is selling a profuse
amount of perfect drinks." Inclining his head towards another
stall in the square. "But no preperation should be needed,
unless you have an overly sensitive stomach." He said with a
wink, before he indicated the first teir. "These are regular
Bell and Sweet Bell peppers." He said indicating a soft purple
looking bell-like pepper in one bin, and another bin contained
the supposedly sweet peppers in a red and green. "These are my
low-heat peppers, They have enough spice to nip but not bite."
He said with a wink at Marked. "Just above these, I have my
Cherry Peppers, the skin of these peppers are sweet, while the
core is the spicey surprise inside." He said with an actual
giggle! "I sell them a bit for five, if you'd like I would be
happy to let you take one of each kind though, for such a
handsome stallion." He said playfully.
Truth be told, Pepper came off a little odd, but sweet, his eyes
flitting to male and female, if that mattered, but now Pepper
focused on Marked, his bored trotting around halted, his chest
puffed out a little bit like a proud stall owner, tail swishing
just a bit as a breeze picked up his mane and slid dsome of it
infront of a brown eye, but not a move was made to move his
mane, patiently waiting on his customer.

Heh. A polite pepper pushing pony actually named Pepper? Quite
fitting. Maybe there was some kind of club parents joined after
having their first foal where they got together and plotted out
their child's future? Marked occasionally wondered such silly
things as the naming of ponies always seemed just a little too
convenient given the jobs said ponies always just happened to
end up with. Cutie marks always seemed to link up as well, so he
smelled a conspiracy, even from an early age where questions
about such a thing directed to his parents only ever got sly
grins and a change of the subject just to mess with him. Was
funny to think about these days since adulthood had dismissed
such fantastical ideas, but it was still entertaining to wonder
every once in a while just how much some names could affect a
pony's future. Anyway, that was enough of that for now, as there
were peppers he needed to wreck his mouth with!
News of how the other pony hadn't brought the stronger stuff
with him today was a relief, Marked kind of promising himself
he'd at least try one of the more intense peppers available
before leaving and being glad it wouldn't be too tough on him
today, as was the alert to how any beverage he may require for
taming whatever flames might suddenly erupt from his mouth
wasn't far very far away. The writer almost let himself relax
but was stopped when the pony warned such drinks wouldn't be
necessary unless he was particularly sensitive to such things.
Hehe... Well... He was, so Marked made a mental note of how many
seconds he estimated it would take for him to sprint for help.
The first few seemed tolerable enough, bell peppers being among
the few kinds that Marked could actually tolerate on a
semi-regular basis, though the stronger types were something he
still would try to put off if given the option. The second wink
raised Marked's eyebrow slightly as his initial assumption over
the first being just a business pony being a business pony gave
way to a small suspicion that it may in fact be a small twitch
of some kind, though such thoughts were dismissed soon after as
his attention was instead focused onto the cherry peppers that
were pointed out to him last. Spicy surprise... Best start
somewhere he guessed... The giggle from the other pony brought
Marked's small smile back as he felt it was nice seeing somepony
seem so excited and happy about what they were doing, though the
mention of the price and this sudden special deal offered both
rose a question and caused him to give a short laugh in light
surprise over the attached compliment.
Marked wasn't one to receive compliments often, living a little
bit on the outskirts of town tended to keep interactions with
other ponies few and far between, and his current confusion over
the other ponies actual gender was making him unsure as to how
to respond. Either way it made him appear a bit bashful for a
moment, his hoof reaching up to adjust his hat without really
noticing it himself as he pulled it a little further down as if
to use it to hide. "Um... So, that's only one bit for one of
each?" Marked asked for clarification, the writer thrown off a
little but trying to recover, "if so then that sounds perfect
for what I'm here for! But... what about those higher up ones?"
What about shut up? Marked scolded himself, part of his brain
now arguing with another over whether curiosity meant it was
worth actually acknowledging what were probably far stronger
peppers for him to risk tasting.

Pepper perked once more, ears twitching. "Those? Those at the
top?" He motioned with his muzzle, as he ended up trotting to
the side a little bit, as if his brain wasn't y'know,
communicating with the legs about how they should stand still
during a sell. "Those are Habaneros! Chocolate Habaneros to be
precise." He said inclining his head playfully, causing that
mane to fall away from his brown eyes. "My grandmother's own
custom pepper...The smoothness of chocolate, interlaced with the
spice of a pepper...It gives Hot Chocolate a whole new meaning!"
He said excitedly, his tail twithcing softly, as he circled
Marked playfully. "It won't melt in your mouth, but it /might/
melt your mouth." He mentioned wisely as he made the joke before
resting to stand beside Marked.
"And yes! One bit, for one of each." He said nodding. "Or one
bit for five, or two for ten!" Really he was selling himself
short, a little but he did not mind, nor was he that great of a
business pony, but when one's cutie mark seemed to revolve
around growing things, it wasn't as if he had a super high
material cost like a pony who's talent was say, grand
architecture or airship building...or train engineering...his
thoughts derailed as he shook his muzzle, his back hoof digging
itno the ground a little shyly as he found himself near Marke,d
he sniffed, playfully, to see what the other pony might smell
like. Bad Pepper, Bad!

Chocolate Habaneros? Well that was different. Marked was a fan
if the treat his coat took its color from, but he'd never heard
of chocolate being spicy before. Did that even go well together?
He assumed the chocolate was bitter since it was grown that way
and hadn't had any milk or extra sugar added, but really he had
no actual idea. Two seconds before hearing the pepper selling
pony explain what those were he would have laughed at the idea
of a chocolate pepper, so for all he knew they could be anything
from bakers unsweetened bitter to brownie double fudge
delicious. He... Really kind of wanted to try those now... the
idea of it possibly being at least a little sweet and like
regular chocolate fooling his brain into trying to forget about
how it was still an actual pepper so as to hopefully satisfy his
sudden sweet tooth.
Distracted by the chocolatey little package of fire that was the
habanero, Marked didn't notice the pony moving away from the
stall and closer to him until he, or she or something, was next
to him and answering his first question. Perfect! He could spare
a few bits and get a whole dozen of assorted peppers to take
home and experiment with in different dishes! That way he'd be
able to keep any necessary milk and what not ready and on hoof
at all times while torturing his taste buds and belly with the
hopes of writing about it later! Marked turned his head to reply
to Pepper, the writer doing so just after the other pony would
have only found the scent of fresh grass from the hill he'd been
laying on all morning. He stuttered a bit when he started
however, as the continued mystery about the other long kept his
confusion up and was starting to lean towards awkward, "I-I
think I'll take that deal of yours. Put me down for three bits
worth of three each... And however much one of those chocolate
ones cost." Just couldn't leave it be, could he? Well, may as
well be thorough...
"I'm not really the best at handling spicy food..." He then
admitted, figuring that the pony selling the stuff could
possibly know of some advice for making sure he didn't go and
blind himself or something, "uh, is there any kind of special
precautions I need to take when handling these? I know some
peppers burn you if you don't wear some kind of protection when
chopping them, so..." Hmm... Well, that brought up another
question... "And is it a bad idea to just eat these raw? Like,
right now if I wanted to?"

Pepper nodded as he began to pack the peppers, first he laid out
some clear wax wrap delicately and picked the peppers from the
packed packaging laying them out three at a time, even three of
the chocolate habaneros. "Actually." He said after doing so, and
tying off the neat bundle which could be carried by mouth, or in
a coveniently deep jacket pocket, "They are all fine to eat raw,
but if you want to prep them in a pile of food, I could always
give you some quick preperation tips." He said, tail swishing
gently as he went off on a tangent. Oh no. "You see, you only
need special protection when handling certian epppers which none
of these are it, though if you'd like I could bring you one and
serve you a slice of it! It's a promise it'll put some dash into
your step!" He said with a soft chucjkle, shaking his muzzle at
his own joke before he delicately took a chocolate habanero, the
thick pepper hanging from it's stem between his teeth before he
offered it to Marked in a 'Go ahead!' kind of way.
Now the problem was how might Marked go about getting the
pepper? He could nab it at the end of the pepper, but what if
he tripped, chomped the entire thing and ended up pushing their
muzzles together? Gasp! But either way, Pepper watched him with
marked patience, still offering the pepper for free, it seemed.
His eyes glitteirng with amusement.
If Marked took the pepper, in any case, The chocolate skin of
the pepper would taste like the kind you found in absolutely
fresh baked brownies, exploring further would reveal the spicy
heat that seemed to have the effect of making the chocolate skin
melt in one's mouth, leaving one with a tongue coated in
semi-solid chocolate with a gentle heat keeping it that way.
Not a four alarm fire kind of hot, but enough to let you know it
was there.

Okay, good, no special prep needed then to eat them, and they
were fine to consume raw, Marked now becoming a bit nervous at
the idea as there was no reason not to pop one or to into his
mouth as a snack for his current research other than his
procrastination born out of not wanting to burn his tongue. The
offer if getting an even stronger pepper was something he wasn't
sure he'd be able to accept, the writer believing he was already
going to be pushing his limits when it came to the peppers he
was getting for so cheap. Seeing the three chocolate habaneros
being bundled up the same as the others, Marked was assuming
they were being thrown in for free along with the rest and began
worrying that he may actually be avoiding paying what they were
actually worth. Three bits for all of this? Surely they were
worth more? Not only that, but Pepper was now offering a
chocolate pepper all by itself seemingly as some kind of free
sample.
Marked went to take the pepper, stepping closer... and then
sitting down so as to use his front hooves to take the spicy
food from the other pony, him being a bit too shy to get any
closer right now. That's it! He was just going to assume that
Pepper was a 'she'. She did call him handsome after all, and her
mane and tail were plenty long enough and stuff for it, so it
seemed a safe enough bet. "Thanks," he said before giving.the
pepper a sniff, him examining it for a few seconds before
reaching his muzzle down to take a very small and hesitant bite
out of its skin. Wow... It really did taste like chocolate! Not
only that, but good chocolate too! Didn't even seem to be very
hot or anything. Marked was confused over how it wasn't spicy,
but the delicious chocolatey flavor was enough to boost his
confidence and push him into taking a much much bigger bite out
of the entire pepper, the stallion eager to give it a full try
after his small taste.
Then it started getting hot. Not just kinda hot, but with his
sensitivity, it was penough to make him start to pant and fan
his tongue with increasing speed as his tongue was coated in
heated chocolate. Uh oh... How far was that other stall again?
"Does it get worse?" Marked asked with some light worry in his
eyes, him caughing a bit from the spiciness of the pepper and
using the hoof that wasn't fanning his tongue to reach for his
notepad, his face starting to turn a shade of red. "I-*cough*-I
probably-*cough*-probably look like a wimp, don't I?" He asked,
pulling out both his notepad and pen to take notes about this as
hos tongue only seemed to start screaming at him more and more.
If they could use actual words instead of signals sent to the
brain? 'You're an idiot! This isn't how we do!' Would have
probably been what they would have said. "How-*cough*-h-*cough
cough*- How do-*cough*- excuse me." The writer pleaded, him just
dropping his note taking tools to trot across the way to find
soemthign to drink, him demanding a glass of their coolest most
soothing liquid as soon as he reached them and slamming down
said drink once it was provided a few seconds later.

Pepper blinked a little bit as the sensitive Stallion seemed to
have problems with the habanero, before Pepper blushed. "I think
It's rather cute." He said playfully when the other turned red,
chuckling softly, However when he dashed off, he would find the
spicy ness stopped when the liquid hit his tongue as if the
spicyness was simply turned..off! Pepper giggled a little
looking at Mark as he looked back to his cart, rolled his
shoulders and carried the package over to Mark. "Here you go."
He said playfully, nudging Marked's neck with his muzzle. "I
apologize if the peppers were too hot, but I hope you enjoyed
them..Just remember~! Practice makes heat tolerance." He said
playfully before he went off back to the cart...Assuming that
Marked's experience with the peppers woudl chase him away..it
happened sometimes..sadly. Pepper tended to assume the worst of
a situation, his tail drooping a little bit as his mind thought
a few depressing thoughts.

A looooooooong and happy sigh of relief followed the drink
Marked had so desperately demanded for then gulped down, the
what that had been embracing his tongue being alleviated and
allowing for his taste buds to relax and stop shouting harsh
expletives at him. He was so enraptured by his relief that the
stallion again didn't notice Pepper until the, assumed mare, was
next to him once again passing along his bundle of peppers and
forcing a bright blush out of the stallion by nudging his neck,
the tint of his cheeks managing to rival the one the pepper had
managed to burn into his features though this one obviously much
less unpleasant.
Marked was unable to form any words as he shyly took his order
of spicy-problems-for-later and scuffed the ground with a hoof
that his eyes firmly locked onto, him letting Pepper walk away
without a comment before starting to get the unshakable feeling
that he was forgetting something. What was it... he still had
his tongue... had gotten his concentrated doses of heat...
Umm... Oh! His stuff! Double oh! Hed forgotten to friggin pay
her!
"Dummy," Marked insulted himself as he ever so gently gave
himself a smack of a facehoof. Standing up and stuffing his
peppers into his now vacant pocket, Marked took off in another
trot back towards Pepper's stand. "I wouldn't say they were too
hot," he said to catch her attention again, him stopping to
retrieve his stuff which he then slipped into his saddle bags
instead of his pepper pocket, "I think I'm just too much of a
softie when it comes to stuff like that." He smiled again, his
blush having died down to a more manageable level that better
blended into his coat as he then rolled his eyes at himself over
not having pulled out his bit pouch when he was just in his
saddle bags. "It was three bits, right?" the writer asked while
he went back to his bags, "you're sure just three for all of
these? Also... that other pepper you were talking about letting
me try... How hot exactly are we talking with that one? After
seeing me deal with that chocolate one, would it even be a good
idea for me to try it?"
