Jewel follows Carri into the house, watching her step as she
walked around the various bits of clutter and debris. For a
house that was being lived in, this place was very dusty and out
of sorts. Hopefully she didn't step on any upturned nails or
scratch herself on the debris. Nothing like getting a bit of
tetanus on the first day out in the real world, though with
Jewel's luck, it wouldn't surprise her. The stairs were nothing
to scoff at either; the creak that came forth as Jewel set a
single hoof on them was practically enough to make her jump a
bit, proceeding with the utmost caution as the creaking followed
her up. The further she went in, the more Jewel wondered if this
was supposed to be some sort of haunted house that was to be
used during Nightmare Night. Creaky stairs, gloomy and dim
lighting, dusty floors... all that was missing was the
atmospheric music and an actor wearing tattered rags and face
paint jumping out and startling her.
The difference between the first floor and the second floor was
enough to make her forget all of that though. It looked so much
cleaner, brighter, friendlier, and... more pink. The only real
thing that Jewel could see wrong with this room was the broken
window, which must be terribly drafty at night, but that was
nothing a heavy set of curtains couldn't fix, hopefully. Walking
over to Carri as she set up one of the folding cots, Jewel
looked over to the larger bed and said, "Well, I suppose I could
help with the renovations, though I don't really know what I'm
doing when it comes to that, nor do I know how to properly use
any tools. Is that your bed over there?"

Carri give a quick few nods, "Yep! Once Brash let me know I
could stay I flew all of my stuff in from Canterlot." Carri
looks around making sure her room is clean enough for company,
"Brash said she only wants the basement, so you could even do
what you want with the first floor. I was thinking I could run a
delivery business from there but I wouldn't know how to set that
up."

Jewel looked back at the bed, then back to Carri, a little
surprised. For some reason, she had a feeling that Brash was the
one who held claim to this bed while Carri was the one left to
sleep on the cots. Of course, that didn't stop the basement
suite that Brash apparently had all to herself from being just
as good if not better than this one. Perhaps Brash wasn't as
harsh of an employer as Jewel thought she would be, though there
was still a bit of an issue that clawed at the back of her mind,
and it made Jewel want to bring it up as Carri said that she
wanted to run a delivery service out of the first floor of the
building, "A delivery business? That sounds like it would be
something you would be good at." Ironic, given the fact Jewel
nearly suffered a heart attack just meeting Carri, "Umm... I'm
sorry if this is a little bit off topic, but... how old are you
and Brash? You both seem a little young to be running a
business, much less hiring ponies."

"Oh, well, I asked Brash but she said it's rude to ask a pony's
age. I know you weren't trying to be rude but... I mean, she
doesn't have her cutie mark, but she said she's done with
school. I'm just out of school myself and Brash gave me my first
job." Avoiding actually answering the question Carri's mind
drifts to another topic, "I got my cutie mark for lifting heavy
stuff!" Carri shows off her winged anvil mark, "I'm not very
fast but I think I can lift a whole ton!"

Jewel, seeming to not mind the avoiding of the question,
proceeded to admire Carri's cutie mark. The answer Carri gave
was probably good enough for her; they were just out of school,
so they couldn't have been as young as Jewel previously thought.
Looking at Carri's mark, Jewel nodded as Carri explained that it
was for lifting heavy things while flying. She definitely gave a
very good demonstration on the lifting part before, but holding
onto it and landing with it were things that Jewel could
probably suggest the need to be worked on. After Carri's
demonstration, Jewel looked back at her own, which was a cut
gem. It wasn't for anything near as impressive as Carri's but it
was there. "I guess that would explain why you were carrying so
much for Brash when you almost... umm... dropped in on me. How
did you ever find out that you were good at heavy lifting?"

"Oh, my family moved around a lot. They'd usually tell me what
to take into our new homes, but when we got the place in
Canterlot one of our neighbors talked to them for a while so I
decided to get started by myself. I didn't even realize I'd
gotten everything into the house by the time they were back,
even the large furniture and crates full of books."
Carri takes a breath to start a new topic but is interrupted by
loud hoofsteps in the floor below followed by a slam of a door.
She adopts a slight look of fear as she realizes something has
likely gone wrong.

Jewel looks at Carri's new expression of fear with her own look
of confusion. One second, she was explaining how she got her
cutie mark, but now she was quiet. Did it have something to do
with the fact that the sound of hoofsteps could be heard below,
as well as the sound of the door closing? Certainly that could
only mean one thing, but with Carri's new expression, she wasn't
so sure. "What's the matter? Is Brash back?"

"Brash never comes in loudly... and she was supposed to be with
Dais the whole day! I think something went wrong, and if
something went wrong then maybe Brash didn't become friends with
Dais, which means he's gonna try and take her away!" Having put
the pieces together as she spoke she jumps up and past Jewel,
spreading her wings to swoop down the stairs and knocks on the
trapdoor waiting for a response that doesn't seem to come.
Instead the sound of metal working with a hammer develops from
below.

"Wait, Dais can just take Brash away?" Jewel asked as Carri
swooped away, a look of bewilderment on her face as Carri
suggested that. Dais didn't seem like the kind of pony who would
go about taking other ponies away from anyone, but then again,
Jewel didn't exactly get to know Dais while he was talking to
her, and he never really seemed to get to know her either.
Perhaps he was more concerned with whatever it was that Brash
was doing in this house. They both did kind of sound like they
were in some sort of discussion as Jewel stood around as she was
told to do.
Following Carri down to the trapdoor, pretty believing in what
Carri told her at this point, Jewel decided to try pushing open
the trapdoor slowly, asking in a barely audible tone, "H-hello?
Who's there?"

"Well, I dunno, can he?" Carri asks, looking a bit worried at
Jewel's attempt to enter the basement.
The trapdoor snaps open inward suddenly as Brash unlocks it in
tandem with Jewel's push. "Get down here, I have a plan!" Brash
barks, beckoning the two down the ladder into her basement.
Dimly lit by a cast iron oven, workbenches line the walls and a
wire frame pony with Jewel's measurements written on a piece of
parchment taped to it stands at the center. Bits of metal and
various tools are spread across the floor yet there doesn't seem
to be any dust amongst the mess.
Brash retrieves a piece of parchment from a bag and begins
writing on it, assuming Jewel followed she begins to speak,
"Carri I'm writing you a list of objectives I expect to be
complete by nightfall. And Stand Still, I've got a more mobile
job for you, I need you to conduct a fake census across
Ponyville and report back to me all the houses that get no
response when you knock." Brash grabs a rolled up parchment,
swivels around hands Carri the list and to Jewel the parchment,
which once unraveled one would find a map of Ponyville.
Carri happily takes the list and becomes absorbed in reading.
