Dais smiled broadly and shrugged. "Nice to meet you too Brash"
he said calmly yet cheerily "Did you just say nopony lives here?
Awesome! I know some homeless ponies who could use some
abandoned empty houses. Don't you worry, folks, I'll have these
homes filled with ponies again in no time! A little cleaning up
and they'll be good as new. You're right, I should head off
though, this book on the Cartographical History of Ponyville
needs some serious reading. Good luck with your secret project.
See ya later Jewel. Take care!"
With that he began strolling away happily.

Brash looks to Dais, an idea quickly takes shape and she calls
out, "Tell them to only use the first floor!"
Brash smirks to herself as she looks back to Jewel, "A homeless
       shelter, perfect cover story."
It doesn't dawn on her that he had mentioned her project.

Dais stops, his eyes narrowing. "Why?" he asks without turning
around "What's on the other floors?"

       really any of your business?"

"Yes!" said Dais emphatically. With that he spun around and
started walking straight towards Brash at a steady pace, staring
       her down the whole time.
"If the upper floors are structurally unsound that could cause
the lower floors to collapse under their weight" he lectured,
his tone having changed from cheery to something more serious
"For the safety of all occupants, I must insist the upper floors
are thoroughly inspected and renovated as necessary. Having a
larger homeless shelter is also self-evidently superior to
having one spanning but a single floor. Ponies who may be
stakeholders in those upper floors, depending on their contents,
may further launch objections to the building of a homeless
shelter on their ground floor. Besides that, I'm also the
mayoral assistant who validates all of the tax returns, so it's
my duty to know what's going on in each and every property in
Ponyville. More generally, if there are clandestine operations
of an illicit nature happening in Ponyville, then as both a
concerned resident and a government official I have a duty to
uncover and report it. So I'm completely convinced it is my
business to know exactly what's going on in those upper floors."
He stopped about a nose away from Brash, staring down at the
filly who was considerably smaller than him. "Got that, Mrs
Brash?" he asked, the usual happiness in his voice returning "I
don't really mean to impose, it's just an important duty I have,
that's all. We can still be friends, right?"

Brash's posture and glare remain unchanged as Dais approaches,
and through his lecture she restrains a yawn causing it to come
out more like a grumble. "'Still be' implies we were friends.
Look, Carri and Snake Charmer are completely under-" Brash stops
herself from saying 'My hoof'. "Eh, they're in agreement with
any of my choices in regards to this particular living space."
"You can take Carri there and inspect both floors. I on the
other hoof have business here, so if you wouldn't mind." Brash
turns away from Dais and back to Jewel.

"Oh, so you do live here?" said Dais, while strolling away again
casually "I'll come back later today with some qualified
building inspectors. Why did you say nopony lives here then?
       You're not nopony, Brash, you're a very special ... wait a
       moment."
The beginnings of tears began to well up in Dais' eyes. "Did
you... did you just imply you don't want to be friends with me?
       HOW COULD YOU!?"
And with that Dais dashed back to the park, making loud sobbing
       noises and dropping his book.

Carri is momentarily stunned at the sight of Dais suddenly
sobbing, but a sense of duty overtakes her as she sees the book
drop. Carri takes off and grabs the book, looking up to see Dais
rounding the corner back to the park. Carri turns back to Brash,
wanting to ask if there's anything she still needed, but seeing
her focused on Jewel it might not be best to disturb her.
Carri moves to catch up to Dais on her slow wings.
(Start a new thread for this, Dais.)

Jewel did her best to smile for Brash when she was introduced to
both her and Dais. It was the key to a good first impression
right? Smiling to your potential employer? Of course, that
attempt at a good first impression faded away as soon as she was
introduced, or at least attempted to be introduced, what with
the forgetting of Jewel's name and all. After this, Jewel just
resumed looking at the floor, sighing quietly as she waited for
what she could assume to be the inevitable order for her to
leave the premises. Perhaps she should try harder to make
herself less forgettable, maybe make herself be more cheery or
active so that ponies at least had something that was worth
remembering her, or even talking to her.
It didn't even seem that a name would be necessary as Brash
already made her an offer. Wasn't that just fantastic? Ten bits
to stand around all day? Of course, she had no idea what a 'good
paying' job was supposed to be, but ten bits an hour was
definitely more than she was earning now. As good as it sounded
though, she couldn't help but get the feeling that there was
more to just her standing around that she wasn't being let in
       on.
Nevertheless, she stood around, even as Dais and everyone walked
away before she could, leaving her to kick at a nearby dust
bunny drifting by until Brash came back. When she did, Jewel
spoke up meekly, "Umm... I guess it's something I can do. But
may I ask, uh, why do you need me to just stand around?"

Brash had quickly dashed into the house and returned with a
measuring tape and a small bundle of five bits. Dropping the
bits in front of Jewel, "Simply put, I'm making something and
you look to be just the right shape to try and emulate. Now
stand still!" Brash begins throwing and tightening the measuring
tape around Jewel's legs and body. It takes barely more than a
minute for Brash to finish, "I'll get the rest myself." Brash
considers what she can do with a pony willing to stand around
for bits as she returns to Jewel's front. "What else can you
       do?"
