"Oh, you both can get all the small pieces and I'll grab this
big one." Carri gestures to the big chunk of smashed copper
mess, "I think we can get all of it with magic and saddlebags!"
She declares.
Carri takes off and makes a long turn to the smashed copper;
Landing on it and grabbing hold she lifts it a few feet off the
ground with ease and waits for the other two while coins and
utensils fall off her cargo. It's at this point she considers
the schedule of the two, "Oh, it isn't far, it'd probably not
take as long as looking for a box to just have some help
carrying everything, if that's alright."

Dais yawned a little as Carri spoke, but kept himself composed
so as not to appear rude. Every so often he shuffled a little to
keep the heavy old book on his back balanced. "No problem" he
said, absentmindedly activating his horn. He was going to pick
up all of the remaining metal with his magic, but then,
remembering Jewel, he left a few of the smaller pieces for her
saddlebag. His eyes turned back to the young mare. Something
about her wasn't quite right. He couldn't tell what, but it made
him uneasy. Perhaps if I keep up the conversation for a bit I'll
learn something, thought Dais to himself.
"Nice saddle bag by the way, ummm... whatever you said your
errr... pardon me, have I even introduced myself?" Dais
continued with an uncharacteristic stutter "I'm a mayoral
assistant, and there's a special policy where we can get leave
to help ponies in sincere need, so you won't need to worry about
my schedule. This sort of stuff is practically on the job
description."
With that he began strolling in the direction of Carri's lead
"So what do you two do?"

Jewel went about picking up the few pieces that had been left
behind, placing them in the saddlebags that were on her back.
For a few seconds, she wondered why these particular pieces were
being left behind, seeing as the unicorn had easily lifted them
before, but decided not to think about it and focus on the task
at hoof. Maybe levitating all of that was tiring? She didn't
know, she was no unicorn. She only hoped that the few pieces of
blank paper that she had wouldn't be ruined by the bits of scrap
that were being put in there. For as little experience that she
had in writing resumes, she could probably guess that she may as
well not try to submit one on dirty paper.
She looks up once more as Dais started talking to her, at least
she assumed it was her since she was the one carrying the
saddlebags--seems to be what she was good for right now. At
Dais' question, she only nodded. Of course he has introduced
himself, though not to the extent of giving any fancy titles
away at the same time. "... Jewel..." she responded to his
stuttering around asking whatever her name was. In response to
his second question, she had to take some time to actually
figure out what she should say. She didn't really do anything
yet other than exist. She had no friends to speak of, no
hobbies, and no real idea of what she wanted to do with herself.
"I'm... umm... unemployed. Being a mayoral assistant sounds nice
though, helping everypony with what they need help with...
and... yeah." She trailed off and looked back at the ground,
resigning to following after Carri, wherever she was planning on
taking them.

Carri steadily moves towards the residential area of town,
making sure the others can comfortably walk along with her.
"I'm a delivery mare!" Carri announces, "Or at least that's what
I'm aiming to be, right now I work for Brash, lifting her heavy
stuff around." Carri gasps, "I should introduce you two when we
get there! Should be just down that street there." Carri
relieves a hoof from her burden to point, nearly losing all her
grip in the process, she drops a foot and latches back on
hastily, nearly swerving the hunk of metal into a building.
Back to a steady flight, Carri puts on a smile and continues
forward.

Dais continued strolling down the street Carri indicated,
expression still happy. He was particularly glad to know that
Jewel's problem just seemed to be a layoff. He was certainly
very impressed with how well Carri was handling herself.
"Huh, tough time to be unemployed" remarked Dais "Oh well. I
sure hope you've got an inexpensive place to stay, bits for your
food, lots of caring friends, a polished CV, good references
from your last job, and above all, most importantly, a
supportive family. I always hear in my office about ponies
who've had problems for the rest of their lives because they
couldn't break into the job market when they were still young.
You'd be surprised, though, how strong the correlation is
between something as simple as having good parents and a steady
job. I'm sure you'll be back in business in no time. You know
where my office is if you ever need help."

Jewel flinched as Carri nearly swerved into a building, hoping
that she would be able to at least get to where she was going
without crashing and making anymore loud noises. The idea of
going to see this Brash that Carri worked for was not something
that Jewel really agreed with, given just how uncomfortable she
was already, but she had no choice now, did she? She was already
helping carry whatever this salvage was meant for, so that would
be what she was stuck doing for the time. With any luck, she'll
be able to drop this off, say hi for a while, and then just
slink into the familiar background and take care of the things
that she needed to do.
With every remark that Dais made however, her gaze lowered a
little more to the ground, the thick feeling of melancholy
seeming to weigh her down with each little thing that he added
onto his sentence. Inexpensive place to stay? Unless there was a
fee for living outside or in a box, she certainly had that
covered. Bits for food? Maybe one light snack, but other than
that, she would have to scrounge for what she could. Caring
friends? What friends she did make back in the orphanage when
she was young were adopted long ago, and never seen again. Just
thinking about them and how lucky they were was a pain in
itself. A polished seevee? She didn't even know what that was
let alone how to care for one. Job references? She had no job
before.
The last one too, the supporting family, had hit her the
hardest. Not only was it a reminder about what she could never
have, but it did nothing for her hope of actually getting on her
hooves in this town. Having a good job is correlational to
having a supportive family. So did that mean that having no
family meant that she was doomed to have no job? It certainly
sounded about right wouldn't it? A fitting resolution to the
life of the lonely child that was kicked out of the orphanage
for getting too old and wasting space. As she thought about
this, she didn't even realize that she was starting to tremble
slightly. Looking away and taking a deep breath, she answered
Dais quietly, "Yeah... that's all anyone needs, right? And...
I'm afraid I don't know where anything is in this town. Sorry."
She looked ahead as she continued to follow behind Carri.

The house at the end of the street sits in a horrid condition,
cracks throughout the building, shattered windows, an arc made
of metal beams where the door should be. "Just here." Carri says
as she flies ahead and drops the metal chunk in front of the
place with a loud crash, causing most of it to fall apart.
She lands and waits for the two to get closer, then looking at
Jewel, "Ya know if you don't have anything else ta do, Brash's
project could use some more help. She always says, 'This would
go a lot faster if less ponies weren't...' uh... well she made
it sound like more ponies means faster results!" Carri nods,
then stares into space still trying to recollect what exactly
Brash had said.

"Here you go!" said Dais, cheerily thrusting a map into Jewel's
hooves that he got seemingly from nowhere. He thrust it so
quickly that he almost lost his balance with the book on his
back, but soon recovered after it wobbled a few times.
The map, drawn on a worn old piece of parchment, was a simple
stylistic representation of Ponyville, with each building's
likeness carefully traced using fine ink lines. Two red crosses
were roughly painted over the map, one labelled "you are here"
and the other "Dais' office (first door on right)", in rushed
script. The whole thing looked and felt like a museum piece,
although the map was in fact accurate. It was so fragile, a
slight breeze passed by and tore off several small fragments
from the edges.
"See, didn't I tell you?" continued Dais with a smile and a wink
"If you need help, I'm your pony. Not that I expect you'll be
needing much. You look like a winning pony to me."
With that Dais strolled over to the pile Carri started and
deposited the metal he was carrying. "So anyway, where is this
Brash? I have got some reading to do I'm afraid, but I would be
interested to meet her to find out what this project's all
about."

Jewel watched the bright and cheerful buildings around her
suddenly take a turn for the worse with the sight of the house
in front of her. Sure, the orphanage wasn't that well maintained
most of the time; she could remember a crack in the lunch room
wall where she sat that would let in a cold draft constantly.
This place was missing windows, a door, it had cracks in the
walls... she couldn't help but wonder why this place was so
neglected when there were ponies out there that would give
anything to have a roof over their head, including herself. She
didn't have much time to contemplate however, as a map was
suddenly thrust into her hooves. Where did this map even come
from? Why did she need to look at it? Why was it so in tune to
where she was at this very moment? Surely he can't have drawn a
map just in the nick of time... could he?
Nevertheless, the map would certainly be useful in helping her
find her way around town, regardless of the fact that it was
also directing her to Dais' office, and who knows? Maybe she
would eventually end up paying him a visit should her luck take
a turn for the worst, "Th-thank you, sir. I... I'll use this map
as best as I can." She wasn't so sure about her being a winning
pony, in fact, she was very certain that that was not at all the
case. If she was winning, then why was she such a loser, like
the other children called her? Putting that thought out of her
mind, she looked back to Carri at the mention of what Jewel
could only guess sounded like a job. Maybe things were looking
up after all and a job wouldn't be so hard to get, "That sounds
good, but umm... I guess what I'm asking is if Brash would be
okay with hiring somepony like me. She sounds like she has a lot
of high expectations."

Brash appears from the house due to the ruckus outside, kicking
a copper spoon out of her way and climbing over the rest of the
metal. She spots the two other ponies and runs over to Carri,
"You've been followed! Circle back around and try to lose them!"
She looks to Dais, "Nopony lives here! Go away!"
"This is Brash." Carri interjects as if nothing happened. She
then looks to Brash and points a hoof to Jewel, "Brash, this
is..." She gasps, a look of horror dawns upon her face as she's
forgotten Jewel's name and she freezes up.
"Yeah good to meet'cha." Brash approaches Jewel, "If my, uh,
friend here is introducing us, that must mean you're of use to
me." Brash circles Jewel with a discerning eye. "I'll pay you
ten bits an hour to stand aroun' and do nothin'. I'll need my
measuring tape." Brash stops in front of Jewel and waits for
Carri to get her measuring tape.
Carri didn't pick up on Brash's order as she calms down and
waits for Jewel's answer.
