Re: Burning the Midnight Oil
By: Gladius Date: August 9, 2014, 10:55 pm

"Farewell, Princess," Gleam said as Luna left, him turning away
from his work so as to give a bow of his head to the departing
alicorn as was customary. What wasn't customary, and was
immediately noticed by Gleam, was the fact that Gladius seemed
to not be paying any attention in the least at this point, him
just staring off at some corner of the room and being lost in
his own little world within his head. Very unamused by this
blatant disrespect, Gleam lit his horn up and gave the guard a
telekinetic smack against the back of his helmet, Gladius giving
a small gasp of surprise as his helmet was knocked halfway
around his head and ended up covering half of his face.
"Get your head out of the clouds, colt!" Gleam scolded, Gladius
darting his head back and forth in confusion before figuring out
why he couldn't see very well anymore and adjusted his helmet,
"they call you a guard? I wouldn't trust you to guard a cookie
jar from a group of fillies assaulting you with puppy dog eyes."
Gladius rolled his eyes then looked over at Windy and then
glancing around the room with some evident and further
confusion. Raising an eyebrow, he looked back to Windy as the
smaller pegasus tapped out a message.
"Huh? Leave? Nah, don't be silly. Er... the Princess gave you
permission to use the telescope right?" he half pointed out and
half asked.
"You break you buy it," Gleam warned as he finished up what he
was doing with the journals and what not, "... buy the farm that
is." he tagged on with a slight growl to his voice. With Luna's
permission having been given, Gleam had no authority to turn
away Woodwind and keep him from being able to use the very
large, very expensive and very very old telescope within the
observatory, but that didn't mean he would tolerate seeing it
get damaged or... finger painted on or... covered in chocolate,
or whatever Woodwind might do to it with his grubby little
sticky hooves...
"Uh... right then! Go for it and give that big thing a whirl!"
Gladius encouraged, nudging Windy towards the telescope with a
hoof.

Woodwind fidgets uncomfortably for several moments, his gaze
going from the observatory's exit to the telescope and back
again. He jumps at the sound of Gladius' helmet being hit, and
looks around at the guard concernedly, then at Gleam when the
older pony starts reprimanding Gladius. He looks back at
Gladius, giving a nod to the guard's question, though his ears
fold back at Gleam's comment. He stands up, glancing over at the
old unicorn, who's still using his notebook. He turns back to
Gladius for a moment, to say that he thinks he should leave
after all when the guard starts pushing him lightly toward the
telescope, encouraging him to go use it. After a couple seconds
of nudging, Woodwind makes his way over to the big telescope,
though he doesn't do anything with it right away. He's somewhat
wary about actually starting to use it, not only because he'll
have to find the meteor by memory, but because of Gleam's threat
should anything happen to it. With a final glance back at the
other two ponies, Woodwind gingerly steps up to the telescope. I
takes him a couple minutes to get a handle on how to adjust the
telescope's view, the pegasus being used to a much smaller one.
It takes him another minute or so to find his discovery in the
night sky. A small smile appears on his face as he peers through
the lens at the shining dot of light that was the meteor he'd
found. For a while, he just examines that, the smile slowly
growing over time as he moves on to looking at other things of
note in the sky. For a while he does this, changing the view to
whatever comes to mind and completely losing track of time. By
the time he realizes he's been at it for a while, it's been the
better part of an hour. He glances around, somewhat surprised to
find the other two ponies still there, and his smile drops as he
realizes they've been waiting for him. Sheepishy, he walks over
toward Gleam, intending to get his notebook back before letting
Gladius know he's finished, but he slows when he approaches the
old unicorn. He's surely done by now, but Woodwind has made him
wait for so long by now he's sure the scholar will be very angry
with him. He stops a couple feet away. "I'm done now, can I have
my notebook back please?"

Angry was one word for it.
Gleam had indeed finished with the notebook he'd taken from
Woodwind for the sake of recording everything in regards to the
meteor the younger pony had discovered which had of course left
him with nothing else to do as he couldn't bring himself to
leave the observatory and return to his potions without making
darn sure that the youngster didn't stick gum on the lens of the
telescope he had taken his sweet time in using. Gleam had more
patience than a mountain had time though if ever he decided to,
so instead of try and cut the kid off from using the telescope
and rushing him out of the room, Gleam obeyed the wishes of the
princess and allowed him all the time he needed to adjust
everything in ways he didn't approve of.
This didn't mean he couldn't glare however, something he kept up
until Woodwind was pestering him for his notebook. Silently and
without breaking his harsh gaze, Gleam levitated the notebook
back to Woodwind, him remaining quiet for a few seconds
afterwards before using his magic to bop the helmet of Gladius
with a ruler since he'd returned to staring at nothing.
"Your discovery has been noted," said Gleam, it almost being
possible to feel how fed up he had become, "you both have my
permission to leave." with that the elderly unicorn levitated a
small piece of cloth from the table he'd been working at and
carried it with him over to the telscope where he started to
polish, clean and readjust it to "fix" the "damage" Woodwind had
causes by merely touching it.
Gladius, after a moment or two of confused head darting and
readjusting of his helmet, eventually remembered where he was
again and shot Gleam an annoyed look from behind his back before
turning back to Windy.
"Welp, guess that's that then. I dunno how this kind of thing
works, but I'm guessing they're just going to look into the
meteor themselves now and credit you? I dunno. But, anyway, it's
getting late around here and that guy seems ready to transform
someone into kindling. Do you have everything you came with?"

Woodwind shrinks down under Gleam's glare, hunching over wit his
ears pulled back against his head. He takes the notebook and
makes a hasty retreat toward Gladius, ducking around the guard's
side to put him between Gleam and himself. He nods at Gladius'
question as he watches Gleam head over to check the telescope,
though Woodwind had been very careful with it. He flips the
notebook to a blank page and scrawl out "Yeah, unless him
writing it down was enough verification." He shifts the
telescope folded on his back slightly, and nods again. He was
definitely ready to get out of here. He turns to head for the
door, occasionally looking back over his shoulder at Gleam until
they're out of the room, when he finally relaxes a little.
"Thank you for bringing me here." He stops to write.

Regardless of how well Woodwind avoided damaging, dirtying or
otherwise messing up the telescope, Gleam found excuses to
grumble anyway, making the tiniest of adjustments here and
polishes there to fix whatever minute issues he discovered.
Gladius gives a shrug at the whole deal, still not being any
kind of expert, then leads Windy out of the room, pausing to
address his newly written note with a wave of his hoof.
'Eh, it was nothing," he told the smaller pegasus, turning and
continuing to lead the way out of the castle, "all I did was
walk you here and pass along word that you'd found something.
You were the one that made the discovery and even managed to
impress the princess with it, which I'm sure if you'd sent
notice to the castle yourself would have led to the same thing
tonight anyway."
It took them a few minutes of walking to navigate back to the
entrance of the giant structure serving as the home of the Royal
Sister's, the guards again seeming to give Gladius a bit extra
room when passing him than was normal whenever they were forced
to share the hallway.
Once back at the gates, Gladius turned back to Windy, "Well, I'd
say this was a pretty full night. Meteors, princesses, angering
a pony that's probably going to look into a way to curse our
dreams for the rest of our lives. Will you be okay making it
back to your place from here by yourself, or would you like an
escort? I've got nothing else to do tonight so I wouldn't mind
an excuse to stretch my legs."

Woodwind simply shakes his head at Gladius' belief that things
would have been the same even if the guard hadn't brought him
here. Even if he had been able to work up the courage to tell
anypony about it, he doubts they'd even give the time of day to
some random pegasus. He sticks close to Gladius' side while
they're heading out of the castle, glad that the other guards
are keeping their distance. He does wonder why they're doing
this, but eventually just figures they don't feel the need to
bother somepony who's being escorted by another guard. He takes
a slow, deep breath once they reach the gates, nodding slightly
in agreement with the larger pegasus. It had indeed been quite a
night, and he was starting to get pretty tired. Not to mention
he was still jumpy and nervous from the encounters with Luna and
Gleam. "I'd like it if you came with me." He writes out, nodding
again. He wouldn't normally need the escort, darkness being
something that doesn't really scare him, but having some company
on his way home would be nice.

"Then lead the way!" said Gladius with a wave of his hoof,
"Unless you would rather I did and accidentally take us back to
my place instead due to it being 'home' for me." Gladius would
fall in step with Windy as the smaller pegasus would lead the
way towards his house, the guard trying his best to make small
talk along the way while attempting to stick to yes or no
questions for most of the time so as to not force Woodwind to
have to stop in order to respond. He touched on things he
figured Windy would enjoy talking about, such as more questions
about the night sky that Gladius was often curious about but
never seemed to remember whenever he was left with the spare
time required to learn the answer for himself.
"Is this yours?" Gladius asked as they seemed to be heading for
a particular building he was guessing may be Woodwind's house,
"Not a bad looking place. It is yours, right? Or did I just
compliment a complete and totally random stranger on their
home?"

Woodwind gives a nod to Gladius, taking the lead as they leave
the castle and head off into the darkened streets. He doesn't
quite head directly home, despite his fatigue. Instead he
chooses a more winding route, allowing him to further calm down
and to enjoy the night. Gladius' presence helps there, the small
talk both keeping his mind off his earlier stress and also
filling the silence, even if the larger pegasus tried to keep
the questions simple. Eventually though they make their way to
the street Woodwind lives on, the large houses standing with
dark windows due to the late hour. Woodwind nods when Gladius
points out a particular home, and starts leading the way up to
the porch. Once there he stops and turns to face Gladius,
pulling his notebook back out. 'Thank you for taking me to the
castle, and walking me home." He writes, smiling at the guard.

Gladius gave a low whistle as they approached the porch of the
large three story house, impressed over the size of the spacious
home and wondering if Windy was a lot more wealthy than he first
seemed.
"Quite the place you've got here," he began, craning his neck to
see the roof and sweeping the side of the building with his eyes
to count the number of windows, "This all yours or do you share
it with some roommates? I bet mares just knife fight each other
for your attention if you keep this entire place to yourself."
he chuckled, giving the smaller pegasus a light and playful bump
on the shoulder with his hoof before looking down at the note
Windy had written.
"Aw, it's no big deal," he again brushed it off with a shrug,
"was happy to help, though, and it was a lot more fun then
whatever I would have ended up doing instead had I not bumped
into you. Anyway, I guess I'll let you get some rest. Wouldn't
surprise me if you might feel a touch drained after all of that.
Have a good night!" Gladius wished as he turned to leave, giving
a small half wave half casual salute, "Maybe I'll see you around
the park again, eh? Or I might just run into you in the castle
when they totally invite you back? Hehe. See you later!"

Woodwind blushes slightly in embarrassment as Gladius comments
on the house's size. He shakes his head, though the comment
about mares fighting over him gets a small laugh out of him,
though maybe not for the reason Gladius thinks. 'I live here
with my parents, twin sister, and three younger siblings.' He
answers, showing the notebook to the guard again. The mute
pegasus nods, smiling, as Gladius turns to walk away. He really
was feeling pretty drained by now, the long walk home, though
nice, had only made him more tired. He waves farewell to Gladius
as the guard leaves, and then turns to go inside the house.
Despite the stress of meeting both Gleam and the princess, he's
glad he went to the castle, and he'd enjoy meeting Gladius again
sometime. He does go to that park fairly often at night, so it's
likely they'll see each other again there.
