Burning the Midnight Oil
By: Gladius Date: March 31, 2014, 10:03 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
"So, have you ever been to the castle in the past?" Gladius
asked Woodwind as he led the stallion past the gates of
Canterlot Castle then inside, the guard having wanted to wait
until they were actually there to ask on the chance that this
was indeed the first time the star gazer had been so close to
the home of the Princesses. It was nothing particularly special
to him seeing how he walled around the place everyday for his
job, but the reaction from civilians new to the impressive and
beautifully built structure was still something that Gladius
enjoyed witnessing. "Ever sneak in before?" He added playfully
as he began to navigate the halls in search of the stallion they
were after.

Woodwind stares up at the castle in wonder as him and Gladius
walk through the gates, barely registering the guard's question.
he comes to a stop in the castle doorways, pausing to marvel at
the entrance hall. After a few seconds of looking around, his
attention returns to his companion, and he shakes his head
sheepishly. 'I've never been here before.' He taps out, then
walks a few steps inside. 'I didn't think it would be this
amazing.' He follows after Gladius, keeping his thoughts to
himself as thy navigate the halls, the brown pegasus peering
down side hallways on the chance for a glimpse at one of the
princesses.

Yeah, Gladius guessed as much from how Woodwind had been looking
at everything around them. New to the castle. The way he was
staring st everything brought a smile to the guards face just as
it always did. "Then you're in for a treat I'll wager," he said
as they rounded a corner and began to pass through a wider hall
with a number of sculptures lined up on display down its center,
"stained glass windows, the gardens, highly valuable paintings
and sculptures Kiel these ones were passing right now. Even
after we find out what we can to learn we could make a quick
round of the grounds to check some stuff out if you'd like? Not
everyday an asteroid let's you explore the seat of our
government."
Another guard came walking down the hall towards them, a drowsy
looking stallion either recently relieved of his shift or only
just starting from what Gladius could tell. The other guard
seeming to blink when he saw them though, then divert his course
so as to use the opposite side of the sculptures to continue on
and nor have to pass right by them, q gap between two displays
serving as enough for him to make his small escape.
"... Were headed for the library right now..." Gladius spoke up
again after a small and almost entirely silent sigh, "stallion
were looking for should be there, and even if he isn't we can
head instead to the observatory and check for any ponies who are
doing as you were at the park."

Woodwind continues to look around him as he walks alongside
Gladius, admiring the hallways and decorations they pass. As
they enter the sculpture filled hallway the brown pegasus steps
a little way away from his companion, getting a closer look at
any statue that catches his interest while his ears remain
pointed in Gladius' direction. Seeing the rest of the castle
after they got their questions answered was definitely something
he'd be interested, and he look back at Gladius and gives a
happy nod at the suggestion before trotting back over to
continue following him. He pays little mind to the other guard
moving to the other row, figuring the stallion just didn't want
to get in the way or something similar. He glances over at
Gladius after noting the slight pause, and looks back at the
other guard for a moment as they leave the sculpture-filled
hallway. For a few seconds he wonders what that could have been
about, but dismisses it as possibly being some small personal
problem between them. He perks up at the mention of the
observatory, very much interested in seeing that and even daring
to hope he'd get to use the equipment. 'Are we close?' He stops
to ask, glancing around at the hallway and having no idea where
they might be in relation to the rest of the castle.

"Should be, unless that Discord character went and switched the
layout around again," Gladius replied as they rounded another
corner and left the statues behind, "just down this hall we will
either find the Royal Library, or the bathroom of the B.J.
Buckaroo saloon over in Appleloosa. If you get a chance to visit
the library during the day shift, go ahead and see if you can
ask any of the regulars about that. Get quite the story about
how one second their heading for the doors to leave the room
with a few books only to find themselves in the middle of a
rowdy and half buzzed crowd getting physical." He glanced back
at the pony following, the guard now wearing his friendly smile
again as he ignored the actions of the earlier guard.
True to his word, it didn't take much longer to find the Royal
Library, it, thankfully, not being linked to a different
location in the country through some means that made no sense
and instead being right where it belonged, the guards on duty
doing their darndest to make sure nopony could tell how tired
they were as they stood around watching ponies come and go as
they studied their fields of interest. Gladius slowed down then
stopped as they neared the entrance, the pegasus gesturing for
Woodwind to do the same as he angled his ears to listen in on
the normally rather quiet activities within the beyond the large
doors leading to the archive of knowledge. "If the one were
looking for is indeed here..." He began, voice quieter so as to
not interfere with his listening, "then it should only be a
matter of time before somepony does something that will get him
to let us know for sure if he's still awake. Won't even need to
ask the other guards..." That last part wad more to himself as
such an idea didn't seem very pleasant to him.
A few moments passed of nothing happening, the small and almost
silent sounds of hooves against the library floor, muffled by
ambient magic put in place that was meant to keep it from
disturbing anypony reading inside, being the only noise one
could pick up on. Until...
"Agh! Getahttahere, you clumsy pile of muscle and metal!" Until
a voice broke the silence from further inside the library,
"Well? I shouldn't have to repeat myself since what I just said
is probably still echoing through that hollow skull of yours!
Getahttahere and maybe I won't make you spend the rest of the
week trying to learn how to walk, speak and fly backwards! You
ever try to eat a meal when everything you try to do is flipped
around?"
"That sounds like him," Gladius told Windy, another guard
walking out of the library a few seconds later with an annoyed
expression as he headed off down the other end of the hall, "and
he sounds like he's in a good mood for once too." A chuckle
later and Gladius motioned for Windy to follow again as he went
to enter the library proper, his path being blocked by one of
the guards at the door as Gladius was halted by a raised hoof
followed by a questioning turn of the other guards eyes to
Windy. "He's with me." Gladius clarified to try and move this
along, apparently being ignored as the other stallion only
continued to watch Windy.
"What's your reason for visiting the library, citizen?" He
asked, face as stony as any guards is normally assumed to be.

Woodwind takes a nervous glance around at the mention of
Discord, not in any mood to meet the Spirit of Chaos, even if he
was supposedly reformed. Luckily the draconequus isn't anywhere
to be found, and the hallways lead where they're supposed to. It
does sound like an interesting story though, and if he does
happen to find himself here during the day sometime he'll ask
about it.
The brown pegasus looks around as they enter the library,
letting Gladius listen for the pony they were looking for, not
really knowing if he'd be able to identify them despite the
guard's claim of how easy it will be. He traces his eyes over
the books he can see, both new and old and covering just about
any subject you can think of, all neatly arranged in high
shelves. He hopes he gets a chance to look at the astronomy
sections, the Royal Library undoubtedly having things he hasn't
read before.
His ears perk up at the rather angry voice that suddenly comes
from further in and Woodwind takes a slightly nervous glance at
Gladius, hoping that this is a different stallion than the one
they're looking for. No such luck though, and Woodwind follows
behind Gladius, now a bit less eager to meet with this pony even
if he could answer his question. His nerves grow even more as
they're stopped by another guard, for some reason asking why
he's here when he's already being escorted by a guard. Had he
done something wrong? He shrinks down a little under the guard's
gaze, looking over at Gladius nervously. His hoof taps against
the ground several times, but stops when he suddenly remembers
he has his notebook with him, and he nervously gets it out and
flips to a blank page. 'I have a question about an asteroid.' He
writes, his hoof a little shaky. 'Gladius said there might be
somepony here who could answer it.' He turns the notebook around
to show the guard, swallowing nervously and hoping that would be
all that's needed.

The guard narrowed his eyes at Woodwind as he waited for his
answer, the eventual reveal of his notebook raising an eyebrow
but answering his question while simultaneously raising another.
"So you've come to the Royal Library to learn about asteroids?
Who exactly are you looking for?"
"Who do you think?" Gladius asked back in place of his new
friend, him noticing how nervous he'd become and started
standing a bit more defensively by him in response, "I'll give
you three guesses. Hint: If it takes you more than one he would
yell at you."
"Couldn't you have taken your little friend to the regular
public library in his area? What's he need to come and probably
get us all suffering headaches over?"
"Might want to watch what you say there, my 'little friend' made
himself a big discovery recently. Something everypony who's
anypony in the world pf astronomy will want to know about."
Gladius had no idea how accurate he was in what he was saying,
but he doubted that the other guard was an expert on asteroids
any more than he was. "Trust me, if you turn him away and that
stallion somehow hears about it, you'll be stuck listening to
him for Celestia only knows how long."
It only took a few seconds for the other guard to think about
this before deciding. "Fine. But if he gets all worked up
because of you two, its all on you. I had nothing to do with
either of you managing to get inside. In fact, I didn't even see
you."
"Alrighty!" Gladius replied cheerfully before gesturing once
again for Woodwind to follow, him leading the pony a little
further before needing to pause and asking Windy a question to
satisfy his curiosity once they were a ways away from the other
guard, "How big of a discovery is an asteroid again?"

Woodwind continues to cower under the guard's gaze, his eyes
shifting nervously back and forth looking anywhere but directly
at the armored stallion. Thankfully, Gladius steps in to answer
his question, Woodwind having not really known who the pony they
were looking for was. He stands back as the two guards talk,
feeling a little bit better now that the guard's attention is
away from him, though he still remains on edge. Soon though
Gladius convinces the other guard to let them through, and
Woodwind gladly follows him further into the library and out of
sight of the door guard. 'It's not usually that important.' He
writes, still looking a little uncomfortable. 'Unless there's
something special about it most probably won't even hear about
it.' He gives a shrug, but puts on a small smile. 'Thank you for
getting me in.'

"Eh, its no problem," Gladius replied, "he was just being a jerk
for the sake of being a jerk I think. Probably a bit grumpy
after having had to listen to this other guy go off on ponies
for what I'm assuming has probably been hours." Seeing how the
other stallion appeared to still be a bit uncomfortable from the
encounter, Gladius gave him a playful tap on his shoulder and
encouraging smile, "hey, relax. You'll need to loosen up for
when this stallion discovers you found an asteroid made out of
some kind of amazingly valuable material that will boost the
world's technology to new heights if they can catch it somehow."
Obviously a jest, but he hoped that trying to move on from the
confrontation with the other guard would allow his new friend to
feel more comfortable and have some fun as they began to walk
again towards the source of the earlier shouting. Reaching
another door, which apparently meant the voice of the stallion
inside had either been unobstructed by it earlier or had been
loud enough to lunch through it, Gladius paused and flashed
Windy another smile, "Ready to name an asteroid and probably
become super famous?"

Woodwind takes one last glance back toward the door, and hopes
they don't get any more trouble on the way back out. He looks
back at Gladius, and manages a smile at Gladius' joke. He nods
his head, hopefully showing that he feels better and follows
after his new friend once again, looking around at the shelves
as they go. He starts to get nervous again as they reach the
door however, and he takes a deep breath in an attempt to push
it away. Things would be fine, it was just a question about an
asteroid, no reason the apparently chronically grumpy stallion
would get angry. He nods at Gladius again with a slightly weaker
smile, as ready as he's going to be.
