Foxtrot keeps his gaze forward, a slight smile appearing on his
face. "Thanks for not freaking out." He suddenly lets out a
small chuckle, "I remember the last time I told somepony that. I
was at a cafe in Canterlot and I was waiting for a drink I paid
for. I informed somepony I was chatting with at the time about
it and they flipped out and called the guards; I pretty much had
to outrun them again to avoid getting caught." He shakes his
head, the smile growing a bit more, "The worst part wasn't the
chase, or the pony or any of that. The worst part was that I
paid 15 bits for a drink I never got." Foxtrot's laughter
diminishes as the two continue through the town. The air had
cooled down a bit as a few clouds travel ahead in the sky. "Oh
by the way, the Captain might have given you his thanks, but I
don't think I gave you mine. So, hmm..." The unicorn pauses,
then shrugs, "Thank you. I know this whole thing wasn't easy,
but I admit if I did myself things wouldn't have ended like they
did."

Mesa just nodded at the stallion's thanks, embarrassment fading
a bit as she looked back at Foxtrot to listen to his story. He
had to outrun the guards? For having some type of mental
condition? she thought, looking puzzled for a moment before her
face cleared. Oh yeah, he mentioned that bounty on his head...
from Manehattan, was it? Or maybe Detrot? Maybe that's what he
means. She shrugged it off, at this point guessing that there
was simply a lot of things Foxtrot wasn't telling her. She
couldn't blame him for keeping his cards close to his chest,
with the nature of his job.
She was broken out of her thoughts at Foxtrot's mention of what
the worst part was, his laughter proving infectious as Mesa
giggled. They lapsed into a comfortable silence, Mesa
absent-mindedly stretching out her wings to let the cool air
tickle her feathers. She pulled them back in as Foxtrot thanked
her again. "I don't know about that. You seem like you might
sometimes underestimate herself. But you're welcome. As I said,
I'm glad I could help." The two reached the edge of the markets,
and Mesa suddenly realized that she had no idea where they were
going. "Uh, Foxtrot... Did you have a specific location for
aforementioned snack in mind, or were we planning on getting
lost again?" Her tone was light, Foxtrot's apparent carefree
mood after the whole operation rubbing off on the pegasus.

"A specific location? Nah, sometimes getting lost is the best
way to find what you want." Foxtrot answers as they journey into
the main plaza. The ponies in town seem to have diminished
slightly, but a good enough amount of activity was still going
on. The distant chatter in the distance coupled with the feint
rattling of an old cart being pulled are really the only sounds
breaking through the day's silence. An aroma of apples from a
nearby vendor catches the unicorn's attention, turning his head
to find crisp green apples on display, "There we go, simple but
get's the job done." Walking to the stall, the unicorn pulls out
the last remaining bits he has and purchases an apple. Taking a
bite he examines the apple with slight surprise, "A bit sour but
not bad." Glancing over to Mesa he continues, "Well I'm good for
now? Did you want to get anything, or go somewhere or do
something?"

As Foxtrot went to buy his apple, Mesa glanced around the stalls
before realizing that she wasn't really hungry. The slight,
guilty churning in her stomach was still present, making her
face fall ever-so-slightly before she recovered. She quickly
smiled as Foxtrot glanced at her, shaking her head. "I'm not
hungry. And what, I haven't driven you away?" She joked,
pretending to look shocked.
Then, with little warning, a wave of emotion slammed into her,
much like it had back on the roof. Mesa's smile instantly
vanished, and she shut her eyes tightly against the guilt and
sorrow and pain that abruptly filled her. It took several
excruciatingly long seconds for the pegasus to gain control
again, temporarily oblivious to the world around her before she
opened her eyes again, her expression faintly nauseous. She had
known she wouldn't be able to keep herself detached forever, but
she had thought that she'd have at least a little more control
over herself. It was as if her body had abruptly decided that
the incident at the train station was the last straw and it was
now time for an emotional purge, regardless of any inconvenience
breaking down in the middle of town may cause.
"Foxtrot?" Mesa said quietly, suddenly unsure if he had just
been talking or not. Looking genuinely apologetic now, along
with her distressed expression, she said, "I'm sorry, but I'm
not feeling very well. I think it'd be best if I just went back
to the inn and rested." And cried, because for some reason I
can't control my own damn emotions. "I'm sorry," she said again,
her head starting to pound and making her uncertain if she had
already said that.

Foxtrot lightly chuckles at Mesa's joking, but instantly stops
when he sees the pegasus acting differently. He watches as her
smile fades and her eyes seal shut, a gesture that he's seen
before with new recruits back in his Royal Guard days. Something
was obviously making her upset, queasy even as the mare opened
her eyes back up. Foxtrot's expression remains mostly stoic, now
isn't the place or time to ask questions or cause a scene;
matters like this are better sorted out in private. The unicorn
nods as Mesa suggests returning back to the inn, her second
apology making his ears fold back slightly as concern begins to
show in his expression and voice. "Mesa, that's fine. You don't
have to apologize for anything, it's alright. Let's get you back
to your room." As the two venture back to the inn, Foxtrot
occasionally glances over to Mesa, making sure that her
temporary uneasiness didn't worsen. He also thinks back to what
happened today, recalling her behavior throughout the whole
train station fiasco. The only time that she lost her cool was
at the front gate, but why? He wanted to ask her, heck, he just
wanted to make her feel better; but that would have to wait
until they got to the inn. When they finally reached the hotel
lobby Foxtrot looks over to Mesa, his tone calm but still tinted
with worry, "Here we are Mesa." He pauses, his concern becoming
more evident as he asks, "Did you need anything else? Food?
Something to drink?" The unicorn's ears flick a few times, "I
can lend you an ear or two if need be?"

Mesa just nodded at Foxtrot's assurance that she didn't need to
apologize, her expression not changing much. She trailed
slightly after him all the way back to the inn, struggling to
keep her composure. She never met the unicorn's eyes as he
glanced at her, instead staring at the ground until they reached
where she was staying. Hearing Foxtrot's question, she looked up
in slight surprise, then smiled very faintly, though her eyes
were dull. "I'm fine. I'm tougher than I look. But thank you.
And you're very kind, but I'm sure you have better things to do
than listen to my every problem." She hesitated, glancing off to
the side. "I probably just caught some minor bug," she lied,
rather unconvincingly. "I'll be good as new by tomorrow."
Her legs started to tremble slightly, and she gritted her teeth.
Hold it together, she told herself angrily, while forcing her
eyes to stay focused, not glaze over and let... certain memories
be played like a slideshow in front of her. "But y'know, I
should..." She trailed off, gesturing vaguely towards the hall
that branched off the lobby and towards her room. "Thanks
again," she said distractedly, starting to back away from
Foxtrot and towards the hall.

Foxtrot's ears drop completely when he sees how serious Mesa's
condition was. He keeps a calm demeanor, slightly nodding at the
pegasus's hesitant self diagnosis, of course knowing that wasn't
the case. The unicorn remains silent as she trails off and
begins listing over to the hallway. "Alright Mesa... If you say
so." Foxtrot stays in place for a bit as she makes her way to
her room, once she's a short distance away he turns around and
slowly walks towards the exit. Already his hoof begins shaking
as he picks it up, his thoughts already arguing in his head. The
unicorn stops though, when the memories of Detrot flash in his
head. How he tried to stay in control of his problems, how he
failed and the actions afterward. The city's third night in
complete darkness, the only sources are the candles from houses
of those lucky enough to have them. Emergency supplies coming in
as the guards keep the peace, monitor the only town's working
wells, and hunt the one responsible for all of it. And there he
was, hiding scared in some dark alley, damning himself and his
actions. Foxtrot performs an about turn and begins trotting over
to the pegasus, "Mesa!" he shouts over as he gets closer. Once
he catches up he stays facing forward, "I should tell you
something. I don't have anything better to do... I really don't
to be honest. Besides, I recognize that look, something's wrong.
If I can help you by listening to your every problem, than I'm
all ears."

After backing away a few more steps, Mesa turned around and made
her way down the hall, never taking her gaze off the floor. Her
walk quickened into trot as she neared the entrance to her room;
Mesa was determined to get into a private place before she broke
down. Even so, tears started gathering in her eyes as she
hurried down the hall. When she was just a couple steps from her
door, Foxtrot's shout caused her to pause. She heard him
approaching, but didn't turn around as the stallion spoke. When
he finished, Mesa was very still for a long moment. She finally
turned her head to look at him, eyes bright with unshed tears.
"I told you," she said, her voice breaking slightly. "I'm just
sick."
Foxtrot doesn't deserved to be lied to. The thought came
abruptly, and Mesa's ears immediately drooped. Hanging her head,
she quietly amended, "That's not true." A minute of silence
passed before Mesa spoke again. Her voice was almost too quiet
to be heard. "It's so stupid. I shouldn't be so... But I just...
It was the guard. On the roof." She looked back up, looking the
stallion straight in the eyes as if to impress the importance of
what she was about to say. "I hurt him, Foxtrot. I'm not
supposed to do that. I'm supposed to protect ponies. Maybe it
shouldn't be a big deal to me, but to be completely honest, it
is." She dropped her gaze again, losing her nerve. "He was so
still," she whispered, then cleared her throat. "I'm not
normally this bad. I'm really not. But sometimes something seems
to act as a trigger and..." She trailed off, biting her lip and
blinking her eyes rapidly to try to clear them.

Foxtrot silently looks over and listens to what Mesa has to say,
nodding when she tells him her illness wasn't real. When she
brings up the guard, the unicorn's ears fold back, his gaze
broken for a second before he returns his gaze to the pegasus.
As she reveals what's really upsetting her, Foxtrot retains a
calm demeanor, despite the growing regret in his mind. Once her
gaze drops again, the unicorn's own demeanor breaks; he sits
down, looking to the floor for a moment before turning his head
back to Mesa. When she trails off Foxtrot lifts his hoof and
places it on her shoulder, "I understand Mesa... And I'm sorry
for putting you in that spot; I should've-" he sighs, glancing
back to the floor for a moment before looking back to her, "I'm
sorry."

Mesa didn't seem to notice the hoof on her shoulder, just stared
at Foxtrot as he spoke. At the apology, her blue eyes became
faintly alarmed. "I didn't mean it like that! You don't need to
apologize. I should have been able to do it without getting
upset... You couldn't have known. Sorry if I sounded like I was
blaming you." She took a deep, shaky breath. "And it was
probably good for me, in a way. I shouldn't be so sensitive to
things like that. I wasn't always like-" She stopped abruptly,
clearing her throat and blinking away more wetness. "Anyway, I
just need a little time. I wasn't lying when I said I'll be as
good as new by tomorrow."
