Foxtrot keeps pace with Mesa as they head out of the town.
Seeing the trail up ahead, the unicorn grins a bit finding that
they will be avoiding it all together. With his drink less hot
now, he begins sipping his beverage more as they near the brush.
Looking into the forest, a sense of caution and eagerness grips
him, not really knowing what to expect. "So anyplace you're
looking for or are we just here to get lost? I don't mind either
option, sometimes getting lost is the best adventures you can
have."

Mesa paused at the edge of the forest, taking out her crossbow
and loading it, before refastening it on her belt. Not
particularly good for her bow, but Mesa like it ready and in
easy reach when traveling in unfamiliar surroundings. "I'm not
looking for anything specific, I just want to get familiar with
this part of the forest." She glanced over at Foxtrot and
grinned. "So yeah, the plan is to pretty much get lost." And
with that, she started into the Everfree.
The instant she stepped into the undergrowth, her demeanor
changed. Previously relaxed ears perked up warily, and her eyes
became more serious as she scanned the trees, though she kept
her slight smile. "So," she said conversationally, starting to
move deeper into the trees. "It sounds like you have had
experience in getting-lost adventures."

Foxtrot follows Mesa through the woods, his ears on a pivot for
any unusual noises, but focus on the Pegasus when she asks a
question. "Getting lost? Oh yea, I have an odd gift of getting
lost. Or just getting in over my head." He ducks under a branch
as the two venture forward. "The worst thing you can ever get
lost in... is a royal Canterlot party. There's always a good
chance that you'll run into somepony who will talk about
something you're really not interested in." Foxtrot pauses as he
recalls another instance, "During an assignment I got lost in a
city and I ended up in a bar full of enemy soldiers, not a
single friendly face in sight. It ended better than expected."

The undergrowth quickly thickened as Mesa and Foxtrot travelled
deeper into the Everfree, the whole forest growing dimmer as the
sunlight struggled to reach through the leafy canopy. Mesa gave
a faint chuckle at the thought of getting 'lost' at a Canterlot
party, then looked perturbed as Foxtrot continued. "Really? How
so?" she asked curiously. She stopped briefly as she did a 360
degree turn to take in her surroundings, narrowing in her eyes
in concentration as she starting drawing up a mental map of the
forest.

"Well thankfully they didn't know who I was, so I had the
element of surprise. It was also fortunate that my mission
wasn't about busting heads, instead about gathering intel." As
Mesa examined her surroundings, Foxtrot simply close his eyes
and listened in on the sounds around them. After a brief pause
he continues, "The only thing I did that night was buy them all
a round of drinks and have a good time. Get somepony drunk
enough and they really like telling you secrets." He then
chuckles, "It was around that time that I realized that I myself
had become rather intoxicated. So I told my new buddies I had to
go and they for my cab fare. Next day they all get taken down
and captured with a terrible hangover. I just ended up with the
latter." Foxtrot looks over to Mesa, "How about you? Any other
close calls during your line of work?"

Mesa finished her surveying and continued on, grinning when
Foxtrot finished. She didn't drink herself, but she knew most
ponies weren't always as careful of what they said when they
were drunk. "I'm glad it worked out," she said, her grin growing
wider at the question. "Oh, too many times to count. It's
amazing I'm still alive, honestly." She pushed her way through a
large bush, expression becoming distant.
"Just over a year ago, I was guiding a small group over Foal
Mountain in the dead of winter. A day and a half into the trip,
a huge blizzard came. I couldn't see more than a couple feet in
front of me. We decided to push through it for a few hours,
until I don't know... I just got kind of nervous." She gave a
wry smile before continuing. "I like to think I instinctively
knew continuing was unsafe, but who knows? I might've just been
hungry or something. Either way, I got spooked and made everyone
stop to set up camp early. It snowed through the night, and in
the morning..." She trailed off, ducking under a low branch
before continuing.
"We had gotten slightly off the planned route. Literally two
meters from where we had set up camp, there was the precipice of
a cliff. If we had continued for even a minute more, we would
have fallen nearly 200 meters," she said, smiling despite the
fear involved with the memory. "I guess I would have been fine,"
she said, nodding back at her wings, "-but the rest of the group
were unicorns. They were shaken up pretty badly, but we finished
the crossing without a hitch. Scary stuff, but I guess the risk
is one reason I love my job."

Foxtrot listens to the story a bit more than he should, nearly
tripping himself when he hears about the drop. He keeps his
footing though and quietly hears the rest. "Note to self, listen
to Mesa's gut and instincts." The unicorn glances over to the
pegasus's wings, "I'm sure those wings have proved their
usefulness plenty of times in your travels. Plus it looks like a
lot of fun flying everywhere."

Mesa absentmindedly ruffled her wings at Foxtrot's comment, and
nodded. "They've gotten me out of a lot of tight spots. I'm not
as strong of a flier as I used to be, though. I broke them both
several year-" She stopped abruptly, halting as she stared
intently into the undergrowth on the right of the pair. She was
silent for several seconds, her ears pivoting back and forth.
"Did you hear that?" she finally said, her voice low. A split
second later she heard it again, a bit louder: a distant roar
that echoed through the gnarled trees.
Mesa didn't flinch, just turned and gave Foxtrot a searching
look before smiling slightly. "That sounds like something that
needs to be checked out, don't you think?" Normally Mesa
wouldn't even dream of taking anypony else into a potentially
dangerous situation, but this wasn't a normal guiding job.
Foxtrot had promised he would run if he got in over his head.
'And we'd be quick- just a brief glance to see what it is, then
be on our way,' she promised herself. A moment later, however,
her smile faded. "Or we can play it safe," she added, keeping
her face neutral to let Foxtrot know it was okay if he'd rather
retreat.

Foxtrot keeps himself low to the brush as the roars echo through
the forest. He looks at Mesa with some excitement when she
suggests checking it out, smirking when she then offers the
second option. "Yea... No let's go check it out." Right away the
unicorn continues forward, his pace steady as he remains level
with the brush underneath him. "If I let roars in the distance
scare me off then I would be out of a job altogether. Besides...
this is just, fun."

Mesa rolled her eyes at Foxtrot's smirk, but smiled, glad that
he was willing to take a risk. "Okay, okay. Sorry to insult your
toughness." She chuckled faintly at stalking a probably
dangerous creature being Foxtrot's idea of fun. Not that Mesa
had any room to talk; she was enjoying herself more than she
probably should. Becoming more serious, she mimicked Foxtrot's
crouch and caught up with him, her hoof steps silent as they
continued on. The roar came again, sounding nearer. Mesa slowed
just enough to gently touch her crossbow to make sure it was
still loaded. Just in case. 'Whatever that is, it doesn't sound
happy...'
