Re: Float Like a Parasprite, Sting Like a Manticore

As Blossom's gaze swept over their surroundings, Bastion
fidgeted anxiously with his armor, double- and triple-checking
that it was on securely before he pulled his sword out of its
sheathe with a satisfying, reassuring 'shlink'. He then made
sure his shield was within reach and ready to be drawn within a
moment's notice before stepping into the forest alongside
Blossom, gaze mostly held forward as he let Blossom scout around
as usual. Subconsciously, he found his way closer to Blossom
under the daunting atmosphere of the Everfree, nearly brushing
against her with their proximity. "Y...Yeah. I used to explore
places like this all the time when I was a kid. Caves. Abandoned
houses. Places I wasn't supposed to be. So this should just be
child's play. Routine grab-and-bag mission. Nothing's gonna go
wrong. I'm gonna keep you safe and we'll both get out of here
and we'll still get to visit Prance when we go on leave..."
Despite his mostly straight face and quiet tone, his slight
rambling gave hint that maybe he was a little more nervous than
he might like to admit.

Blossom looked at Bastion as she noticed him wandering a little
closer to her, taking a little step to the side to keep a safe
distance between them and maintain a better formation so that
they wouldn't run into each other should they need to move
quickly and suddenly. As much as Bastion was talking, Blossom
still had to keep an eye out for things that might sneak up on
them, as well as make sure that they weren't going to get lost
as they wandered deeper and deeper into the overgrowth.
"Bastille," she warned quietly, "you're getting a little close
there." When he had time to correct himself, Blossom retrieved
the map from her bag, opening it to see what kind of landmark
they should be looking for first. "Watch for a... quel est ce
dessin, a large cavern? It shouldn't be too hard to miss, but
still." She rolled up the map and put it back before looking
back to Bastion briefly, "For a mission that's not going to go
wrong, you still sound pretty nervous, Bastion. Are you worried
about something?"

"Sorry," Bastion mumbled quietly when Blossom warned that he was
getting too close, taking a slight step away to correct that
mistake. His gaze continued to sweep the area in front of him as
Blossom checked the map, only to hum quietly when she mentioned
it was a large cavern they were looking for. After that, when
she asked if he was worried about something he paused for a
moment before sighing and shrugging. "I don't know. It's this
place. The air is oppressive, and the whole thing just feels
unnatural. Guess I wasn't a hundred percent prepared. I just...
have a bad feeling in my gut. I'll be alright, though; I've been
through worse places as a kid."
After more time of walking, the large cavern they were looking
for had been spotted, and the two of them walked towards the
entrance. Once there, Bastion cast a simple light spell,
emanating the light around them with his horn's golden glow
before glancing over to Blossom and asking, "So what is it we're
looking for here, again?"

Blossom closed the map as they came across the cave, peeking
around inside as Bastion's horn lit up the interior, "We aren't
looking for anything in here. This is just a landmark so that we
know we are going the right way." She glanced around a few more
times, the cavern lit up thanks to Bastion's help, spotting a
few interesting things in the cave that she had never seen
before, most likely because she had never gone spelunking
before. There were rock formations pointing sharply down from
the ceiling, and almost immediately below that, a more thick,
blunt mirror of it rising from the ground. These pairs of
formations lined the edges from this cave, and it gave it an
eerie look when a light was cast upon it, the shadows behind it
looking very much like teeth. She backed up and commented, "You
have been to worse, hmm? Like what?" and quickly added, "This is
big enough for a small family to live in... or perhaps something
pretty big. Let's hope we don't run into anything like that.
Anyway, there should be a tree around here that has supplies for
us if we end up needing them on our return trip."

Quietly, Bastion looked around the cave as he waited for
Blossom's response to his question, his only current answer
being steady drips from various places inside the cave. The
shadows cast were indeed a bit eerie, the uneasy look Bastion
wore from their trek through the forest still on his face. When
she did respond, he nodded slightly and stood still as she
glanced around for a bit longer before joining her as she backed
up. Then, after she mentioned the tree that had supplies for
them, he turned and continued on towards the castle ruins,
saying, "Would be a good place to weather out a storm. Bit
creepy maybe, but it'd be better than staying wet through the
night. As for worse places... Yeah. I guess. Some ponies might
have different ideas on what 'worse' is. Mom's funeral was worse
than this, even though some ponies might think different.
Haunted cave, too. Or it was thought to be haunted, anyway.
Still, unsettling to see skeletons riddled around a cave. This
the worst place you've been?"

Blossom stayed quiet as Bastion mentioned his mother's funeral,
effectively silencing her in a mental lockdown of awkwardness.
It was true, bastion had been through even worse, and that
situation just trumped everything that she could have possibly
said. There was nothing she could say after that that wouldn't
come across the wrong way; if she said that she might have been
through worse, she could only imagine what kinds of offended
Bastion would have been, even if he had come to accept the fact
that it happened. It would be best if she just left the topic
lie as it was, there was no telling what kind of risks there
were in opening that whole can of worms. "Well, I haven't really
done much out of the ordinary compared to you. I didn't explore
all that much, and I never cared too much for the 'haunted
houses' that were set up in the fairs in Prance." Leaving it at
that, she exited the cave, looking to see where they would be
going next on the map, and beginning to walk in that direction
with Bastion. "What kind of haunted cave are you talking about
by the way? Were the skeletons, umm, pony skeletons?"

"Mm. Yeah. Some of them," Bastion started simply after Blossom
asked if the skeletons in the cave had been pony skeletons.
"There were diamong dog and gryphon skeletons, too. A few animal
skeletons as well from what I could tell. It was supposedly
where a notorious gang of pirates had found their way and either
never came back out, or chose to make that place their final
stand, depending on who you asked. Needless to say, that place
was chock full of traps and such. So this forest still isn't as
bad as that. The most we have to worry about is something
jumping out at us. Anyway... what's next? Please tell me the
next thing we know we'll be staring the castle in the face."

"Si seulement," Blossom said as she looked at the map, "It is
still a bit of a walk, and pretty cut off from civilization. It
won't take much longer though." They continued walking along the
road, the overgrowth encroaching upon the path more and more as
they went on, and at some times enough to force the two of them
to walk single file. This happened more and more the further
away they went from Ponyville, but some time later, they finally
entered a clearing of a sort. Blossom was getting a little
irritated with this vegetation, and had to pick a few irritating
burrs out of her coat along the way, but as she looked about the
clearing, she could see some unnatural formations coming out of
the ground. Stone bricks, covered in moss and vines, in ruinous
piles that she could only guess were walls once upon a time;
windows weathered and clouded with age; as well as an arch that
was still imposing, even if it was imposing. They were at the
old castle, and close to their objective.
Putting away the map that she had been referencing every minute,
she looked at Bastion and said, "Time to see what kind of ghosts
still haunt these ruins, hmm?"

Bastion nodded slightly in acknowledgement when Blossom
mentioned it wouldn't be much longer. As patiently as he could,
he just continued onward, putting one hoof in front of the other
and hoping nothing would jump out at them while they were
hindered by the narrow pathway. They weren't, thankfully, and
soon their destination came into view: the skeletal remains of
what used to be the princess' old castle. Seeming a little less
intimidated now that they had their objective and destination
within sight, Bastion grinned a little bit as his sense of
adventure kicked in once more. "Looking forward to it," Bastion
replied to Blossom's question with genuine enthusiasm, before
walking eagerly into the castle proper.
With his sword at the ready, he swept his gaze around the
interior as he stepped inside, marveling at how grand the place
was, even if it was now in shambles. It just made him wonder
what kind of place it was before Princess Luna had turned to
Nightmare Moon. Unfortunately, though, there was no real time to
wonder or explore. They had to get what they came for and get
out of there. "We should probably split up to find the stairs
down easier. Or not, it doesn't matter to me," he told her,
glancing over to her briefly before wandering over to one of the
open doorways, casting another simple light spell down it.
Hallway to a... library, it looked like, with a couple other
hallways splitting off from it.
He moved on from that doorway, going on to look through a few
more before eventually deciding to wander down one of them,
light spell still going. Much to his excitement, the end of the
hallway held exactly what he hoped for: a spiral staircase
leading down. After finding it, he went back to find Blossom
with a grin--or just looked over to her with a grin if she'd
decided to follow--before saying, "Found the way down. You
excited to see what's waiting for us?"

Blossom didn't share as much of Bastion's enthusiasm for
exploration at this time. This was a strange place to her, and
until she was certain that there would be nothing that could
hurt them in the immediate vicinity, there would be no relaxing
and exploring. Her training that was practically hardwired into
her brain was kicking in. Secure the immediate area, regroup,
and form a plan. The castle proper would be an easy place to
stage their excursion into the deeper parts of the castle for
now, and just glancing around, she could see that there was
nothing much to secure. It was a big empty room with a few
windows, and looked pretty similar in style to the current
castle in Canterlot.
She glanced over to Bastion as he suggested splitting up,
feeling a little bit of hesitation to agree with him. Splitting
up just made the both of them half as effective at what they do,
but at the same time, it would cover more ground. Not only that,
but what if one of them were to get in trouble? The few seconds
that it would take for the other to get to their aid could be
the difference between a living and a dead partner. Already
though, he was wandering towards one of the doorways. "Bastille,
vous ne pouvez pas s'égarer!" she said rapidly, biting her
tongue as she realized that she had instinctively reverted to
her native language, a sure and distinct sign that she felt
something was amiss.
After collecting her thoughts and translating herself for
herself, she trotted after him and repeated, "Just... make sure
we can still see each other at all times, and don't wander more
than ten meters away from the other." There, rules were in
place, she could relax now. Just follow her own rules, and
everything would be fine. There is order in this excursion now.
Still, it wasn't like it was going to make a difference; they
were just looking through doorways right now, trying to find
some way to head to the underground floors where this vault was
supposed to be, and every single door that Blossom looked into
was just more ruins. The thought that the stairway may have ben
buried crossed her mind, but it was dashed when Bastion called
out that he found a way down. Trotting over to him, she looked
down and motioned for him to lead the way.
