Re: Night Lights

Gladius followed the other stallion closer to his telescope, the
guard then watching as its owner used it for a few moments then
gestured for him to take a look. Stepping closer, Gladius did
just that, removing his helmet and then having his vision be
focused through the telescopes lens and magnified enough for him
to see the dot in space that it was currently centered on. To
the guards untrained eye that's all it was, one dot among many,
and no amount of staring was changing much in the way of how
asteroid-ish the dot appeared. "How can you tell what it is?" He
asked both with interest and without looking up, him spending a
few more seconds watching the dot in the sky before remembering
how most of the conversation from the other stallions side had
been done with a notepad so far, this encouraging the guard to
look up from the telescope and back to Woodwind. "It just seems
to mix in with everything else that's up there to me. How did
you even notice something like that?"

Woodwind watches the sky as Gladius leans in to look through the
telescope, once again picking out constellations while he waits
for the guard to finish. He looks back down once Gladius
addresses him, and tapping out a response. 'I can tell it's an
asteroid because of the way it moves and it's position. It's not
a star because it doesn't stay fixed, but it's not a planet
because it's not on one of their paths, and if it were a comet
it would have a tail.' He explains, hoping Gladius was able to
understand everything. The brown pegasus looks back to the sky
again. 'I was looking at a cluster of stars.' He starts, pausing
to point out the particular stars he'd been watching. 'When I
noticed something that shouldn't have been there. It took me a
few days to figure out what it was.'

Gladius understood most of what the other stallion was telling
him and what words were a bit iffy or strange, such as how a
comet was supposed to have a 'rail', he was confident he had
been able to decipher the correct meaning. "So, basically, out
of an entire sky full of dots you managed to spot one that
shouldn't have been there?" The guard asked, sounding both
impressed and a bit confused by how somepony could manage to do
such a thing. He looked back up at the sky, finding that even
with the constellations he recognized he had absolutely no idea
of whether or not the little lights around them were supposed to
be there or not, his eyes and mind of course jumping between the
appropriate stars forming the pattern and barely even
registering the large mass of other lights shining around them.
"You must really know your stuff if you can pick up on something
that small being out of place. I don't know if I could ever
manage that. Memorizing clusters of stars and what should and
shouldn't be there. Heh, have you named it yet? Do they name
asteroids? I know they name comets, but I don't actually know
very much about asteroids. Also, can you tell how large this
Woodwind asteroid is from here? And whether or not its hurtling
straight towards us?" The last question was added on with an
obvious tone of humor, the guard now squinting his eyes as he
vainly tried to recall if all of those stars beneath Aires horn
had always been there.

Woodwind starts to look sheepish at Gladius' praise, and shakes
his head. 'It was mostly luck. He taps out, following Gladius'
gaze upward. 'I was only looking at a small section of the sky,
and it just happened to have the asteroid when I looked. If I'd
been a day or two off I wouldn't have seen it. The brown pegasus
looks back down, his eyes wandering around the darkened park.
'It might already have a name. I've been checking to see if it's
registered anywhere but I haven't found anything yet.' He laughs
silently at the guard's joke, looking back up again with a
smile. 'It's not too big, probably about the size of a cart. And
luckily it's decided not to hit us. This time.' He gives another
quiet laugh, looking at the spot in the sky the asteroid
occupies. 'It'll probably only be visible for a couple more
days.' He taps out with a small sigh, though his smile doesn't
falter.

"Luck for spotting it maybe, but it wasn't luck that allowed you
to recognize what it was." Gladius pointed out, looking down and
back into the telescope for a few moments to indeed confirm that
he still didn't get how the other stallion was able to do it.
Humming as the other pegasus continued to show that he was
listening, the guard was surprised to learn that what he was
staring at was apparently only the size of a cart, him glancing
up from the telescope to raise an eyebrow at the star gazing
pony before returning his gaze to the, now even smaller seeming,
dot in the sky. "That's only as big as a cart? So, basically,
your telling me you picked out what is essentially a speck in
space? Pfft... And I couldn't even remember a common grouping of
stars..." He reminded himself with a chuckle, "How close would
you say it is? I'm assuming its not very far if its that small
but can still be spotted from here but, as is becoming
increasingly clear, I don't seem to assume accurately when it
comes to astronomy... Possibly no name..." He murmured to
himself, "Only a few days... Hmm..."

Woodwind glances around the park, blushing slightly at the
continued praise. He doesn't think it's really all that
impressive that he'd spotted it, he'd just been looking at the
right place at the right time. 'A large cart.' He adds at the
guard's disbelief, though he doesn't really believe it will make
much difference. He moves in to look through the telescope again
as he thinks about Gladius' question, trying to get a good guess
on the asteroid's distance. 'Well.' He taps out, giving a slight
sigh in an imitation "hm". 'I'd say it's probably a little
further out than the moon' He answers after several more moments
of thought, looking back at Gladius curiously as he mutters
something to himself.

Pfft, it could have been a humongous cart used for transporting
large cubes and slabs of stone and what not for massive building
projects and it wouldnt have lessened Gladius' opinion on the
speck in the sky and how impossible it seemed to him to have
identified it. The guard took a small step back and away from
the telescope to allow Woodwind the room needed to use it
himself as he listened to the stalions answers as well as
continued to mentally chew on a thought. "Further than the
moon... Guess only Princess Luna needs to worry about any
possible collisions then. For now at least. I wonder if she just
flies up there every now and then and just blasts away incoming
asteroids on a collision course for her moon or the world
itself." He joked before humming again and deciding that he may
as well go ahead and share the idea he had gotten a few moments
ago. "You know... If you really aren't sure if this asteroid has
a name yet and would like to find out, I think I know a way to
learn for sure. I was headed for the castle before finding you
here, and that place tends to have plenty of smart ponies of
every kind just wandering around during all hours of the day, so
I'm sure more than a hooful are there right now staring up at
the stars too. We could go ask them about it? I know of one pony
who would no doubt be there and might be able to answer a couple
questions at least."

Woodwind just shrugs at Gladius' joking speculation, not having
learned much about Luna since she'd returned. He supposes it's
possible that she does things like that, or could if anything
large enough to be threatening ever came their way. But things
had been fine before she'd come back, so he doubts it's really a
regular duty of hers. He looks back at Gladius, listening and
thinking over the guard's offer. There was likely at least one
pony there who might know something, even besides whoever it was
Gladius was sure would be there. Might be nice to see the castle
too, as he'd never visited it before. But what if they met one
of the princesses? What would he do then? Woodwind thinks it
over for several moments, turning his gaze upward as he
considers. Finally he looks back at Gladius and gives a nod,
then turns to begin gathering up his things. The telescope is
disassembled and placed in the long case he'd brought it in, and
his notebook is closed and the pencil tucked into it. After a
couple seconds of awkward fumbling, the case is balanced on his
back and the notebook tucked in it's customary spot beneath his
wing, and he turns back to Gladius, ready to follow.

"Cool." Gladius says, nodding back at the stallion and putting
his helmet back onto his head then stepping back further to let
him get everything packed away. He'd have offered to help in
some way, but his unfamiliarity with the telescope and how
efficiently Woodwind did it on his own meant both that Gladius
would have probably broken something and that he wasn't exactly
needed, so he just trotted a fee feet up the path towards the
castle then paused and looked back up at the sky, the guard now
having effectively lost wherever that asteroid was... Or could
have been staring directly at it at that moment and just not
realized it... Tricky stars and dots... Always disappearing when
you look directly at them... He always wondered why that was...
Maybe the star gazed would know? "Hey, Woodwind," he spoke up as
the other stallion finished getting his stuff ready, deciding to
ask as he began to lead the way towards the castle, "do you know
why it is that when you look right at a star it seems to vanish
until you look away from it? I've never known why as whenever I
think about finding out I just forget about it." He slowed a bit
after asking, him remembering again how the other pony
communicated and not being sure if he would have to stop to get
his answer every time they spoke or if he had some way of
responding while on the move.

Woodwind takes a few steps toward Gladius, only to pause when
the telescope case starts to slip. He shuffles his wings a
little, looking back to make sure it's properly balanced this
time, then follows along behind Gladius. Just like the guard
thought, Woodwind has to pause in order to answer his questions,
and he does so with a slight frown. He looks upward for a few
moments, staring at some star or other and trying to recall.
He'd looked up the answer to this once when he was a foal, and
it was just at the back of his mind... A few more seconds pass
by, and finally Woodwind gives Gladius an apologetic look. 'I'm
sorry, I can't remember.' He taps, taking a few more steps
before stopping again. 'Maybe somepony at the castle will know
that too?'
