Night Lights
By: Gladius Date: March 9, 2014, 7:53 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hours spent walking around and patrolling the quietest and most
uneventful parts of the city brought an orange coated and red
maned royal guard to the later hours of the day, his bored walk
home being the perfect way to close out his boring work shift.
Nothing had happened that required his attention, something most
guards would consider a good day, but the fact that he'd been
given the job of wandering around the safest areas of Canterlot
specifically so he wouldn't be needed did nothing more than
frustrate the guard as he continued to be babyd and kept so far
away from any kind of trouble out of his higher ups belief that
he couldn't handle it that he may as well just stay at the
barracks and sleep all day and night. Why? Because such a lack
of activity wouldn't change anything in terms of his
contributions to the corps work of protecting and serving the
ponies of the city.
... But he wouldn't do that. No, even as he sighed and glanced
up at the stars above wishing that one of them would somehow
take pity and grant his wish for things to go back to normal,
Gladius knew he'd never turn his back on the guards. Even if he
was stuck with the safest or most pointless of assignments he'd
still gladly accept them out of just being happy that he was
actually doing something instead of being kept in some corner
somewhere like an embarrassing secret. Wasn't too bad he
supposed... least he was still a guard and hadn't been forced
into an extremely early retirement...
Another sigh as Gladius entered and began to make his way
through one of Canterlot's many parks, his attention being split
between the occasional glance around his surroundings and
staring up at the night sky. He'd been annoyed when he'd started
his walk home from across the city, but now that he'd had time
to walk for a bit he was feeling calmer, more relaxed with the
pleasant peacefulness of the night. Eh. Maybe he'd take a detour
to the castle just to check if the lunar guard could use a hoof
with anything. He doubted they'd use him, nopony ever did, but
his uneventful day had left him with plenty of spare energy, and
it was a pretty nice night out, so it was worth a shot to
possibly find an excuse to stay up and about, right?

Woodwind gives a contented sigh, pulling his face away from the
small telescope and turning his gaze down to the notebook laying
in front of him, just barely illuminated enough to read by the
light of the moon. He lifts a pencil with a wing, placing it in
his mouth and leaning down to jot down a few notes, squinting at
them after he'd finished to make sure they're right. The brown
pegasus puts the pencil back down and looks upward, his eyes
slowly picking out a few constellations before moving to the
spot he knows is occupied by an asteroid he'd been tracking the
last few nights, though he can't see it without the aid of his
telescope. His ears twitch slightly as the sound of hoofsteps on
the path reaches them, and her turns his head curiously, wonder
who else would be enjoying the park this late. It was a larger
stallion, his eyes also turned up to the dark, clear sky. He
bites his lip, ever so slightly nervous about the stranger, but
if he was also interested in astronomy... After a moment's
hesitation, he raises a hoof to wave, hoping to catch the orange
stallion's attention.

They'd probably just end up putting him behind a desk or
something... The Lunar guard spent less time around Gladius so
they didn't have as many opportunities to avoid him, but rumors
often managed to cross over between the day and night guards
during the shift changes, so it wasn't uncommon for them too to
decide he'd better serve if kept away from having any real
responsibility... Would kind of defeat the purpose of trying to
stay out tonight if all he'd end up being given was a few indoor
tasks.
Gladius sighed again, brow furrowed as he tried to rack his
brain and identify a certain cluster of stars before turning his
attention away from the lights dotting the darkness, the orange
pegasus now unsure of what exactly he should do as he weighed
the possibilities of his trip to the castle and almost not
noticing the movement in the corner of his vision. Flicking his
eyes in its direction, Gladius found another pegasus out in the
park, this one apparently using something that, after a fair
amount of squinting, Gladius identified as some sort of
telescope. A star gazer, he assumed, a pause in his trot as he
realized the pony was waving to him. Waving back with a friendly
smile, Gladius would have simply continued on his way had he not
again thought of the constellation of stars whose name was
continuing to evade him. Would make sense to ask if the pony
with the telescope pointed at the sky could help his memory with
such things, yeah?
Clearing his throat a little as he changed his course so as to
approach the other stallion, Gladius put on another casual smile
as he neared him and greeted the pony with, "Evening, citizen.
Watching the sky?" He asked with a nod at the telescope before
noticing, but not being able to read despite how his eyes were
so used to the dark from his late shift, the journal laid out in
front of the stranger. "Just enjoying the sights or are you
studying?"

Woodwind returns Gladius' smile with one of his own, lowering
his hoof back to the ground now that he had the orange pegasus'
attention. As the guard moves forward Woodwind recognizes the
armor of one of the guards, and for a moment his smile falters
as a pang of nervousness shoots through him. It returns fully
after a second though, the brief pang of anxiety that the guard
would find somepony out in a park alone at night suspicious
passing when Gladius asks him a question. He glances back up at
the sky for a second, then to his notebook with a slight frown.
He may not have thought this through very well, his inability to
talk meaning the only way he'd be able to communicate was his
notebook. Hopefully there'd be enough light for the guard to
see. He holds up a hoof in a "just one moment" sort of gesture
before turning to pick up his notebook and pencil, taking a
moment to write out 'Hello. I've been tracking an asteroid.' and
presenting it to the larger stallion

Gladius raised a brow at the gesture, him wondering what it was
about as he watched the stallion reach for then scribbled into
his notebook. Maybe he just didn't want to forget something...?
The raised brow stayed the way it was when the pegasus turned
the notebook around to show him what he'd written, a squint of
his eyes not being enough to lake out the words recorded in the
low lighting and requiring an additional step forward and
leaning forward of his head for him to make it out. "Uh..." He
muttered as he picked out the letters on the paper. First word
came to him as a simple greeting, the guard wondering why it
hadn't just been spoken aloud as he moved onto the rest, him
deciphering the text as a mention of an asteroid the pony was
keeping track of. "Asteroid, huh?" Gladius spoke up, pulling his
head back and glancing up as if to spot such a thing for
himself, "I'll take that as you not just admiring how pretty the
stars are and actually know what you're doing with that
telescope then. Could you answer a question for me?" He began to
asked, looking down at the stallion then half turning around so
as to point up at and line up his hoof with a section of the
sky, the lights above forming a pattern to those who have
trained their eyes to notice. "You wouldn't happen to know the
name of that constellation there would you? It's starting to bug
me with how its just been on the tip of my tongue."

Woodwind gives a small sigh and attempts to angle the notebook
to catch the light a little better, hopefully allowing Gladius
to read it. It had always been annoying trying to communicate in
the dark, at least with anypony who didn't know morse code. He
considers the advantages of bringing a lantern next time he
comes out here and gives an enthusiastic nod. Leaning a little
closer and following the larger stallion's hoof, Woodwind's eyes
easily pick out the constellation the guard was wondering about,
and after a moment he goes back to the notebook. 'That's Aries,
the ram.' He writes, making sure to hold the page out so enough
light hits it to read. He doesn't leave it out for long though,
instead frowning and pulling it back to add a 'Do you know morse
code?' to it. The orange stallion was a guard after all, so
maybe he'd have been taught it.

Squinting again to try and read the writing, but this time not
having quite as hard of a time from how he was both how the
other stallion was holding it and how he was ready to read it,
Gladius squinted again and scanned the page for the ponies
answer, "Ah!' He exclaimed in realization, the correct name for
the constellation of stars that had been bothering him, of
course, now feeling obvious and as clear as the day that had
left Equestria hours before. "Aries. Duh. Now I just feel
silly." the orange pegasus chuckled a bit as the other stallion
pulled back his notebook then showed it to him again with a
question of his own. More squinting, an unsure "uhh..." and then
finally, "Some. Ive got a simple grasp on it for most
situations, but I'm far from a master of tapping." To
demonstrate, Gladius gave a few taps of his hoof to sound out
'Hello. My name' "Gladius." finishing with his voice to make
sure he didn't mess it up.

Woodwind gives a nod and watches Gladius' hoof tap on the
ground, smiling a little when the guard doesn't do too bad. 'I'm
Woodwind. The light-brown stallion taps back, his smile widening
just a little. Hopefully Gladius had gotten that. He pauses for
a moment then writes the same thing in the notebook, just in
case, and glances up at the sky. Thankfully there were no clouds
anywhere near the moon, so they didn't have to worry about
losing that method of communication for a while if the morse
code didn't work out. After another couple moments he smiles
again and taps out a follow up 'So do you like astronomy?'

Woodbend? Odd name... Maybe his parents were some kind of
carpenters? Eh, Gladius nearly shrugged, either- wait... He
interrupted his own thoughts when the other stallion showed him
his notebook again. Oooh, Woodwind was his name. That sounded
much more natural. Well, he'd gotten... uh... half of it right
from the Morse code, and everything else would probably be
easier to deduce to the correct word should he stumble again, so
code should work well enough for communication in the dark.
Hopefully. "A pleasure to meet you, Woodwind," he replied,
smiling then again looking up at the sky, "and I find astronomy
to be interesting, though never took any dedicated interest in
learning it. I did however have some extra bits tagged onto mg
training that taught me some navigation using constellations, so
I have a moderate knowledge of what shapes up there are called
what. Except Aries it seems. Heh," Gladius narrowed his eyes at
the group of stars in question then turned back to Woodwind. "I
take it this is a bigger thing for you though since you're
tracking an asteroid and all. Where is it by the way? Os it
visible using only the naked eye?"

Woodwind puts his hoof out for Gladius to shake, nodding in
agreement when the guard says it's a pleasure to meet him.
Letting go of the guard's hoof, his own gaze goes back to the
sky for a few moments, and he spends a few seconds just watching
the twinkling lights above them. Turning his attention back to
Gladius, Woodwind's smile widens slightly at the guard's joke,
and he nods in response to his question. He turns and trots back
over to the telescope, beckoning Gladius to follow. He takes a
moment to peer into the telescope, finding the asteroid again
before moving aside and pointing to the telescope, indicating
that Gladius should have a look.
