"You both make good points," Ironfire nodded along, "since you
consider yourself a chisel Thunder, why don't you put your
armour on and I'll hit you with my hammer. Start carving out
those new memories," he chuckled, unable to get through it with
a straight face, "oh sweet Celestia, I'm sorry. I've just never
seen a pony so attached to a hunk of junk like that was before,"

Thunder narrowed his eyes a bot at Ryo's idea, about to shoot it
down only to stop and think about it. The thinking about it was
eventually moved towards a tapping of his chin over it then a
humming as he rolled the "empty canvas" idea around in his head
some. "... Maybe..." he eventually replied, eyes flicking
towards his armor a few times, "I suppose that could work... It
would be something to strive for at least..."
When Ironfire spoke up with his disbelief over a stallion being
so attached to what was apparently to him just hammered metal,
Thunder gave him a very un-Thundery expression that severely
lacked amusement. "That 'hunk of junk' saved my life more times
than you've probably even had yours threatened before," he said,
stepping closer to his armor and turning his gaze onto it as he
spoke, "so maybe it carries some extra value to me. It was
unique. It showed what I'd been through with it. It stood out.
Had character. Stories. And now... Now it just blends in with
every other guard's armor..." Sighing and sitting down, Thunder
pressed a hoof on his armor as he thought about all the "dents"
and "scratches" that nopony else saw as anything more than
flaws.
"Thunder," Mana said, pulling his partner from his thoughts,
"pay the stallion. Then we can go back to damaging your suit."
"Ah, gee, about that..." Thunder replied, pretending to look
forgetful as he turned back to Mana, "I kinda left my bit pouch
in that temp suit I was wearing, so..."
"Thunder."
With another sigh, Thunder reached into the saddle bags and
rummaged around for his money, finding it not long after then
pulling it out and allowing it to just hang in his teeth for a
short time before reluctantly going about counting out the
necessary number of bits.

"You should remember sentimentality is only good for a few
things," Ironfire explains, accepting the bits from Thunder,
"weapons, tools and armour, not so much. They all require
periodic maintenance if they're to continue to be useful. Your
attachment to it in that run down state is only going to get you
killed. And that's a when, not an if," he cautioned, "if you're
so attached to the wrecked state of it, why not get an armour
stand and fork out the many hundreds more bits required for an
entirely new replacement suit," he helpfully suggested, "this
hammer of mine was made by my grandfather, and given to my
father and eventually me. I still replace the handle when it
breaks or gets too worn. And, if I ever do manage to crack the
hammer head, I'll replace or reforge that. The sentimental value
I give it certainly isn't going to make it work any better when
it's broken,"

"... Whatever..." Thunder replied with a sigh, the stallion
recognizing that this conversation was obviously going to go
nowhere as he just paid his bits then went back to his suit. Way
he saw it, his suit worked fine before it was repaired and had
stood out on its own due to it being difficult not too, and the
pegasus guard had full confidence it would have continued to
perform just fine without being polished up and made all...
blegh... shiny... Being spoken to as if he was new to his job
didn't make him any happier either, having a blacksmith explain
why broken equipment was broken and therefore bad. Duh. Thing
was that his armor hadn't been broken. Just dinged up. His
helpful suggestion also did little, as armor stands are what
retired guards put their money into so as to stare at their
suits and sigh while thinking of theur old glory days. And
finally, to Thunder at least, if what Iron was saying about his
hammer was true, then he was going to lose his grandfather's
hammer at some point. The pegasus saw a clear difference between
repair and replace, and if you give a hammer a new handle and
head while discarding the old, then you don't have that hammer
anymore. You have a new hammer that youre trying to have take
the old ones place while pretending you hadn't thrown the
original one away.
Mana sighed. He knew Thunder would get over this, he always did,
but he still didn't like seeing his best friend get so upset
over such things. "Anyway," he spoke up to try and move things
along, "I hope my gems didn't give you any trouble when they
were being pulled out of the boots. Did anything happen magic
wise? Any sudden spasms of arcane energy or short lived
possessing and animating of nearby tools? I don't see any
missing here, so none of them exploded from what I can tell. Not
that they would have, of course, but you know, magic can get
antsy whenever the mood strikes it."

Ryo's ears perked up when Mana mentioned the gems. With curious
eyes she looked at Ironfire, waiting for him to give Mana his
response.

Ironfire's attention quickly switched over to Mana at the
question, "they're magical gems. Nothing unexpected, anyway..."
he paused for a moment, looking at Mana closely, "why? Where you
expecting something to happen?" he questioned, wondering if
there was supposed to be some form of protection on them or
something similar.

Taly was out and about this afternoon in her armor the older
pony did notquite have anywhere to fky tonight so she was just
loosely patrolling canterlot since she had not been back in some
time, having spent a great deal of time away on duty elsewhere.
Her armor retained its kuster through her own polishing however
the armor itse,f showed gouges in places where she had
deliberately ignored repairing since the gouges reminded he
rofnpast battles fought, other dents and dings were repaired
however. Tonight she was visiting the shop of one 'Ironfire' and
now as she found it she gently made hernway in, her bat wing
sfolded wgainst herself, her mane cut short for militaryy duty.
"Allo? Iz anyone here,,?"

Mana chuckled a little, though its tone made it possible to
guess that it wasn't one hundred percent real as he waved off
Irons question. "What? No, no, no, don't be silly, I wouldn't
have had you handle then if I thought something would have
happened when you removed them. No, I was asking just in case.
You know, magic can soemtimes decide to just change the rules on
a whim, so you never know if it may have decided to play around
with somepony when you turn your back on it." Good, nothing had
happened. Means he must have solved that screechy problem over
the Topaz...
"There's business knocking st your door," Thunder alerted Iron
in case he hadn't heard the pony at the entrance of his forge,
the pegasus guard not taking his eyes off of his armor as he
gave a small jerk his head in the direction of the source...
Maybe if he tossed it over the city edge and let it tumble down
the mountain side... That could punch some interesting back into
his armor... Then again, he remembered Mana using such an idea
as an example of him neglecting his armor the last time they
were here, so maybe it would be best if he held off on going
through with it so as not to let the other guard believe himself
to be right about stuff. He does that too often as it is.

Ryo had moved next to Mana and looked at the stallion to her her
right as he was giving Iron his response. She was getting
curious about the gems now that Mana had given such vague
answer, but before she had a chance to ask, Thunder pointed out
that there was new customer at Iron's door. After getting a
glimpse at the new arrival, Ryo's ears pinned down and she
lowered her head in feeble attempt to hide behind Mana from the
just arrived night guard. She had never run into a night guard
before, but from what she had heard, they were even meaner than
the regular guards during the day.

Looking between his current guests and the new arrival, Ironfire
steps forward to greet the night guard, "Welcome along to my
forge," he greets her, "and what can I do for you on this fine
day?" he questions, looking over the armour, thinking he could
likely make an educated guess.
