Re: New Town, New Trouble

"Germane?" Foxtrot says, "I haven't heard Germane in years.
Being multilingual is a good skill to have; I just know
Tropicolto, Saddle Arabian, and five Prench words." He looks
forward, reading the street sign and trying to remember if he
knew enough of the area. "Huh... I have no idea where we are.
Well then..." The unicorn waves over to one of the cart owners
nearby, "Excuse me ma'am, is there an inn around here?"
"Yea, the closest one is by the markets! Once you reach a giant
water fountain you should be able to see it." she says as she
points down the road behind him.
"Thanks." Foxtrot blankly replies. He looks back forward and
facehoofs, 'I was there for like 15 minutes and I didn't
notice!'. The unicorn then drops his hoof and looks back at
Mesa, "Well, I guess we're walking back. Did you have any more
questions you wanted to ask?"

Mesa threw another impressed glance towards Foxtrot upon hearing
about his language abilities, though she supposed she shouldn't
be so surprised at this point. As Foxtrot called out to the cart
owner, Mesa glanced around at the unfamiliar surroundings,
before looking at the helpful pony in disbelief when she heard
where the inn was. She shook her head before starting to laugh.
"Heh, we're sure observant ones, aren't we? Yeah, I guess we
should head back."
Not that Mesa really minded, talking to Foxtrot had been
genuinely enjoyable. She turned around and was about to start
trotting again when she heard the stallion's question. "Oh,
um... I think I'm good." Mesa was still a little shocked at
Foxtrot's last answer, but she chastised herself for being so
surprised. I shouldn't have asked if I wasn't prepared for the
answer. A job like Foxtrot's can't be all sunshine and roses.
Starting to walk back to the fountain, and making sure to pay a
bit more attention to her surroundings this time, Mesa added,
"But thanks for satisfying my rampant curiosity. Do you have any
questions for me? I certainly don't have as exciting answers as
you do, but you're welcome to ask."

"Why I do have a question or two for you." Foxtrot retorts as he
continues walking. "Ok, first question, how far can you hit with
that crossbow? I can get a few dozen meters no problem but add
wind and I'm screwed." He pauses, "Also uh, what happened to
your ear? If you don't mind me asking?"

Mesa considered the question for a moment, actually having to
think about it before answering. When she was using her bow to
defend herself, she relied more on instinct than numbers. "Well,
if there's not too much wind, I can hit a moving object at 50
meters without too much effort. Stationary objects, or targets
on a range when I'm not under any pressure to aim and fire
quickly... Probably around 80 meters."
Mesa looked surprised at the question about her ear, flicking it
as her eyes travelled to Foxtrot's own nick. She had noticed
earlier, but hadn't given it much thought. "We match," she said
with a chuckle, before quickly growing quiet as she remembered
the nearest she had ever been to being killed. "It was an Ursa
Major," she said slowly, the humor gone from her voice. "Three
years ago." She shook her head. "I was incredibly lucky to get
out alive...." She was silent for a moment before looking at
Foxtrot. "What about you? Where did you get yours?" She
regretted her question almost immediately, wondering if it would
have another answer she didn't want to hear.

"How did I get mine? Well..." Foxtrot pauses for a moment. "Well
it was during my work in the Royal Guard. We just completed a
mission near the border and were celebrating. Me already
intoxicated wandered through a bazaar and came across some old,
rambling griffon. He had a peg leg, tattoos and a weird red eye,
kinda like a snake. Anyways he offers me this cool guitar if I
can beat him in cards." The unicorn scratches his head, "I think
he wanted either my eternal soul or my eternal bowl if he won, I
can't remember which. So we played a mean game of Go Fish since
I was completely hammered and any other card game was quote
unquote 'beneath' my status. In the end I won and got this
guitar. He gave it to me by bashing it over my head. Next thing
I knew I was waking up in a nearby field with my new instrument
and a piece of my ear missing." He shrugs, "But yea that was a
pretty crazy Monday night. Not as crazy as those ranges you said
you could hit. I mean, 80 meters? That's just... Impressive."

Mesa listened with an expression of disbelief throughout
Foxtrot's story. "That does sound like some night. That's good
you didn't lose your eternal bowl," she said with a small
giggle, though she wasn't entirely sure if she believed him. She
tilted her head, scruntinizing the stallion's ear. "It's such a
clean cut, like it was removed intentionally..." She shrugged
the mystery off, then blushed slightly at the compliment of her
range. "Well, I've had a lot of practice. Your range really
isn't bad either, most ponies can't get a few dozen meters
without a good amount of practice and natural skill. And I
imagine you're not too bad with that katana, either," she said,
motioning to it.

Foxtrot grins as he glances to his katana, "Yea, training helps
kill a lot of the downtime between missions. I haven't actually
used the blade for some time, just about over a year now." He
shrugs as he looks back forward, "The sheath itself works fine
for defense though. I tend to use that more often in fights." He
begins to see the edge of the markets, some carts still filled
with fresh food give the unicorn another question to ask. "Ok
here's another question, favorite food?"

Mesa's ears perked up curiously at the mention of when Foxtrot
last used his katana. At this point, she was wondering if he
kept rousing her curiosity intentionally. But she was sure
Foxtrot would be starting to tire of all her questions, and she
could see they were starting to approach the market, so she
reluctantly let it go. She did raise her eyebrows at the thought
of using the katana's sheath as well as its blade. "Huh, I don't
think I've ever seen that."
Foxtrot's question startled her, as she stared at him for a
moment before answering. "Um, I don't know..." Mesa generally
lived off the land when she was traveling, eating grass and
berries and roots. Food was food was food. But she suddenly
brightened as she thought of something. "I often use this tiny
town down south, Dodge Junction, as a rest stop. They have a
cherry farm there that makes these incredible cherry scones.
Fancier than what I usually eat, but I can't resist getting at
least one every time I pass through," she admitted. "Or a cherry
anything, really. I love their taste." The pair reached the edge
of the markets and Mesa looked around attentively, trying to add
to her mental map of the town.

As the two proceeds through the markets, Foxtrot spots the
fountain he was performing at earlier. Of course behind the
fountain a short distance away was the inn. "Well, there it is.
I'm surprised I didn't even notice the sign." He glances over to
Mesa, "Alright it mighve taken much longer but there it is."

Mesa caught sight of the inn, shaking her head at herself as she
saw how close it was to the fountain. "Yeah, I'm surprised I
didn't notice it either." She started trotting towards it,
glancing back at Foxtrot. "Thanks for your help." She grinned.
"Who knows how long I would've wandered around for before it
occurred to me to ask for directions? Anyway, will you be
getting a room too, or do you already have a place to stay?"
