Re: New Town, New Trouble

"Agent Foxtrot, ah jeez." Foxtrot lightly chuckles at Mesa's
reaction, looking away actually to hide the growing blush he
surprisingly got himself. His ears folding back didn't help at
concealing his calm facade as the mare compared his work to a
Daring Do book. When she finishes he keeps looking down for a
moment as he tries to regain his cool composure. When he does he
turns back to Mesa, "I wouldn't say it's as exciting as one of
A.K. Yearling's works. Most of the time spent in Saddle Arabia
was planning and training and doing nothing. Then there's the
paperwork..." Foxtrot rolls his eyes as he recalls the reports
he had to write during his time in Equestria, which was equally
as annoying. "As for questions I don't mind answering them. But
only under two conditions; one is that if I actually can't
answer it then I'll just say the standard "It's classified;" two
is that for every question answered you must tell me something
unique about yourself."

Mesa didn't seem to notice Foxtrot's embarrassment, just kept
trotting while occasionally glancing around for anything that
might resemble an inn. She threw a sympathetic glance towards
the stallion at the mention of paperwork. She wasn't very good
at reading or writing herself, not needing to do it much in her
line of work. At Foxtrot's proposal, Mesa tilted her head in
consideration, before letting out an exaggerated sigh.
"You drive a hard bargain, Agent, but all right," she teased,
then became quiet for a few moments as she considered what
question to ask. "Okay, here's one. How did you get recruited?"
Then she paused again, mentally searching for something to tell
him about herself. Finally settling on something trivial, Mesa
added, "I've never liked sweet things, not even as a filly.
Chocolate and candy make me sick." She grinned at Foxtrot. "Your
turn. If you can answer, maybe I'll even give you something
interesting next time."

Foxtrot slightly nods as he's asked Mesa's question.
"Recruitment? Alright well officially they hoof select
individuals from allied militaries. High educational scores,
combat experience, reccomendations and accumulated training are
considered as well. As for myself, well I met their
requirements, and an uncle who's already a senior agent in The
26." He pauses for a moment, "Overall I just got a letter;
however it did say that if I deny the opportunity I must swear
that I never was contacted by them if asked." The unicorn looks
over to Mesa, "Next question? Oh and I must say that your tidbit
about yourself is rather helpful actually."

Mesa listened curiously, her respect for Foxtrot growing as he
went on. Her eyebrows went up at hearing what he would have had
to do if he had refused to join. It seemed like a very secret
organization. I hope it's really okay that he's telling me this,
she thought. I don't want to get him in trouble.
Her expression shifted to one of surprise at Foxtrot's last
comment. She couldn't think of any situation where such
information could be useful, but Mesa shrugged it off. "Alright,
I have to ask something. Do you get cool high-tech gadgets and
weapons, or is that just a thing in the films?" She eyed his
katana with mock suspicion, before continuong. "And let's see...
I got turned into stone by a cockatrice several years ago. And I
stayed like that for three whole days." She shuddered slightly
at the memory. "I don't think a lot of ponies can say that."

Foxtrot's eyebrows definitely rose when he hears that Mesa was
turned to stone, "For three whole days!? I can't imagine being
turned to stone... Well I've been turned into candy once but I
think that's a different scenario." The unicorn looks at his
backpack when he thinks about the gear he usually works with.
"Definitely not the exact same equipment. The movies have a
bigger budget then us with the tech they're sporting. But we do
have a research department that give us some cool things." With
a small laugh he continues, "On my first assignment actually I
was given artificial wings made of canvas and bamboo." He sighs
as he remembers his experience with it. Gliding in the open
desert over the sand dunes at night underneath the clear starry
sky... It was like swimming between two oceans."

Mesa stared at Foxtrot, sure she had misheard him. "You got
turned into candy?" That sounded worse than stone, in Mesa's
opinion. What if somepony tried to eat you? She couldn't help
but look disappointed at the fact that Foxtrot didn't get the
same equipment as spies in the movies. But she brightened as
Foxtrot told her about his wings. "That sounds beautiful," she
breathed softly, closing her eyes so she could picture it
better. She felt a faint itching in her hooves and wings, like
they wanted Mesa to run to the nearest desert to try to see what
Foxtrot had seen. Rather abruptly, Mesa suddenly said, "So what
was that first assignment?" She opened her eyes before she could
run into anypony, looking over at Foxtrot.

Foxtrot looks forward, his gaze distant while he remembers his
mission. "There was a sultan who provided fuel and resources to
our forces. His wife was kidnapped and held for ransom. It was
my job to head to the mountains where she was kept and bring her
back..." Foxtrot takes a deep breath as he continues, "I managed
to sneak her out of their base as outgoing cargo, but I got
caught in the process. Heh, I knew I wasn't going to make it, so
I gave her my map, the hideouts location was already marked..."
Foxtrot remains silent for a moment, "The rest was just...
Trying not to break."

Mesa was a little surprised when Foxtrot answered- she had
expected him to not answer such a specific question. But as
Foxtrot continued, Mesa's face went from fascinated to confused.
"Break? What do you-" She stopped abruptly, them quickly lowered
her gaze to try conceal the flash of horror she felt. And did
you break? The question came to her unbidden, but Mesa knew she
couldn't ask that. "That's... awful. I mean it's good you found
her, but..." She trailed off, then fell silent. Her ever-present
curiosity made her want to ask more about it, but it seemed
unlikely Foxtrot would want to talk about it. Searching her mind
for a way to change the topic, but coming up blank, she just
stared at the cobblestones awkwardly.

Foxtrot glanced to Mesa, not very surprised at her reaction. He
then looks forward, his tone rather laid back and frank, "Yea
the flank kicking I got after that sucked, but... It came with
the job; I just remembered my training during interrogations and
torture." The unicorn pauses, ending his silence with a chuckle,
"But I did get out though, and I escaped usin those wings I told
you about. That was when I had that awesome experience I just
told you about." Foxtrot looks up, "That's the thing about being
an Agent. You experience the best and worst the world has to
offer." His ears suddenly perk up, "Oh, I believe it's your turn
to tell a fun fact about yourself."

Mesa flinched at the word 'torture', but she slowly looked back
up at Foxtrot's frank tone and chuckle. "I guess that makes
sense," she murmured. "You won't recognize the good if you
haven't seen the bad." She wasn't sure she liked the slightly
more somber tone the conversation had taken, and she looked
grateful when Foxtrot mentioned that it was Mesa's turn to give
a fact about herself.
"Um, let's see... I know bits of a few languages," she said,
before sheepishly adding, "But I've never had the patience to
sit down and become fluent in any of them. I sometimes meet
foreigners in my line of work, so I have to know enough basics
to communicate with them. I'm probably best in Germane." She
started looking around as she spoke, having gotten so wrapped up
in the conversation that she had almost forgotten what she and
Foxtrot had been looking for in the first place.
