New Town, New Trouble
By: Foxtrot Date: February 17, 2014, 11:18 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Now in a town he has little to no knowledge of, Foxtrot's first
instinct is to get to know the streets, buildings, nooks and
crannies in case he ever has to run through them at some point.
Normally he'd bound over the rooftops and such, but his sore
shoulder suggested otherwise. Going for a more casual route, the
unicorn trots to the markets and finds himself near one of the
water fountains. "Huh, well I might as well earn some bits while
I'm here." Foxtrot rests his things against the side of the
fountain and sits down as he pulls out his guitar. "Let's
see..." he plucks a few strings before stopping once more. "How
about a classic." the unicorn says to himself as he begins
playing the Fur Elise with a light change here and there.

A brown pegasus wandered the streets, her usually watchful
expression replaced with a more relaxed one. She gave a friendly
smile to everypony she passed, her hooves making clicking sounds
against the cobblestones as she wandered the town. Mesa knew she
would have to find a place to stay by the end of the day, but
for now she was content with relaxing and taking in the sights
of the quaint town. She was on vacation, after all.
Faint guitar chords, carried by the slight breeze, caused Mesa
to prick her ears curiously. She quickened her trot, changing
her course to follow the sound. She rounded a corner to see a
tan unicorn with a guitar, and she couldn't help but smile
slightly. Good music was often a luxury she didn't have time
for, and she had always been partial to the soothing music
guitars made. She approached Foxtrot slowly, stopping to stand a
few feet away and closing her blue eyes. The melody sounded
mildly familiar, but Mesa couldn't quite put her hoof on where
she had heard it before. She felt her muscles relax as the
calming song continued, and Mesa's smile grew wider as she sat
down to listen.

With eyes closed Foxtrot concludes the song and takes a deep
breath before looking up to find somepony sitting in front of
him. "Hoped you liked it. It's been months since I've played
that, I want sure I'd memorize it all." He continues plucks his
strings lightly to create an ambient background tune as he
continued, "If you have any requests you can go ahead and ask.
I'm not really doing anything at the moment."

As the song finished, Mesa slowly opened her eyes again, still
smiling. "That was beautiful," she told Foxtrot. She raised one
eyebrow at his words. "A few months and you still remember it?
That's impressive." She wondered briefly if he had a musical
cutie mark, then heard Foxtrot offer to do a request. She
paused, tapping her hoof against her chin thoughtfully. "I'm
not very well-versed in music, I'm afraid, so I don't know many
song names. But what about another relaxing one?" She suggested
with a smile. "Oh!" She said suddenly, shifting the crossbow
buckled to her side to get to the saddlebags underneath. She dug
inside them for a moment, before retrieving a few bits and
offering them to Foxtrot.

Foxtrot smiles and raises his hoof when Mesa offers some bits.
"Thanks but I'm just doing this for fun right now. You don't
have to pay anything." He looks at his instrument for a moment
as he plucks some strings, biting his lip as he thinks of what
to play next. After a pause of silence the unicorn begins again
with another relaxing melody.

As he plays he looks over to the mare giving a quick glance at
her crossbow for a moment before speaking again. "If I may ma'am
there's something I'd like to ask you. It's very important
actually..." Foxtrot doesn't say a thin for a moment before
asking in a slightly excited manner, sitting up straight as
well, "Where did you get that crossbow? It looks like a very
excellent piece of equipment I must admit."

At Foxtrot's refusal, Mesa hesitated, looking like she was about
to protest. But finally shrugging it off, she returned the bits
to her bag and sighed in contentment as Foxtrot began the new
song. At the 'ma'am', she made a face of mock annoyance.
"'Ma'am'? Do I look that old?" She gave a small chuckle to let
Foxtrot know she was kidding, before looking at him expectantly.
Her eyebrows went up at the mention of the question's
importance. "Yes?" As Foxtrot continued, Mesa grinned. Most
ponies didn't carry their weapons as visibly as Mesa did, and
she had received her fair share of uneasy and suspicious glances
as a result. But a pony that could appreciate its good
workmanship... it was like a breath of fresh air. "It's a
wonderful bow. Very hardy. I got it off an arms dealer in Dodge
Junction a few years ago. Said that it was one-of-a-kind, hoof
made by a zebra up North. Last one the zebra ever made,
actually. Died of fever a few weeks after."
Mesa absentmindedly ran one hoof over the crossbow before
continuing, "Of course, dealers will tell you anything to get
you to buy their wares, but I honestly don't care if it's true
or not. Either way, it's served me well. Great balance and very
quiet..." Mesa trailed off with the slightest blush, aware she
had gone off on a bit of a tangent. "Sorry, got a bit distracted
there. But yeah, from a dealer in Dodge." She was quiet for a
moment, enjoying the soothing music before venturing, "...why?
Are you a bow enthusiast?"

"Well I'm a bit of a bladespony myself." Foxtrot answers,
nodding to the sheathed katana on his side. "But in my
profession I've used crossbows enough to know a good one when I
see it." He glances over to to her flank to see her cutie mark,
"And I'm guessing by your mark that the quality of that bow
matches the skills of the user herself?" The unicorn plucks a
few more strings to keep the ambient tunes going while pauses
for a moment before chuckling, "And ma'am, mademoiselle,
senorita, whichever you prefer; I was not implying you were old.
However, if by some chance you are then I must admit that you
have aged like the finest of Prench wines." Foxtrot then shrugs,
"But you look like your in your prime so that's good too."

Mesa glanced over the katana curiously. Though she usually
carried a blade, it was more of a last resort than anything. She
had always admired ponies that could handle long blades. Of
course, it must be easier for a unicorn, she reflected. Her eyes
brightened when Foxtrot mentioned his experience with crossbows.
"Oh? Are you any good? And what profession is that?" She asked
curiously, before hastily adding, "If you don't mind me asking,
that is." Mesa knew that she could sometimes be too nosy for her
own good. She smiled at the question. "I'd like to think I'm as
good as the bow, but I might be slightly biased. And... thank
you? I don't think I've been compared to Prench wine before..."
She said with a chuckle.

Foxtrot lightly laughs, "Well I wouldn't say good, but I do get
my lucky shots here and there. I know as much as any Royal Guard
soldier; I've been in the service for the past 5 years. I left
about a year ago and I'm currently working in a similar field."
He shakes his head and facehoofs, "I'm sorry I don't think I
introduced myself. My name's Foxtrot and It's nice to meet you."

Mesa listened interestedly, a trace of respect evident on her
face at Foxtrot's mention of being a Royal Guard. "You were a
guard? I bet you have some great stories..." Her curiosity was
piqued at the vague response of what Foxtrot was doing now, but
she didn't press the issue.
"My name's Mesa. A pleasure to meet you, Foxtrot," she said,
then suddenly brightened. "Oh! Since you're local, and I'm
thinking of it, I might as well ask. I just got here a couple of
hours ago, and I'm looking for a place to stay. I'm just here
for a short vacation. Is there a nice inn around here?" She
looked at Foxtrot expectantly, assuming that he lived in
Ponyville.
