As Haywire explained all that he'd need to do to get the...
'lifty machine' cooperating again, Star just nodded slowly as he
went along, her eyes almost glazing over as result of being
lost. Especially since what he was actually doing seemed to make
no sense. But he was the expert here, right? She then watched as
he began tapping out the 'super secret tap', which to her
surprise resulted in the machine responding in much of the same
fashion. She wondered briefly if--judging by the machine's
reaction and the fact that Haywire was steadily going faster and
faster--what Hay was doing could be related to something
naughty, but she scolded herself for that with a scrunch of her
nose, telling herself that was highly inappropriate and uncalled
for, and that a better analogy would be a dog kicking its leg as
it was scratched.
Her inner scoldings were cut short as the machine, despite
Haywire's efforts, shot up into the air. Far up above any of the
houses it now dwarfed. "I guess I see now why you requested my
help," she said as she held her head back to stare up at the top
of the 'lifty machine' while Haywire explained what she'd need
to do. Find control panel, push buttons. But what about levers?
He mentioned that was the part that Bubo had trouble with...
Well, she was the one that always helped other ponies, and she
usually got by with less direction than that--plus she'd have
Bubo up there with her, it seemed, so it shouldn't be too hard
to figure out what to do. "You know, you're gonna have to tell
me what this thing's for when I fix it," she said before
spreading her wings and pushing off of the ground with a
'whoosh'.
With mighty beats of her large wings, Star steadily made her way
up to the top of the machine, making slow spirals around it to
make her ascent easier. Upon reaching the top she landed and,
likely with a few questions tossed Bubo's way about how to get
to the control panel in the middle, opened up the console with
the 'blinky lights' before turning her head a bit and coughing.
What was with this smoke? She hadn't seen any smoke like this
earlier... Or at least, she hadn't noticed any. Shrugging it
off, she then began to push the different lights as they lit up,
turning her head every so often to cough.

"That will be a short and easy explanation!" Hay replied
cheerily before Star took off, the inventor then occupying
himself with just watching that one blinky light in the corner
of his grounded control panel that always did what it do,
shifting between colors and mixing up its pattern to stay
interesting, Hay watching the simple little distraction with a
smile as the pegasus assisting him ascended higher and higher.
Meanwhile, atop the platform, Bubo was doing his darndest to
loosen then pry the panel in the center of the platform free in
order to reach the control panel hiding beneath. Going from
screw to screw, as it was of course normal to cover and seal
control panels beneath metal so as to make it an adventure to
open, the mechanical bird would stick his beak into the grooves
of the screws then hop small circles around them in order to
twist them free. He'd gotten several out by the time Star joined
him, the smoke leaking out of the edges pf the panel of course
not bothering him but succeeding in giving him a sooty
appearance as whatever questions she asked was met with either
chirps or guiding pecks of his beak.
Once free of the panel holding it down, the platforms controls
rose up out of the center in a cloud of smoke and whir of
machinery, Bubo then perching again onto it similarly to how he
had with the first. From the moment it was freed, the control
panel and its many installed lights were flashing a slow and
easy to remember pattern between only two, one green and the
other yellow, as Haywire from far below them was punching in the
same commands from the first set of buttons and levers, less to
actually do anything, the combination being meant for causing an
internal and useless oven installed within the lifty machine to
be set to "bake", but the little green pony was using it more as
a signal waiting for a response to know when Star and Bubo were
ready. When he received the same colors being sent back to his
end from the assistants, he giggled and clapped his hooves a
couple times before sending his actual instructions up to them
via colored lights. Red twice for two buttons with little piston
pictures engraved into them, blue by one with wavy lines, green
on one with a weird looking picture of a mish lash of... stuff,
several quick yellows near a group of small little switches, and
a curving arrow near a dial letting them know to turn it with
gusto.
Like with the tapping from earlier, it started slow then sped up
as Haywire grew more confident in Star's ability to keep up, it
eventually leading up to a couple of lights near two of the
larger levers indicating that they were next on the
to-press/switch/smack around a bit list, a small posty note next
to them with the simple message of 'Sorry Bubo :(' being quite
possibly too shrouded in smoke to make out. Bubo, seeing the
lights, hopped down onto the panel and over towards one of the
levers, the bird being careful not to step on any of the other
buttons as he made his way over. Once close enough he seemed
undecided on how exactly to go about pulling or pushing said
lever, his lack of hooves and its angles position preventing him
from being able to get a good grip. On top of that they were
stubborn, the levers being a chore to pull even for full grown
ponies, all of this adding up to this always being a real pain
for the bird to ever handle on his own. With Star there he hoped
it at least wouldn't take forever like it usually did.
Deciding to start off with just pressing his back against it
then flapping his wings to try and provide the power needed to
push the lever into the correct orientation, Bubo did so, only
for then to be the moment where the lifty machine wised up to
what was happening. It groaned, possibly as some kind of
warning, then started to shudder its platform as some kind of
message for them get of its back and stop trying to ruin its
fun. When they failed to do as it commanded within the couple of
seconds allowed, the lifty machine suddenly titled its platform
left and right several times before dropping several feet to
take the platform out from under the pony bugging it. Wings or
no, the machine believed it would at least get its point across.
During the sudden ride, Bubo rolled off the control panel, him
being too distracted to catch his grip on anything but
recovering relatively quickly in the air with a few flaps of his
wings.
With a drop in altitude, the sudden display of defiance doing
little to either surprise or scare off the metal avian, Bubo
came down to hover over the control panel where he'd look to
check on Star. Normally that didn't happen, despite Bubo always
being ready for it, but the lifty machine must have been able to
tell it had meddlers from how it could feel an actual pony
present on its platform. Bubo was useless for pulling the levers
now that his wings were needed for staying airborne, so he just
chirpped towards Star to try and instruct for her to do as he
was doing, her hooves being their only hope now. The lights on
the control panel continued to blink and flash, continuing to
indicate the correct levers needed to hopefully get the machine
to cooperate, though now it was being sent faster but with
longer pauses in between, Haywire being concerned over what
happened and hoping the pegasus above him hadn't stubbed a hoof
or bumped a knee on anything when the lifty machine decided it
was done with her being on it. It was possible that his
invention had gotten just a little too used to how surprisingly
durable the small stallion was after all...

Following the instructions being given to her, Star obediently
pressed the buttons in front of her, almost feeling for a moment
like she was playing a game of Simon Says. However, as this
wasn't a game, Star very seriously pushed the buttons in the
order given, the process being the most serious anypony in the
history of forever could have been. As a result of this
concentration, she didn't really comprehend that she was
supposed to be pulling the lever. She just kept pressing the
blinking lights in question, thinking it was a little bit odd
that Hay was pressing them so many times. By the time she really
noticed Bubo and that he was trying to actually make the lever
move, it had become much too late.
As she moved her hoof out to help the bird with the lever, the
machine began to descend quickly underneath her, causing her to
inhale sharply as she instinctively flexed her wings out and
lifted herself into the air. She watched the machine for a few
moments after it fell still once more before huffing sourly at
it and descending. Once there, she pulled at the lever with all
of her might, then did whatever else she needed while still
hovering in the air before finally moving back down to where
Haywire was once the machine had been sorted out. "I... still
have no idea what this thing is," she said, her face looking
quite sooty after having spent all that time up on the top of
the machine and in its smoke.

Bubo hung back as Star left to speak with Haywire, the hard part
of pulling the stubborn levers having past and no longer
worrying him, the mechanical bird felt confident thst he could
handle any other button presses that his creator may require.
With the absence of the mare on the platform it became safer, or
at least more stable, for Bubo to drop back onto the control
panel where he watched and waited to see if he'd need to hop
onto any more flashing lights. Meanwhile, below them, Haywire
had gone from concerned over the sudden drop to grinning
ecstaticly when he noticed both how his own control panel was
actually starting to respond to his commands now and how the his
current assistant was coming back down to ground level with no
apparent boo boos. Being safe in the knowledge that his
invention hadn't been rough with her, the inventor focused back
onto the mess of buttons, dials, levers and flashing colors in
front of him, another seemingly random sequence of commands
being punched in while his ears angled to listen to the mare.
"Well, its a lifty machine!" Haywire reminded, as if that would
solve her confusion right then and there, the little green pony
remembering how rarely that actually worked and deciding to
elaborate in his own way, "It liftys!" Body language was used
to demonstrate with his front hooves being raised up as high as
they could, "I made it to hopefully be able to help ponies
moving cargo and heavy things at places like docks and
warehouses," a continuing of his button pressing, the lifty
machine responding with rebellious grinding of metal, "for the
stuff that's too heavy to get anywhere fast. It could also just
be used to help window cleaners, help fireponies fight fires,
help tree trimmers trim high tree branches, help painters paint
high up without balancing on ladders and needing to climb down
for different paints, anything that could use a lifting
platform, so a bunch of stuff I'm hoping! Or, at least, it will
once I manage to add wheels to it someday and hopefully make it
a little smaller. Right now I can't see it anywhere other than
docks or warehouses like I mentioned, and only fixed to one
spot."
A few final punching of buttons and, with a reluctant groan, the
lifty machine seemed to finally start giving in to the inventors
annoying attempts to get it to "behave", the machine slowly,
with the speed being very deliberate, lowering its platform,
Bubo being spotted above as taking this as a sign that they'd
done what they needed to and starting to make downward spirals
through the air towards the ponies. Haywire turned to Star with
his grin glowing and eyes shining with the victory they'd both
just achieved, it probably not seeming as that big a deal to the
mare but Haywire did so love what he did here st his workshop,
whether it be building something new or just solving a small
problem of having one of his inventions cause some trouble. "...
Hehehe... You look funny when you're all sooty," Haywire
commented on her now less white coat with a giggle, "a good
funny though. I think you look funny good..." He complimented
then had his grin downgrade to just a smile as he turned his
gaze to the street below their hooves and scuffed his hoof on
the pavement, "...Did you still wanna see the inside of the
workshop too? We can try to find you a towel to clean up with?"
He asks as Bubo landed on his shoulder and looked up at Star.
"I'm sure I've got one that's... clean... ish..."

Star blinked once as Hay told her that it was a lifty machine,
and that it 'lifty's, offering him just a bit of a blank stare
for a moment until he began actually explaining what it was and
its purpose in life. As he did so, she turned her gaze over to
the machine in question and tried to imagine how the machine
might work in the various situations laid out. She could
definitely see it being something useful for... just about
everypony except maybe pegasi. But maybe it could serve to be
useful for them as well, to provide a bit more stability for
certain tasks that needed a steady hoof. Though, like Haywire
mentioned, it could certainly serve to be smaller, and wheels
would help it achieve its task just a bit better.
As the 'lifty machine' finally began cooperate, Star returned
her attention to Haywire and perked her ears, only to then lower
a brow as he mentioned she looked funny when she was all sooty.
She then rose a hoof to her face and rubbed her cheek before
pulling her white hoof away--only to see that it wasn't white
anymore. It was now coated with grey, causing her to sigh. She
really needed a shower now, then. And she'd probably feel
extremely gross until she got the chance to do that. So,
scrunching her nose up slightly she glanced towards the workshop
Haywire asked if she still wanted to see before nodding
slightly. "Sure, Haywire... But I don't suppose you have a
shower in there somewhere I could borrow? This... grime, is
going to bother me until I get the chance to really clean myself
off..."

Oh... The grime was going to bother her? Uh oh. She might not be
a fan of the inside of his workshop then... After all, there was
a reason why hos own coat was always kinda dirty and blotched
with stuff from his machines. Them again, he never really took
any precautions when it came to keeping his coat from picking up
any kind of stuff leaking out of his inventions, so his cost
being dirty may have just been his own fault for not really
caring much about it. Either way, he guessed Star might not like
the mess that was awaiting them inside...
"Sure!" Haywire answered with enthusiasm all the same, a small
bounce of his hooves as he did so while Bubo gave a joyous chirp
over how the late hadn't been driven off by the Lifty machines
grumps. "I did have a shower the last time I checked, and it was
in super good condition too, so unless the rest of my workshop
ate it while I was at the park, you should be in luck! Just
follow me and you'll get rid of all that soot in no time!" He
led the way towards the entrance of his workshop, a big excited
grin and spring in his step as he reached and opened the door,
the small, and apparently ever changing, box meant for welcoming
guests that was set next to the door at eye level for the
Inventor springing into life as it detected new pony. This time
the front and top of the box was pulled back while the sides
were allowed to drop out flat to match the bottom, the contents
of the box being a small xylophone accompanied by a little pony
automaton sitting on his rump and wielding two tiny wrenches in
his front hooves. Once triggered, the little metal pony began to
okay out his duty, it clanging its wrenches against the
instrument in front of it and playing a short but happy and
welcoming tune for the new visitor as a small hammer unfilled
from the bottom of the box, it reading "Welcome to Tech Tock!".
As the little thing began to wind down, the small artificial
pony finished its performance with a little mechanical wave
before ending its preset actions and returning to its original
position, the banner rolling back up and box closing itself so
as to be ready for the possible appearance of another visiting
pony.
Inside the workshop, a noticeable clanging was coming from near
the back of the building though it was difficult to guess what
could have possibly been the source as it was difficult to guess
what most of the things inside even were on their own. It was
like a junkyard, bits and pieces of spare parts and materials
all laid out in disorganized piles littering the shop floor
while plenty of odd looking machines and gizmos decorated the
scene. Many of them were docile at the moment, most being a
touch slow to notice the newcomer as they had been kind of bored
that day and not in the mood to do much seeing how their creator
had taken the bird for a fly, but a certain fire focused machine
didn't let the sight of the new mare go unnoticed, it giving
what sounded like a low growl as she passed by while Haywire
wondered why he kept it so close to the entrance...
"Welcome to Tech Tock!" The little green stallion repeated the
banner's earlier message, "Where anything we imagine can be
built!" Bubo chirped again before hopping off of Hay and
fluttering himself over to a high point in the shop to keep an
eye on things, him landing on a bar jutting out of an oddly
shaped machine, kinda like a thick wavy line, with bleeping and
blooping buttons on its front that reached almost to the ceiling
of the relatively large main room of the workshop. The clanging
in the background seemed to die down as whatever was causing it
lost interest, however everything else in the workshop seemed to
be waking up, all manner of noises emanating from the collection
of strangely built inventions ranging from excited whistling to
annoyed grunting, each one seemingly formulating their initial
opinions of Star based on pretty much nothing other than what
they felt at the moment.
"Here, ill show you the bathroom right away," the inventor
gestured for Star to follow him further inside as he began to
weave around the mess of what most would consider junk
cluttering up his home, the stallion seeming to be oblivious to
how most would consider this kind of disorganization and such to
be a problem as he only wore his usual happy smile. The bathroom
wasn't far, it just being a quick trip past his bedroom door
towards the right side of his shop when looking in from the
entrance, and while the rest of the workshop was a big mess, the
bathroom was, confusingly, almost perfectly pristine. All the
whites were shiny brilliant white, and not a speck of filth
seemed to be anywhere to be seen. Clearly this part of the
workshop was spared most of the chaos that went on in the rest
of it and seemed to survive without earning much thought from
its owner, Haywire actually stopping to blink when he noticed a
clean towel hanging ready for use in the room. He'd almost
forgotten what a clean towel looked like.
"Kay, so feel free to use whatever you need," the stallion said
as he stepped into the bathroom and shrugged off his brief
surprise over the towel, him walking over towards the sink and
peering down into it as if expecting to find another surprise
hiding in its drain, "you are my guest, so please, make yourself
at home!" He continued, turning around and shining a happy grin
at Star before then just kinda standing there for a couple
seconds. His brain eventually caught up to him and granted him
his common sense back once its gears ceased its momentary
grinding, Haywire then looking a little embarassed and trotting
towards the door with a small "oh, sorry...", him remembering
that ponies tended to enjoy privacy when it came to this kind of
stuff. Leaving Star to do what she needed to, Haywire decided to
distract himself with checking on his inventions, all of which
now fully awake and looking to be actively discussing the new
pony. Or possibly plotting against her. Either way, they were
getting noisy.

Star gave a slight nod as Haywire mentioned having a shower
inside, relieved that she wouldn't have to go for very long with
being so dirty. She followed Hay inside, only to pause to watch
the welcome box offer its greetings to Star. She giggled a
little bit at the performance and applauded for the machine
before following Haywire the rest of the way in. Upon seeing
the... disheveled disaster Haywire called his workshop, Star
paused for a moment with her jaw dropped, gaze wandering over
the various items in front of her as she wondered just how he
got anything done in this place around all this mess. She hardly
even paid the growl any mind as she passed one of the machines,
her attention focused elsewhere as she tried to wrap her mind
around how this mess actually became a thing.
She sat stunned for a few moments before Haywire spoke up and
offered to show the way to the bathroom, causing her to blink
and shake her head slightly as she came back to. She followed
Haywire through the workshop, warily eyeing some of the beeping
and booping machines as she passed them before finally relaxing
a bit once she'd entered the bathroom. The rather... pristine
bathroom. Which was quite the juxtaposition to the horror she
had just witnessed. It was certainly strange, and it made Star
wonder when the last time this room had been used--and how,
since that was the case, Haywire had no odor about him.
Regardless of the case, she stared expectantly at him as she
waited for him to give her a bit of privacy--despite the fact
that there was literally no difference to a pony being in the
shower and being out of the shower--before turning to move to
the shower after Haywire had left.
She then turned the water on and began adjusting it to her
preferred levels, and searched the bathroom for some soap as the
water warmed up a bit. Upon doing so, she stepped inside and set
about cleaning up her face, body, and mane, taking all the time
she needed under the warm water, often peeking her head out of
the shower to get a look at herself in the mirror to make sure
she was missing nothing. After she'd thoroughly cleaned herself,
Star turned the water off and stepped out to try herself, then,
with her mane still quite wet from her time spent in the shower,
exited the bathroom with her usual easy smile on her lips.
"Well, what do you think, Hay? Did I miss anything?" she asked
as she approached Hay, voice as adjusted as it needed to be to
be heard over any possible noise. "Oh, and I had a thought while
I was in the shower: what about calling that 'lifty machine' a
'scissor lift'?"

Red, blue, green, blue, red, blue, green, blue...
The pattern seemed steady enough, Haywire thought, watching how
the front of a wide oval shaped thing in front of him repeated
the same series of colors on a small and simple display for
showing its current status. Haywire sat about a foot away from
it, tail almost wagging like that of a happy puppy as he wore a
smile and kept his eyes hopping from color to color. Bubo had
descended and decided to land on the metal whatchamacallit to
watch along with his creator, him giving the same small chirp
after each successful repetition of the pattern. To anypony
glancing at them, they would probably look slightly hypnotized,
or crazy, but it made sense to Haywire and Bubo at least. Kinda.
Red, blue, green, blue, red, purple, gre- wait, what? "Purple!"
Haywire pointed out excitedly as he looked almost overjoyed to
see his invention do something different from the established
pattern, him hopping back to his hooves and going to work on the
machine by both messing about with its, relatively small when
compared to his other inventions, controls and eventually just
prying open a panel for him to shimmy his way into and play with
its internal components. Eventually whatever he was doing did
something, as small and segmented metallic pillars rose out of
the machines top, each individual section of them starting to
twist in different directions and make little clicky sounds.
Bubo fluttered off of the thing and into a small hover as
Haywire crawled his way back out of the machine, him spinning
around then plopping back down onto his rump as so as to watch
the new clicking, Bubo landing on his muzzle and drawing his
goggles eyes. "And now we wait..." Hay told the bird, he himself
not even really knowing what exactly was going to happen next
and becoming increasingly excited about it, even if the
possibility of nothing happening was still present and real.
All of this was happening both during and after Star's shower,
her having returned and spoken to Haywire only moments after
he'd crawled his way back out to the workshop floor, the
stallion slapping on a grin before turning his attention and
gaze to the wet maned mare. He opened his mouth to reply, but no
words came, the small stallion becoming slightly confused over
it but not having his grin lessen in the slightest, though he
did start to find it difficult to look directly at Star, a tiny
giggle escaping him for some reason every time he tried, the
little green pony having begun to rub one of his front legs a
bit with the hoof of the other, "hehe... I think you did a good
job..." He was able to eventually manage, though a small tinge
of worry was starting to get to him now. If Star couldn't be
comfortable with having that soot on her, then it was reasonable
to assume that she just enjoyed being clean all of the time,
right? His workshop wasn't the best place for staying clean...
Maybe she could just keep using his shower if she needed to?
Another small giggle that Hay didn't understand then a chance
for him to get over his current confusion and focus back onto
the other pony proper when she mentioned his invention, his
brain immediately clicking back to its usual 'normal' way of
thinking as he giggled again, "I guess its able to lifty
scissors, but my invention is supposed to lifty everything!" He
replied, hooves again raising up as if that would again explain
everything while his grin only shined that much brighter, "I
wouldn't mind letting ponies call it whatever they like though.
How come scissors? Did I leave scissors on the platform and you
found them while you were up there?"

Barely noticing his nervous giggling and his fidgeting with his
hoof, Star just smiled at him for a moment before turning her
gaze to wander over the mess of the room Hay called his
workshop. It was... Still just as overwhelming as the first time
she saw it. She still didn't understand how he managed to find
anything, or get anything done... Surely, if he had this mess
cleaned up, he would be a lot more efficient, and be able to
create so much more, and so much better? Maybe she could ask...
When Hay finally got around to responding to her initial
question, she looked back to him with her smile still on her
face and nodded to him before examining the disaster again. How
would she even tackle something like this if she had the
opportunity...?
When Hay began talking about the 'lifty machine' outside in a
roundabout way, Star turned her attention back to him with a
patient--if slightly confused--expression. "I say scissors
because of how the machine raised and lowered its platform,"
Star said after Hay questioned her about the conclusion of the
name. "The folding supports reminded me a lot of how a scissor
opens and closes. That's... Really about it, though," she said,
shrugging once before moving over to a nearby pile to pick up an
item on top. "Hay... How come your shop is so messy? Wouldn't
that drive away some potential customers? And wouldn't that
hinder efficiency? If you had a clean workspace, you'd
hypothetically be able to build faster, and build better...
Right?"

Re: Nascence
By: Haywire Date: April 17, 2014, 10:10 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Hay paused and brought a hoof up to his chin as he thought about
the name. He guessed he could see how it might remind ponies of
scissors opening and closing, but that's really only relevant to
its current incarnation. The invention - like most of what he
built - was ever changing as he worked on it with the hopes of
improving its design. Originally he'd even built it to have a
single extending pillar connecting the platform to its base, but
he doubted "scissor lift" would fit that version of the lifty
machine very well. Eh, he shrugged, for now it seemed fitting
enough if a name though, so why not? And like he said, ponies
could call it whatever they liked if it made them enjoy the
machine more. It would always just be a "lifty" machine to
Haywire though despite how silly a name it probably was for
others.
As Star moved on so did Haywire, the inventor allowing his gaze
to follow the mare then listen to her new questions.
"Oh, uh, well, I guess I just never get around to cleaning up?
Making my workshop all tidy and neat is actually towards the
bottom of my to-do list since I usually font have the time for
it. Why clean when I could be building?" A grin again took over
Hay's face as this, again, made perfect sense to him. Time spent
cleaning was time not spent building a new wonderfully bleepy
and bloopy machine for who knows what purpose!
Star's next question got a bit of an odd reaction from Hay
however, as he only awkwardly shifted his hooves and gave a
short "Ehehe..." In response. What customers? He'd need to have
them first before they could be driven off, and his reputation
for having a "dangerous" workshop full of "life threatening"
machines tended to prevent any customers from showing up to
begin with. Indeed, such a lack of traffic is what prompted
Hay's silly little welcoming gadgets like the xylophone playing
automaton or confetti and party horn combo, as anypony coming by
to check out his workshop was something to be celebrated in his
eyes. He loved guests, whenever he was lucky enough to have
them, and he wanted to make sure they enjoyed their time as much
as he enjoyed their company! The rarity of an actual "customer"
however sort of blurred the line between paying client and pony
just swinging by to look at some stuff for their own amusement
in his eyes.
The object Star picked up, some sort of small cube type dealy
made of a shiny bronze like material and small enough to fit in
ones hoof, would, after a few seconds of inactivity, start to
give off small flashes of bright light as if from a camera from
each of its sides then vibrate a bit before going back to
apparent inactivity.
"As for efficiency, um... I dunno... I like to think I know
where everything I need is. Or at least which pile to crawl
through until I find it. I don't think it affects my building
too much... Though I guess begun able to find all the parts I
need in only a few minutes would be nice...
"... Are you asking me to clean my room?" Hay giggled after a
short pause.
