Star only giggled at Haywire's words of how he was always
jealous of pegasi's weather abilities, the statement not really
having surprised her. She'd heard that multiple times before
from various ponies, and her retort was always, "It's not so fun
the first time you get shocked--or almost get shocked," or at
least it would have been, if Hay hadn't already gone on to talk
about the stuff he had to do on top of figuring out his...
'weather machines', she guessed they were. She wasn't really
sure, but she couldn't just interrupt him to ask. A look of
surprised confusion crossed her face as she listened to what he
was saying, obviously a little baffled by his words. 'The egg'?
'The heat blasty box'? 'Carving machine'? 'Walker'?
She didn't know what to think of what he was calling all his
creations but luckily, it seemed Bubo had her back. Once he
pecked Hay's head, the stallion seemed to 'come back to', which
earned a gentle smile from Star to Bubo in thanks before she
returned her attention to the pony before her. She nodded at his
suggestion that she visit his shop whenever, followed by her
giggling once more when he asked about her special talent. She
was a little curious now what his reaction to it would be, since
every pony's reaction seemed to differ... "I like to do just
about anything, Haywire. I've worked alongside lots of ponies,
building, cleaning, singing, dancing, sewing, writing, editing,
filming, photographing... You could say I'm a mare of all trades
and master of none. That's because my special talent is helping
other ponies find or fulfill their hearts' desire," she told
him, adjusting herself in such a way that he could see the pink
heart surrounded by the blue dots on her flank.
"It's all fun, and I haven't found much yet that I didn't enjoy.
I'm sure there's something out there, I just haven't found it.
Anyway, about your shop... I think I'd like to see it, unless
you're not finished out here. You made it sound very
interesting. Oh... And what can you tell me about those...
'weather machines'? you mentioned you tried building?"

Hay's grin slowly managed to somehow grow even bigger as he
listened to Star explain her talent and what it allowed her to
do, the little green stallion fully approving of the apparent
freedom and opportunity her cutie mark encouraged. "That sounds
like a blast!" He commented with enthusiasm. "Helping other
ponies like that must always keep things fresh with new stuff to
do. Have you ever flown a hot air balloon? Or helped to carve
out a giant sculpture into the side of a mountain? Or repurposed
an old railroad into an awesome rollercoaster complete with
loops, hoops and droops? Maybe you've gotten to ride a dragon
while singing back up vocals to a band playing a rock and roll
show for a crowd of thousands watching below?"
Getting a little carried away, Haywire reigned in his thoughts
to try and prevent another peck from finding its way to his
skull as he excitedly bobbed his head at Star's interest in
seeing his workshop. His smile fell a little though when he
remembered that today was more Bubo's day than his own. "Well, I
think that's up to Bubo," Hay said, smiling up at the mechanical
bird on his head, "What do you say? Had your fill for today?"
Bubo looked around at the park and then up at the sky. For a
moment he stared, wings moving slightly as if trying to decide
if they wanted to carry him back up into the blue above.
Eventually having his wings go still, Bubo returned his
attention to the ponies and gave a few chirps and whistles, the
bird deciding one crash was enough for today. Hay grinned,
lowering his head enough to pet Bubo with a hoof before turning
to lead Star onwards with a happy bounce in his step.
"I'd love to show you my workshop!" The inventor said, thinking
how lucky he'd been lately to have so many visitors to his
little place of inventing, "I wouldn't get too excited about the
weather machines though... I haven't worked on those in a
while... Most of them couldn't get past the 'reaching' phase as,
without wings, I needed to try and find a way to get what I had
where it needed to be to do anything to the weather of course.
My first few gadgets were kind if silly when it came to that
though... " he admitted with a sheepish smile, "like how once I
tried to create something that could lasso clouds and pull them
down for me to work on... What's silly is how it actually worked
once." An added giggle coming from Haywire at that while Bubo
hopped down from Hay's head and onto his back where he scooted
up close to the back of the inventors neck now that they were
leaving the park, the bird starting to become more and more
motionless as he half hid his head behind a wing, Bubo still
peeking over the edge as they hadn't reached the streets yet..

Wearing her own smile, Star watched and listened to Haywire idly
as he began to ask her a list of things she might have done. His
reaction was a bit different from the norm--it was so innocent,
Star couldn't help but giggle at the list of things, despite her
shaking her head after every item past the first. To the hot air
balloon item she gave a nod, but she had never even considered
the rest of the things he described. He was certainly very
creative, wasn't he? Though, that did have to kind of come with
the territory as an inventory, didn't it? Although that just
made her wonder what inspired him to create Bubo... At the
mention of Hay's companion, Star turned her gaze to the
mechanical avian and smiled gently at him, eyes searching the
construct for a moment to admire its quality.
Then, as Bubo chirped and Hay expressed his excitement to show
her his workshop, Star's smile widened as she followed him to
the edge of the park, ears perked to him to show she was
listening. It was a little disappointing to hear the weather
machines were more a failed project than anything, but the
mention of having been successful with lassoing a cloud earned a
couple of raised brows in surprise. "Wow... I never would have
thought that a cloud could be lasso'd, Haywire. That must have
been quite the material you used to make the rope. You know...
If you'd like, I could get you a few clouds to help you work on
those weather machines a little bit? I mean, that's the kind of
thing I usually do when I'm helping ponies towards their hearts'
desire--sometimes I'll be an assistant and help them out
directly with things, or sometimes I'll be like a secretary or a
maid even, making sure things are clean and they have food to
eat, all so they can focus on whatever their goal is. So,
getting a cloud for you's hardly any issue."
She paused for a moment then, attention once more caught by
Bubo. Smiling yet again, Star edged closer to Haywire so she
could reach over and gently nuzzle the hiding bird. "For a
machine, Bubo is surprisingly equine-like, Haywire. I'd ask how
you managed that, but I find it likely that I probably wouldn't
be able to understand it..."

"It was a big mix of different stuff for the rope," Hay
explained sort, "Like I said though, it only really worked
once... I still have the rope I used, but it was being all weird
and iffy whenever I tried to catch another cloud with it. I
started to wonder actually if the clouds charge of static
electricity had anything to do with the ropes grabbyness on it
since I was nearly hit with a bolt when I pulled it down, but I
haven't been able to reach another storm cloud to try again
since." Star's offer to pull a cloud down from the heavens for
him worked well in perking up Hay's ears in interest, though
half of the point of his lasso invention was to find a way to
reach the clouds without the aid of pegasus magic. Still, he did
have that one idea he wanted to play around with that could
possibly involve capturing a cloud. Could also test put that
rope again too since Star's wings would mean reaching the clouds
wouldn't be an issue. Hay giggled slightly as he thought about
the other examples Star gave for what she's done for others in
the past. He liked having assistants to help with his work.
Being able to share his inventions with other ponies was one of
his favoritest things to do since most avoided his workshop
entirely, so he was eager to accept. "Sure! I'd really
appreciate that! Quick and incredibly relevant question though:
should something randomly explode into a ball of fire and
possibly take half of the workshop with it, how well do you
think you'd be able to handle the sudden excitement?"
Hay thought about the idea of a secretary just for the fun of it
but quickly came to the conclusion that he'd probably never need
one, but the thought of her being used to cleaning and cooking
for others almost caused him to laugh fully out loud solely
because now he was wondering what the mare would think when they
reached his workshop and she witnessed the destructive mess and
bare kitchen cupboards waiting there for them.
Hay giggled again when he noticed Star come closer and nuzzle
the bird on his back, Bubo giving a surprised series of chirps
before pulling both wings over his head to hide out of both
wanting to avoid attention now that they were back on the street
and because he was being shy about the nuzzle. Hay hummed in
thought when Star spoke more of his bird, the inventor wondering
if there was a way to properly explain to anyone how his
mechanical companion came to be. "Honestly... I dunno of I'd
even be able to tell myself how I made him without not making
much sense... Bubo is special. I started getting hit with a
whole lot of inspiration back then and put all the parts and
stuff just... where they belonged and..." He thought back to
that first day when Bubo showed his first signs of life, the
memory bringing a warm smile to his face as he leaned his head
back to nudge the bird in a show of affection, Bubo now acting
as he had when they were making their way to the park originally
by pretending to be a simple metal statue. "You ever start doing
or working on something that just felt... right?" Hay asked with
a happy grin back at Star. "That's kind of what happened with
Bubo. I just... started putting the pieces together. If that
makes sense."

Star giggled quietly at Bubo's surprised chirps, a very amused
grin on her lips as she watched the machine try to mask itself
from existence with its wings. She found it an awfully adorable
reaction even if he was trying to hide now. Not wanting to
antagonize, she stepped away from Haywire a little bit to give
him some room, though her ears remained swiveled towards him as
he talked about when he built Bubo, the stallion making it sound
like the mechanical bird was what earned him his cutie mark. It
really wouldn't have surprised her if that was the case, so she
decided not to ask whether that was so. Instead, she only
glanced back to him as he smiled to her, returning her own easy
smile before offering a slight shrug in response to his words.
"Our special talents allow us some strange feats sometimes. So,
yes, it does make sense in a way. Either way, he's turned out to
be quite the invention, so I'd say you went right somewhere
along the way," she said playfully, smiling widening a little
bit. However, that smile soon faltered as she brought up
something from earlier in the conversation. "As for your
workshop randomly exploding... It would really do that?" she
asked quietly, perhaps a trifle fearfully. "And that means it
could take you with it, if you were in the wrong place at the
wrong time? That sounds... Really bad. I don't think I'd handle
it well at all--I've always suffered from panic attacks, you
see. Ever since I was a filly... So, that... is honestly making
me a little hesitant now..."

"Being hesitant to be a part of sudden explosions does seem to
be a pretty normal way for most ponies to react to that,"
Haywire replied with a small giggle before noticing just how
worried the idea had made Star, his ears drooping slightly as he
now half expected her to call off their trip to his workshop.
"Would that really happen? Well, that is the worst possible
scenario I can possibly think of, the kind of thing where
everything just goes catastrophically wrong, but that thankfully
hasn't happened yet, otherwise me and my workshop probably
wouldn't be around right now. It can sometimes get a little
hazardous when testing out new inventions though since I'm often
not even sure what they will do, and it is working with machines
of varying size and functions, but!" He said, trying to sound
cheery again, "I'm happy to say that nothing seriously bad has
happened to anypony who's visited my workshop in a long while!
Worst recent thing I can think of was..." He paused his walking,
tapping a hoof on his chin and squinting his eyes as he recalled
the most recent and relevant example, "... A stallion came in
and got buried under a pile of snow after he got into a
disagreement with a couple of my inventions. He got all shivery
from the cold and probably walked home wet, but he was perfectly
okay.
"All we need to do is get my workshop to warm up to you and my
inventions will probably leave you alone," he continued, picking
his trot back up as he spoke of his home as if it and the
machines within were other ponies, "a visit or two and they
would probably be okay with you and leave you be so long as you
didn't do anything to provoke them... I don't think I've ever
seen anypony go through a panic attack before... How bad are
they...? If you don't mind me asking..."

Turning her gaze down to the ground before her as she walked
along Haywire, her ears flopped down a bit while he spoke about
the possibility of his workshop exploding being low. She wanted
to believe that that was the case, but just the fact alone that
he even mentioned that possibility meant it was actually
something to worry about, especially since he didn't seem at all
like the type of pony to joke around about things like that.
Just the thought alone of being in a workshop that could explode
like he was saying was enough to make her heart beat faster--and
she knew if she didn't try to calm her down, the chest pains
would start after and everything would just snowball after that.
So, as Haywire continued to speak, Star began to breathe deeply
in an attempt to calm herself, her mind reminding her that there
was no use in 'what ifs'.
When she realized that Haywire was asking about her panic
attacks, Star rose her gaze from the ground and gave him the
most calm and relaxed look she could manage while still keeping
her breaths heavy and even. Brief silence ensued as she thought
about how best to answer his question before she spoke up, voice
a little shaky. "They're... bad. First time I had a panic
attack, I had my parents take me to the emergency room because
it was just so awful. When it gets bad enough, it feels like I'm
having a heart attack. My vision will kind of fade out and I'll
feel like I'm going to vomit, I'll hyperventilate, and sometimes
I've felt like I was... watching myself in a dream. I don't
really know how to describe it--I think a doctor once said it
was... 'depersonalization' or something like that. So... In
other words, they're just not fun. It's why I try to take
everything that comes my way as calmly and relaxed as I can..."

Hay's ears drooped further, his head also lowering a bit as he
wore a sympathetic expression and came slightly closer, the
inventor feeling concerned over such a problem for the mare but
not knowing exactly what to say about it. Bubo, having also been
listening despite his pretending to be nothing more than shaped
metal, had peeked his head out over his wing as Star explained
her panic attacks, the small closing of the gap between the two
ponies tempting him to move from where he was ok Hay's back.
Eventually giving in, the mechanical bird lowered his wings,
glanced back and forth to check and see if the coast was clear,
then hopped from Hay's back over to Star's, Bubo then trying to
give a series of comforting coos as he nuzzled her from his
spot.
"You're really good at being calm and relaxed," Haywire said,
him smiling to try and cheer up the mare along with his bird, "I
would have never guessed just from meeting you. Honestly, you
come across as really laid back to me. Is there anything more
that can be done about these attacks of yours? Or, well, I guess
that's a silly question since if there was you would probably be
doing it already... Hmm..." Could something, like, be built to
fix that? No... It's just how someone is that can cause such
things, right? Aww... A problem his inventions couldn't solve...
Well, not quite. Maybe he can build something that can simply
assist a pony in relaxing? He already had a few things laying
around his workshop that he hadn't worked on in a while that
were originally planned to serve as toys and such, but thinking
about it now, maybe he can repurpose a few currently hopeless
gadgets into something new? Instead of failing to make them
exciting he could try and take them in the other direction? That
sounded fun and new actually. It wasn't often Haywire tried to
create something that didn't do something extreme or loud.
Actually... he might already have something he could work on for
this...
The pace of their walking slowed as they neared Hay's workshop,
the lifty machine, still outside and near his not perfectly
repaired broken front window, continuing to take up space while
its platform now sat at a new slant and its control panel
blinked with a rainbow of different colored blinky lights. Why
they blinked none could ever know for certain, but it didn't
catch Hay's eye immediately, so it was probably fine. Probably.
"Well," Hay said as they came to a stop outside, his lofty
machine giving a hiss of what sounded like steam as it gave what
was the closest thing it could manage to a bored sigh, it
clearly growing tired with its place outside, "here we are! I
present to you Tech Toch! My workshop and where anything and
everything that can be imagined can be, has, is and will be
made! Hopefully!" His chipper tone was back, though its return
was a bit short lived as his mood dipped again when he dropped
his gaze to the ground beneath his hooves and asked with a
quieter and lightly worried tone, "... You did still want to see
it, right?"
Just then, out of apparently wanting some attention, the lofty
machine gave another hiss, this one louder, before having its
platform straighten itself out and elevate itself a few feet
higher, its control panel bleepin and bloopin wildly for a few
moments to try and tattle on the rest of itself. Haywire,
hearing the noise, turned to face the machine, Bubo also taking
notice and giving Star one more nuzzle before taking off into
the air and flying a circle around the lifty machine, coming
down for a landing onto the control panel to watch the lights
while Hay looked back to Star. "Excuse me one sec?" He asked,
smiling again and seeming happy despite the commotion, "I gotta
go make sure that doesn't decide to try flipping itself over
again." Passing along the not that urgent I guess urgency of his
needing to step away for a moment, Haywire trotted towards the
machine. "Oh! You might be able to give me a hoof with this if
it does what I think it will do!" Hay called back to Star as he
neared the control panel, sounding excited, "Would you be
willing to help me out if I need it? Shouldn't be too hard for
somepony with wings."

For the most part, Star returned her gaze to the ground in front
of her after speaking, her efforts now mostly focused on trying
to keep herself from thinking too much about what happened when
she succumbed to one of her attacks; that was the last thing she
needed. However, the moment she felt something foreign on her
back, she lifted her head and glanced over her shoulder, only to
giggle brightly and nuzzle Bubo back when he began to coo at her
with a quiet, "Awwww. Thank you, Bubo~," the machine's efforts
doing wonders to help dismiss her mood. As Haywire began
speaking, Star turned her attention to him with her typical
relaxed smile back on her lips. It was no surprise to her when
he talked about coming across as really laid back. It was
something she was often told by other ponies: that they found it
easy to relax around her. It was something she took pride in,
really.
"Mostly just breathing exercises," she responded to his question
of what could be done about her attacks. "Breathing exercises,
getting away from whatever it is that was that made me start,
some calming music usually helps, some kinds of tea can also be
helpful, as can physical contact from another pony on top of
reassurance from them." She shrugged a little bit after that
before looking back to Bubo again, showering him with attention
the rest of the way to the workshop. Once there, she immediately
took notice of the 'lifty machine', though as a result of not
really knowing what it was protruding from his workshop, she
only gave it a bewildered look before examining the rest of the
building's outward appearance. "I... Suppose so, Haywire," Star
replied hesitantly to his question of if she still wanted to see
his workshop. She still wasn't really keen on the idea of being
blown apart, but maybe it wasn't as bad as he made it seem? He
did say nothing like that had happened to anypony... Then, as
Haywire mentioned her being able to give him a hoof and asked
her assistance, she nodded a bit as her smile reflexively spread
on her lips once more. "Of course, Haywire. I'd love to help...
just so long as it doesn't explode on me, or anything like
that," she said, stifling a giggle for some reason before trying
to straighten her expression out.

"Great!" Haywire exclaimed, whatever was making Star giggle
going right over his head with a small "wooshy" noise as he
approached and fiddled with the control panel of his machine.
"Hopefully help won't be needed but, you know, have all the
bases covered and all. So long as I pull the right levers, press
the right buttons, and perform its favorite super secret tap for
the code where it won't go nuts," he rattled off, Bubo watching
as levers and buttons were being pulled and pressed in an
erratic pattern which possibly came across as purely random at
times to anypony not used to the stallions behavior, "all should
be good!" The inventor finished with one more mash of his hoof
onto several buttons at once, the small green stallion then
trotting away from the control panel and to the base of his
lifty machine where he plopped down onto his rump and slowly
tapped onto its outer metal a few times.
About a second passes after his initial tapping, the lifty
machine giving some small groans and moans as if trying to
decide whether or not its time to try its metaphorical hand at
taking over the workshop had come, it eventually deciding
against it simply out of how much it did indeed come to enjoy
the tapping... Some tapping of its own came from deeper inside
the machine, Haywire smiling at the sound then tapping a few
more times onto its metal, this time a little faster and
recieving a response much sooner. The second response seemed to
be a good sign as it upgraded Hay's smile to a wide grin and
spurred him on to start giving a very fast, long and complex
series of taps that was being complimented by the lifty
machine's own sounds as the two seemed to mingle their patterns
into an almost musical tune. It lasted around half a minute
before ending, Haywire then standing back up with a small bounce
before turning back to Star and proudly claiming, "There! That
should take care of it!"
Probably doing whatever its equivalent to an evil giggle could
be, in this case some sort of rattling deep inside itself, the
lifty machine then chose this moment to raise its platform high
up into the air with a roar of grinding gears and hydraulics, it
going as far as far as it could and now towering some height
above the the workshop it was next to, proudly broadcasting
itself and its location in the street to the rest of the
neighborhood and no doubt earning more than a few eye rolls from
the distant neighbors still willing to live close enough to see
it. To further cement its apparent idea of a victory, the
control panel located at the bottom of the machine locked up, no
longer allowing any real commands to be punched in. Haywire
turned around, first looking dissapointed then cross with the
machine as he sat down and crossed his front legs, the stallion
trying to think of the appropriate way to scold or punish it for
getting its tapping and still deciding to act this way. No taps
for a week!
Glancing at the control panel then back to the machine it was
for, Hay scurried over and tried to tell it to quit these
shenanigans only to then learn of how unresponsive it was being
now, another rattling being the machines response. "Welp!" Hay
said as he turned back to face Star, Bubo flying up towards the
platform in the air above them, "Guess it decided to be mean
today. If you still wanna help, could I ask you to fly up to the
platform for me? I have a second control panel up there for the
ponies being lifted, and it only ever locks up this bottom one
because it knows I can't fly. Bubo usually helps me with this
part, but he sometimes has trouble with the levers. Basically, I
just need you to go up to the platform, find the control panel,
which is in the center of the platform and possibly underneath a
panel right now but no doubt leaking smoke so it shouldn't be
too hard to spot, then follow the directions of the different
blinky lights all over it. I can't control my lifty machine from
down here right now, but those 'everyday emergency' lights are
actually separate from lifty itself, so right now whatever
buttons I press down here should light up the ones for the same
buttons up there. Nothing nopony can't handle!"
