Nascence
By: Star Catcher Date: February 14, 2014, 7:08 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Late morning. Late morning, and she still hadn't gotten up.
Star Catcher lazed about in the bed of her small apartment, her
body sprawled out over the sheets she laid on as she slowly
breathed in and out. Not asleep, just... lying there. Not
wanting to get up. She had no idea what she was going to do for
the day, and it was a bit of a drain to her will. She didn't
really want much to just wander for the day, but it seemed
that's exactly what she'd have to resort to doing. At least it
would give her an excuse to explore Canterlot? But all that
walking and stress on her hooves... Sighing quietly, Star
finally lifted a hoof up to her eyes to rub at the burn that was
beginning to grow there from too much sleep and not enough
moving round.
With that last straw that broke the camel's back, she
reluctantly rolled out of bed and onto her hooves, a quiet
grumble of protest escaping her as she blew some of her mane out
of her eyes. Why did she have to feel so tired? Damn 'too much
sleep makes you even more exhausted' rule... Head hung slightly
in vague grumpiness, Star Catcher shambled her way over to the
bathroom where she began her morning hygiene ritual, making sure
her now-unruly mane and tail were combed down to perfection, her
teeth and breath were in tip-top condition, and that her coat
practically shined. Some time later, she left the bathroom again
and stretched a little bit as she gazed out of the window that
looked out over what of Canterlot she could see.
That park a little ways away... She guessed she could make that
her first destination. She'd been there before, but that was
usually a good place to look for something interesting
happening. Not like she really had any better ideas. Brushing
some more of her mane to one side of her head with a hoof, Star
Catcher turned and left her apartment, making sure to lock it
before descending down to the ground floor. Then, upon leaving
the building, she leisurely began making her way towards the
park, her hooves still feeling a little lethargic from her many
hours asleep.

By: Haywire Date: February 14, 2014, 10:43 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
It had been a pleasant day for Haywire so far as he trotted down
the streets of Canterlot, a small bounce in his step and large
smile on his face as he enjoyed the delicious smell of the fresh
air around him and gave small nods and quick "Hi!"s to the
ponies he passed. His upbeat attitude shone almost as brightly
as the late morning sun whose rays warmed his body and whose
light shone off of his goggles in a small gleam. He hadn't done
this in a while, gone off on this smaller kind of trip without
lugging around some kind of massive machine to potentially
demolish a section of the sidewalk, but he was remembering why
these certain days were always special as he neared the park he
was looking for, his excitement growing not really for himself
but for the passenger he carried on his back in anticipation for
what they were coming here to do.
For while he may not have brought some kind of huge device meant
to serve some kind of purpose that even he may not be fully sure
of yet, he wasn't alone, his turning of his head to look over
his shoulder at what most would consider some kind of statue
drawing some small attention from passers-by when he actually
began to whisper to it. "Almost there," he assured it, not
recieving any kind of response as he only gave a warm and
encouraging smile to the seemingly lifeless object he was
lugging around, "not long now. Sure you don't want to stretch a
bit on the way? Could get started right when we step on the
grass that way." He kept his gaze on his passenger for a few
more seconds, still holding his smile until it became obvious he
would get nowhere with his suggestion, hay then just giving a
nod of understanding before turning his eyes back forward.
The 'statue' he carried looked like a kind of bird, one that
seemed to be in a sleeping position as it balanced on the small
stallions back. It's head was tucked under one of its wings, and
it was positioned very close up to the back of the inventors
neck, almost hugging it as it somehow remained balanced
somewhere it was nestled against him. It appeared to be mostly
made out of some kind of metal, and every so often one could
possibly make out a faint whirring sound originating from inside
it. The bird didn't move, as it shouldn't given that it was
surely an inanimate object, but no matter how much the inventor
carrying it bounced with his trot, the bird never seemed to fall
over, something a few ponies found odd as they passed by and
wondered whether the little green goggle wearing stallion had
accidentally glued his statue to his back.
Haywire paused his pace for a moment to politely wave off a
stallion's curiosity regarding the bird he carried, a simple
brief explanation that he'd "picked it up at some small shop of
oddities" while on his way here, the goggle wearing stallion
taking note of the feeling against his neck as he started up his
walk again. Just as Hay promised, the park wasn't much further,
both he and his metal bird reaching it only minutes later, him
grinning again and picking up his speed a little as he hurried
along to meet the expanse of well cared for and healthily green
grass with his hooves. It had been too long since the last time
he'd come here for this... and Hay was glad he'd get to treat
him to this again, the green stallion leaning his head back to
nudge the bird as he spoke, out loud, without a whisper, and in
a cheery tone of voice, "Kay, Bubo, we're here! See? Told you it
wasn't as far as you thought. It probably just feels so long
because you always keep your wing over your head."
The bird on his back remained motionless for a few more seconds,
then slowly began to show signs of life, his head very carefully
peaking out from the cover of his wing. Bubo looked around, as
if to check and see of anypony was watching before realizing
that he was, in fact, alone save for the presence of his
creator. The mechanical bird gave a a short series of chirps,
him then stretching out his wings then flapping them to assist
with his hop up onto Haywire's noggin, the inventor lowering his
head in response and smiling up at the bird before Bubo hopped
off and down to the grass below, im flapping his wings once more
to soften his landing before looking up at his creator, him
giving a few sharp whistles and stretching out more in
preparation for why they'd come here.
Bubo wasn't ever meant to be a secret Haywire kept to himself.
He never shooed visitors to his workshop away out of fear of the
bird he'd built being discovered, but Bubo himself wasn't a fan
of being out in public. Small encounters with new ponies were
tolerable for him, pleasant even as he enjoyed meeting those who
brave his home and its inventions, but the mechanical bird
wasn't a fan of being surrounded by ponies out in the street,
being crowded and bombarded with attention not over what he was
really, but instead over what he wasn't instead. Outside
Haywire's workshop Bubo was an imitation in the eyes of most,
something that wasn't "real" in their opinions as he simply
looked and acted like something else. Because of this his trips
outside tended to be few and far between, the mechanical bird
instead staying home and taking comfort from being among the
other machines, gadgets and devices he shared the space with.
However, Bubo was a bird, which meant he had wings, which of
course meant he wanted to use them, to fly, soar and glide like
any other winged creature gifted with the ability of flight,
this desire being the reason behind the trip he and Haywire was
making today.
"Okay," Hay said, sitting down and digging through his saddle
bags with a hoof to fish out a stop watch, pencil and checklist,
"last time the first stall happened at around twenty-six
seconds. Feeling like we can beat that today? Any weird bleep
bloops bothering you this since this morning?" He asked, the
bird on the ground giving a combination of chirps, the tone of
them being lively before he went to preening his mechanical
wings to make sure they were ready. "Okay, so no on that one...
How about that weird tick you had in your left shoulder?" Bubo
ceased his preening to look at the part of himself mentioned,
him then slowly flapping his left wing to check for any
problems. Nothing from what he could tell, the bird becoming
even more confident of his capabilities as he struck a strong
and proud pose to reflect it as Haywire continued, "okay, well,
we already took care of the leg problem during landings,
addressed the sudden loss of depth perception during steep
dives, and worked on the clicky noise that wasn't going away
after your last tumble out here, so I guess that's it!" Hay
punctuated this declaration with a final check mark being
scribbled into the final box of his list, him then stuffing the
pencil and list back into his saddle bag then holding up the
stop watch.
"Okay, Bubo, on three then," Bubo traded in his proud and
powerful stance for a more determined one, his eyes tiring up
towards the sky as he waited for his creator to give the signal
to begin, "....one..." he spread out his wings, "... two..."
Bubo gave a few light flaps in anticipation before having his
limbs fall still, "... Three!" With a small click of the stop
watch being heard as Haywire turned it on, Bubo shot up into the
air, his wings taking him upwards swiftly as he powered his way
up into the sky, reaching a respectable altitude rather quickly
then having him cease his speedy ascent by pulling his wings in
close to his body. He then lingered very briefly in free fall
before falling back towards the ground below, him turning in the
air so as to turn his fall into a dive that was quickly gaining
speed he approached the ground like a missile, him holding to
this until just the right moment to shoot his wings back out and
pull up, the bird using the speed to move on to an impressive
series of loops, twists and other fears of flying aptitude as he
displayed what he could do when he didn't have four walls and,
more importantly, a roof to hold him back. The spectacle drew
the eyes of many of the other ponies in the park, some of who
commenting on how fast and interested in showing off the bird
seemed to be while Haywire just sat in the grass and watched
with a smile.
Twenty-six seconds had come and gone already, and while he still
kept his eye on the stop watch to keep track of the total
elapsed time of Bubo's flight, Hay always believed that the
watch wasn't what made these trips special. Haywire was just
happy to see Bubo outside, flying and enjoying himself in
complete freedom from the confinement of his workshop, and while
he knew Bubo himself enjoyed his home, Hay always tried to
encourage the mechanical bird to come outside with him more
often, often being met with nothing but a turned head or short
combination of low chirps meant to express Bubo's refusal. These
days though, when he took Bubo out to test his speed,
maneuverability, and ability to stay operational, gave Bubo an
excuse to come outside. It wasn't just him leaving the workshop
to go to the park, Haywire would assure him, its important
sciency data gathering! He needed to come out to help improve
himself. Hay wasn't lying there, but he also just didn't mention
that it may improve him in more ways than one.
Speaking of improving, Haywire grinned when he realized how well
Bubo was doing today. Glancing st his stop watch, Hay made note
of how it had been full minutes worth of uninterrupted power and
acrobatic flying. Maybe they'd finally worked out his kinks and
gotten him "finished"? Hay giggled in excitement at the idea,
the possibility of having Bubo reach a stage of completion would
be amazing for both of them! Oh the party he would plan to
celebrate! They'd have B.2s, peanut butter bars, blocks of
caramel, all kinds of games, and-
Hay's thoughts were cut off when Bubo crash landed head first
into the grass just a few feet away from him, the mechanical
bird hitting the ground with enough impact to bury himself
several inches into the dirt, him being stuck in an awkward pose
of mid flight while his head was completely buried in the
ground. Hm... Well, he'd done a lot better this firm. Haywire
stopped hos watch then pulled out his checklist and pencil
again, this time flipping the paper over and making note of the
time Bubo had reached before then setting everything down on the
ground so as to allow him the freedom of bounding over to the
still locked up bird and lavish the poor thing with excited
praise.

---------------------------------------------------------
"Ugh... Really?" Star complained to herself after a yawn escaped
her and she raised a hoof up to an eye to wipe the water away.
"I need some coffee," she muttered to herself, shortly before
reaching the edge of the park and stopping to look around. Not
really much here... Couple of ponies, but most seemed to be
preoccupied with another pony, or like they were just not
interested in company. This place was a bust, then. Nothing to
do here. Pouting a little bit to herself, Star began walking
forward again, this time cutting a straight path through the
park before eventually following the pathway that lead through
the rest of the park.
Barely paying attention to what was around her, Star
lethargically moved forward, her half-lidded gaze held on the
ground before her. Maybe she should stop by a place that sold
coffee, first... An iced mocha actually sounded pretty good...
With all that ice, and caffeine, and whipped cream, and
goodness... Her ears perked as she heard a strange series of
what sounded like... chirping. But not chirping. But also
chirping. She flicked her ears a little bit as if trying to get
them to work properly, before glancing over in the direction she
heard the noise from and deciding maybe she should investigate.
Just to see. Not like she was doing anything better, right?
A little cautiously, Star made her way over to where she thought
she heard the noise, only to come across a green pony next to
some... weird... object? What was that? Peering her eyes, Star
tried to make out what the foreign object was, but had little
success in doing so. It was moving, so it must have been alive?
But what in the world was--she cut herself short as the 'thing'
shot into the air, making her finally realize that it was a
bird. Of sorts. That was a bird, right? What the hell kind of
bird was that? Watching with interest, Star held her gaze onto
this fantastical object of wonder, attempting to figure out why
it was so uncanny. Despite its uncanny appearance however, Star
certainly had to admit it was fascinating to watch as it flew
around.
She wasn't really anywhere near that graceful in the air. She
was technically a somewhat powerful flyer--thanks to her large
wings--but aerobatics in the air were beyond her. At least
complicated things. Speed was just not for her, either. She was
content with that; she didn't take flying for granted--it was so
freeing, especially to be able to get wherever she wanted with
just a few flaps of her wings--and it was something she always
appreciated. Her thoughts were jarred when her eyes followed the
flying object down during its collision course with the ground
below, a shocked gasp escaping her as, sure enough, it embedded
itself a ways in the ground.
Concerned, Star trotted over to the object--and the pony she'd
noticed had been interacting with it moments before
flight--before speaking quietly--both to announce her presence
and relay her fears. "I hope the poor thing's alright... That
was so interesting to watch." With the close distance she now
had, she was able to see that the bird was, in fact,
metal--which is apparently why it had looked so odd to her. But
then, if he was metal... "I'm surprised something metal was able
to fly so well," she said, reaching a hoof out to the bird in
the ground as if offering her assistance in getting it out of
the ground. "I would've thought it'd be too heavy for something
like that..." She paused for a moment before glancing over to
Haywire. "My name's Star Catcher. Would you like a hoof getting
him out of the ground?"

"And the way you pulled out of that dive? It was fantastic!"
Haywire continued to compliment Bubo, the birds buried head
probably making it difficult to hear his creator and his excited
words, "smoothest of transitions into that loop. remember the
first time you tried to pull that off? Banged up your wing
pretty bad when you crashed, but now just look at you! I bet you
made every other bird out here jealous with those stunts you
were pulling off! You're able to fly with the best of them,
Bubo, and you took waaaay way longer to lock up than usual! I'm
so proud of you!" It... wasn't entirely clear if Bubo was
actually hearing any of this. Both because of how he was
imbedded into the ground, and because of how he was still stuck
frozen the way he'd crashed, wings rigid and metal body about as
stiff as any who hadn't seen his earlier liveliness would
assume.
Ears peeking up at the sound of a voice coming from behind him,
Hay turned to see who had approached, smile shiny and still
carrying the ecstatic smile brought on by his thrill at seeing
Bubo's improvements, "Who, Bubo? He's..." His smile shrunk a
little when he caught sight of the mare who'd approached, his
mind suddenly pulling a blank on what he was about to say as he
listened to her express her concern, interest and disbelief at
what his bird had just accomplished. After shed introduced
herself and offered assistance with removing Bubo from what must
have been an uncomfortable and rather embarrassing position,
something kicked Hay's brain back into operation, the stallions
smile returning then quickly upgrading itself to one of his
almost patented grins that only he could ever really imbue with
so much energy and excitement.
"H-hi!" He greeted, taking a step back and next to Bubo in the
process, "don't worry too much about Bubo, he's shrugged off
worse in the past. In fact, just earlier this week he was caught
in a fight between a book eating machine and a book eating
machine eating machine and he came out of it like a champ. Every
chapter intact!" Even Haywire blinked at how the last thing he
said didn't really make much sense, but his grin remained
radiant all the same as he let it roll off and moved on. "Bubo
is a lot lighter than he looks," Hay replied to her comment over
Bubo's assumed weight, "and he practices his flying eeeevery
day!" He added with a happy nod, as if that would be enough to
put any kind of confusion towards the birds flying to rest.
Explaining exactly how Bubo was able to do what he does would
have probably gone nowhere. Not because Haywire was assuming she
wouldn't be able to understand his explanation, but instead
because he knew nopony would understand his explanation, not out
of incompetence on their part but out of how his explanations
rarely made any sense to anypony but himself. Using his own
silly words for things that already had normal names often made
what he was talking about make no sense at all... He'd be happy
to try and do his best though if she truly proved interested.
Most grew bored when it came to the details he never was able to
explain very well though, ponies usually just noting the novelty
of his inventions for a few moments before moving on.
When she introduced herself, Hay did the same, "Hi, Star
Catcher! My names Haywire! And sure, I bet he'd appreciate some
extra help getting him un-buried. Just grab his wing there and
I'll grab the other, then we should just have to give a few tugs
to pull him loose." Seeing the mare do as he instructed, Haywire
grabbed hold of the opposite wing, it still stuck in its mid
flight position, before he gave a short countdown for the mare
to ready herself, the two then giving one tug, two tugs, three
tugs and four, the final one managing to pull the frozen
mechanical bird free and cause Haywire to stumble back a little
and fall onto his backside. "There we go!" He said, the small
bump he'd taken on his rump apparently not phasing him in the
slightest as grin remained strong while he flipped Bubo over
onto his back to tap on the birds chest.
Bubo, having been stuck in this state for so long, was finally
beginning to recover, his wings bending as he started back up,
the whirring sound coming from inside getting slightly louder as
he came back to his senses. The first thing he saw visually when
he returned to the world he shared with ponies was a pegasus
mare he didn't recognized, the bird immediately giving a series
of energetic chirps and whistles at the sight of her before
calming down some and fluttering himself back upright, him then
giving his body a full shake to loosen back up and throw off any
dirt that was clinging to his body. Afterwards he flapped his
wings to assist the hop he made up to Haywire's shoulder, the
bird then hopping again up to top of the inventor's head where
he spread his wings and whistled a hello to the new mare. Hay
just smiled up at Bubo the same way he had earlier before
grinning happily at Star as he introduced them properly, "Star
Catcher, meet Bubo. Bubo, Star Catcher." Bubo chirped a few
times, him looking to nestling down into Haywire's messy brown
mane as he tilted his head and watched the new pony. She was
only one, and Haywire was right there with him, so Bubo was
comfortable and happy with this meeting, the mechanical bird
being quite friendly whenever he wasn't being shy.

An easy, relaxed smile spread on Star's lips when Haywire
finally seemed to realize what was going on and responded to
her, though a little strangely he responded to some of her first
comments rather than to her offer of assistance. Still, she
watched him intently as she listened to what he said, her
initial look of intrigue devolving into one of confusion when he
mentioned the book-machines or whatever. What the hay did he
just say? Was that some kind of dream he'd had? What was the
purpose of a book-eating machine, even? Left with more questions
than answers, she could only shrug them off when he continued
and introduced himself, resulting in the easy smile coming back
to her face.
At his suggestion that she grab the bird's other wing, Star
nodded once and moved her hoof to its originally intended
destination around one of the wings sticking out of the ground
and tugged slightly... only to not have it budge at all. Seemed
it was stuck in there a lot worse than she thought. But then,
that was a pretty wicked crash... When Haywire began his
countdown, Star readied herself before tugging at the bird's
wings alongside the stallion, her giving a slight, disgruntled
hum as it still remained rooted in the ground. But Haywire
seemed persistent in trying, so Star kept pulling as Haywire
did. Their efforts eventually succeeded, and Bubo was pulled
free from the ground--but their efforts also succeeded in
knocking them both off-balance.
Unlike Haywire, when Star felt herself beginning to fall
backwards, she quickly unfurled her wings and flapped a few
times, lifting herself up into the air to level herself before
gently setting herself back down on the ground and turning her
attention over to the strange 'bird'. Who was now whirring. That
was... good? Maybe? He was at least moving, so she could
consider that a win, especially when it flew onto Haywire and
'chirped' at her. A little amused by that, she giggled briefly
as Haywire introduced them, her confusion as to why passing
quickly as that too was shrugged off. "It is a pleasure to...
make your acquaintance, Bubo," she paused for a moment after
saying that name, almost as if asking if she'd really just said
something that silly. What kind of a name was Bubo?
It was something she could ask, maybe, but for now she had to
make conversation. "He's quite the creation, Haywire. That is,
I'm presuming you created him, and didn't buy him off of
somepony else? Either way, he is a very impressive flyer. I'm
glad I decided to stop and see what that chirping noise was."
Her gaze flicked over to Bubo when she mentioned the chirping,
her eyes searching the metal bird for a moment. For a...
machine, he seemed very attentive. If they could even be
attentive. Of all the things she'd had to learn to do to help
ponies obtain their desires, machines were not one of them...
"What else can it do, Haywire? Or is it just a flyer?"

"Yup! Built him all by myself!" Haywire replied with a small
happy bounce on his front hooves, both he and Bubo then nodding
in unison, one being less obvious to see from his place on the
others head, as if to assure that what the inventor had claimed
was correct. At the compliment on Bubo's flying skills, the
mechanical bird gave another few chirps, though these were a
little quieter as he looked away as if he was a bit bashful
about the praise coming from the mare, this behavior continuing
a bit as she went on to briefly search him with her eyes as
Haywire just replied with a short giggle and, "... Me too..."
Hay then looked up at Bubo with another smile, the bird
eventually giving a whistle in thanks for her earlier compliment
and fluttering his wings a little.
"What else can he do?" Haywire parroted back with another
giggle, "More like 'what can't he do!" He altered, hopping back
up into a standing position and grinning before losing the edge
to his shining expression to look up at Bubo questioningly.
"Uh... What can't you do?" He asked, Bubo returning the look as
well as he could before glancing around for some kind of
example, Haywire doing the same but somehow not making it
difficult for Bubo. Eventually the mechanical bird spotted a
mare further away seeming to be tending to the plants of the
park in an effort to keep it pleasant and well cared for. Bubo,
figuring that would suffice, pointed towards the mare with a
wing and chirped to direct Hay's attention.
"Well..." Hay said, noticing the mare and shrugging, "I guess he
can't garden very well..." Bubo looked off towards the mare,
seemingly wearing as close to a determined look as he could
manage. He would prove that idea wrong someday... Maybe...
Haywire just smiled back at Star and giggled again, for some
reason, "So, how did he look up there from your angle? And what
brings you to the park today? Just going for a walk and enjoying
the weather?"

With her ears perked, Star watched attentively as she waited for
some kind of explanation on what Bubo could... or, apparently,
couldn't do. Slowly, she followed Haywire's gaze when he began
looking around, not entirely sure what to think, or really do at
the moment. Then, when Bubo pointed his wing and chirped, Star
blinked when she noticed this, a look of confusion playing on
her features. So... He really was... sentient? Unsure what to
think of this, Star stared a moment longer at Bubo before
blinking and returning her attention to Haywire when he began
questioning her about various things.
"I guess you could say that, yeah," Star replied to Hay's
question of if she was there for a walk and to enjoy the
weather. "I'm mostly here because I... Well, didn't have much
else to do. I still don't know anypony in this city--I recently
moved in, you see--so I couldn't bug somepony else... The job I
had lined up fell through, so I don't have that to fall back on,
and it's still way too early to visit a bar and meet ponies that
way. So... I just figured I'd take a walk through Canterlot and
see what was going on. It just so happened the first thing I saw
was Bubo here flying loops in the sky. As for how he looked? He
looked very elegant. I daresay he even flew better than I could
have," she said, flashing an easy, charming smile to the bird to
test something. "With the fact that you've built Bubo, and those
goggles on your head... I'm going to guess you're some kind of
inventor, or mechanic, Haywire? What does that job entail?"

Haywire's smile turned into a small frown when he heard Star's
response, "Aww... You don't have any friends in Canterlot yet?
Well, that's okay, you seem really nice so I bet you'll be real
popular soon enough!" As for hearing about her losing her job,
Haywire wasn't so sure what he could say about that one. He'd
offer a simple 'you'll find another no problem!' but his
experience in often needing to pick up small odd jobs here and
there himself in order to pay for what he needed was enough to
make him believe that it wouldn't be quite so easy... Then
again, maybe most just didn't want to hire a pony with such an
affinity for charging things with electricity or rebuilding one
of the available machines to try and improve it only to turn it
into a large toaster. His dip in mood from learning these things
didn't last long though as, while Bubo shyly half hid behind one
of his wings and cooed at the smile from Star, he slapped his
grin back on when Star asked him about his work.
"All kinds of stuff!" He replied, Bubo needing to flap his wings
a bit to maintain his balance from how Hay had bobbed his head
excitedly to emphasis the 'kind' in his sentence, "building,
breaking, tinkering, fire fighting, blinky lights installing,
changing, imagining, brain storming, flash freezing, charging,
blasting, jumping, diving, running, sitting, dodging, firing,
button pressing, lever pulling, welding, assembling, checking,
double checking, post-it note sticking, notes to post taking,
sketching, erasing, sketching some more, surviving, testing...!"
He trailed off as he ran out of breath, the little green
stallion then gasping for air. "... And that's... just to
name... a few... things!" He finished, still gasping but also
grinning.

So, it seemed the bird really was... sentient. Somehow. It
responded to her praise and smile just like some ponies she knew
had before, which was exactly what Star had wanted to test for.
But how was that even possible? It was a machine through and
through--at least from what she could tell--and Haywire did say
he created the bird... Whatever the reason, Star had little time
to contemplate it. As Hay began to list off the things that were
a thing in his job, Star perked her ears up and stared
attentively at him, trying to catch every item he listed off.
She caught most of them, though as he wound down and ran out of
breath, she started to have a little more trouble as he went
until he finally gave in and took a breath.
His statement that that was only just the tip of the iceberg
made her wonder just how exciting his job as an
inventor/mechanic really was. From how he made it seem, it was
possibly one of the most lively occupations to have, which is
much more than she would have thought before. "That's quite the
resume, Haywire. Certainly more than this old weather pony's had
to deal with. Most I ever had to deal with was an electrically
charged cloud, but thankfully I rarely had to take care of
clouds like that since I was never much of a fan of rain... You
make it sound very fulfilling, though. If you've made something
as amazing as Bubo here--something that looks like a machine but
acts like so much more," she said, pausing to flash another easy
smile to the bird resting on Haywire, "I can only wonder what
else you've invented and have stashed away, waiting to be
unveiled to the world..."

Haywire's grin kept strong as Star spoke, the small pony still
breathing a bit heavy as he tried to catch his breath while Bubo
only continued his bashful behavior from his place atop Hay's
head. "I've always been kin did jealous of how pegasi like you
can control the weather the way that you do," Hay said, not
being entirely serious about legitimate jealousy, but honestly
having wished in the past he could replicate what the winged
ponies were capable of through science alone. "You guys always
make it look so easy! I've got a whole bunch of inventions I've
made that are laying around unfinished in my workshop. Results
from testing them vary, but I've never been able to do what you
can naturally.
"And on top of trying to figure those out, I've got whole bunch
of other stuff I have to do to..." Hay said, slowly progressing
into a bit of a quieter tone as he began to start talking more
to himself while thinking about his work, "Need to try and flip
the egg back to cold or at least decide if it and the heat
blasty box won't try to see who could spout more fire again...
My sound system needs to have some work done on its speaker
after the pendulum crashed into it by accident... Then there's
how those designs for the portable sun generator got buried
underneath the remains of that carving machine and the left over
parts for the walker... Might try turning on that room sweeper
again, though last time it almost tried to sweep away the entire
first floor... Have to get the lifty machine out of the street
too... Not like its blocking any kind of traffic though..."
Bubo, noticing how Hay had somehow managed to go into his own
little world, gave a light peck on his head, it bringing the
stallion back as he blinked behind his goggles, glanced left and
right then settled back on grinning at Star. "Anywho, if ever
you wanted to see some more gadgets, you're welcome to visit my
shop whenever! Just, you know, ignore how... everypony tries to
warn you away from it... Might be tricky to find too since most
avoid it... Anywho! What do you like to do? What's your special
talent?"
