"Transmutation?" Really, he should have guessed that that would
be the first thing she's ask about given her talents in it,
"Hmm... I'm not sure if I ahve anything really advanced seeing
how I don't do it myself, but I might have something kicking
around here..." Giving a visual sweep of the shelf he'd come to
check, Mana found no immediate sign of his journal and put his
searching of the rest of the bookshelf on hold to make a quick
turn around in order to check the shelves to his left him for
anything relevant to Ryo's request. He quietly thought out loud
as he tried to remember what he may have picked up on the
subject, the shelves proving to be lacking as he side stepped
further to check others, feeling a slight tinge of worry over
dissqpointing the mare as he stepped even further when his luck
seemed to not be improving. About ready to deliver bad news,
Mana was about to turn back around when his eyes caught
something.
"Ah! Here we go!" He said as he removed a book from the shelves,
"Transmutation: The Beg- oh... It's just the hoofbook. Sorry."
Giving a small apologetic smile to the mare, Mana levitated the
book back in place, then squinted his eyes at the book next to
it. "... Well, why is the important bit printed so small?" He
wondered aloud as he removed a second book and read off the
title. "From One Thing Into Another. For some reason they just
tagged on 'A Study on Transmutation' all small and barely
readable." He showed off the cover and spine, allowing Ryo to
see for herself before offering it to her. "Forgot I picked this
up. Huh. Anyway, have you read this one yet?"

Ryo stayed by the table that had Mana's magic construct on it.
She saw Mana approach a locked shelf and thought that it might
be considered rude if she would have just darted after him. She
kept observing the constantly changing gem formation, but looked
at Mana's direction when he announced that he found a book about
transmutation. Upon realizing what book he found, Mana received
a giggle from Ryo as she turned her whole attention to him.
"That's alright. I didn't expect-" She stopped speaking when
Mana said something and remained silent until Mana showed her
another book he found. Ryo took the book with her magic and
began to read the preface. "I don't think i have read this
one..." She moved on to the first chapter, flipping through the
pages to get the general idea of it's contents.
Unsure if she dared to ask, but she really wanted to read and
possibly study this book. "Could i... Possibly borrow this book
as well? I could send it back in mail later."

Smiling as Ryo replied with how she didn't recognize the book,
Mana only felt his smile grow as he felt he could guess what her
next question would be. "Of course," he answered without pause,
nodding and beaming her way, "I'd be more than happy to lend it
to you. You'd probably get far far more use out of it than I
ever will anyway, so feel free to hold onto it for as long as
you'd like. Actually, that reminds me..." He said after a blink
as his mind recalled the ruby under his armor, the stallion
levitating it out and then gently down onto the table by Ryo,
"Probably best I not keep that on me." Looking back to the
shelves, Mana furrowed his brow, again trying to recall where
the journal he'd been looking for had gone. He wouldn't have
locked it away in that shelf along with those... He hadn't stuck
it up on the other shelves with the rest of his collection if
his scanning of the shelves was anything to go on... So where
else could it be... Well... Maybe...
Looking over his shoulder toward the couch and chair by the
windows, Mana shrugged then did an about face to trot over to
them, figuring it was worth a look at least. Horn lighting up as
his magic wrapped around and then lifted the cushions of the
couch from their proper places, Mana felt an incredible urge to
facehoof from what he saw. Underneath the left cushion laid a
journal that must have somehow managed to wiggle its way into
hiding after Mana had fallen asleep on the couch during one of
his all night study sessions. Setting the right cushion down,
lifting the journal from its hiding place, then resting the
right cushion next to its twin, Mana at down on the couch as he
opened and flipped through a few pages of his journal to check
its contents. "... I think I found it. Finally." He announced,
nodding Ryo over as he skimmed over a few more pages to be sure.

"Yes! I-i mean... Thanks... Hehe" Nervously laughing, Ryo closed
the book and set it down on the nearby table, followed soon by
the ruby she gave to Mana earlier. She looked puzzled when Mana
approached the couch, but she quickly realized what he was
doing, couches are known treasure troves after all. Sometimes
the 'treasure' just wasn't worth it, like when one finds old
food, or an already chewed gum from under the cushions, but all
the lost bits she had discovered as a filly made it all worth
it. Ryo shook her head to break her train of thought when Mana
motioned to her and walked over to the couch. "You did? That's
great. It only took us almost an hour to find" She laughed,
taking a look of the journals cover, before directing her eyes
on it's pages.

"Heh, yeah, sorry about that," Mana said, laughing along and
looking slightly sheepish from his poor but probably involuntary
choice when it came to storing his journal, "I'm usually better
about keeping this stuff organized. Guess I must have fallen
asleep and rolled over it or something." Looking back to the
journal, Mana quickly flipped through its pages as he scanned
over the journals contents, frowning slightly as he neared the
pack cover and then flipping through the journal in reverse for
a second look. "... Darn..." He said under his breath before
speaking up, "I was hoping this one was the one I used when
working on my helmet's amethyst, but instead its the one I
filled out when working on a pair of gems for my boots. This one
here," he continued, flipping to somewhere in the middle of the
journal and tapping a page with a hoof, "this one is on an a
variety of catseye gem I tried to imbue with magics that would
help with how high a pony could jump. And this one," another
flip of the pages, "is about another focusing on speed. These
ones were more meant to be a kind of constant effect instead of
kicking in when needed, like my amethyst, but the benefits of
carrying these have so far been negligible. Still need to figure
out how to keep them active for longer and increase their
strength.
"There are also plenty of notes in here on different gems and
how they react to what I do with them," Mana explained, jumping
between pages and pointing out sections, "Malachite, opal,
beryls, topaz, citrine, sapphires, seraphinite... I think I've
got a decent number listed in here along with a fair bunch of
notes for each actually..." Noticing the page he had with his
small number of notes taken on pyrope garnet Mana considered
removing the page from his journal. Those weren't exactly his
best experiments... "Anywho, would you like to take a look for
yourself?"

"What is it?" Ryo asked, trying to see what Mana saw. It was the
wrong journal? Ryo didn't mind. When Mana told her what kind of
enchantment experiments we logged there, she got more and more
excited to study it. She listened carefully while Mana listed
different gems he had experimented on. Ryo already had ideas
popping in her mind and couldn't wait to try them, but they
would have to wait on paper, documented first though since her
financial situation was pretty weak at the moment. She would
have to properly enchant gems first too...
"A-absolutely." Ryo nodded, her eyes beaming with excitement
when Mana offered his journal for her to look at.

Mana grinned, Ryo's beaming eyes holding his own as he started
having silly thoughts and felt his grin become a bit silly to
reflect them. "Well, you have to give me a kiss on the cheek
first..." that's probably what Thunder would have said in this
situation... Mana not being able to help but compare how his
friend was so much more comfortable and loose with these kinds
of things than he was. Mana wasn't sure if he'd ever be able to
be so bold as to try something like that, but the idea did cause
his cheeks to somehow flush a bright enough red to actually show
through the dye staining his face. That seemed odd though... Why
would it affect him that much so suddenly? Unless... wait... did
he actually hear those words? In... his voice? Grin dropped,
blush strong, and ears pinning back, Mana realized he'd actually
said his "trade" idea out loud... right to Ryo's face. "U-uh-um!
I-I m-mean! Uh..." He stuttered out now convinced he'd just
messed everything up with his slip of the tongue and being
unable to think of a way to somehow recover, "... Uh..."

Ryo flinched back at Mana's proposition. A kiss? They never
talked about a kiss. Maybe it was some kind of thing she wasn't
aware of. She was confused, started to feel very nervous and
began to feel panicky. "A-a-a-a... A ki-k-kiss?... " For a
moment Ryo considered just leaving this overly awkward
situation, but her confusion and authentic curiosity for this
request kept her on her place, though she herself didn't know
why she didn't leave. She tried to think rationally. Mana had
said his "request" way too casually compared to the nervous
stallion he had been not too long ago, but her brains couldn't
process anything rational at the moment.
"W-what d-do you me-mean?" She asked, confusion visible in her
features.

"I-I'm sorry!" Mana apologized, trying to fix what he'd just
done, the guard standing up from his seated position on the
couch and having his ears pin as far back as they'd go, "I
w-wasn't thinking and that just s-slipped out! Just y-you
were... and w-well... I-I was... just thinking and..." Sighing,
Mana dropped his head, the unicorn staring at the floor and
feeling like a fool, "I'm sorry, Miss Ryo..." He apologized
again, adding "miss" back into the way he addressed her as he
felt whatever they'd had going was just sabotaged by his idiocy,
"you don't have to... k-kiss me... just... Sorry..." His horn
lit up again as he offered his journal to the mare, Mana being
unable to even look up at her as he continued to mentally kick
himself.

Ryo subconsciously accepted the journal, taking it with her
hooves rather than her magic. She looked forward to the spot
Mana had been moments ago. Ryo realized that it had indeed been
an accident and she wasn't mad or angry, she was extremely
embarrassed and blushing harder than ever. Mana must have
actually meant what he had said about wanting a kiss... She was
in a situation that was completely unknown to her. Somepony
liked her... She bit her lip, wanting to say something but she
simply could not open her mouth to do so.
Ryo remained silent for some time before she slightly turned her
head to Mana's direction and said with calm voice. "I thought...
That we agreed that just Ryo is enough."
