Transmutation was something Mana, surprisingly, wasn't very well
read about, him knowing a few things about it and the general
idea behind it but never having fully delved into the subject
and researched it properly. Because of this he, inbetween taking
notes and giving polite nods to show he was listening, let his
mind wander as it explored ideas regarding how far one could go
when it came to replacing or mixing parts of gemstones together.
He wondered if one could go so far as to possibly create new
types of gemstones entirely through this process, and from there
the possibilities truly did seem endless. This obviously spurred
some thoughts regarding his own projects, them having gemstones
take on a very important and central role.
"Just how far do you believe you can go when you transmute a gem
with a metal?" He asked curiously after the mention of
orichalcum, the guard only having handled the metal a few times
in the past himself for studying as it tended to be rather
expensive and difficult for him to get a hold of, "would you say
you could possibly form entirely new alloys through this
process? Perhaps take a stronger metal so as to balance its hit
to its durability out with its addition of specific properties
from certain gems and create something useful and completely
unique?"
At the question regarding his own work, Mana gave a small shake
of his head while taking another sip of his coffee, "My projects
probably aren't as impressive or interesting as your
transmutation. Mostly mine deal with trying to experiment with
the way certain gems resonate with magic that's being
manipulated just right. For example, the gem set into my helmet
has several enchantments I've put onto it myself. First and
foremost its supposed to kick in and assist me in focusing and
maintaining my mental strength should I begin to draw on too
much magical energy at once, then it has smaller enchantments
that deal with such things as if I was to receive a heavy blow
to the head it would attempt to quickly throw some minor and
relatively basic healing magic to try and lessen the damage.
"It's something that might be similar to your idea for a
battery," he continued, glancing down at his helmet for a second
and then back, "though mine is more like a spell being charged
into a gem and kept ready to be triggered during specific
circumstances. Like an automatic spell scroll. Less of a battery
to draw on reliably for energy and more like something that can
be expended and possibly burnt out quickly when needed. Or at
least that's how it is as of right now. Still working on it of
course. But now... hmm... You know, the types, sizes and
condition of gems I use have a significant effect on my
results... but if you're able to transmute them... Makes me
wonder..."

"Only sky is the limit... And... My wallet. Materials i use
aren't cheap. I have a... Way... to acquire certain metals but
it's always better to get them in their original form. Creating
a completely new alloys though..." Ryo tapped her muzzle with a
hoof. "I'd say it's possible. I haven't studied metals like i
have gemstones, but i can re-arrange their structure just like i
do with gemstones. Like i said before, they weaken in the
process, but that is definitely something i should try. Hmmm..."
Ryo took a hardcover book from her saddlebag, accompanied by
another pen. She flipped open a empty page and began to scribble
a paradigm on it.
"I have tried enchanting gemstones as well, but only successful
one has been a topaz that illuminated light. I don't even wanna
talk about the magic beacon i tried to use while i tried to
learn teleportation. I don't know about the impressiveness of
either of our projects, but i do find your work interesting.
Such enchantments are way over my level of magical expertise."
She kept drawing and writing, every now and then looking at Mana
while the pen held in her magic kept racing across the page.
"Like an emergency backup. That's kinda clever actually.
Preparing the spell beforehoof instead of reserving huge amount
of power to do everything on the spot." Ryo ceased her
scribbling and raised an eyebrow at Mana's slightly mysterious
ponder.
"Makes you wonder... What?"

Mana grimaced a little in worry when Ryo mentioned that she had
her own special "way" of acquiring expensive materials for
herself, his eyes meeting hers and conveying a silent plea for
what shed said to not mean what he thought it meant. As a guard,
he felt her "way" sounded kind of suspicious, but he was
desperately hoping it had no actual reason to be, half because
then he'd have no choice but to do something about it, something
he wasn't very eager to do to her seeing how he liked her, and
half because he already knew that Ryo had trouble with guards
that gave her trouble over assuming she was suspicious out of
her simple nervousness around them.
Trying not to let this ruin anything out of having his job force
a question to be asked, Mana attempted to, for now at least,
push this issue to the back of his mind and hopefully focus on
their discussion first. Her mentioning of being interested in
looking into creating her own unique alloys manger to bring a
smile back to the guard, him happy to have possibly contributed
a new idea for her studies. His smile turned into a small grin
when the mare claimed his work was interesting as well as clever
in its own way. Her query into his trailing off caused him to
hum in thought.
"Well," he began, the pen he'd borrowed scratching a few more
notes into his paper as he flicked his eyes between it and Ryo,
"as I mentioned, the composition of a gem has a strong impact on
how effective my experiments are. For example, some gems tend to
be unable to handle the magic I try to make them resonate with
and fracture or even shatter once pushed to their limits, so,
your transmutation just made me start thinking... It sounds like
you could mix gems together to create exactly what you want...
Having such customization with my gems would cause the
possibilites for my own projects to possibly become almost
endless as well...I might have been able to assist with that
battery idea of yours as well since I have experience in
enchanting and imbuing magic into gems... It's just, I had the
thought of us possibly having found each other to have been
rather helpful had we met sooner... Before you... well... you
know..." He glanced over at the clock above the counter, trying
to remember when the next train out of Canterlot was supposed to
leave so as to attempt an estimate of how mu h longer he had to
enjoy the mare's company.

Ryo blinked at Mana's silent plea, not understanding it's
meaning. She ignored it as Mana began to tell her about his
reason for trailing off earlier.
Why didn't she bump into this guard before? It was always some
"smart guy" cracking jokes, not an awkward, polite egghead with
similar interest to hers. "Yeah... It would have helped a lot."
She glanced at the clock again. "Well i.. I..." Ryo began to
stutter when she was reminded again that she was going to leave.
Should she revert her plans to move because of this? Maybe...
No, she decided that it was for the best to proceed with her
earlier plan to move away from Canterlot, to start a new, better
life. But maybe...
"Maybe... We could do some kind of 'long-distance research'
together. I would create gems with different kinds of
properties, then send them over to you, and you send me back
information on how they acted under magical enchanting."

Mana wore a small and sad smile as Ryo began to stutter, his
ears drooping slightly as he assumed by what she was saying that
her next words were going to be about how she needed to get
going or begin preparing for her trip. His mind wandered to how
this just wasn't fair... He so rarely ever tried to do so much
as talk with a pretty mare that, of course, the one time he'd
actually gotten over his nerves and managed to actually meet,
have doughnuts with, and become interested in one she just had
to also be leaving the entire city that same day. He wanted to
stomp a hoof in annoyance over how fate was forcing him to only
have met Ryo in her final hours within the city, so many
questions he wanted to ask and things he wanted to do now, both
in regards to her work and the mare herself, and he didn't seem
like he'd be able to ask them...
Then Ryo had an idea that fuses Mana to blink. 'Long-distance
research'? That... sounded simple enough. They'd just need to
mail a few things back and forth, and such activities would
probably leave plenty of room and excuse for sending personal
letters along with notes and gems being shipped off... Maybe
they would get to stay in contact after all? "That sounds
wonderful." Mana replied, ears losing their droop as he knew
this was a far far more desirable alternative to losing any
chance of communication all together. "And, hey, it would
certainly give an excuse for me to visit some time to
collaborate, yeah?" He said, not expecting his words to hold any
real truth with how his job kept him places, but still hoping
all the same. "Um... Since we'll be working together, sorta,
now, kinda, would you.... like to maybe take a look at my
helmets gem?" He offered, his magic lifting the piece of armor
up so as to let her see it, "to get an idea on what kinds of
gems actually work for me? Or for this particular set of
enchantments at least?"

"Would i?" Ryo said eagerly. She was about to take the helmet
from Mana's magic with her own, but then thought that it might
be considered rude. She instead turned a new page on her book
and began to draw a model of Mana's helmet and the gem attached
to it, writing footnotes here and there. On the adjacent page
she drew a bigger picture of the amethyst, listing the different
enchantments Mana told her he had enchanted it with. After
finishing her drawing, She opened her saddlebag and floated a
red gem out from it and set it on the table.
"Here's something in return." Inside the red jewel there was a
visible grid that seemed to have a purple centers. "My newest
creation. It's a ruby, that has been given a twelve parted
amethyst core held together by orichalcum grid. I want you to
have it for your experiments, but please be careful. I have not
yet tested it myself." She floated another, almost identical
ruby on the table. "I have another one for myself. We can share
our discoveries, so that i can hopefully make it better." She
pushed one of the rubies towards Mana.
"Sounds good?"

Seeing somepony be so interested in his customization of his
helmet brought a happy grin to Mana's face, the unicorn's
temporarily stained face lighting up as he watched the mate draw
and take notes on his helmet, the gem set into it and the
enchantments it carried. When shed finished with her note taking
and produced the ruby Mana's eyes took on a shine of interest,
them eagerly pouring over the jewel's unique changes as he gave
a small but audible "oooh". "That sounds great!" He replied,
beaming a smile at the mare as he accepted the ruby in his magic
and floated it closer to his face to get a better look at it,
the pen he'd been allowed to borrow scribbling down a few things
a little bit messily as he wrote and examined the ruby at the
same time. "... Wow..." Clearly impressed, Mana shifted his eyes
over towards Ryo's before having them return to the ruby then
drop his gaze to his papers. Still under the impression that his
own projects weren't as impressive as the mares transmutation,
the guard began to feel a little shy in the face of this
example. "... So, what inspired this particular creation?" He
asked, pen ready to record any answer given as he went back to
inspecting the gem and wondering how the changes made could
affect how it handled his magic charges and enchantments.

"The idea is to charge all twelve amethysts inside it. The ruby
is meant to greatly reduce the rate it loses it's charge,
returning the energy that's unnecessarily released when it's
used for whatever task it's meant to be used, back to the cores.
With the way the amethysts are placed, i wish to achieve a loop
between the gems, so that they give a slight passive charge to
other gems around it, possibly further increasing it's
longevity." While speaking, Ryo returned her book and the other
ruby back to her saddlebag. "After you told me about your
enchantment experiment, i thought that it might be possible to
enchant every amethyst individually. Since they're separated
from each other by an orichalcum grid."
"But i say this again. Please be careful with that." She said
pointing at the ruby Mana was inspecting. "I have not done any
kind of experiments to them yet. Steel didn't want me to blow up
the workshop again, so i decided to wait until i get to my new
house."
Ryo dug a train schedule from her saddlebag and began to look
for timetables of trains that would still go to Ponyville today.

As Ryo gage her explanation of the ruby, Mana levitated it up
and next to his helmet, eyes shifting between it and the
amethyst set into the armor as his kind compared the two.
Amethyst had worked well for the successful enchantments and
experiments he'd been performing over his gems, and to have a
ruby mixed with orichalcum and containing twelve individual
amethyst... His pen scratched away on his paper as he recorded
all of what Ryo shared with him, every detail being important to
him as he soon began to run out of space, the guard accidentally
jotting half of her last word down on the table they were using,
him quickly picking up on his mistake and gritting his teeth as
his eyes briefly checked to see of anyone had been watching from
the counter.
"Uh... Heh..." He said, turning back to Ryo with some
embarrassment before trying to shake it off and continue, "don't
worry about me being careful, I'll be treating this ruby like
its made out of explosive glass for the first few tests or at
least until I get a better feel for it." Seeing her pull out a
train schedule, Mana put his helmet back on and gently slipped
the ruby under his armor along with his now full papers, him
offering the pen back to the mare with a smile, though his eyes
looked a bit dissapointed again. "... Wish I had something to
give you too," he admitted, "I would offer taking a quick trip
to my place to pick up one of my research journals to share some
of my work, but... Well..." He nodded at the train schedule, the
guard already surprised by how Lu ky he'd been that shed stayed
around for as ling as she had.

"Good" Ryo nodded when Mana assured her that he would be
careful.
"Well... I don't know about you, but i don't think i can run to
the station in..." She looked at the clock "...In 37 seconds...
The last train for today leaves in three hours. I don't require
anything from you in return, but i have to admit. I'd love to
learn more about your research." Ryo said, returning the pen
Mana gave back to her, back to her saddlebag.
"So... What should we do now?" Ryo asked, wondering if she still
had something she should do before leaving Canterlot. "I
understand if you... have to get back to work. But if not,
maybe... we could stop by your place for that research journal?"
