Mana felt some relief as Ryo assured him he hadn't made things
weird. He didn't quote catch what she had said afterwards but
tried to smile as Ryo began to answer his question, only for it
to slowly weaken and become worried when she stuttered and was
unable to form a complete sentence. Uh oh... He did make things
awkward... He was about to try and apologize again, the fact
that it would probably only make things worse briefly visiting
his mind, but stopped when Ryo began to ask her own about what
exactly they were doing here, the sudden string of questions
       taking the guard off guard.
Mana blinked then glanced around at the other ponies in the shop
who had begun to stare at them, the guard throw on the
authoritative mask he'd been trained to wear in an attempt to
deflect their annoyed interest on Ryo and himself. Regardless of
if it did anything Mana looked back to the mare across from,
dropping the mask he was wearing to show a more apologetic
expression. "Uh... D-Did you not want this to be?" He asked,
feeling like am idiot now that he'd thought he'd made
assumptions about what he and Ryo were doing. What if she'd
thought this was just a friendly talk? What of Mana had been
getting so stressed and nervous over something that didn't even
       cross Ryo's mind?
"You haven't done anything wrong..." He went on to try and
answer the rest of her questions, "and I can guarantee you that
Thunder was probably just joking around when he said that..."
Note to self: murder Thunder later... "The only times I've ever
heard about two ponies sitting at a table together under candle
light is either when nobles get together or when their
characters in a... r-romance novel... I'm no expert, but I've
always just kind of assumed a date is when two ponies who are
interested in each other take time to get to know one
another..." She probably wasn't interested in him though. Ahh,
he was such an idiot! Mana stared down at the table for a few
seconds, the coffee he'd distanced himself from before being
dragged towards him by his magic.
"... You've never been on a date before?" Mana eventually asked
with a flick of his eyes up at the mare, feeling a little
surprised by the news as he assumed he was the inexperienced one
here. "I haven't exactly been on many myself... Very few
actually, most of which I don't really think felt like dates to
the other pony... I was actually kind of worried you'd pick up
on how unfamiliar I was when it came to this kind of thing and
think less of me for it, since I just sort of assumed a pretty
mare like you would ha-" he cut himself off with a blink and
apologetic grimace, him not knowing if what he'd just said was
appropriate or whether or not she would be offended by it
somehow, the guard opening his mouth and stuffing it with his
bear claw similarly to how he'd done so with his doughnut
earlier to try and shut himself up.

       "I... I don't know... I-if it is, it's my first date a-and i'm
not p-prepared. I've done no research of a-any kind on the
subject... And i'm completely clueless on how dates work." Ryo
let out a sigh of relief When Mana told her she hasn't done
anything wrong, at least not yet. So candle lit dinner only
happen between two important ponies... And in silly love
stories... Ryo was deep in thought, her eyes locked on the
table. "Two ponies who are... interested in each other..." She
repeated under her breath, suddenly biting her lip and blushing
when she realized that Mana must be interested in her, but
nopony was ever interested in her, neither in her company, why
       would Mana be?
"T-that's right..." She said, directing her still red face to
Mana. "Other ponies don't really want my company, so i always
tried not to bother them..." She grabbed her drink with her
hooves and took a long sip of it as she listened Mana tell about
what little experience he had in dating. "But you've been very
kind to me, why would i pick on you for something like that?
Especially since you're not picking on my... Faults."
Ryo's face got brighter red after Mana's compliment. She
remained quiet for a moment before saying "I'm not that
       pretty..."

Mana was silent as he listened to then thought about what Ryo
had said, him working on the larger than normal bite of his bear
claw he'd stuffed into his mouth to stop himself from talking
and finding it to be both highly effective at its job as well as
a little difficult to chew and get down. Finally managing to
finish it off, Mana stares at the table on front of him, the
heavily injured bear claw taking up most of his visual attention
as he studied its new wound and tried to figure out what to say.
"... I think you're pretty..." He eventually tried, not knowing
anymore if he was saying the 'right' or 'wrong' thing but not
worrying as much about it now that he new that Ryo had no prior
experiences to compare his slip ups to, "... Really pretty
actually..." Again his dyed face hid a small blush at the
admission as his eyes flicked up to see her before falling back
to the table, him noticing her blush and having that only cause
his own to intensify, "I'm... also not really sure if a date is
something you can really research, Ryo. If it was I'd probably
be an expert on the subject instead of a nervous stallion trying
to think of the right things to say... and probably failing
pretty bad at it... That's why I was worried you'd think less of
me. Like you'd laugh at my failing attempts to try and figure
out the right thing to do here..." He paused taking a breath and
feeling relief thst such a thing wasn't going to happen, the
guard then trying again to look up at her but this time actually
attempting to smile, "And I wanted your company. I wanted to
come here with you to talk and hopefully learn something about
who you were... You are kind of the whole reason I'm here right
now actually..." Another pause, this one accompanied by a shift
in his expression, it turning a light shade of confused, "I
don't get it... Why wouldn't somepony want your company? I
haven't exactly seen any 'faults' in you since we met. Epecially
none that would make anypony want to avoid you... Why would
anypony want to pick on you?"

"He... He thinks... That i'm... Pretty" Ryo thought, her
uncertain frown slowly turning into a genuine smile. "Well... If
you say so..." She just felt like giving Mana a hug, but maybe
not just yet. She doesn't want to possibly ruin the moment with
sudden awkward hugs. She still had a hard time believing that
somepony actually was interested in her company. "T-those are...
       K-kind words..."
Ryo laughed "Wow... Dating must be hard then... If there is no
written literature to explain it to somepony like me or you. I
didn't want this to be a date, because i was afraid that i might
do something wrong, but now... I don't mind if this is a... a
date. I-i'm flattered... And i... I appreciate that you find my
company worth your time." She began to giggle. Her giggling
slowly turning into a hearty laughter. "Two *giggle* Two awkward
eggheads on a *snicker* On a date..." She was still blushing,
but she didn't really mind it anymore. It couldn't possibly get
       anymore awkward.
She tried her best to cease her laughter, she still kept smiling
after Mana's question about her. Her smile did falter a bit, but
she didn't want to frown now. "I-i think one of the biggest
reasons is that i chose blacksmithing over a medical researcher
or a royal guard like my parent's were. The forge i worked in
isn't the best one in Canterlot, it was a rather small business
compared to some other ones here. Some ponies said that i let my
parent's down for picking such a "lowly" profession compared to
theirs. Other one was my father. Don't get me wrong, he took a
good care of me, but he is also know as a local alcoholic. A
local drunk. Then there's my reputation as a "suspicious" pony."
She decided to take a bite from her other doughnut that had
remained untouched for a good while. "I just began to ignore
everypony, and they did the same, for the most part. That's one
reason for why i decided to move to Ponyville, to maybe get a
fresh start for myself, and hopefully find something i'm truly
       good at."

"I do say so." Mana said, the guard taking on another smile that
soon widened at the sight of the mare's own then managing to
nearly double when she said she was fine with calling this time
they were spending together a date. Welp, guess that made it
official, this was indeed a date. No silly candles to be seen of
course, though Mana bet that Thunder would have used that to
tease both Ryo and himself if he ever heard about the trip up it
had caused. When Ryo began to giggle Mana felt a wave of relief
wash over him, all the left over nervousness and stress about
this situation washing away as he enjoyed the sound, it becoming
contagious and effecting him as he quietly laughed along with
her before fully joining in when she summed up the scene, Mana
finding the use of " awkward eggheads" to be rather fitting from
how they'd both been handling things. Mana felt good after that
bout of laughter, the dyed faced unicorn ignoring the confused
states they were both reviving from the ponies at the
neighboring tables as the small scene they'd been making had
transition from nervous stuttering confusion to sudden upbeat
       giggles and snickering.
When things moved on to his questions and her answers for them,
Mana quieted down and perked up hos ears, the stallion being
both curious and concerned over what could possibly cause
anypony to want to avoid the mare. The first reason caused him
to only feel more confused... "You aren't your parents though,"
he said, sounding like the idea of having somepony's level of
worth be determined by comparing their choices to those of their
parents just simply didn't make sense to him, "and I don't
understand how anypony could call being a blacksmith a 'lowly'
profession. Like I said on the way to the train station,
blacksmithing is a very respectable set of skills. Heck, if it
wasn't for this and the pony who made it," he tapped the silver
armor protecting his chest as his magic lifted his remaining
pastry up to his mouth, "I wouldn't be around to enjoy this bear
claw." He took a small bite as if for emphasis, him chewing with
       a smile.
The smile didn't help with the rest of what shed said though, it
weakening a little at the mention of her alcoholic father. He
wasn't sire of it was his place to even comment on that one, the
guard glad to hear that the stallion had still been good to his
daughter despite his problem, but also understanding that it is
most likely a sensitive subject all the same, especially if she
already was being given a hard time over it. "... But again, you
aren't your parents," he couldn't help but point out, again not
understanding why she would be having troubles because of
something somepony else had done, "I don't see why your
father's... drinking should be something that makes ponies avoid
you..." The mention of her own bad reputation for being
"suspicious" caused a small frown to play at Mana's lips, the
guard still wanting to somehow find a way to straighten that out
for her but also still not believing he the right to ask
directly about what happened to her yet. Instead his mind locked
       onto something else she said.
"... You're moving to Ponyville?" He asked, tone of voice
sounding dissapointed as his ears dropped slightly before he
cleared his throat and tried to shake it off. Aww... He'd only
just met her, they were finally really talking and on an
official date, but she was leaving the city... "So that's why
you were taking the train?" Mana had thought, or possibly wanted
to believe, that Ryo's earlier talk of catching the next train
out was only over a visit to the small town of Ponyville and
wasn't a farewell to Canterlot. Darn it... He'd only just met
her... "I recall you mentioning before how you were hoping to
try something different from blacksmithing. I think baking
and... um... gardening, you said? I also remember mentioning my
interest in studying magic and I think you said you wouldn't
mind doing that either. I guess we really are eggheads, huh?" He
chuckled, smiling again though this time it wasn't quite as
happy, it being used more to cover up his dip in mood at
learning of Ryo's planned permanent departure from the city he
       lived and worked in.

"You're right, i'm not. My dad always wanted me to become a
scholar, he tried to encourage me to study, but books and
sitting still didn't interest me back then. Only later when i
began to study gemstones i got interested in written literature.
He would probably have succeeded if my mom didn't oppose him and
keet telling me that i'm free to pursue anything i wanted." Ryo
finished her second pastry and took a sip of her drink. "I
really liked to work at the forge. Steel Ingot taught me how to
properly handle metals and how to use all the tools, though i
didn't use them much after i found out i can transmute things. I
think they meant it to be an insult towards Steel, him being an
professional blacksmith, i was only a assistant of sorts after
all. I didn't technically work there, i just did my part of the
work, since i didn't want to live there without somehow repaying
his kindness." She finished her drink, placing the empty cup on
the table next to the box the pastries were in.
"*chuckle* Steel is a bit too good friend with alcohol, but he
has a certain kind of control over it. He has to get it, but
once he reaches the limit of being drunk, he stops. Talk about
that came in much later, though i know that my dad got a few
cracks about it every now and then as well, Steel has always
       been a close family friend."
Ryo's ears dropped down after Mana's question about her
intentions to move away from Canterlot and seeing what kind of
reaction Mana had to this information. "Y-yeah. I've been
planning it for a good while now. I bought a house from there a
while back." She had completely forgotten the fact that she was
about to leave everything behind. In the morning she didn't feel
like she was leaving behind anything too important, but now she
felt different. "Hey, maybe i return here someday... Maybe...
After i have made something of myself... Maybe..." She felt
stupid after saying that and decided to stop her blabbering.
Ryo giggled again. "Yeah. I'm afraid that we are indeed...
Eggheads." She remained silent, but managed to keep smiling.

"Maybe..." Mana replied, trying to keep his more cheery mask up
as he doubted she actually would return anytime soon, especially
since she was going down to Ponyville to start something fresh
and new, "and, hey, maybe I'll get sent down there on a job
sometime and well bump into each other?" Not and impossibility,
but Mana's assignments often sent him much... further away that
such a close town as Ponyville. It could still happen though,
       right?
Mana chuckled at the confirmation of both of their statuses as
eggheads, him taking another bite of him bear claw and washing
it down with a sip of his coffee, "He sounds like he had a good
grip on it," he commented over her explaining of Steel's own
drinking, the guard smiling when she mentioned how he had been
kind to her. Mana still believed Blacksmithing to be a set of
skills worthy of respect so the idea of somepony wanting to
insult somepony else over it again did nothing but make him
confused. These ponies did realize how many pf the things they
use on a daily basis relied on parts and pieces forged by a
       blacksmith, didn't they?
The mentioning of yer study on gemstones had also snagged Mana's
interest again, him smiling a little more excitedly a he said,
"Right, you did mention transmuting gemstones earlier and I've
been curious ever since. I don't know if I've said anything
about it yet, but I've been working on a few projects involving
gems myself, these ones here set in my armor being my current

Ooooh, she's been wanting to ask about his projects? Nopony ever
asked about his projects! Thunder usually just zoned out or fell
asleep with his eyes open when he mentioned them, and he didn't
really share them with anypony else. Would be nice to actually
speak with somepony who's interested and wouldn't onto their own
       shoulder halfway through his explanation.
"Thank you," Mana said, accepting the writing materials and
taking them in his magic as he his final bite of bear claw and
finished it off. Never being without some form of note taking
was a good idea just as Ryo said, and it was common for guards
to carry around small notepads for writing down descriptions,
details and what witnesses could tell them m, but Mana had a
fairly good memory and his kinds of assignments could often be a
touch too fast pace to allow a pause for note taking, so he'd
personally practiced his ability to just remember what hee been
told as an alternative. Also, the last time he'd brought a
notepad with him on the job a certain Pegasus had gotten a hold
of it and created a small flip book animation of a few crudely
drawn stick figures battling each other in the corner of every
       one of the pages.
"Hmm..." Mama replied to Ryo's question, pen and paper already
being put to work as they take the first few details of what her
goal was for her wor, "well... Um... How about you just start
from the beginning? What gave you the idea and how did you learn
that you could transmute things? Also, how did your work start
out, as in, what did you try first and how well did that go for

"I kinda found out my transmutation ability by accident. I got
frustrated when i was trying to forge a blade into a rather
strange shape requested by a customer and then... I just began
to slowly force it to shape with my magic." Ryo explained,
keeping short pauses every now and then so that Mana could write
everything he wanted down. "First i kinda thought that it was
just a random occurrence, but slowly i started to get the hang
of it and learned to control it. I began to use it to mold
metal, making magnificent details in metal easily, but i later
found out that metal gets weaker as i transmute it, making it
kinda pointless to use in blacksmithing."
"Then i began to try different materials, others reacting better
that others. But gemstones, they have a curious way how they
behave. I can break them apart into small particles and mix them
around. For example, i can take weak particles away from a ruby,
and replace them with stronger ones from another ruby, or even
another gemstone. Possibilities are endless." Ryo took a quick
glance at a doughnut shaped clock hanging above the counter. The
next train was about to leave, but she decided to wait and take
the next one. She couldn't possibly leave now when there was
still so much to talk about.
"I have tried to transmute gems with metals and so far
orichalcum has proven to be the best one to use. It makes them
more durable when given a magic charge."
       "Does your project involve transmutation?"
