A Bite to Eat
By: Mana Burn Date: February 14, 2014, 2:26 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Donut Joe's was pretty busy that day, plenty of ponies coming in
and purchasing box after box after bag after napkin full of
fried and frosted dough of all kinds of shapes, sizes, shades
and flavors. Mana burn, as was probably stereotypical for a
guard, absolutely loved the smell of fresh donuts, his mouth
beginning to almost water a bit as he entered the shop alongside
Ryo and paused to take a long deep inhale of the smell before
giving a quick glance over the treats on display. Bit of a line
right now, probabmy a result of the recently arrived train
dropping off its passengers, Mana frowning a little as his
stained face showed a small degree of annoyance before wiping it
clean of the feeling and glancing over at the tables nearby.
"How about you tell me what you would like?" Mana offered,
turning back to Ryo, "I'll sit through the line and pick it up
while you get us a spot by the windows, or wherever you'd
prefer?"

As Ryo entered the store with Mana, she immediately noticed the
huge amount of customers currently waiting to get their share of
the pastries. She was about to suggest that they'd go to a
different place, when Mana volunteered to wait in the line, like
a... Gentlecolt... "I-if you want..."
Ryo turned her head towards the displays to avoid blushing. She
looked through the selection of different doughnuts, wondering
if she should try something new, or take something she knew was
good. "Hmmm... I think i stick with the classic. Two chocolate
Doughnuts and... And..." She looked at the possible drinks she
could get with them. "...Maybe just a regular hot chocolate to
go with them. And no candles-... i mean... I-... I'll go get us
that table." She grinned nervously. After giving her 'order' to
Mana, Ryo went to reserve a table by the window. She set her
saddlebags on the floor and sat down to wait.

"Two chocolates and a hot chocolate to go with em. Got it." Mana
repeated back to her with a smile and nod, mostly just so he'd
be hearing the order a second time and having that better keep
it in memory. Smile weakened slightly as the stallion blinked in
confusion from the mention of candles. Candles? Was there...
some kind of special going on in the shop that involved putting
candles on the donuts? A brief glance around showed no sign of
such candles. Was it her birthday or something? He shrugged
after Ryo left to go pick out a table, the stallion then taking
his place in the line as he waited to order their sweet treats
and drinks. Speaking of... what did he want to enjoy today...
He'd had his mind set on cinammon glazed on his way over from
the train station, but after seeing everything on display... he
was a little undecided...
... Was it her birthday? Mana was a little worried now. Was he
supposed to somehow pick up on what she'd said and take some
kind of hint from it, or was he simply reading too deep out of
not wanting to mess something up? Uh oh... Now he wasn't so sure
what to do, the guard chewing on the inside of his lip a little
as he felt some nervousness return to him. Thankfully a
distraction from his worry came in the form of the stallion in
front of him, the stranger having turned around to glance
towards to entrance at the sound of the door opening as though
he was expecting to see somepony only to catch sight of Mana in
his silver gem laden guard armor and stained face. The stallion
blinked at the sight, then Mana blinked back as he wasn't sure
what to tell him. "... Training exercise gone wrong." He
eventually threw out there, it earning another blink from the
other stallion before he slowly turned back around and took
several steps closer to the counter, the line having moved some
during the distraction. Yeah. Training exercise. Good enough.
Wasn't long after that awkwardness that Mana reached the counter
himself, him giving his order then causing a brow to be raised
at the bride question regarding any possible special orders
involving candles being served that day. When he was given an
answer that dismissed such an idea, Mana cleared his throat,
gave a "thank you" for his food and then decided it best if he
tried not to attempt conversation with many other ponies for the
day. Ryo was, of course, an exception however, the guard finding
her seated by the windows and giving her a smile as he delivered
the small box of doughnuts and two cups he'd been holding in his
magic. "Here you go, two chocolates and a hot one." He said,
opening the box to show off its contents and setting the hot
chocolate he'd bought in front of her. The other contents of the
box? One cinnamon glazed doughnut and a bear claw. Because why
not? "And as you can see, they are candle free." He chanced with
some playfulness, something that was not very easy for him right
now, before taking a nervous sip of his lightly sweetened coffee
as he sat down across from the mare. "So you come to Joe's
often, huh? I can't recall the last time I was here. Definitely
wasn't this busy though I know that."

Ryo was looking outside from the window, observing probably the
tamest argument she had ever seen between two noble ponies. She
couldn't hear what they were saying, but they looked angry and
were every now and then jabbing each other. She ignored the
clash of the nobles when Mana arrived with their pastries and
drinks. "Thank you." She said giggling lightly at the candle
comment. She took a sip of her drink, looking satisfied at it's
taste.
"I stop here every now and then, usually only for a drink." She
leaned a bit closer and lowered her voice "I don't like alcohol,
so i usually end up here on weekend evenings." Ryo broke a
quarter from one of the doughnuts and ate it. "It's usually
pretty quiet when i'm here. I try to avoid the lunch hours, it
gets crowded quickly." She wasn't sure what she should say next.
She had answered Mana's question, so she remained silent, eating
a piece of pastry from time to time.
"Act casual. There's no candles, so this is not a formal date."
Ryo kept telling herself in her head, while somehow managing to
not look nervous.

Mana nodded as Ryo spoke, politely letting her know he was
listening as he remembered the helmet that was continuing to
protect his head. Figuring it was probably silly to wear such a
thing when simply having doughnuts with a mare, and assuming he
could handle things without the armor should the unthinkable
event of flying pastries become a reality, he removed his
helmet, it leaving a very distinct outline on his face of where
the dye had hit him earlier as it hovered in the air for a
moment before he decided on having it be set down on the floor
next to him.
"You always get a hot chocolate?" Mana asked, noticing how she
had fallen silent and become a little worried he wasn't keeping
her interest, "if this shop was any closer to where I lived I'd
probably come around more, mostly for the coffee and its
caffeine and probably on the weekends as well where I would most
need it. Usually I just work on my projects at home over the
weekends..." ... Oh... Good... Tell her that you stay at home
most weekends, he was sure she would love to hear how
interesting he is when he just read or studied something for
fun... Most tended to fall asleep when he went on about those
hobbies...
Mana glanced out the window after that, feeling a little silly
before noticing the tame squabbling of the nobles outside. He
hoped things wouldn't escalate between them to any kind of
extremes, such as a raised voice or maybe even, gasp, a shove or
two after which somepony may just produce a glove to slap
somepony else with. Then Mana would have to go outside and
listen to them both try to convince him that he should throw one
of them in the dungeons because they "insulted their honor" or
some other equally weak and lame thing only a noble would think
was an actual crime.
"U-uh, you ever hear of the Stake House?" He tagged on to what
he'd said about weekends, mostly to try and make himself sound
less boring than he'd convinced himself he had, "I tend to go
there a lot too. It's a restaurant that's a popular guard hang
out. Has game tables, good plentiful food, warm atmosphere..."
... Ugh... He should probably be asking about her right? Those
are the kinds of questions that ponies ask when out together
like this, aren't they? Mana took another sip of his coffee,
then took a bite out of his doughnut as he tried to figure out a
good question to ask, mind struggling to piece something
together. Thing is, he wanted to ask about her, but he wasn't
well versed in what was normal to ask about... "Um... So... Tell
me about... yourself...?" Pretty vague. Pretty weak. Mana
resisted the urge to simply facehoof and apologize right then as
he just took a longer sip of his drink.

When Mana removed his helmet, Ryo noticed the big purple gem
attached to it. Mana had mentioned a gemstone related experiment
earlier, maybe she could ask him about it... Her eyes followed
the floating piece of armor for a moment before returning to
Mana when he continued their conversation. "Whenever it's
available, yes. It holds memories to me." She took a sip of her
drink, finishing her first doughnut. "I don't need caffeine in
my life just yet." She chuckled, realizing shortly after that
she may have just called Mana old.
Ryo's smile grew when Mana began to tell her about his
experiments, but it disappeared when Mana abruptly stopped
talking about them and instead turned to look outside from the
window. She looked outside too, spotting the two nobles from
before, still arguing.
"S-stake house?" Ryo asked a bit surprised. Isn't it that guard
hive she had passed many times before. "Yeah... I know the
place... I've never actually visited it, but i have passed it
many times..." She had a hard time imaging the place having a
warm atmosphere. Ryo could imagine all the pointing and jokes
she would hear if she went there, but before she could think
about it any further, Mana asked another question.
"About... Myself?" Wow... that's pretty vague question. What
should she tell him? Only the important things of course. But
what's been important in her life, what is important enough
about herself that she should tell him about. Instead of
actually providing an answer, Ryo asked "Well... What do you
want to know?"

Didn't need caffeine in her life yet? What did that mean? He
drank coffee... So did that mean she thought he needed the
caffeine? Granted, after a long day of work, and keeping Thunder
reigned in, he tended to be exhausted and used a cup of coffee
to bring himself back to an operational level of energy for his
personal work at home, but he didn't necessary need coffee to
survive... at least he didn't think he did... Did he? Mana took
another, albeit smaller, sip of his drink as his eyes fell to
the table, his cup then being levitate down and a little further
away from him as he had been before, as though he was trying to
distance himself from it for the moment.
At how she reacted to the mention of the Stake House Mana
blinked a little, looking back up at her before wincing
internally and again nearly facehoofing. Ah. That's right. Shed
mentioned shed had some trouble with guards in the past and he'd
just talked about a place where such ponies gathered daily...
'Good one, Mana,' he thought to himself, taking another bite of
his doughnut before being asked to elaborate on his earlier weak
attempt at conversation. "U-uh-um... Well... What kinds of...
Uh... Stuff... Interests you...?" Mana almost cringed, him
deciding to stuff his mouth with another larger bite of his
doughnut to avoid saying anything else, the guard now wondering
just how long it would take for him to cause the mare across
from him to simply thank him for her food then excuse herself
from his sad attempt to get to know her.
Despite how he'd acted towards him earlier, Mana now was wishing
so very dearly that his partner was around to pester him with
some form of jokes or disguised advice on what to say or do
here. It was so much easier for Thunder in these situations,
Mana never understanding just how he could stay so relaxed and
casual during this kind of stuff. Just about finished with his
doughnut, Mana let his eyes fall to the bear claw in the box,
them lingering as he lowered his head slightly and felt his ears
pin back a little. He'd made her giggle when he'd brought the
doughnuts over... he wished he could figure out how to go back
to that...

Oh no... She said something bad. Ryo looked Mana place his drink
further away, While he himself stared at the table. He seemed to
brighten up a bit when he presented her a new question, but he
still stammered alot. "Why is he so nervous? Maybe i'm doing
something wrong." She thought before answering. "My interests...
Well i think i could say blacksmith's work, but then again i'm
looking for something different to do, so maybe no. I do love to
transmute gemstones. Taking small pieces away and replacing them
with... others... And..."
Ryo bit her lip. She had no idea what she had done wrong, Mana
seemed to be getting despondent. "A-are you... Okay? You don't
look too good."

The pinning of Mana's ears ceased at the mention of the mare's
interest in the transmutation of gemstones, his interest being
grabbed hold of as his earlier behavior lightened, the unicorn
raising his head back up to make eye contact and listen closely
to what she was saying. She didn't say much though, her trailing
off rather quickly as she instead went on to ask him directly if
he was okay. Mana finished the final bite of his doughnut before
heaving a small sigh, "It's that painfully obvious, huh?" He
asked back, tone taking a small dip. Well... he'd might as well
be honest about it...
"To tell the truth... no, not really. I-it's nothing you've
done, of course," he quickly added, fearing what he'd said may
translate into him having some kind of problem with her, "its
just... Well... I'm just not used to doing this kind of thing...
At all, actually... I'm sorry if I'm making this awkward for
you..." Mana's dyed face came in handy again as it hid a slight
shade of red brought on by his embarrassment from the admission
to not often going out with mare's to this kind of thing. "Um...
What was that you were saying about transmutation of gemstones?"
He attempted to lighten things up, the guard not really
expecting to recover from how he'd probably made this weird for
Ryo but still being genuinely interested in what she was talking
about.

"Oh, don't worry. You're not." That's strange. Ryo thought they
had gotten over the "awkward" phase. And what does he mean with
"this kind of thing"? They're just eating together. There's no
candles or anything else "romantic" here... Unless... Thunder
had lied to her and candles are not necessary for this kind of
thing to be a date. Now she did it herself, she called it "this
kind of thing". What if this "this kind of thing" is actually a
date... A date... Ryo blinked few times before saying "It's a
date..." with barely audible voice. She hoped that she hadn't
broken any dating laws so far. Hopefully there isn't such things
as dating laws...
Her nervousness was slowly, but surely coming back. Thankfully
Mana wanted to change the subject of their conversation. "I...
I-i was saying... I mean... What i was saying was..." Ryo was
grinning nervously. "What i'm trying to say... I-is that..." No.
she can't think clearly before she could empty her head from all
these questions.
"I-is this a d-date? If it i-is, am i doing something wrong? I
know you said that i haven't done anything wrong, but, but
Thunder said that dates require candles, but there isn't any.
should there be candles? I'm not even sure what being on a date
means. I've never been on a date before" Ryo's outburst drew few
glares from other ponies sitting on the nearby tables. While
asking all these questions eased her mind, Ryo wasn't sure if
this was the right place to ask them, but what's done is done.
She hoped that Mana wouldn't get angry to her, hoped that she
hadn't messed up anything.
