Just Another Night Off
By: Ivory Star Date: February 2, 2014, 7:45 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ivory Star yawned lethargically as she rolled over in her bed,
glancing sleepily at the brightly glowing clock... 10:00 pm...
The numbers glared at her as she sighed, tossing the covers
aside and sat up to stretch out her limbs and wings. With
another yawn, Ivory stood up and walked lazily to her window,
throwing the curtains back to set her eyes upon a half-visible
moon. The Noctral sighed deeply, leaving the curtains open as
she turned around to make her bed under the guidance of moon's
silvery light. Even on her days off, Ivory could never seem to
sleep in longer than just a couple of hours. Which was fine, she
guessed... If only she could actually get into the habit of
waking up on time without being so groggy. Pulling the last
corners of her bedsheets in place, Ivory inspected her room one
final time before departing downstairs to the living room.
The Noctral had no problem seeing around in the dark as she
proceeded to open the curtains around the room, eventually
picking up a book on top of a nearby shelf before placing it
down softly on the couch. There wasn't really much to do after
nightfall in Ponyville, so Ivory had started to read again. She
circles around, fixing to sit down... But first... Perhaps
something to eat. With a bit more spring to her step, Ivory
trotted into the kitchen and began to dig through the pantry,
pulling out various bags of cereal, chips, and nuts before
mixing it all up in one big bowl. Returning to the living room,
Ivory sprawled herself out on the couch, placing her bowl on the
floor before cracking open her book and started to read.

Gee, it's been kinda long for a thank-you, but better late than
never, right? The Noctral had probably already forgotten about
him by now, but she'd get her thanks anyway for letting him stay
that first day...night? Couple days, one night? Whatever, it
was when his sleeping schedule was out of whack and he was a
little fuzzy on the details. Whatever it had been, though, he
owed her big for taking him in for a bit after the...incident
with his house, and though this wouldn't be nearly good enough
it was a start.
After all, who doesn't like brownies? Nopony he's ever met,
that's for sure, and Snow had even helped him consume a practice
batch, which had come out kind of gooey since he'd added a bit
too much milk, but still good. Chocolate with chocolate chips.
That's a winning combination. He certainly hopes she'll like
them as he lands lightly at her front step, plate of brownies in
tow. There's a doorbell, but he doesn't ring it, thinking that
a custom knock is more personal and fun. 3 firm knocks, then a
rapid 4, soft and then rising in volume.
He stands there for a few seconds before thinking Hm, should I
stay to give it to her or leave it on her doorstep? Is she
home? Why didn't I think about this earlier? He begins
lowering the plate to the ground, then picks it back up. Down
and up. Down and back up. Oh well, she'd probably see him if
he left now anyway, so he'll just stay and let her answer. He
can always just leave after anyway if he needs to.

The Noctral yawned again, flipping a page in her book with one
hoof while stuffing her face with the other, her soft golden
eyes scanning the words as she moved down along the next page.
The novel was something that her father had recommended; an
adventurous tale spun around two warriors fighting for the love
of a mare... While Ivory wasn't really one to sit down and read
anything, the book was actually quite enjoying, much to her
surprise. The mare couldn't help but envision herself in the
world, not as a helpless princess, but a fellow warrior willing
to do battle to protect her country. Then again, she only wished
she was that brave. But that's what an imagination was for,
right? Ivory smiled to herself, reading further along... And
then there was a knock at the door.
Ivory paused to glance up at the door, a questioning look
creeping into her features as she bookmarked the page. Who in
Equestria would want to visit her this late at night? With a
quick stretch, the Noctral hopped off the couch and approached
the front door, opening it slightly to peek outside. The first
thing she saw was a plate of delightful brownies, but then her
gaze locked on the familiar face behind it. "Schwambart?" she
asked, a hint of excitement in her voice as she opened the door
all the way. It wasn't very often she got any visitors outside
the delivery pony. "Good evening!~ Or night, if you would
prefer. What brings you to this part of town?" Ivory took a
couple steps back, moving over to the side slightly as she waved
him in.

"Schwambart, actua-" the pony in question begins correcting
before he stops himself, realizing that she had said his name
right. "Hey, you got it right!" He's just gotten so used to
needing to correct ponies on first introductions lately, though
to be fair to Patches and Snow one got a sleepy introduction and
the other was probably just accent. "Night and evening is fine,
I'd say. Two for the price of one, even if it's free to begin
with. Anyway!" He whips the brownies up, nearly tossing one
from the plate. "It's been about a week since you and Mrs.
Zephyr found me and helped me out, so I figured it's high time
to properly show my appreciation. I considered a
guitar-accompanied serenade, but I don't think Mr. Zephyr would
appreciate it much and you probably have better ears for music
than the kind of playing I can do on a guitar," he jokes, a
light blush coming to his cheeks. Wow, he can't believe he just
said that. "Also I don't have a guitar, and it's hard to sing
while playing a violin."
Hm. She's waving him in. Or it looks like it anyway. What to
do...he hadn't been planning on staying, but he didn't really
have anything else to do tonight either, his latest commission
sitting completed on his desk, and now the lazy time between
work when he'd check all his advertisements and make sure
they're still current and such.
...Maybe if she asks him in. "And what's almost as good as
music? Chocolate, that's what. You're looking at chocolate
pudding blended with chocolate cake batter, chocolate chips
baked in. And if that's not enough chocolate I want to know
what would be."

Ivory blinked and stared at the light green pony for a few
seconds, a somewhat surprised look on her face before suddenly
giggling to herself. "How about music and chocolate? Or a song
about chocolate? Then it would be double-good!~ Please, come
in!~ If you have the time, that is." Smiling, the Noctral waved
him in again. "I may not have a particular ear for music, but I
can dance and sing pretty well... At least I would think that I
can..." She shrugged, still grinning as she did a little
half-twirl when she spoke. "They smell heavenly, by the way...
Chocolate chocolate with chocolate chips? Now that's sweet.~"
Ivory was a bit surprised at Schwambart's sudden appearance, but
just the thought of having company over made her excited, even
if it was just for a little bit.

Schwambart laughs. "Now you're speaking my language.
♪♫ Can you feeel the chocolate tonight...It is where
we are...♫♪" he sings out, grinning. "Name of my
next album...you know, if I ever...release an album..." Along
with other hit songs like "The Ice Cream in Your Soul". Well,
there's confirmation. He's welcome inside. "Yeah, I have some
time I can spend here. I hope you have good rates, some places
I have to shell out 3 hours for half an hour's worth of...uh...I
don't know, what do you buy with time? Oh, transportation,
since trains run on it." He steps inside with the plate of
brownies, almost reflexively closing the door behind him, except
that she's the hostess and holding it open, so that might not
work out so well.
"Where would you like the brownies? Aside from your stomach of
course, it might take a bit of time for them to get there, and
they need to be somewhere in the meantime." He walks farther
into the house. "Coffee table? Kitchen? Dining room?
Conservatory? Lounge? Study?" he asks, listing off rooms from
a popular murder mystery game.

"The coffee table would be fine, Schwambart," Ivory replied,
wearing a goofy grin stretched from ear to ear. "We could both
sit and relax for a little bit. Did you have to walk far?" The
Noctral proceeded to close the door as Schwambart stepped inside
before leading him to the living room straight ahead. Although,
he probably didn't need much guidance considering he had stayed
there for a hoof-full of days and the living room was in plain
sight, anyways... Ivory spryly hopped about the room, picking
things up here and there to return them to its proper place and
cleaned off the couch. "I apologize for the mess... I wasn't
really expecting company tonight, but I'm certainly glad you
stopped by.~" With a mild sigh of relaxation, Ivory moved her
book and makeshift bowl of snacks off to the side before waving
Schwambart to come join her.
"About that album of yours..." Ivory grinned, laying back some
as she relaxed more. "Will it be payable by chocolate donuts and
eclairs? And don't worry about 'rates'. You know you you're
always welcome here." The Noctral giggled to herself as she
tried to spin her own little jokes... And failing horribly at
it. She had missed Schwambart's humor and ability to crack
random jokes; it had always made her day a bit more lively, and
sometimes quite unexpected if she wasn't prepared for it. "How
have you been? I haven't heard much from ya since you found a
place to settle down in."

Schwambart relaxes at her grin, the fact that he could inspire
that from her making him more comfortable, which he really
needed since he's never really been that comfortable about going
into other ponies' homes. "Not far at all, considering these
beauties," he says, flapping his wings once, careful not to
disturb anything with the wind, "but it wasn't very far anyway."
Of course, for him he could go somewhere on the other side of
Ponyville entirely and he'd still say it "wasn't very far". His
sense of scale comes from growing up in a fairly large city, and
that's something his new home isn't.
He just has to laugh, he really does, when she apologizes for
the mess. "Ivory, don't go calling this place a mess. You
don't know what a mess is if you think this is one. You should
see my old house. Er...shouldn't, actually." It's probably
still plenty messy. "If keeping a messy house was an Equestria
Games event, we'd be disqualified in the 3rd round because of
performance-enhancing substances. Or something."
"That's the ONLY way you'll be able to buy it. That's going to
be the world currency by the time I release that album," he
says, putting the brownies down on the table before setting
himself down on the seat, unwrapping his bag from around his
shoulders and placing it next to him. "That or herbs and
spices, 'cause, you know...thyme is money..."
He let's a small laugh escape his throat at that. It's his
favorite one, and he always likes to use it on new audiences.
"I've been doing pretty good. Still haven't managed to get my
sleep schedule figured out, as you may have guessed by me
showing up tonight. Been spending my time working, singing, and
goofiing off. You?"

"World currency, huh?" Ivory teased while reaching for a
brownie, inspecting it a little before taking a bite. "Then that
would make SugarCube Corner a world bank. Do you know how many
donuts and eclairs they make a day?" She paused for a moment,
smiling warmly as she took a second bite and nearly devoured the
whole square at once. "These are sooooooooo amazing.~ Comparable
to the Cakes themselves, or if I may be so bold, my mother
herself... I seriously might buy a dozen donuts and eclairs just
to trade with you next time." The Noctral already had a second
one in her hoof by the time she was done speaking, crossing her
hind hooves to adjust to a more comfortable position.
Ivory glanced over at Schwmabart, that ever present, warm smile
still plastered on her face. "It's good to hear that you're
doing well. When I first moved here, it was a miracle for me to
get off the ground. I had saved up enough bits from my previous
job in Manehatten to buy this house, but it looked nothing like
it does now... It was neglected and worn down, practically
falling apart. Before I had the time and the bits to fix it up,
I was generously known as 'the scary vampire near the edge of
town'... With a alternative words being creepy, crazy or
unnatural..." A hint of sarcasm flowed through her otherwise
melodious voice, her bright golden eyes growing a shade dimmer
as she revisited some rather troubling memories. "I scared
everypony, I guess. Like I was the boogymare or something. Then
again, I doubt most ponies here have seen a Noctral before, much
less a Half-Noctral like me."
The mare shrugged, glowing a bit brighter as she brushed her
hair out of her face before picking up a third brownie. "I had
to work two jobs to fix this house up, and in that time some
ponies were starting to warm up to me. While most are now
accustomed to my presence, I still get those... looks... But
enough about that. I've just been enjoying these couple nights
off and trying to get some of my choreography in order. It'll be
a full moon soon.~" Ivory giggled, apparently very excited as
she chomped the third brownie whole.

"Yeah, I've heard about that place," Schwambart says in response
to the comment about SugarCube Corner. "Haven't been there yet,
but if it's anywhere near as good as I hear it is then it might
as well be a bank with how much of my money I'd spend there.
You know, if I had much extra money to be throwing around.
Which I don't. Which is why I've kept myself from going so as
to not get myself caught in their sweet delicious trap." He
chuckles and stuffs a hoof in one of his jacket pockets. It
jangles.
"Really? I never would have guessed. You've done a marvelous
job with the place then, I'd like to say. How long have you
been here?" he asks, then furrows his brow. "...Or did you say
already? Oh well. I sure wouldn't mind hearing it again, in
your voice." His expression sours when she talks about her
treatment by the other ponies, not particularly impressed with
them. "Yeah, look or act a little different and suddenly you're
not worth their time. Or your worth their time as a punching
bag. Buncha-"
He cuts himself off as he realizes he's beginning a complanatory
monologue. Not something he planned on doing when he came over
to say thanks. He realizes that his spare hoof is gripping his
bag quite tightly and relaxes it, forcing his smile back onto
his face until it becomes natural again.
"Choreography, huh? For what?" He settles deeper in his seat,
shifting for extra comfort. "And what does it have to do with
the full moon?"
