At The Pool
By: Dais Clash Date: January 29, 2014, 9:54 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Dais strolled lazily down the wide gravel path that connected
Ponyville to a nearby pool Dais had heard was perfect for
swimming. The day was hot, and Dais had just come from a very
long stint in his non-air-conditioned office to finish off a
large amount of important paperwork. As Dais walked, happy to be
outdoors, he kept a doughnut levitated beside him and munched on
it occasionally.
The only thing that could have made the moment any more perfect
for Dais would have been if he was simultaneously arguing with
somepony. Since other ponies didn't like his arguments too much,
though, he supposed it was the best he could ask for.
As Dais climbed to the top of the final hill on his way, he let
out a long breath of both awe and relief. The water looked calm
and inviting. Nowhere in Manehatten even compared. The ponies
who'd told him about this place were right - it really was
perfect for swimming. Or at least it would probably be better
than that spa every pony kept telling him was so good. One day
he would try it, but spas weren't typically Dais' kind of thing.
Eating the remainder of the doughnut with a large gulp, Dais
charged down the hill and towards the glistening pristine water,
almost the same color as his coat. He swung all the way up on a
nearby tire swing, but didn't jump off at the top. Sadly, Dais
swung all the way back down again, quickly summoning a beach
chair for the tire to catapult him on to instead.
With a sigh, Dais lit up his horn and caused another stack of
paperwork to materialize. "Suppose I'd better go through all
this too before I get myself wet" he lamented quietly to
himself, ears drooped. Dais seriously hoped that nothing would
slow him down too much or require his attention, because he
really did want to get some time in the water, but he had
promised Mayor Mare he'd get the rest of the paperwork done if
he was allowed to leave his workplace early. With a huff, Dais
got to work.

Calm whistling preceded the arrival of a contented looking grey
donkey, a colourful towel slung over his shoulders, as he
trotted towards the clean pool of cool, refreshing water,
exactly the thing for a donkey who'd just finished work for the
day.
Spotting another visitor to the pool, slumped on a beach chair
with a hoof-full of paperwork and a bored looking frown, Curtis
raised an eyebrow before shooting the blue stallion a wave, and
friendly call of greeting.
"Afternoon. Odd spot to do paperwork." The donkey commented,
voice friendly, an easy smile on his face as he moved past Dais,
laying his towel down near the water's edge, as he began to
stretch a little, readying himself for a dive.

Dais huffed again, ears still drooped. "Sure beats the office"
he replied in the most bored possible voice, before lazily
offering a hoof "I'm Dais Clash, special assistant to the mayor
of Ponyville. I might just join you soon, but I've just got to
get this all done first. And uhh - do forgive me, I'm still
quite new to town, but who are you?"

His smile widening at the offer of a hoof in greeting, Curtis
walked over and extended his own, grasping Dais', and shaking it
firmly, as he spoke, voice friendly.
"I'm sure it does. I'm Curtis, woodworker, and occasional
maintenance guy. Nice to meet you, Dais." The grey donkey
explained as he concluded the hoofshake and then stepped back a
little, eying the paperwork that Dais held.
"So, the Mayor lumped you with some extra work, then? That's
kinda rough. Want me to let you get on with it in peace?" Curtis
offered, as he walked back towards the pool, speaking to the
blue stallion over his shoulder.

"I don't mind the extra work, I love a challenge" said Dais,
ears shooting up "But I remember you now! You're one of the few
citizen's who actually filled out this new tax declaration
correctly. I remember auditing that, thinking how I'd love to
know more about carpentry. I've been trying to make a chair for
some time now but I just can't get T-joints figured out, you
know? You'll have to show me sometime. It's one of my hobbies,
you see. Among others. Anyway, I wouldn't want to intrude on
your fun - I'm almost done anyway. Just got a few more consent
applications to read and process here. You probably won't slow
me down too much if you aren't being too loud."

Chuckling and grinning happily, Curtis listened over his
shoulder, long ears perked up in interest as the blue stallion
spoke, a faintly proud look on his face, at Dais' mention of his
success with the taxation system.
"Oh, really? Well, I'll be sure to give you a few pointers on
it, sometime soon. For now though, I'm gonna take a dip,
although I'll try my best to keep it quiet." The donkey
responded, turning his head to reply and shoot Dais an easy
grin, before he turned back to the water, and hopped in with a
small splash, quickly diving down towards the bottom,
luxuriating in the cool, still waters.

Dais couldn't say that he'd made good time, but he did make a
sincere effort. A good half hour passed before he was able to
put away the last of the forms, leap off his chair and with a
theatrical wave, cause both his paperwork and the chair to
disappear. Wasting no time, Dais rushed over to the tire swing
and launched himself as far as he could, hoping that there
weren't any objects just beneath the surface for him to hurt
himself on.
"Look out below!" called Dais as he was flung through the air,
hooves flailing wildly, as he suddenly remembered Curtis was
probably still there.
Not even a second passed before the pool erupted into a large
cannonball splash.
Dais was not a great swimmer, but he could paddle well enough,
and after some seconds his head emerged at the surface. He took
in a deep breath, eyes closed, before shaking his mane
vigorously to get the water out.
"Now that was awesome" said Dais happily, before calling out
"Hey Curtis, are you alright?"

Although half an hour had passed while Dais worked, Curtis was
still swimming, and at the moment that Dais made his spectacular
cannonball, he was at the pool's bottom, swimming around with a
contented smile on his face.
He looked up in surprise as Dais splashed into the pool and
narrowly missed him, his surprise turning quickly to a smile, as
he floated up to the surface, re-emerging a little way away from
the blue stallion, a small grin on his features.
"Right here, Dais. I'm fine. Good to see you finished all that
paperwork, seemed like there was a lot to deal with." Curtis
commented, as he brushed his messy brown mane out of his eyes,
treading water to keep himself afloat.

Dais spun his head towards Curtis, slinging water from his mane
across the pool. "Yeah, there always is" he called, head bobbing
from his awkward paddling motion "I'm sure the mayor changes up
all the standards and requirements every year or so just to keep
us on our hooves. Hey - you swim pretty well for a donkey. No
offence, I mean. I can't swim much myself."

Curtis chuckled a little in response to Dais' words, his smile
widening a little at the blue stallion's compliment of his
swimming abilities, prompting him to reply, voice calm and
friendly, hooves still slowly treading water.
"Thanks. I guess you just get better at it over time, I usually
go swimming a couple of times a week. It's relaxing, and if you
push yourself, makes pretty good exercise." Curtis commented,
with a smile, slowly beginning to swim a few laps back and forth
across the pool, as he spoke.
