       Verochka
She was staring down at her homework like it was a pile of goo,
wishing it would burst into flame and go away, when one of the
other exchange students from Europe, Lilith, came over and
       greeted her.
"Hello, Verochka," Lilith said, "May I sit with you?" Then she
caught sight of the homework Vera hadn't put away yet, and she
seemed to regret asking. "Oh, you look like you're busy..."
Vera shook her head, but couldn't say anything, having taken a
large gulp of her cooling drink. She definitely was NOT busy, at
least not too busy to talk to Lilith.
"Are you having difficulty with the homework?" Lilith queried,
shifting her weight to other foot, still standing. "I know I had
a horrid time adjusting to the Academy's curriculum. I always
heard Americans have a bad education system, but the Academy
isn't fooling around. I feel like I'm constantly being
       interrogated."
Finally Vera swallowed. "No, I'm not busy, sit down. I was just
putting it away for later. It's not so much that it's difficult,
at least not so bad, I'm just so tired these days..." She almost
had to stifle a yawn. "Although not all of it is easy, I'll
admit that. But that's better than a crappy education, I guess."
She gathered all the homework papers and put them in one pile,
then stuffed them in the bag she had brought them in. The one
dress design she still had left to finish she left on the table,
hoping that staring at it would bring her an epiphany that would
solve the problems she was having with it. Of course, that she
had one left to design left out the fact that she still had
about half of them to finish sewing... But she knew that Lilith
would like to hear about the fashion show. They were both into
fashion, although they differed in taste.
"Would you like to hear about my latest project?" She asked
after a second, then glanced around to make sure Chevy wasn't
anywhere nearby. The last thing she wanted to do was ruin the
       surprise.

"Are you having difficulty with the homework?" Lilith queried,
shifting her weight to other foot, still standing. "I know I had

later. It's not so much that it's difficult, at least not so
bad, I'm just so tired these days..." Lilith could understand
that. She sat down, cautious not to disturb any of the paper on
the table. "Although not all of it is easy, I'll admit that. But
that's better than a crappy education, I guess."
“I suppose,” Lilith allowed, her tone non-committal. As Verochka
gathered the majority of her papers and stuffed them away, a
neglected dress design caught Lilith's eye. She picked it up,
inspecting it for a moment while Verochka cleared away the rest
       of her mess.
“If you don't mind my saying,” Lilith ventured, “I think you
need something along that waistline. Unless you've got a goddess
body wearing your dress to make it impressive-looking, I think
that psuedo-empire waist is going to come off as too simple.
Maybe a sash or a change in material would spice it up.” She set
the pattern back down at the table, feeling it safe to assume
her suggestions would go unheeded, as usual. “But what do I
know?” She shrugged. She didn't know Verochka enough to know how
she took criticism, and she was sure they had very different
perspectives on fashion in general. But Lilith didn't care, as
long as Verochka could defend her own choices in some way, at
       least.
"Would you like to hear about my latest project?" Verochka
queried. Lilith gave a shrug, wondering at the way the girl
glanced around, like she was sharing some big secret. What, are
you taking part in some huge fashion show and you can't tell
anybody? I didn't think so. Chill out, no one here gives two
       shits about fashion.

"Although not all of it is easy, I'll admit that. But that's
better than a crappy education, I guess." She gathered up most
of her papers and stuffed them away.
“I suppose,” Lilith said, almost grudgingly. Then she picked up
the dress design Vera had left on the table and looked at it for
       a moment.
“If you don't mind my saying,” Lilith ventured, “I think you
need something along that waistline. Unless you've got a goddess
body wearing your dress to make it impressive-looking, I think
that psuedo-empire waist is going to come off as too simple.
Maybe a sash or a change in material would spice it up. But what
do I know?” She shrugged, as if she thought her advice was
       useless.
Verochka almost stared at her, then back at the design, trying
to envision what Lilith had suggested. She might be right... it
just has to be the right color... She pulled out a pencil and
scribbled a note to herself for later. "That might actually
       work, Lilith... Thank you."
"Would you like to hear about my latest project?" she asked
after jotting down her note. Then she reflexively looked around
for Chevy. Phoenix would kill her if she let it slip. Lilith
shrugged, maybe thinking she was a little weird for having
checked the area like she was paranoid. Well, I sort of am, she
thought. Probably not for the reasons she thinks I am, though...
"Well, basically, Phoenix asked me to make Chevy a new wardrobe.
And he also asked that it be a surprise. I didn't exactly
realize how much work it was going to be.... It is part of the
reason I have been so tired--spending hours on dresses, then on
schoolwork... and getting up early..." She sighed, rubbing her
eyes again. "I should take a night off, but that is nearly
impossible if I want to make them all in time..." She trailed
off. "Not that I don't have help, but even with it...." She
grimaced. Serina was driving her nuts, cheery as she was. Mostly
because she wouldn't shut up--just incessant chatter. But Vera
couldn't afford to lose the help, so she gritted her teeth and
dealt. It wore her down, though, and only took away a few more
precious minutes of sleep each night.
But she was finally nearly done with the design stage, and could
focus more attention on the making dresses stage. It was at
least a comfort to know she wouldn't have to deal with any more
       theoretical stuff for a while.

       from the red-head.
But instead, Verochka gave the sketch a very hard look. Then she
took a pencil and made a quickly scrawled note. "That might
       actually work, Lilith... Thank you."
Lilith's eyes widened a little, but fortunately Verochka was
still distracted and didn't see. The placid acceptance felt
strange, somehow, and altogether unexpected. But Lilith was not
       about to question the compliment.
"Would you like to hear about my latest project?" she asked, her
eyes darting around as if preparing to share in some secret.
Lilith gave a shrug, genuinely ambivalent to the offer. "Well,

"Ah..." Lilith gave a slow, understanding nod. "You have one of
those helpers?" She paused to take a sip, considering for a
moment. On one hand, she had heard through the - very unreliable
       - grapevine that Verochka could be a little hot-headed or
strange. On the other, having a project to work on might be
nice, even if it was tiring. Lilith enjoyed busywork, of most
sorts. It was much easier than dull silence and empty hours.
"I've done some seamstress work before, if you need an extra
pair of hands. I do both the designs as well as actual sewing,
and I'm happier staying out from underfoot." She gave another
shrug, not meeting Verochka's eyes as she sipped at her coffee,
glancing out the window. She was expecting a text, and
contemplated whether or not she should dig her cell phone out of
       her purse to check.

It was the last thing she'd expected to hear from Lilith. She

       "Really? You'd do that?"

"Ah..." Lilith gave a slow, understanding nod. "You have one of
those helpers?" She paused to take a sip, pondering. Vera said
nothing, as if waiting for Lilith to continue. "I've done some
seamstress work before, if you need an extra pair of hands. I do
both the designs as well as actual sewing, and I'm happier
staying out from underfoot." She gave another shrug, not meeting
Verochka's eyes as she sipped at her coffee.
       "Really? You'd do that?"
Lilith happened to glance up and see the genuine surprise on
Verochka's face. One finely shaped eyebrow arched, and she gave
another shrug. "Sure, why not? I've got some skills and you need
help." She reached into her bag, looking for a pack of
cigarettes. None. It was times like these she really missed
Europe. She would kill for a smoke right about now. Instead she
had to suffice with coffee. "Besides," she sighed, "I'm not a
big fan of boredom. It's like a horrid ghost that likes to haunt
me, so I'm in a constant battle against it. Perhaps your little
project to stave it off for awhile, who knows? It's worth a
       shot, though, right?"
She finally relented, pulling her cell phone out and checking
it. Ah, finally, he'd texted her.
'after 5 i am free. so, yes. how is work?'
Lilith smiled, ignoring Verochka for a moment to send a quick
reply of, 'thats fine. work is hell but with coffee. been
wondering why murder is still illegal today. thnx for asking <3'
"So, anyways," she re-entered the current conversation with that
vague smile still on her painted lips. "How is the boyfriend?
Last I heard you can't shut up about each other."

"Really? You'd do that?" She was genuinely surprised at Lilith's
offer, but she seemed serious about it, glancing back up at her
       and arching an eyebrow.
"Sure, why not? I've got some skills and you need help." Lilith
reached into her bag, looking for something in the depths of her
bag. "Besides," she sighed, "I'm not a big fan of boredom. It's
like a horrid ghost that likes to haunt me, so I'm in a constant
battle against it. Perhaps your little project to stave it off
for awhile, who knows? It's worth a shot, though, right?"
Lilith's attention was diverted to her cell for a few minutes,
during which Vera pondered Lilith's offer. Maybe it would be a
good idea, at least to keep herself from going postal on
Serina... Her mind wandered down the path of her project again,
until a yawn interrupted her thoughts. Lilith was finished with
       her text anyway.
"So, anyways," Lilith started with a vague smile still on her
painted lips. "How is the boyfriend? Last I heard you can't shut
       up about each other."
"Ummm... well..." she looked down at the table, her already
tired smile fading. "Not so great. We had a bad fight when he
visited, and... I tried to fix things. I do not how well it
worked." She slid her hand unobtrusively into the inside pocket
of the light jacket that was draped over her shoulders and
checked to make sure Sebastian's chain was still there. He'd
once again left it in her possession, and she'd only realized it
after she was on the shuttle to the airport and he was long gone
at work. She'd taken to carrying it around with her.
She sighed, and knew that she was tired enough to cry if she
stayed on the topic of Sebastian for too much longer. "I just
hope the damage is reparable... I cannot wait until finals, to
be honest. I need to go home." She gave a small little sigh,
knowing there wasn't much she could do about anything until then
       anyway.
"But enough about me... you going with anyone?" She nodded to
the cell, taking another sip of her hot chocolate.

"So, anyways," Lilith started with a vague smile still on her
painted lips. "How is the boyfriend? Last I heard you can't shut
       up about each other."
"Ummm... well..." she looked down at the table, her already
tired smile fading. Lilith considered that Verochka had not been
exaggerating at all, when she had claimed to be so worn out. She
needs help. Not that I'm super concerned or anything...but
still. She took another sip, considering Verochka's situation.
It probably didn't help, if her relationship was on the rocks at
the same time as a big project. Lilith knew this from personal
experience. If she was anything like Lilith, she would use the
stress and deadlines like a tool to escape the painful activity
of thinking. "Not so great. We had a bad fight when he visited,
and... I tried to fix things. I do not how well it worked."
Verochka released a sigh, as if the weight on her shoulders was
a physical entity, begging to be let down for even just a
       moment.
"It's always hard to say, isn't it?" she commented, a little
distracted, but her lips pursed in a small expression of
       sympathy.
"I just hope the damage is reparable... I cannot wait until
finals, to be honest. I need to go home." Another sigh from
Verochka, this one significantly lessened from the previous one.
Lilith herself gave a nod of understanding. She wished she could
home for awhile after finals, but it just wasn't meant to be.
She raised her plastic cup as if to toast, saying, "Here's to
       hoping. Seriously."
"But enough about me... you going with anyone?" She nodded to
the cell, taking another sip of her hot chocolate.
"Mmmm..." A pursing of Lilith's lips, as she considered what to
reveal and what to keep quiet about. There was certainly nothing
to be ashamed about, as far as that went, but she still didn't
know if Verochka was just being polite or nosy, or if she
genuinely wanted to know. "There is a possible boy on the roster
that has stood out a little against the rest. We're still in the
'tester bottle' stage, though." Another sip of her coffee, now
tasting stale and starting to become more lukewarm than
anything, then added, "He's a little on the short side, but
pretty and built like a tight rubber band. Plays guitar. Not a
druggie, at least as far as I'm aware. Actually seems to listen
when a girl speaks, as opposed to just staring at her." The
image of Trent's cocky smile flashed across her mind's eye, and
she added, "And doesn't like to taunt a girl just to get a rise.
So overall, things look okay. But I'm a cynic to the end." A
soft smile returned to Lilith's expression at that, and she
turned back to Verochka, "So. Americans, right? They're
everywhere. I'm glad to know someone from Across The Water, at
       the very least."

"Ummm... well..." she looked down at the table, her already
tired smile fading. They had at last reached Sebastian. "Not so
great. We had a bad fight when he visited, and... I tried to fix
things. I do not how well it worked." She sighed and reached
unobtrusively to check that Sebastian's chain was still in the
inside pocket. She just wanted to fix things between them.
"It's always hard to say, isn't it?" Lilith commented, her lips
pursed in a small expression of sympathy. Vera smiled--at least
Lilith and Natalie cared, even just a little. It was a nice balm
against the wintry feeling of loneliness that now crept up on
her if she let her guard down.
"I just hope the damage is reparable... I cannot wait until
finals, to be honest. I need to go home." Another sigh from
Verochka, this one significantly lessened from the previous
one--just an impatient burst of air.
Lilith herself gave a nod of understanding, then raised her
glass. "Here's to hoping. Seriously." Vera raised her cup and
knocked it against Lilith's, but she didn't say anything much
for a moment, taking a sip.
"But enough about me... you going with anyone?" She nodded to
the cell, taking yet another sip of her hot chocolate. It was
       starting to get too cold.
"Mmmm..." A pursing of Lilith's lips, and Verochka's curiosity
increased, her eyebrows raising a little bit.
"There is a possible boy on the roster that has stood out a
little against the rest. We're still in the 'tester bottle'
stage, though." Vera's lips curved into a small smile, even
slightly unwillingly. Lilith was probably smitten and just
       unwilling to give in--typical Lilith.
Another sip of her coffee, then Lilith added "He's a little on
the short side, but pretty and built like a tight rubber band.
Plays guitar. Not a druggie, at least as far as I'm aware.
Actually seems to listen when a girl speaks, as opposed to just
staring at her." Something else suddenly occurred to her, and
she added, "And doesn't like to taunt a girl just to get a rise.
So overall, things look okay. But I'm a cynic to the end."
Vera would have laughed if she'd been any less tired. As it was,
her smile broadened and she said, "Well, good for you, at
least." She was glad to hear that a fellow non-American was
       doing well.
A soft smile returned to Lilith's expression and she turned back
to Verochka, "So. Americans, right? They're everywhere. I'm glad
to know someone from Across The Water, at the very least."
"Me also. Americans!" She waved her hand, as if she was batting
something gross out of the air. "Most of them can't cook, most
of them don't read, and half of them... well, their politicians
aren't that bad, I guess. But they get away with crap that
wouldn't last at home." she said. "Or so I'd hoped, anyway."
Her nose wrinkled at the thought of what her parents did. What
they did, they did their best at, to actually improve the living
conditions and wages of their people and such, but she'd
overheard enough conversations at night to know they still did
not sleep well. And she knew personally that sometimes it was
like living in a nightmare when it was one of your parents that
was responsible for someone having to declare bankruptcy...
She'd lost a lot of friends over the years due to changes in
policy that her father got the blame for in their area. It
wasn't easy to be a politicians kid.
"Although they do have half-decent fashion sense."

Verocha's smile widened, and she quietly responded with, "Well,
       good for you, at least."
Lilith just smiled softly, her expression fading as she became
more aware of Verochka's eyes on her during the ensuing bit of
silence. She needed to change the subject. "So. Americans,
right? They're everywhere. I'm glad to know someone from Across
The Water, at the very least."
"Me also. Americans!" She waved her hand, as if 'Americans'
equaled a dozen flies buzzing around her face and she was trying
to swat them away. "Most of them can't cook, most of them don't
read, and half of them... well, their politicians aren't that
bad, I guess. But they get away with crap that wouldn't last at
home." she said. "Or so I'd hoped, anyway."
"True," she finished off the last of her coffee. She paused a
moment, and then just as she said, "And they have horrible
fashion sense", at the same moment Verochka commented "Although
they do have half-decent fashion sense."
Lilith paused for a moment, her expression surprised that they
had spoken at the same time. Then, she let out a laugh, long and
hard, "Haha..do you really think so? I've been trying to ignore
all the tube tops and Uggs I've been seeing everywhere I go. One
of these days, I may go into a mall and vomit from overdose."
