Okay, so there went almost seven dollars down the drain-- or
rather, onto some preppy chick's pretty white dress. Who wears
that crap to a regular old coffee shop, anyway? she thought,
pouting at the remains of food that had fallen across... well..
everything. "Ugh.... sorry," she muttered automatically, but
just as she started to reach down to start cleaning, a chilling,
icy liquid suddenly soaked her head, neck, shoulders, back....
It sent shivers down her spine, but the realization hit fast:
Princess Prep had done it. She'd actually pulled the stupidest,
most cliched "cool girl" elitist move ever: pouring a drink on
some random person's head that she didn't deem worthy enough.
Hadn't this girl ever heard of gravity?!
Everything seemed to happen in an instant. The man talking to
her previously put his fist in front of his mouth, other hand
clutching his side as he stood and backed away, wide-eyed.
Silence fell over the room. Seemingly every head was turned
towards the two girls. A couple that had walked into the shop
just moments before sensed the awkwardness and wordlessly left-
probably to another establishment. And a voice from behind the
counter of the shop called out her name in warning, but it was
too late.
Erin's narrowed eyes met Princess Prep's, who apparently it was
some show of force to crush a paper cup and toss it to the
floor. “This dress cost more than your life.”
Princess Prep's voice was a hiss, a threat.... but Erin
couldn't-- wouldn't-- keep it in like that. The words came out
like a trumpet-- loud and in-your-face-clear: "No-- Just my
lungs are worth more than your stupid dress!" She tugged on her
sopping hair, getting her fingers heavy with the cold drink,
then flicked the droplets back at her. It didn't feel good
enough at all, so Erin lunged forward to shove Princess Prep
backwards with the heels of her palms. It was a pretty forceful
shove, fueled by a wet, shivering, and indignant Erin. "You have
no right to do that to me!" she shouted, knowing her voice was
far, far too loud-- enhanced lungs and anger amplifying her
voice more than people nearby probably appreciated. Despite the
cold of the drink, Erin felt the heat radiating on her neck and
even in her hands. "You think you're some princess that can just
attack someone for a human mistake?! Well, surprise, that don't
fly here, so you best get back on your high horse and trot back
off to your kingdom of creeps, because that is not going to work
here!"

"No-- Just my lungs are worth more than your stupid dress!" the
girl blurted out in a volume that only slightly surprised Jess.
True, she had never heard someone so obnoxiously loud but at the
same time if there was one thing she was used to, it was people
yelling at her. It seemed to happen a lot more often ever since
she had moved to go to school here. Everyone was a lot more
sensible in New York. Everyone kept to themselves and half of
the drama that she encountered at school would have never
happened there.
It didn’t take a genius to put two and two together, especially
since Jessica had seen this girl on school grounds before. “So
you’re Enhancement is to be a loud mouth? If the doctor’s
mission was to make you sound like a toad with a megaphone- he
succeeded.” She scoffed a little, crossing her arms over her
chest. The girl tugged on her soaked hair, as if that would
somehow magically get the coffee out. It was doing the same
amount of good that it would do Jess if she tried the same thing
with her dress. Jessica arched an eyebrow as the other girl
flicked droplets at her as if she would melt at the contact of
liquid on her skin. Quickly, though, the girl lunged at her and
Jess stepped back fast enough to where she only felt a little
push from the girl’s hands, causing her to brace herself by
taking yet another step backwards.
"You have no right to do that to me!" she shouted and Jessica’s
ears rang softly but she shrugged, not bothered completely by
the toad’s excessive yammering. "You think you're some princess
that can just attack someone for a human mistake?! Well,
surprise, that don't fly here, so you best get back on your high
horse and trot back off to your kingdom of creeps, because that
is not going to work here!"
“Clever, did you come up with that line all on your own, or did
you need some help before now and had to wait until the proper
time to use it? Really, it’s very cute but if your only talent
is to blurt words at high volumes, you better hop along to
whatever swamp you came from, toad… because that is not going to
work here.” Then Jessica did something that halfway surprised
herself. She brought up both hands in front of her and lit the
fires on both of her wrists. “Put your hands on me again, I dare
you.” She hissed and everything about Jess conveyed that she was
NOT messing around on this one. She would be d***ed if she would
let anyone touch her without her permission. She would not
hesitate to burn the girl, if she felt the need arise.

"You have no right to do that to me!" It only took a fraction of
a second for Erin to feel the heat rise on her neck, to know her
ears had to be bright red with her anger towards this elitist,
pretentious princess. Her hands clenched repeatedly at her side,
the compulsion to slap her or something barely under the
surface. "You think you're some princess that can just attack
someone for a human mistake?! Well, surprise, that don't fly
here, so you best get back on your high horse and trot back off
to your kingdom of creeps, because that is not going to work

whatever swamp you came from, toad… because that is not going to
work here.” She was even so pretentious to think she could use
stupid elementary insults and get away with it! And she thought
she was so much better than Erin?!
The princess lifted her hands to Erin's eye level. Immediately,
Erin registered the threat, even before the real threat came
out. the sudden burst of heat from the princess's hands was the
only bit that caught Erin by surprise.... she knew she'd show
her something threatening. But the heat still made her jump a
little bit, the light, too. But the threat only made her more
angry. “Put your hands on me again, I dare you.”
That was the straw that broke the camel's back. She knew it was
stupid, she knew she'd get hurt, she could feel the heat and see
the flames.... but.... The elitism and arrogance were too much.
Fire or no fire, there was no one on the entire planet who had
the right to treat people the way she was doing, and someone had
to show her she couldn't just flip out her built-in lighter and
get her perfect-princess way! Erin glared at her through the
flames, feeling a low rumble within her before jumping forward,
arms outstretched and locked. She felt her hands smash into the
princess, though it was hard to tell if she hit her shoulders or
her stomach or what. Erin was too busy lashing out, shifting to
use her elbows as her own version of built-in weapons. Let the
fire come.... you need to learn that that won't stop me!

Jessica’s eyes widened when despite the fact that the girl had
two intense flames pointed STRAIGHT for her, she still lunged.
Shock made Jess pause momentarily, her arms locked in place in
front of her. Normally she would have put out the flames and
fought fairly, but she just wasn’t quick enough this time. All
she could manage to do was reinforce her footing just seconds
before the impact of the other girls arms so that even when the
other girl’s hands hit her ribcage, she just staggered back a
little.
She wasn’t stupid- she knew there were probably going to be
bruises, but she just didn’t care. All of the pent up anger she
had with her family, moving, and all of the bad things that
seemed to happen to her just amplified her emotions. Normally,
she would work out for hours just to get rid of all of the mess
in her mind, but lately she hadn’t been able to due to photo
shoots and meetings. Then one good thing happened- she was
finally calm and flirting with some guy she would probably never
see again, and then this girl came out of nowhere and threw food
on her dress and started a fight. More pure fury filled her
eyes… that is until she smelled the distinct smell of burning
hair and looked up to see that the other girl’s hair was lit up.
It must have happened when she lunged, she must have gotten to
close. Either way, there was a choice to be made. Jessica could
choose to let the girl burn as a warning to never mess with her
again… or she could help her out and not have a guilty
conscious. True, Jess hated the girl but she didn’t want to see
her lose all of her hair- or worse- burn her scalp over
something as stupid as spilled food. She knew what being burned
was like, and she wouldn’t wish that on someone just because of
a ruined outfit.
“S***!” She yelled, grabbing the girl’s arm and pulling her
towards her own body. She knew the girl would probably thrash,
hit, claw, whatever…but at least she wouldn’t be responsible for
her burning.
It was a split-second decision- and probably a stupid one at
that- that Jess reacted in the only way she knew how. Smother
the fire.
Since she didn’t have any damp towels at hand, she instinctively
hugged the girl to her chest, feeling the heat of the fire on
her arms. Moving her arms around anywhere she felt heat, Jess
had the fire put out in seconds. Silently, she cursed herself
out in words that would have made her mother faint. She would
never admit it, but she knew that this was all her fault.
When she was sure that the flames were put out, she let the girl
go, half-heartedly pushing her away from her body. Little minor
burns were up her arm- not enough to harm the technology in them
but enough to sting. Jessica felt exhausted, all of the energy
that had been built up crashed around her and she suddenly felt
ancient. Her shoulders sagged for a moment as she braced her
hand on the table next to her.
“I’m not going to say sorry.” She said after a moment of
silence. Looking the other girl’s outfit up and down a moment,
she added, “I’ll pay for dry-cleaning or whatever, if you want.
If not, don’t throw a fit about it just say no.” Straightening
her back, Jess ran her long fingers through her short hair.

She wasn't sure how it happened, or when, but Erin felt the heat
on her. Really, actually on her. In the midst of her lashing
out, of jabbing with her elbows and shoving with her hands and
screaming, she felt it. It took a while to register through the
adrenaline and anger, but it was definitely there. And then she
smelled it, and Erin froze. Oh, no.... no, no, no, no...
Frozen, completely lost as to what to do and terrified that she
was about to experience a real-life nightmare, Erin suddenly
felt herself being shoved about. Only she was being shoved
toward someone, toward the princess who started this whole mess.
A very uncomfortable and somewhat scary moment passed, and then
she shoved Erin away.
But Erin could smell the burn in her hair, and she felt the
dread in her heart swell up, putting the anger out almost
entirely. Fingers trembling, she reached up to feel the damage
that had been done. When she pulled her hand away, a chuck of
dark, burned, smelly hair lay in her hand. Despite herself, Erin
couldn't keep her eyes from going blurry at the sight... "My...
my hair...." she muttered dumbly. In her mind's eye, Erin saw a
half-bald version of herself, a mistreated and abused Barbie
doll some toddler "styled" and then rejected.
“I’m not going to say sorry.” The other girl's words barely
registered with Erin, but when they did, she just shook her head
a little, afraid too much movement might make more fall off.
“I’ll pay for dry-cleaning or whatever, if you want. If not,
don’t throw a fit about it just say no.”
"No," she replied flatly, still staring somewhat shocked at the
clump in her hand. "I don't care about the clothes... but... my
hair..." Unable to resist avoiding it any longer, Erin ran off
to the bathroom and forced herself to look in the mirror.
Thankfully, she didn't look like a rejected Barbie doll. But
Erin could see the burnt hair, and it was all the ends of her
long strands of hair. She felt her heart sink, letting herself
cry over it privately before going back outside. She knew she'd
have to cut it, probably to her shoulders... Sure, it would grow
back, but... it didn't make it any easier to deal with.
After giving herself time to cry, Erin cleaned up her face as
best she could. Still reeking of burnt hair, she walked back out
into the main part of the store, the pulsing ache in her head
reminding her she'd have to eventually come back and apologize
and hope to God they'd still let Veritas play music here.
But right now, she just couldn't manage it.
Forlornly, Erin's eyes found that girl again. Anything she said
would be used against her, surely. She waited a bit, hoping to
hear something... anything that might count as an apology or
something. At least she could leave knowing there was some kind
of conscience in her.

The girl was obviously heartbroken over her ruined hair, and
Jessica really couldn’t blame her. She knew exactly how it felt
to work for seemingly ages to get long hair that looked just
right and have it burn up in your face- literally. Guilt ticked
in the back of her mind, and she was extremely thankful when the
girl rushed off to the bathroom. Fixing her messy hair a moment,
Jess moved over to the counter where a guy stood still. She
wasn’t sure if he was infuriated or just plain shocked at what
had just happened in front of him.
She apologized repeatedly, mentioning how she would never come
to the establishment again and how she would pay for any
damages- though she didn’t see any. Saying she was sorry to him
was a heck of a lot easier than saying it to the girl who
spilled food on her dress AND physically attacked her. Jessica
knew that if they took it to court, there was a high chance the
other girl would lose. The girl was the one who spilled food on
her first and tried to physically harm her more than once. The
fire was self-defense, more like a shield. Plus, Jessica made
sure that the girl was a safe distance from the fire, she
couldn’t have stopped the girl from throwing herself into it. If
all of that wasn’t enough, Jess would obviously have one of the
best lawyers- one who could insure that she would win. Money
helped everything.
Jess could feel the girl’s eyes on her before she saw her.
Turning around, she stepped towards her. It was obvious that she
had been crying in the bathroom, and the guilt tick became a
pounding in her mind. “You’re stupid for jumping into fire like
that.” She said, meeting the girl’s eyes. It was difficult to
look at her, but Jessica managed. It was partially her fault,
after all. The least she could do was look at the damage that
had been done. “I’ll pay for the cut.” She muttered, gesturing
to the girl’s head. It wasn’t much, but it was all her tired
mind could come up with. “And I’ll owe you a favor of some
sort.”
Wordlessly, she dug into her purse and ripped a page from the
memo pad she carried and a pen. She wrote her name and number
down before handing it to the girl. A thought popped into her
head and she grabbed the paper back, writing the name of her
favorite salon before giving it back. “Look into them, if you
want. They do good work.” In her own way, this was Jessica
apologizing for her part in her hair getting fried. It wasn’t as
good as an outward ‘sorry,’ but her pride wouldn’t let her speak
the words.

“You’re stupid for jumping into fire like that,” were the
girl's first words. Erin chewed nervously on the inside of her
cheek before flatly admitting, "I know." I know I'm stupid for
doing it. I know I'm stupid for getting angry so easily. I know
I'm stupid for rising to a threat. I know.
“I’ll pay for the cut,” she muttered, making Erin suddenly
sharply aware that the damage wasn't just obvious to her. The
entire shop was now seeing her like this. She was sure her face
was red, to match her red eyes. “And I’ll owe you a favor of
some sort.”
Words failed her for the moment as Erin watched the girl
scribble stuff onto a notepad. She offered it to Erin, who was
just about to take it before the girl jerked it back again. Her
hand dropped limply to her side, and the feeling of resentment
started to rise, slowly pushing out the sensation of shock. The
girl handed back the paper, and Erin nodded. "All right."
“Look into them, if you want. They do good work.”
Erin glanced down at the paper and read it. It had the girl's
name -- Jessica -- and a number and then a salon name. Erin
hadn't been to a proper salon in forever, it seemed. She'd
taught herself lots of ways to style and color and take care of
her own hair, so spending lots of money on a salon was moot.
Even if her parents would shell out the money to do it. Even
now, everything was still tightly budgeted, thanks to the price
of Enhancements. "Um... I-- I will." A beat paused, and then she
managed, glancing up at Jessica, "I didn't mean to do that...
the spill. I can't pay for dry cleaning, though." The words were
uttered quietly, seemingly emotionlessly. I just wanted to buy a
sandwich....

The girl looked down at the paper Jessica had given her, still
looking a lot like a wounded animal. "Um... I-- I will." There
was a moment of complete silence between the two of them before
the other girl spoke again. "I didn't mean to do that... the
spill. I can't pay for dry cleaning, though." Frowning, Jess
glanced down at the damage that was done to her dress and
shrugged, looking up again.
“Don’t worry about it.” She knew the girl probably wouldn’t have
been able to pay from the get-go. That was part of the reason
she had gotten so angry. It was a brand new dress that the girl
had damaged and she wouldn’t have covered the cost to get it
fixed, so the cleaning would come out of Jessica’s own pocket
when she had already messed up a ton of her other clothes
because of her Enhancement. It was all very frustrating for her.
But all the frustration she felt turned into exhaustion in a
matter of seconds.
“Just call me if you need anything, 'kay?” she said before
turning and leaving the coffee shop, headed straight for her car
and praying for once that no one would notice her. It had to
have been the worst walk of shame she had ever done.
I think it’s all done here, yeah? Jess has left the Coffee Shop

When she finally sat down with her hot chocolate, she spent a
few moments doing nothing. Working with Serina was trying, to
say the least. And while they had finished much more together
than Vera would have been able to finish solo, there was
something to be said for working alone. And that on top of
little sleep and having to spend hours with needles and thimbles
and thread, her back hurt and her neck was continually cramped
up.
And her homework load seemed to have doubled in the meantime,
contributing to her lack of sleep as she stayed up later and
later attempting to finish it all to keep her parents and
friends from asking for the reasons behind her dropping grades.
It was a vicious circle and it was wearing her out.
"Idiot... shouldn't have taken on so many....." She rubbed her
face for a second, trying to wake up a little bit more. She had
taken the day off from the dresses; she didn't have enough
energy to sew, even knowing every second counted.
Looking at the assignment in front of her, she gave up on it and
just tried to enjoy her drink. It was a bit hot still, so she
just sipped.

Extra shifts had the added bonus of time and a half pay, of
course. But they still dragged on forever. Lilith was grateful
for her ten minute break, and determined to use it to her
advantage. Taking her complimentary employee coffee, she went to
sit down when she spotted a familiar head of reddish hair, her
path veering slowly off. Verochka also went to the Academy, and
she was also a transfer student, so Lilith somehow felt a little
more connected with her than the others. In addition, Verochka
was into fashion, as was Lilith. Even if they disagreed on the
quality of certain trends or materials, etc., Lilith felt like
the appreciation was the thing that mattered.
"Hello, Verochka," Lilith greeted, "May I sit with you?" Her
eyes fell to the table, covered in homework, and her lips
pursed, regretting the request. "Oh, you look like you're
busy..."
"Are you having difficulty with the homework?" she queried,
shifting her weight to other foot, a note of understanding in
her voice. "I know I had a horrid time adjusting to the
Academy's curriculum. I always heard Americans have a bad
education system, but the Academy isn't fooling around. I feel
like I'm constantly being interrogated."
