Re: Zinnia's house

Zinnia Natter
"Well, if you're so curious, Reese... He's seriously just a
friend. I don't know what made him take me in, but I would swear
until I'm blue in the face he has no other intentions. But
anyway... He's a professional fencer, he fences and gives
lessons in his spare time, and is on the National team the rest
of the time. I think he was going to the Games the last time,
but he said there was a family emergency that he had to deal
with so he bowed out." She shrugged. "I don't think he was
really looking forwards to competing in the Games, though,
because he hasn't gone back to tryouts. I don't know why but I
haven't asked. His flatmate said something about a girl breaking
his heart once, so I wasn't going to press the issue."
"Hmm... sometimes, though, having something to occupy yourself
with after a breakup is the best thing to distract you." He gave
a little shrug of his own, lifting one shoulder and frowning a
little. "But it sucks that he couldn't compete that year.."
Zinnia shrugged. She really didn't know the particulars of his
last encounter, and wasn't about to inquire. It was his
business. "As for how he treats me... well, he took me in when
all I'd done is stare him down for a few minutes. He's given me
a place to stay, that is tucked away from most prying eyes... He
usually doesn't stay there himself, but lets me have my own
space. Basically the only rule is to not lock the doors during
the day and not shoot the stray cat that sometimes comes by."
She laughed a little, remembering her first encounter with the
stray.
"So, wait. You 'stared him down' and he took you into his house?
What, do you have a super power I don't know about?" Zinnia
laughed.
"No, no, what I mean was that I was zoning out, and he walked in
front of me and for whatever reason my eyes followed him, and he
caught me staring." She blushed a little bit, remembering that
particular encounter. "He still had to convince me he wasn't the
big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood." And she had fled to
the forests, because Karl had gone and surprised her enough that
her gun had flipped out and was trained on him for a good three
seconds. He'd welcomed her in, though, when she finally came
back.
She paused, thinking about more things she could use to describe
him. "He's a private person, and respects my space, and he's
fairly easy-going. Likes hot-chocolate." She shrugged, placing a
piece of pie on a plate for Reese, and then herself. He let out
a little whooping sound, swooping in and starting in on the pie.
"Oh. And his name is Paradox."
He almost choked on his pie. "Wait, what? I've never heard of
that name before..." he thought for a moment. "Although, I guess
I'm the last person to talk, right?"
Zinnia shrugged. "Anything else you're concerned about?"
Reese considered, taking a couple more bites of pie. "Mmm..he
sounds like a great guy, I've gotta say. So...is he like an
older brother to you or something?" he asked the question with a
bit of a wrinkle to his nose, as though he doubted that were the
case. He took another bite of pie, leaning up against her
counter and sending her a smile. "And if he talks about you the
way you talk about him, then I'd say he has an inkling of how
lucky he is."
"What do you mean, 'the way I talk about him'?" She had no idea
why people kept insinuating that her and Dox had something other
than a platonic relationship, other than the fact that he was a
guy and she was a girl. But it wasn't like they ever spent time
alone... Karl was always there, in the background, being grumpy.
Or maybe there WAS something that she wasn't seeing that was
staring her in the face, waiting to be noticed.

Zinnia shrugged. "Anything else you're concerned about?"
Reese considered, taking a couple more bites of pie. "Mmm..he
sounds like a great guy, I've gotta say. So...is he like an
older brother to you or something?" he asked the question with a
bit of a wrinkle to his nose, the trace of playfulness still
there. "And if he talks about you the way you talk about him,
then I'd say he has an inkling of how lucky he is."
"What do you mean, 'the way I talk about him'?"
She sounded surprised, but a little defensive, too. Reese smiled
knowingly, scraping out more of his pie off the plate. "Well,
you have gone running off to France at the drop of a hat. It's
not every day you have a friend that important to you, that you
race out of the country not once, but multiple times. Not to
mention, you make him food, and you don't like talking about him
too much to anyone else. It's almost like you're trying to
protect him, or even keep him to yourself." He leaned back
against the counter and rested his elbows on it, tilting his
head back to glance up at the ceiling. "People do that with
people they care about a lot." He smirked, adding, "And you're
always going on about how nice he is, how kind he's been to you,
how he's hardworking, a good person. If he's realized half of
the good qualities you have, then he has an idea of how lucky
he's been to meet you." Reese looked over at her, his smile
softened. "It's not something you come across every day, you
know. What you and 'Dox' have. Heck, maybe there's not a word
for it yet. Maybe there is. Who am I to say? I'm just an
innocent bystander."

his head back to look at the ceiling. "People do that with
people they care about a lot."
He wasn't looking at her, so he didn't see the slight blush come
to her face. He didn't seem to be done, though, so while she
looked down at her second slice of pie, he went on, a slight
smirk present in his voice.
"And you're always going on about how nice he is, how kind he's
been to you, how he's hardworking, a good person. If he's
realized half of the good qualities you have, then he has an
idea of how lucky he's been to meet you."
What good qualities? she thought, her blush fading into
embarrassment now. She could sometimes cook, and while she was a
quick learner, that really only applied to the classroom. She
opened her mouth to protest, but he still wasn't done, so she
closed her mouth and listened again.
Reese looked over at her, his smile softening a little. "It's
not something you come across every day, you know. What you and
'Dox' have. Heck, maybe there's not a word for it yet. Maybe
there is. Who am I to say? I'm just an innocent bystander."
She shrugged, then said, "Well, I haven't said anything about
him that isn't true. He does work hard. And he took me in off
the streets. People can't be nicer than that." She paused,
trying to order her thoughts. "And even if I felt anything
beyond gratefulness for him, what right would I have to act on
it? If it ended badly, or if he did not return the feelings,
what then?" I would probably lose the one place I have been
accepted, she thought. I wouldn't have anywhere that I feel
comfortable in my own skin...
"And as for racing off to France..." She shook her head
slightly. "I owe him my life, Reese... At the very least, my
sanity. Are you saying that you wouldn't spend time with or help
out someone like that?" She knew she was dodging the point of
his inquiries, but she knew that what she felt for Paradox was
gratefulness.
But a slight color had come back into her cheeks. And although
she couldn't explain it, she couldn't help but think that just
maybe, there might be something... but at the moment, she
wouldn't have been able to say exactly what.

Reese Middleton
He sent her a knowing look. Reese was used to people being a
little dense to their own feelings. It was understandable -
feelings were weird, convoluted things. It wasn't like a book
she could read or a recipe she could follow. Feelings were more
like mixing a little of everything and hoping it came out as
something edible. But he could tell that his words were striking
a chord somewhere in Zinnia, making her re-think some things.
"It's not something you come across every day, you know. What
you and 'Dox' have. Heck, maybe there's not a word for it yet.
Maybe there is. Who am I to say? I'm just an innocent

he merely gave a lukewarm nod of agreement. "And even if I felt
anything beyond gratefulness for him, what right would I have to
act on it? If it ended badly, or if he did not return the
feelings, what then?"
"Well, isn't that the risk you take? You're human, just like
everyone else, Zinnia. We make mistakes, we say stupid things,
we learn from it." It was his turn to shrug, finishing off his
pie in one final scoop. Around the remnants of the treat, he
added, "Better than always wondering, I say."
"And as for racing off to France..." She shook her head
slightly. "I owe him my life, Reese... At the very least, my
sanity. Are you saying that you wouldn't spend time with or help
out someone like that?"
"I'm saying that of course I would," he said with a smirk. "But
because that's what I do for people I care about." He took the
plate, holding it aloft for a second with a pointed look before
placing it in the sink. "I spend time with them, try to help
them out. Because the way I see it, we all 'save' each other, in
our own way."
He leaned forward, giving her a friendly peck on the cheek, a
kiss riddled with the sweetness of pie. "Thanks for sharing the
pie with me, Z. I'll see you at school, alright?"

"I don't want to ruin one of the only places I feel comfortable

Zinnia sighed quietly. She knew she should spend less time holed
up and more time with her friends from school, but... it was
still hard. She didn't say anything, though, and he continued,
unruffled.
He leaned forward, giving her a friendly peck on the cheek.
"Thanks for sharing the pie with me, Z. I'll see you at school,
alright?"
She blushed, entirely unprepared for even the quick peck on the
cheek. "Y... yeah, see you at school..." She stuttered a little
bit, very surprised. She knew Reese was sweet, but she hadn't
quite been prepared for the peck on the cheek.
When the door shut behind him, she was still pink.
This interaction has finished
