Verochka
There was yet another tap on the door, this one a calm, firm
knock. She was reminded of Zinnia's, although Zinnia had seemed
extremely introverted, and definitely sad, though her knock was
not. And very adamant that she would NOT be showing off her
right arm or shoulder, thank you very much, even though she
couldn't seem to tell Vera why other than it was because of her
Enhancement.
Which she still hadn't explained to Vera other than to say she
was a human weapon. There were no obvious signs of it, at least
that Vera could tell after a long day of numbers and people. But
combined with missing her lunch and being unable to snack as so
many people just wanted to chat, Verochka's temper had wasted
away until she was about to lose it. Hopefully this girl
wouldn't be too much trouble.
She trudged to the door to open it, to tired at this point to
put anything on her feet, and opened the door.
"Hi, my name is Verochka, yes, I make dresses, no, unless you're
with the Academy you can't have one for free, and no, I will not
change my mind on the design even if you hold me at gunpoint."
She paused, realized how rude she'd sounded, and apologized
immediately.
"Sorry, I've had a long, long day. And I didn't expect so many
people to be involved. What's your name?"
She ushered the girl inside.
"And what's your Enhancement?"

Serina Todd
It was off to this Verochka Mandasky's to get measured for a
free dress.
The part about going to a place that some stranger had chosen
for them to meet bothered Serina at first, but she had been told
that this Mandasky girl was alright.
And so Serina came to the door of the chosen meeting place to
be measured for a new dress.
A free dress. That helped, if she was going to do something for
Phoenix and Chevy, that was all fine and great. But getting a
nice, custom-fit, FREE dress certainly was a helpful incentive.
Serina knocked calmly, but firmly, on the door to make herself
clearly heard. She really didn't like waiting outside doors
awkwardly, it just didn't suit her.
Miss Mandasky came to the door.
"Hi, my name is Verochka, yes, I make dresses, no, unless your
with the Academy you can't have one for free, and no, I will not
change my mind on the design even if you hold my at gun point."
Verochka paused for a minute and Serina stood there, hands on
hips, one eyebrow raised and a "Excuse me?" about to pass her
lips.
It made it. "Excuse me?" Serina said, clearly displeased from
her tone, expression, and stance.
"Sorry, I've had a long, long, day. And I didn't expect so many
people to be involved." Verochka said.
Having gotten her wanted apology, Serina decided to be
sympathetic. "Oh, I'm sorry. You've probably been working really
hard today, but, you've got to admit Missy," Serina said, with a
touch of humor on the last bit. "you were sort of asking for it
when you offered free work and products." she continued.
She then thought for a minute, then put on a decisive smile.
Then she walked in, gently nudging Verochka aside with her
shoulder, then Serina turned back to the seamstress.
"Alright, so, I figure I should help out since it is for some of
my friends. And quite frankly, Miss Mandasky, an over-worked
woman isn't generally a happy one."
Serina looked aimlessly around the room, and said. "I can use a
sewing machine a little, and when given instructions a good deal
of other things." she smiled at Verochka. "So, what can I do to
help things move along quickly?"

Verochka paused for a minute.
A girl stood there, hands on hips, one eyebrow raised. The look
brought Vera up short just long enough for the look to come to
words.
"Excuse me?" she said, clearly displeased from her tone,
expression, and stance.
"Sorry, I've had a long, long, day. And I didn't expect so many

This girl has the nerve to-
"Alright, so, I figure I should help out since it is for some of

woman isn't generally a happy one." The girl further interrupted
her thoughts, although she did have a point.
The girl looked around the room, then said. "I can use a sewing

other things." she smiled at Verochka. "So, what can I do to
help things move along quickly?"
Verochka finally found her voice.
"Ok, first, I don't even know your name. Second, stop, stop
stop. Just because you're good with a sewing machine, does not
mean you can waltz in here and think I am going to accept that
help! Yes, I am stressed out. You are not helping." She was
losing it, slipping into the basic English she'd learned first,
no contractions. Next would probably be Russian, so she took a
moment to take a deep breath. And three more. It had been a
long, long, LONG day.
"So why are you even here? Or are you that one chick on
Phoenix's list he told me about who has glow in the dark skin?"
Vera walked over to the light switches and turned them off. True
enough, the girl was glowing a faint green. She flipped the
light back on.
"Ah, nice. So you are... Serene, was it?" Her measuring tape was
in her hands. "Don't move while I take your measurements,
please. Unless I tell you to."

Serina Todd
"Excuse me?" Serina said indignantly.
"Sorry, I've had a long, long, day. And I didn't expect so many
people to be involved." Verochka said.
Deciding to be sympathetic for the time being, seeing as this
Mandasky girl was being a bit more polite by Serina's standards.
"Oh, I'm sorry. You've probably been working really hard today,
but, you've got to admit, Missy, you were sort of asking for it
when you offered free work and products."
Serina then walked inside, gently shoving Miss Mandasky aside.
"Alright," Serina said. "so, I figure I should help out since it
is for some of my friends. And quite frankly, Miss Mandasky, an
over-worked woman isn't generally a happy one."
Serina peeked around the nice apartment. "I can use a sewing
machine a little, and when given instructions a good deal of
other things." Serina smiled kindly at Verochka. "So, what can I
do to help things move along quickly?"
Verochka had seemed a little speechless after Serina walked in,
and Serina was about to ask what was wrong, when Verochka spoke
up.
"Ok, first, I don't even know your name. Second, stop, stop,
stop. Just because you're good with a sewing machine, does not
mean you can waltz in here and think I am going to accept that
help! Yes, I am stressed out. You are not helping."
Serina was within an inch of saying a few words that would be
beyond insulting and get across the fact that she would not be
treated this way by this...
Miss Mandasky took a few deep breaths.
"So why are you even here? Or are you that one chick on
Phoenix's list he told me about who has glow in the dark skin?"
Miss Mandasky walked over to the light switches and turned the
light off, and Serina saw and felt the soft green,
phosphorescent glow she gave off.
Serina noticed then that her hands were starting to clench into
fists. Testing her Enhancement was probably the worst thing this
Seamstress could have done, Serina was already on her last
straw.
"Ah, nice. So you are... Serene, was it?" Miss Mandasky had a
measuring tape in her hands and continued. "Don't move while I
take your measurements, please. Unless I tell you to."
That last comment was what really set off the flow of Serina.
"'Unless you tell me to!" She fumed. "'Accept that kind of
help'? Do you really think that I'm going to stand here and have
my help refused, my Enhancement toyed with, and still allow you
to take my measurements and make me a dress?"
"I am offering to help you out of consideration for both you and
my friends, and out of wanting to be nice to the stranger who
offered to make me a silk dress, but if you don't apologize for
using my Enhancement without permission and clean up your
atitude, then you will be have one less dress to make, Miss
Mandasky."

Verochka
She noticed after flicking the lights on and off to test the
Enhancement, that the girls' fists were clenched. A smile
flitted across her face. About damn time someone ELSE lost their
temper... she thought.
"Ah, nice. So you are... Serene, was it?" Verochka only
half-deliberately mis-pronounced the name, forgetting that
'serene' was an adjective, not the girl's name. "Don't move
while I take your measurements, please. Unless I tell you to."
That last comment really set the girl off " 'Unless you tell me
to'! " She fumed. "Accept that kind of help? Do you really think
that I'm going to stand here and have my help refused, my
Enhancement toyed with, and still allow you to take my
measurements and make me a dress?"
"Pretty much, yes. You want to participate in the show, you let
me take your measurements." Verochka backed up a little from the
girl, not wanting to be within flailing distance if it came to
blows.
"I am offering to help you out of consideration for both you and
my friends, and out of wanting to be nice to the stranger who
offered to make me a silk dress, but if you don't apologize for
using my Enhancement without permission and clean up your
attitude, then you will be have one less dress to make, Miss
Mandasky."
"Then perhaps, Miss Serene, you should have thought about the
manner in which you offered it, given that I did not actually
ask for it. Also, you waltzed into my apartment like you own it,
without letting me even introduce myself, or giving me your
name. I have every right to be offended. And I am, if it was not
clear before." She stood there, tapping her foot, measuring tape
in one hand, a frown on her face.
"And if you really want to help me, I need to know how good you
are prior to accepting. That is how I work. I'd rather be
stressed out because of a lot of work than stressed out because
my assistant keeps screwing things up. I am sure you understand
THAT, at least."
"Also, for the record, I do not recall any single person save
for Phoenix actually asking if it was ok to use MY Enhancement
prior to asking for a dress or suit. How did you THINK I was
getting enough silk for this? Buying it? Please. I would have to
charge every one of you, even a reduced fee, for that. I make
silk. That is my Enhancement, Miss Serene."
THAT should give her something to think about, Vera thought.
"So, if you do not mind, please do not get in the way as I take
your measurements--that is, if you still want a dress."
She stood there, waiting to hear what Serina had to say. She
would apologize later for her own acrid words.

"'Unless you tell me to'! " She fumed. "'Accept that kind of
help'? Do you really think that I'm going to stand here and have
my help refused, my Enhancement toyed with, and still allow you
to take my measurements and make me a dress?" Serina felt rage
surge through her nerves, alerting every part of her body and
tightening her stance. She stood, seething with rage.
"Pretty much, yes. You want to participate in the show, you let
me take your measurements." Miss Mandasky backed off a little,
and a good thing too, Serina was within an inch of actually
hitting her. But she still had a little bit of propriety and
strength left to stop herself and give this rude Seamstress a
chance to apologize. Which seemed to be all Serina could ask of
this woman and too much too. Because she seemed to think she
didn't need to.
"I am offering to help you out of consideration for both you and
my friends, and out of wanting to be nice to the stranger who
offered to make me a silk dress, but if you don't apologize for

"Then perhaps, Miss Serene, you should have thought about the

without letting me even introduce myself, or giving me your

clear before." Miss Mandasky stood there, tapping her foot and
still holding the measuring tape in her hand. It looked a little
comical, like someone in a physical comedy show would do to show
they're impatience to make the crowd laugh, but Serina was too
angry to laugh at this point. The little things had set her off,
her Enhancement especially. Sometimes it felt like she was
radiating her rage instead of solar power.
"And if you really want to help me, I need to know how good you
are prior to accepting. That is how I work. I'd rather be
stressed out because of a lot of work than stressed out because
my assistant keeps screwing things up. I am sure you understand

THINK I was getting enough silk for this? Buying it? Please. I
would have to charge every one of you, even a reduced fee, for
that. I make silk. That is my Enhancement, Miss Serene." Miss
Mandasky said as though Serina was some stupid kid off the
street who was bothering her, rather than someone who was almost
an adult and going to graduate highschool next year. "So, if you
do not mind, please do not get in the way as I take your
measurements--that is, if you still want a dress."
At that, Serina laughed. Loudly and directly in Miss Mandasky's
face. "'If you still want a dress' As if!" Serina said, no
longer laughing, but thoroughly coating her voice in sarcasm. "I
don't want you to take my measurements, and right now the last
thing on my wishlist is to stand her stupidly while you take my
measurements and all that! And for the record, I am smart enough
to figure things like your silk Enhancement out from the
implications. I can understand things you know!" Serina boiled
over, and reached up and slapped Verochka on the cheek. It
might have been over the top, but as she reached out she worked
hard to purposely not hit her too hard.
Serina twirled around and listened to the angry clicking of her
high heels for a second, hoping she hadn't messed anything up
for Phoenix or Chevy."And my name is SERINA, not serene! Get it
right, even with your weird accent that should be simple
enough!" Serina turned as she reached the door. "Come see me
when you decide to stop acting childish and accept my help, and
when your ready to believe that I wouldn't offer if I didn't
have confidence that I could do something." Then Serina slammed
the door and walked quickly home.
Serina has left Vera's residence

boiled over, and reached up and slapped Verochka on the cheek.
"сука!" The Russian insult came out of
her mouth, a gut reaction to the slap, even though it felt like
the girl had been holding back, something she had to give Kudos
to the girl for. Vera wouldn't have held anything back, had she
been slapping someone.
Then the girl swung around, and Vera watched the girl stomp
towards the door, her heels clicking angrily.
"And my name is SERINA, not serene! Get it right, even with your
weird accent that should be simple enough!"
"You know what, you're right, I apologize for entertaining
someone who is childish enough to think I would purposefully
screw up their name. You never corrected me on it, darling. And
stop insulting my accent before I actually lose my temper. It's
Russian, and I'm sure those are famed along side our accents."
She really was about to loose her temper. If the girl didn't
leave, Vera would probably do something they both really
regretted. "The door is behind you, honey, so I suggest you
utilize it and get OUT!"
Serina turned as she reached the door. "Come see me when you
decide to stop acting childish and accept my help, and when your
ready to believe that I wouldn't offer if I didn't have
confidence that I could do something." Then Serina slammed the
door behind her.
Vera stood, shocked at the audacity of the girl. How DARE she
presume! Though she would never admit it, the comment about her
accent made tears start rolling down her face. She'd been
speaking English for a while, but it never failed to show its
ugly face, and this time someone had been rude enough to comment
on it. She knew it wasn't perfect, but it still hurt to have
someone point it out.
Although the girl did have a point, she wasn't going to admit it
that night. Not while she was still this livid.
Measurements at Verochka's are finished
