Gerald Park
By: Mascii Date: May 6, 2013, 12:14 pm

Gerald park is a tiny little place between the school and the
library, about two blocks away from Sophie's Mart. There isn't
much there, and there are hardly any kids there except on the
weekends, but it has a quiet charm to it. There are several
benches on the outskirts of the park, and there is an old rusty
merry-go-round, and six swings. In addition, there are a
selection of jungle gyms, slides, and a sandbox nearby. The
grass is dry and brown, but at least it isn't overgrown.
At night, there are four streetlamps that illuminate the park.
Sometimes in the summer, the kids come just at dusk to catch
fireflies, searching for their mate and flashing occasionally,
making the children laugh and chase them even more.

It was only a couple days after their strange survey at the
school, and it was finally the day of his first date with Erin.
Although part of him was still sad by the trouble that had been
brewing between Yukito and Erin, he still couldn't deny that he
was excited to finally have his chance. He had tried to look his
best, but was careful to still dress pretty casual, just in
case. With a soft black leather jacket and a dark colored
button-up shirt, he walked side by side with Erin, smiling. His
brown messenger bag was stocked to the brim with treats that he
had packed for their lunch, and the bag bumped noisily against
the side of his jeans, the tupperware inside making a clatter.
The park they had decided upon for their first 'date' was kind
of drab-looking, but it was one of the only parks in town that
was available. Besides, it was only a short walk from Erin's
house, so he could make sure she got back in plenty of time
before her stingy curfew. Once they stepped onto the grass,
Reese glanced over at her, reaching over with a smile to take
her hand in his, giving it a gentle squeeze. "It seems a bit
Hollywood to have a picnic first date, doesn't it? It's cute..."
It had been Erin's request, without hesitation she had decided
upon a picnic in the park at sunset, and he had happily obliged
to the suggestion.
"Where would you like to sit and eat at?"

She hadn't been able to figure out if Reese really liked her, or
if he was just taking her on, like, a "test drive" to decide if
he liked her or not. Erin would have never guessed he liked her,
but then, that didn't mean it wasn't true. And Reese was
definitely a good catch. Part of her still felt like she should
hold out for a chance with Yukito, but... he kept saying they
weren't going to actually date. So it wasn't a bad thing to date
other guys then, right? She couldn't be expected to sequester
herself away in her room until he decided it was safe for her to
come out and change her online status to "in a relationship with
Yukito Maki-not-Ramsey." Right?
Today wasn't about that, though. It was about her and Reese, and
possibilites, and picnics in perfect weather. She'd even dressed
up to be cute, which she hadn't thought much of doing for Reese
before. It was just cool enough that a scarf and leggings
wouldn't be uncomfortable, and the red scarf added just a pop of
color. She always thought red looked particularly good on her.
Of course, she had to admit, Reese looked pretty good, too. Had
she not ever noticed that before?
Reese took her hand in his and gave it a gentle squeeze. The
simple action made her smile, and she looked up at him with a
bright expression. It was a nice, little simple act, but it was
one that stuck with her. "It seems a bit Hollywood to have a
picnic first date, doesn't it? It's cute..."
"Aw, but I don't wanna be Hollywood...." Erin retorted
playfully, making a face. "I just think movies are awful hard to
talk through, and everyone does the boring old dinner date, so
outside would be more fun!" Absently, Erin began to swing their
joint hands back and forth as the walked along the path.
"Where would you like to sit and eat at?"
Briefly, Erin looked around for a place to sit. She pointed with
her free hand to the concrete benches close to them. "There's
fine!" She hastened her pace, releasing his hand from hers as
she sat down, crossing one leg over the other at the knee and
sending Reese another smile. "What's on the menu, garçon?"
Unable to keep a straight face at the silly use of French, Erin
started giggling.

"Aw, but I don't wanna be Hollywood...." Her coy reply was
accompanied by an adorable face. Reese thought she looked
especially beautiful today. Red looked really good on her. And
so did that happy little look on her face. "I just think movies
are awful hard to talk through, and everyone does the boring old
dinner date, so outside would be more fun!"
"That's true. I think it was a good idea," he said amiably,
chuckling a little as she swung their joined hands back and
forth as they walked along. It was a silly little thing, wasn't
it? But it could lead to much bigger things, and Reese liked
that. It was always so comfortable with Erin. He didn't have to
worry so much. He could just relax, and enjoy. "Where would you
like to sit and eat at?"
It didn't take her long to spot out a set of cement benches, and
they sat down, her hand slipping from his. "What's on the menu,
garçon?" For some reason, Erin's attempts at French were
hilarious, and they both laughed at it.
"Weeeeell.."he said slowly, pulling his bag out and beginning to
retrieve the tupperware containers. "We have pumpkin pie,
because I know you love it. I also have a container of whipped
cream, and milk. We have fruit.." he held up a container of
sliced apples, oranges, and grapes, along with other various
fruits. "We have my mother's pasta salad, and we have barbecue
pork sandwiches." He smiled, holding up the largest of the
packages, the smell of the barbecue already wafting through. "I
have soda and water, as well." His bag had seriously been
super-heavy on the way over, even if it was just a small picnic
for two, and he was glad for the little foldable cooler package
to keep the food in. It was a life-saver. "Hungry, ma chérie?"

"Where would you like to sit and eat at?"
It didn't take her long to spot out a set of cement benches, and

at the extreme level of cheesiness.
"Weeeeell.." he said slowly, pulling his bag out and beginning

Erin started giggling, the continual removal of food from his
bag reminding her of the bottomless bag in Mary Poppins. "Holy
crap, is there no end to that bag? You brought us Thanksgiving
Dinner," she voiced, grinning. She reached across him and took
the now-empty bag, staring into it intently. "I'm looking for
the Russian circus... I think it's still in here!"
"I have soda and water, as well."
"Oooh! What kind of sodas?" She leaned back over towards him,
looking around to spot the cokes. In doing so, Erin got a good
whiff of the barbecue pork sandwiches. "Oh my god, those smell
so good....!"
"Hungry, ma chérie?"
Erin giggled, sitting back up, having snagged the container of
sandwiches and held them in her lap like a present. "What gave
it away?"
"Reese, this looks sooo perfect," she gushed, opening the
sandwich box and setting it on the table. "You even got a
pumpkin pie?" With a little squeal, she leaned over to give him
an excited hug. "You're so sweet!"

"Weeeeell.." he said slowly, pulling his bag out and beginning

cream, and milk. We have fruit.." he held up a container of
sliced apples, oranges, and grapes, along with other various

Erin started giggling as he removed more and more food from his
poor over-stuffed messenger bag. "Holy crap, is there no end to
that bag? You brought us Thanksgiving Dinner," she voiced,
grinning.
When she took the bag from him and started staring into it with
wide-eyed incredulity, he had to chuckle. "What are you doing?"
"I'm looking for the Russian circus... I think it's still in
here!"
Reese laughed hard at the movie reference. That was one of the
things that drew him to Erin - even a silly thing like film
references, she got them. She thought they were funny, too, and
joined him in on it. Still chuckling, he added,"I have soda and
water, as well."
"Oooh! What kind of sodas?" She leaned over him, and he felt a
grin break out across his face as she brushed against him,
intensely focused on the sandwiches as he slowly handed her one
of the cokes. "Oh my god, those smell so good....!"
"Hungry, ma chérie?"
Erin giggled, sitting back up, having snagged the container of
sandwiches and held them in her lap like a present. "What gave
it away?"
"Nothing, I'm just psychic, remember?" he teased, scooting so
that they were sitting up against each other comfortably, their
knees touching. He leaned into snuggle his cheek up against hers
when he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. He'd wanted to get
close for a long time now, and now he felt that it would be
okay. Even just to try out how it felt to have her so close to
him...
"Reese, this looks sooo perfect," she was so elated by a simple
little picnic, and he hadn't truly had to put that much effort
in, given his brother being so eager to cook until he fell over.
Daniel had been super happy when Reese told him he was going to
have a picnic with Erin, and had instantly insisted on making a
variety of treats, letting Reese choose from the available
options.
"You even got a pumpkin pie?" Erin squealed, catching him in a
hug that almost bowled him over, causing him to chuckle again.
She never did things halfway, did she? Erin liked to be
completely honest with how she felt. Reese never had to 'check'
if she was being sincere, or how she was feeling. Erin liked to
lay it all out for you, as easy as the pie that had warmed her
heart. "You're so sweet!"
"Nah, it's really nothing," he insisted, smiling. "Daniel adores
you like you're a goddess sent from above." Reese laughed,
leaning in until his forehead was pressed against her hair, the
dark brown locks tickling his cheek. After a moment of sitting
like that, breathing her in, he sat up and gave her a little
space, turning to their mini-feast. "Now, let's dig
in...'itei-duck-mouse', or whatever it is that Yukito says," he
laughed, messing up the word Yukito always muttered like a
mantra before they had lunch together. He would place his palms
together as though praying, his face solemn like he was
attending a funeral, and his voice deep and serious.
As soon as the words left his mouth, he regretted them, feeling
a pang of guilt and irritation. Yukito is the last thing we
should talk about. "It looks good though, doesn't it?" He bit
into his sandwich, instantly rolling his eyes in pleasure. Still
half-chewing his bite, he sent Erin a nod and reassured her,
"Oh, yeah. It turned out perfect.." While eating it eagerly, he
took his free hand and opened up the remaining containers,
arranging them on the table. After a moment, he looked up at
Erin as though just noticing something off about her face. He
leaned in toward her, furrowing his brow. "Ah, Erin..." he said,
his mouth twitching at the corner, one hand slipping gingerly
toward the container of whipped cream. "You've got something on
your face, right...right... there." He quickly rubbed his finger
down the edge of her cheek, spreading the whipped cream he had
acquired onto her. "Aww..no, it's still there. Bummer." And he
leaned forward and cleaned it off with a quick little kiss,
although it did more to spread the mess than to end it.

"Reese, this looks sooo perfect," Erin said, beaming. "You even
got a pumpkin pie?" She leapt over to hug him, happy he'd
thought of something people always forgot, or didn't think of in
the first place. It surprised her like nothing else that he
actually remembered and brought it. He was so thoughtful that
way. "You're so sweet!"
"Nah, it's really nothing," he insisted, smiling. "Daniel adores
you like you're a goddess sent from above." Reese laughed, and
Erin joined in with him. "What? Why in the world would he think
that?"
Reese leaned in until his forehead was pressed against her hair,
surprising Erin a bit, but not in a bad way. Just a surprising
way... She smiled. "Now, let's dig in...'itei-duck-mouse', or
whatever it is that Yukito says," he laughed, and Erin sat back
with a laugh, too.
"That's not what he says! It's something else.... not anything
about ducks and mice," she corrected in giggles. "It just sounds
a little like that. It's like a 'thank you for giving us food'
thing! He explained it to me once at lunch," she told him, tone
chipper.
"It looks good though, doesn't it?" He bit into his sandwich,
instantly rolling his eyes in pleasure. Still half-chewing his
bite, he sent Erin a nod and reassured her, "Oh, yeah. It turned
out perfect.."
Erin giggled, grabbing one of the sandwiches and diving into it
eagerly. He was right-- they were perfect, like a Fourth of July
barbecue. "Mmmmm!" The sandwich didn't last long, needless to
say.
Reese finished arranging all the food where he wanted it on the
table, then turned back to face her. His brow furrowed, as if he
was staring at something, and it felt like it must be on her
face, with how he was looking. Erin's eyes grew wide at the
thought of her face being covered in food unbeknownst to her.
"What is it?"
"Ah, Erin..." Reese started, making Erin think she definitely
must have had something on her face or in her teeth or
something. "You've got something on your face, right...right...
there." In one quick move, Reese streaked her face with whipped
cream, making Erin let out a loud gasp. "Reese!" She started
giggling. "What--"
"Aww..no, it's still there. Bummer." Reese leaned forward and
kissed the spot where he'd marked her with the whipped cream,
making Erin jump a little in surprise. Again. Reese was full of
surprises today.
She couldn't help but laugh. "It so was not a bummer... you did
that on purpose!" She wiped off the remains of the whipped cream
with her thumb and dolloped it onto his nose, giving him her
best smirk. "Payback!" Unable to stop grinning, Erin reached
around him and grabbed one of the bunches of grapes Reese had
brought. She took one off, ate it, then took another one, and
tossed it towards him, hoping it would stick, quickly followed
by a couple of more tries. "They're the grapes of wrath!" Erin
announced before falling into a fit of giggles.

"Now, let's dig in...'itei-duck-mouse', or whatever it is that
Yukito says," he laughed, and Erin sat back with a laugh, too.
He was having a hard time not being wounded at her lack of
reciprocation to his gestures, but was sure she would come
around eventually. He just had to keep trying.
"That's not what he says! It's something else.... not anything
about ducks and mice," she corrected in giggles. "It just sounds
a little like that. It's like a 'thank you for giving us food'
thing! He explained it to me once at lunch." He smiled, but he
didn't want to discuss Yukito right now. They continued nibbling
at their lunch, starting to dig into the sandwiches he had
brought and arranging the containers on the table in front of
them. It was nice to start having a conversation that didn't
include Yukito. As much as Reese valued him as a friend, he
didn't want Yukito and his big ball of feelings to come between
him and Erin enjoying each other.
"Ah, Erin..." Reese started, pretending he saw something on her
face. The look of panic in her expression was simply priceless.
"You've got something on your face, right...right... there." In
one quick move, Reese streaked her face with whipped cream,
making Erin let out a loud gasp.
"Reese!" She started giggling. "What--"
"Aww..no, it's still there. Bummer." Reese leaned forward and
kissed the spot where he'd marked her with the whipped cream,
surprising her. He could feel the shock to her system as their
lips met, but he wasn't sure what the shock meant. She laughed,
but he felt like she hadn't exactly responded in the way he had
hoped.
"It so was not a bummer... you did that on purpose!" She used
the whip cream that was left over on her face in order to smear
it on his face, and he sort of ensured that she would succeed,
his reaction a little delayed by choice. "Payback!" He smiled,
closing his eyes as she began to pelt grapes at his face.
"They're the grapes of wrath!" Erin announced before falling
into a fit of giggles. Reese started to laugh, starting deep in
his chest and the sound releasing with a rumble as he fell over
onto her, sprawling across her as he buried his nose into the
place beneath her ear, smearing the whip cream back onto her and
tickling her sides with his fingertips.
"What? Is something wrong, Erin!?" he asked in mock concern,
sitting up after a few moments, still laughing. His laughter
finally died away as he opened up his can of soda, taking a sip
from it as he sat with his shoulder brushing up against hers.
"So... what did you tell your parents you were doing today?" He
smiled. He liked Erin's parents, but he wasn't sure what they
thought of him at this point, or if they were cool with Erin
dating or not, or if she would even risk telling them about
their little get-together..

"Payback!" Erin shouted as she threw grapes back at his face.
They bounced off mostly, of course, and didn't really do
anything, but it struck her as hilarious. "They're the grapes of
wrath!" she called, collapsing into laughter.
Reese laughed too, loudly and richly, then surprising Erin as he
suddenly leaned forward on her. She let the grapes fall,
suddenly finding herself pinned between Reese and the concrete
bench where they sat. "Reese!" she squealed, still laughing. He
nuzzled her just by her ear, tickled her at her ribs, and made
her laughter turn into more squeals of false protest. "Reese!
This-- so-- isn't-- fair!" Playfully, she shoved at him.
"What? Is something wrong, Erin!?" he teased her, making her
give a harder shove in retort, her laughter still going strong.
He sat back up, still laughing himself, and Erin rushed to pick
the grapes back up. Plucking another one off, she took it and
put it against his cheek, squishing it with her index finger.
"No fair! You know I'm ticklish everywhere!"
Reese moved back to sit beside her, close enough that she felt
his warmth. He was a really warm person, not just in
personality. Like a little heater, Erin thought. "So... what did
you tell your parents you were doing today?"
"I told them I was spending the day with you!" she replied
brightly, bumping him a bit with her shoulder playfully. "Why,
what'd you think I'd say? That I was going to break into a
warehouse and offer a sacrifice to the dark lord in there?" She
giggled at her own joke, reaching across him for one of the
sodas. "What did you tell your mom, then?"

The sound of Erin's laugh was kind of a mix between that
stereotypical 'child laugh' and an adorable sort of snorting
sound that made Reese's cheeks hurt from smiling. In a world
where every vibration, every sound was amplified, hers thundered
beautifully in his ears. Reese nuzzled a little beneath her ear,
his fingers tickling at her and forcing her to give in with her
grape attack.
"Reese! This-- so-- isn't-- fair!" She shoved at him, and he
chuckled.
"What? Is something wrong, Erin!?" he teased her, making her
give a harder shove in retort, her laughter still going strong.
He sat back up, still laughing himself, and Erin rushed to pick
the grapes back up. He started to help her, when he felt the
coolness of a grape against his cheek, and a mini-explosion as
she crushed it with her finger. His mouth opened in surprised,
and he let out a sound that was caught between laughter and a
groan of protest. "Ew-w-w-w...Erin."
"No fair! You know I'm ticklish everywhere!"
They sat back up again, but this time he made sure they were
close enough to keep the contact without so much effort from
him. "So... what did you tell your parents you were doing
today?"
"I told them I was spending the day with you!" she replied
brightly, bumping him a bit with her shoulder playfully. He
wasn't sure how he felt about that. On one hand, she didn't say
date, like had hoped, but she hadn't hidden that she was with
him, either. "Why, what'd you think I'd say? That I was going to
break into a warehouse and offer a sacrifice to the dark lord in
there?" She giggled at her own joke, reaching across him for one
of the sodas. Reese just rolled his eyes. "What did you tell
your mom, then?"
"I said, 'Hey mom!' and she said, 'Wha-at? I'm busy!'" he
mimicked the voice of a hoarse older woman, "'I'm going out on a
date with Erin Spenser!' and she was like, 'What? Really? She's
so cute!' And I was like, 'Of course'. And my dad looked up from
his computer and gave me this nod like, 'Awww..yeaaah..'." It
wasn't the whole truth - they hadn't even been home enough
lately to tell them what was going on, and Reese hated to talk
to them over the phone or the computer. His Enhancement couldn't
clue him in to the little things of the conversation, and he
felt at a disadvantage trying to communicate. But he had told
his mother straight out about the date, and she had
whole-heartedly approved of Erin. And he wasn't about to tell
Erin about all the late-night talks he had had with his brother,
just talking about how excited he was for the date. That would
not have been cool at all. "And you know how Daniel reacted.
Haha..."
